We've been here a few times. Based on the quality of the food, the ambiance and general good energy, Las Esperanzas has become one of our favorite restaurants. The prices are also remarkably low--it's no more expensive to eat here than it is to eat at McDonalds. Superb, authentic Central American food. Everything fresh, portions are huge. Platos typicos, platos especiales del chef, and platos culturales all have a lot of variety of items that come on the plate. Beef AND chicken; ribs, fish AND chorizo, all with rice, beans, salad. The atmosphere is warm and welcoming. The vast majority of patrons are speaking Spanish. Lots of families. Friendly wait staff. The dining area is super clean with plenty of space between tables. There's a high ceiling--so regardless of whether others in the restaurant are talking and laughing, the sound levels are not overwhelming. The restaurant is popular and can be crowded during prime meal times. But arrive earlier or later than prime time and there will be plenty of tables free. Service wait times are fairly expeditious. All in all, this type of restaurant, with delicious authentic food, a welcoming ambiance and low prices isn't common in Baltimore. Overall? Highly recommended. read more

Called in my order came in 35 minutes later and my order wasn't ready.. the young lady handed me my order and i asked her if she was sure everything was in my bag? She looked around and saw something was missing and took it back to the kitchen shouldve been my first red flag whatever she hands me my order and i go. I get home and realize not 1 but 2 of my items were missing. I call them to let them know all they say is " oh are you sure its not missing "? ma'am i wouldn't be calling back if i wasn't sure. I came to this restaurant cause a friend recommended it. I usually don't come to this area, but I was running errands and decided to give a try. My first impression of this restaurant is that is very clean and organized. All the tables are spotless. I noticed they are constantly cleaning the floor. I never seen a restaurant this clean. They have a large menu that includes favorite food from Guatemala, Honduras and El Salvador. I decided to try pupusas with cheese and loroco. They were delicious. For the table we shared hen soup, seafood soup, salad and rice. The food is very tasty. Keep in mind the food tastes a while because is made to order. This El Salvadorean place is a gem that needs to be shared. The host and crew were very attentive the whole night, making sure we had what we needed. We were always asking for something extra (like red sauce, salsa verde, more cabbage...) and each time they responded promptly with a smile. We had a couple appetizers, various pupusas and tamales. The pupusas, cabbage salad, and and red sauce were spot on. The tamales did not have the traditional masa consistency I'm used to, but was still tasty, filled with veggies, meat(chicken), potatoes, and cheese. We had the carne asada tacos, done traditionally with cilantro and onion, not the "taco bell" way; it was very tasty meat, and fresh. I had a traditional dish, churassco salvadoreno; this comes with grilled flat steak, dirty rice, grilled chile, lettuce, tomato and guacamole. This dish was done right, with traditional flavors, good char, and great rice/beans. Guacamole was delicious and fresh, without too much citrus. Definitely a must try for any body who likes El Salvadorean food. Their salsa verde, in my opinion, was the best salsa they had. As far as it being cold.... it wasn't cold, and it looks like the staff implemented an entry heater. We experienced quick and attentive service, and it was a Saturday night. This place is a hidden Gem, I've passed it by a couple time and wondered how it was. Let me tell you from the time you step foot into this place the aesthetic's are amazing! From the multiple chandeliers to the golden crown molding down to the cleanliness of the restrooms! My family and I have been going to this place several years now. I am not sure if management changed or ehat is the deal. But the customer service we received recently was horrible. They have items on the menu that are "not available". The server towards the end of our meal totally unattended us he disappeared. We had to ask other servers for our check and some drinks that we had previously ordered. To top it off they add gratuity to the check. With the service we received $25 of gratuity was not in order. Horrible service. I used to love this place. Sad to see how its going down. read more

UPDATE! I've been coming here as a regular at least once a week now since they opened, and I continue to love and enjoy their food. The staff is very friendly and accommodating, the restaurant is well managed, and there are always plenty of customers I notice coming back for more. One dish I've grown to love is the sopa de gallina, it's so much better than any chicken soup I've ever had. I also recently discovered their dulce de leche cake, and it's ridiculously good. We ordered a slice to "share" and ended up immediately ordering another. I really think this place is great and plan to revisit them on an ongoing basis, to infinity and beyond! :-D read more

Tried the new restaurant on one of the coldest nights ever, only to find out they don't have heat, or keep it low. No one took their coats off. The servers are very nice, and give you time to eat and socialize. The dining area is clean, and the waitresses are on top of cleaning. There is no alcohol. You are given chips with salsa and yellow queso "cheese" that is the same kind you get at sports stadiums or movie theaters. Started with a beef patty. The pastry shell was crispy and not doughy. The filling was small pieces of steak with potatoes. It would have been one of the best beef patties I'd had, but it was waaaaay too salty. The texture was very pleasing. Got a shrimp & cheese as well as a steak & cheese papusa. Steak and cheese was flavorful and yummy! Shrimp and cheese really didn't have any shrimp. It was more like tiny, tiny bits mixed in. I got the house platter - chicken, steak, shrimp skewer, rice, "beans" and salad. Chicken was a large breast, sliced thin. It was marinated in something that made it very salty. Beef was flank, and marinated. It wasn't as salty and was tasty. Shrimps were flavorful with some kind of marinade or sauce brushed over them. Refried beans were puréed, so it was more like a gravy. Rice came with small cubed veggies in it and was good. Husband had a marinated flank steak covered in sautéed onions. It was good, but we asked for salsa verde for more flavor. All in all, it was a reasonably priced meal that wasn't terrible. Both my husband and I thought some of the food was extremely salty, and that was disappointing. For this reason, of all the Mexican/ Salvadorian restaurants in the area, this isn't one I will make a point of going back to. If you are interested in trying new places, go ahead.
