this place is phenomenal. funny enough i went to uc berkeley and i had no idea that such an incredible mexican restaurant was in berkeley. at this place my sister and i went. she got the chilaquiles and i got the chicken enchiladas. both dishes were phenomenal. the chilaquiles were crispy and flavorful and they really hit the spot for delicious brunch. the enchiladas were crispy with plenty of salsa. the salsa's tart and it's salty but it's not too tart or salty. it's very well balanced. i also enjoyed this additional salsa that they had available. it's like a red salsa and inside it's a gorgeous restaurant. there's also just a bunch of pastries that you can get if you want. my sister and i opted for coffee to enjoy with our brunch and the food is not necessarily cheap. however i think for the experience of sitting in such a beautiful cafe and having really delicious food, it is worth going out once in a while to la mission. service was awesome, staff was really friendly. the ambience was really really gorgeous for brunch. lots of families sitting around and enjoying delicious mexican food under the berkeley sun. read more

I had high hopes for La Mission based on the amazing reviews... The location is cute with a nice shaded outdoor area. The servers are personable. My party ordered the verde enchiladas, vegetarian burrito, platanos, and flan. Enchiladas - filled with chicken and the sauce was spicy. However, it wasn't very flavorful, just hot. The rice and beans were very disappointing. Bland and the cheese on the beans was cold, stiff, and clumped. Vegetarian burrito - Delicious! No complaints. Platanos - Served over refried beans with a super unappetizing sauce splashed on top. The taste was just okay but I've had better. Flan - definitely a different texture than the average flan. Overall, it wasn't something to drive home about but it was cool. Overall, the lunch wasn't bad but it wasn't great nor was ti worth almost $80. I've know of La Mission for years. I had been a few times and remember when it used to be a Taco Bell (look at the building closely and you'll recognize the telltale signs). But only in recent months has it become my absolute favorite place for Mexican food in Berkeley. With an extensive menu, fresh flavors, super friendly staff, a great energy, and plenty of outdoor seating, it's a vibe. My go-to Mexican spot in Berkeley. Wonderful patio outside (and free parking behind the building), house-made salsa, $13 burritos, and some of the best carnitas I've ever had. Order at counter - seating options are mainly outside on the patio with just a few tables inside. Chips aren't included in the order unfortunately, but worth it to spend a few bucks on chips and salsa! The burritos here are hefty, try them with the carnitas. Not too oily, crisp edges and tender in the middle... the dream. Their fried fish tacos are FRESHLY fried which is a world of difference - hefty portion. I tend to get their grande tacos, they're a meal in itself. A good way to try their different meats too! Their menudo is something special, worth the price with an ample helping of tripe and fresh veg. Can't go wrong here. Went to La Mission last weekend off a recommendation from a friend. We came on a Saturday afternoon, and it was nice out so we were able to snag a seat in their outdoor patio. It was our first time so naturally I had to go with a steak super burrito and a couple of fish tacos. the steak super with all the fixings came out to $20 and the two fish tacos came out to $14.50 before tax and tip. I was a little taken aback by the price of the tacos, until I saw them. They came with a huge piece of fried fish on each of them, topped with the fixings. We went with the staff recommendation with mayo and a flour tortilla. Easily one of the best fried fish tacos I've had in the bay. The burrito was just alright though. Didn't really find much of a stand out flavor and wish I would've asked for it grilled. Solid burrito if that's what you're craving but next time around I'm sticking with the fish tacos. read more

I can't say anything about the service since you order at a counter and bring a number back to your table, and bus your own dishes. There is plenty of outdoor seating so it is great to sit outside on a nice sunny day. I ordered the Baja fish tacos and unfortunately the batter was not fully cooked. Not to mention the fish had way too much breading, making it not taste very great (look at the photo). I basically picked apart most of the breading and ate the fish inside. I love this place! I was expecting to just get beans and rice (my standard vegan special that I piece together) but La Mission has tons of vegetarian and vegan options! My brother (vegetarian) ordered the tacos patatas and I had the kids burrito (beans, rice, guac, salsa). We also ordered the chips, salsa & guac. Everything was jam packed with flavor, freshly made, and the service was awesome. The guy working the register was really knowldgeable on the menu and was eager to share all the veg options they had. I'm not used to that kind of attention for eating veg, especially at a Mexican