I had a horrible experience with the staff in this store. On April 14th I came here looking for a bathing suit. For me, that is always a tough experience, trying on clothes in general, especially a bathing suit. To give you the reality, I am 5'2", curvy petite and short waisted, size small.
I was eyeing a certain bathing suit that said "one size fits all" and thought oh wow, I won't have to try this on? Great! Plus, it was a neat material. A young woman who worked there started talking to me about that brand, and how it works great on everyone. Another young woman, a blonde who worked there too, joined her colleague and concurred. I dared to be open and confide in them. I said, "Well that would be great, because it is hard for me to find a bathing suit that works on me. I am petite curvy, and have a short waist, and I kind of wanted to just buy a suit without trying it on today." The blonde looks at me and decides to correct me about my own assessment. She says to me, "Petite boxy."
Let's be clear. Calling a woman "boxy" is pejorative, and there is absolutely no world in which that is ok.
I was stunned. She then walked away like a sociopath.
I slowly put the bathing suit back. Her colleague, the normal one, just stared at me. I said to her, "She just called me "boxy". That's a really fucked up thing to say to someone."
She said, "Oh no ma'am, she was talking about herself!"
She was not. It was very clear. Nice try, but in what way would she be talking about herself in this scenario? Mind you, the girl who insulted me was a thin, tall, blue eyed blonde. And there is no world in which she was calling HERSELF boxy in that back and forth.
This happened a day before my birthday in a vacation destination place that is very special to me and my family. So here's a new great memory to keep in the noggin.
Stunned by this interaction, I walked out of the store, and almost began to cry. Then I felt rage. I did not go back in, and I will never go back into that store.
NEVER EVER comment on someone else's body, especially when they are in the vulnerable position of buying a bathing suit. You don't know what the person has gone through, and what kind of negative effect your words can have on that person for a long time to come.
I hope that girl finds a different line of work, away from human beings and animals.
After cooling down a bit and fighting off tears. I went into Vinyard Vines and took a chance on a size small one piece. Tried it on at home and it looks fucking great on me.
