Each time I turn into the shopping center from Kempsville Road I directly face the beloved spot that no longer exists. The shopping center is located on the northwest corner of Kempsville & Providence Roads. It provides convenient one stop shopping for residents in the area. It's easy to stop for a car wash at Green Clean Express when I'm returning from a doctor appointment in Chesapeake. The L shaped center is anchored by a Food Lion facing the Providence Road entrance. In addition to the previously mentioned businesses the shopping center houses numerous popular fast food restaurants, Music & Arts, Ivy Rehab Center, a pharmacy, cell phone store, hair & nail salons and much more. It truly is one stop shopping. The facade has been upgraded over the years. It's clean and has plentiful parking. Entrance & exit on busy Kempsville Road can be difficult during peak traffic. It's easier at those times to take advantage of the traffic light at Providence Road, even if your stop is on a Kempsville Road out parcel, such as Green Clean Express. The shopping center will always be a stop for me, even though Frankie's Ribs is now only a part of my memories.

You should check out the thrift store when you get a chance or TJ Maxx. If you need a drug store, they've got one of those too. There are a ton of empty storefronts and the empty spaces look old/bad. But I can tell that the center is making some visual updates to the main strip.

There are a number of anchor stores including Barnes & Noble, Best Buy, Harris Teeters, Marshall's, Office Max, Old Navy, PetSmart, Target, & Total Wine. Just about any type of business one would need can be found there. You'll find numerous banks, a major drug store, hobby store, beauty supplies, a chiropractor, eye doctor, denture & implant office, gaming store, furniture store, greeting card store, surf shop, clothing stores & many eateries. The center, located in the Greenbrier section of Chesapeake, is not close to me. But I frequent it relatively often because some of my doctors have offices in the nearby Sentara Careplex. After a doctor's appointment I can't resist a visit to Everbowl, my favorite Açaí Bowl shop. There is also the option of picking up a takeout dinner at Raising Cane's Chicken Fingers. Both favorites are located among the businesses located on out parcels of the market center. The shopping area is clean & well laid out with plentiful parking and a modern facade. For those who live in Chesapeake this is a large and convenient place to shop. For those of us who live quite a distance, it's a regular stop if one of my favorites is there. It's a fun and delicious finale to a doctor's appointment.

Kemps River Shopping Center is a large center occupying the northwest corner of the intersection of…read moreKempsville & Indian River Roads. The shopping spot has popular shopping, businesses and eateries. There are 70 locally owned or national chain businesses of every type. Food options include anything from fast food, international foods, fine dining and even a European style pub. Want to watch a movie? You'll find the Cinema Cafe. This popular area is in the crosshairs of the city for redevelopment. City Council has approved plans to demolish half of the retail spaces and build 4 multi family apartment structures, a clubhouse and pool. Less than half the square footage would be retained for retail space, I can't imagine the effect that adding 322 new apartments will have on this already extremely busy intersection. Area schools will also become more crowded. Are there plans to deal with this problem in the heart of busy Kempsville? Where will the forced out small businesses go that could have the same foot traffic as Kemps River Crossing? Let's keep Kemps River Crossing as a shopping center rather than a change to a multi purpose residential commercial development.

The strip center is one that appears to be on the decline. It's anchored by a Food Lion, Roses Department Store and a large empty space between the two. Theres a neighborhood mix of stores which include auto parts, fast food, ramen, pizza, comfort & soul food, wireless, goodwill and a tax service. An out parcel space holds a Long John Silver's fast food restaurant. Another appears to have been torn down. Footprints of a building remain. A Wells Fargo Bank occupies the remaining out parcel. Parking is plentiful with handicapped parking spaces near the store where I shopped. The location is on S Military Highway just south of the Providence Road intersection. I'll stop again if I'm in the area again and need to pick up a few grocery items.

Great Neck Square has been a shopping source for the Great Neck area of Virginia Beach for a long…read moretime. The shopping center is on the northeast corner of the intersection of First Colonial & Great Neck Roads. In addition to the neighborhood, Great Neck Square is convenient for those coming north from the First Colonial medical corridor. It's directly adjacent to a sister shopping center Great Neck Village on the north. You can drive from one to the next without exiting to Great Neck Road. Harris Teeter supermarket anchors the center now. It' store occupies the space of the longtime Farm Fresh, whose chain went out of business. The shopping center contains a large variety of businesses that make for neighborhood convenience. You'll find a hair salon, dental office, orthodontic center, nail salon, book store, physical therapy center, credit union, business offices and more, including Ynot Italian restaurant & Plaza Azteca eateries. Longtime out parcel Hardee's sits facing First Colonial. Adjacent is a convenient new 7-Eleven. Out parcels of Great Neck Square & Great Neck Village have contained different restaurants or fast food over the years. I remember well quick trips through their fast food choices in the late 90's to pick up lunch for my son who was at Cox High School. Great Neck Square has received facelifts that have kept the longtime shopping center a feature of the current times. It isn't often that I currently do business in the shopping center that I pass so often. Hardee's is a convenient but high calorie breakfast stop if I've had to fast before testing or a procedure at Sentara Virginia Beach General Hospital. 7-Eleven has been a welcomed fuel stop. Sometimes a quick stop at Harris Teeter fills a grocery need. For those who live in the neighborhood, Great Neck Square is a benefit. It's not a spot where I'll shop often.

Signage is on Great Neck. The lot is very large to accommodate a major grocer. Other than that it's a strip with small stores I've never shopped. A few out businesses are Hardee's and Dunkin Donuts. A new 7 Eleven is on the corner. On my last visit there was minor debris. The leasing agent is Breeden. I think they are one of the areas best.

You can find restaurants here, jewelry, home goods, foods, plants, electric bikes, furniture, gifts, Hallmark... it's home to some great locally owned shops that I frequent pretty often as well as an ice cream shop, Starbucks, and Ethan Allen and Fresh Market. It's an absolutely huge shopping center that has multiple entrances and exits so you can easily get in an out. Note: I do recommend you only enter and exit with traffic lights as the access roads for Laskin are notoriously confusing and frustrating to deal with. I'll be glad when they're gone... perhaps in the next 15-20 years? Ha. Still, worth the visit.

Best entry point is Laskin where their are two entrances. The furthest East is less congested. I've always found plenty of parking and the lot is impeccably clean. Lighting is great at night. Access to the businesses is great from the surface lot. So some of my favorite businesses located in Hilltop East are The Butcher's Son (previously Fire & Vine), Bottlecraft, Taste, YMCA, Great Outdoor Provision Co. and Birkenstock store. There are many more to check out. The Hilltop area is an upper-scale strip that is in a beautiful area of Virgina Beach only three miles from the oceanfront. I will continue to shop and eat at establishments in the area and recommend.

Independent Plaza is a shopping strip likely dating to roughly mid to late 70's. The location is on…read morethe corner of Haygood & Independence. The cool factor is the barrel tile roof. I've had a few businesses that I frequented over the years in plaza. Years ago I was a regular at Subway that's still there. Also a dance studio that may still be there. Most recently a very regular at Colattao Coffee. Parking is typically adequate, but at times challenging with coffee lovers on the weekend. Most visits I find the lot to be overall clean. A 3 stars seems fitting for this dated shopping strip.