restaurant so that was pleasantly appreciated! Looking around, I could see there was a good mix of veg and meat eaters. It's important to note they offer quite a bit of dishes with mole which isn't a super common thing. I love the outdoor seating with heaters. Hidden gem! I usually stick to the taco trucks in Oakland but was in the area and stopped by for a burrito. The menu is extensive and I was pleasantly surprised to find they have fried potato tacos, enchiladas, sopes, nopales, posole, so many of my favorite Mexican staples. We ended up getting a chicharron burrito, tacos de papa, chorizo and papa sope and the platanos. Everything was soo good, and the red sauce was delicious and perfectly spicy for me. I've been to this place before and the food was pretty good, but I didn't take any pics the last time so I had to come back. We ordered the steak tacos and the chicken mole enchilada. We sat down and waited for our food to come and it didn't take too much longer before we received our food. The tacos had some good flavor and was cooked perfect. Ordered some takeout from this place and wasn't disappointed! The portion sizes were surprisingly big and the food was very filling. It's usually pretty hard finding food in Berkeley that is filling for $15-20 but the food pricing here is reasonably tame. I loved the variety of food on the menu as well, it was my first time trying out the mole burritos and i really liked them! The food tastes good and isn't too salty or too sweet just perfect :) The food was done very quickly in about 10-15 minutes and everything was packaged nicely for takeout :) I really loved this place and would love to order from here again in the future :)! THE BEST MEXICAN in Berkeley!!! My home away from home. Super friendly vibe and amazing food. The plátanos tropicales are served with this super duper yummy white sauce. For lunch, I usually get a veggie burrito with extra pico, guacamole, and sour cream. It's $17 and change, but I get two meals out of it (unless my husband gets to the leftovers before me). Plus they have this lovely outdoor patio with tables both in the shade and sun and complimentary green and red salsa. Best of all - they allow dogs!! There is some indoor seating and then there is a cute patio outside with some tables. Veggie burrito (3.5/5): Hefty burrito! I added the mix-ins (sour cream, guacamole, cheese), each for an additional charge, but I wish they came with the veggie burrito by default. The fillings weren't layered evenly - half of the burrito had all the refried beans and rice, and the other half had everything else. But good flavors overall! Their seating is all outdoor, so weather permitting, with kids in hand, it's a great option. Food isn't cheap taqueria prices, but it's quality and if your situation is anything like mine, it's not fast food hamburgers, and therefore take the W. Recently my husband and I shared the steak enchiladas and the chicken fajitas and it was a ton of food and so good - the accompanying rice and beans were delicious and I found the quality of the protein to be there. My kids ate up the kids burrito and flautas and everyone was happy. The guac (at least on top of the enchiladas) was still a little flavorless and not super thick and creamy, but everything else was really good. Any time I am near Berkeley I make it a point to visit La Mission. Good Mexican food is a must for any visit to California, and La Mission delivers. This time we ordered three tacos (Baja fish, chicken, steak) and the lamb barbacoa platter. I also ordered a horchata, a sangria, and flan. I'll start by saying the flan is the best flan I have ever had. The lamb barbacoa as also phenomenal. The tacos were each HUGE and were were incredibly satisfying. The ambiance of La Mission is lovely. There is a pretty outdoor patio, or if it is cold, there is plenty of indoor seating as well. I love the casual Mexican vibes of the interior. I found a hidden gem for me at least. I wanted to go to La Taqueria in SF for its famous mission style carne asada burrito no rice, huge. Traffic was a mess and it was a rare March heatwave so I decided to try something I saw while driving by downtown college area Berkeley. I saw place called La Mission. It looked very simple yet hidden because OPEN sign wasn't in or not working. Driving by side you can't tell there is an ample car parking lot which was all empty and there were no signs that prohibited parking. It was early for lunch around 11 am so happy they did have a breakfast menu until 2 pm but I wanted a burrito with a level of good spicy ness and orders mar and Tierra surf and turf without any additions like sour cream or salsa. The ingredients were very high quality. The steak wasn't chewy and the shrimp were cooked with best seasoning resulting in an amazing burst of flavor this is real Mexican food. Most of the patrons eat outside with lots of shaded tables. Service is wonderful and this is a family run spot. They have complimentary Lemon water too. I'm gonna keep it real this was one of the best tasting burritos I've ever had in a while . 5/5 I'll def be back. read more
