I had my LASIK at LaserCare eye center in April 2016, I was so happy with my entire experience. The staff and dr Gicheru were fantastic, professional, and knowledgable. Staff and everybody was nice. I was given the option of getting the SMILE procedure where both eyes would be equal even though I might require "readers" sooner or later or have the procedure of getting one eye set for far away and the other for near. I opted for SMILE because I didn't care if I needed readers eventually or even from day 1. For 49 years I've never been able to see far away, That's literally all I wanted. Combine that with the fact I'm left handed/dominate, I knew doing 1 eye far/1 close was simply not going to work. If that was my only option, I would have stayed with glasses/contacts. When I went through the exam and they dialed in what my eyes should be after the procedure, I could have cried. Not only could I see/read the bottom line of the chart, I could make out the lines around the letters. Both eyes. The best I've ever seen in my life. To be honest, they could have doubled the price and I would have figured out a way to pay for it. Now the bad. Every post-op exam they would ask what procedure was I having. I would say the SMILE procedure, which would illicit a pause until I would add, both eyes the same. I should have questioned things then but I did not. They are professionals and if their chart is different, they would ask or talk to the doctor, things would be clarified? Right? I guess not. Day of procedure, they put the drops in my eyes so I couldn't see and the person leading me to the op room asked what procedure I was having. I said SMILE, there was yet another pause (couldn't see it but could hear it) so I added, both eyes the same. Something was written on a tag and stuck to my shirt (ask for that BEFORE the drops so you know for sure they write the correct procedure). Because I didn't speak up, I take partial responsibility, hence 2 stars and not 1. The actual procedure was smooth, relaxing and I didn't feel a thing. Aside from my vision, the only drawback on the whole procedure was my massive dry eyes (not their fault at all as they said it could happen) and gall of the makers of xiidra for selling the most expensive liquid in the world ($700 for 30 small vials). That stuff burned my eyes like I was swimming in a massively chlorine dosed pool. I only used it for a few days before I went back to the regular drops. $700 wasted but nothing to do with the 2 stars. Every post-op exam, I would explain my left eye is seriously lagging and is it possible they didn't perform the SMILE procedure? It was always brushed off as "it's still healing and might catch up". At this point, my left eye (the one they made see close) feels heavy because it's fighting to be the dominate eye, my right/far vision eye isn't as clear as the pre-op exam. During my last exam, I explained the most unsettling part is when driving at night, I can't read street signs until I'm right up on the sign. I told them I really needed a glasses prescription because I can't live this way. They never admitted I didn't receive the SMILE procedure and was happy to give me a glasses prescription. Ultimately I was told because my left eye "didn't heal as they would liked", I was eligible to have that eye corrected for the discounted price of $999. In my mind, I was thinking, an extra grand to get the procedure I thought I was getting from the start? Why not just do what everyone agreed upon and raise the price a grand? Before the DR left the room, I knew I would be going elsewhere eventually and was starting to work out how long it would take me to pay for another procedure (I'm not rich and my eye insurances pays $0.00. My heath insurance did pay all but $60 of the most expensive liquid in the world, so that was nice). The reason why I decided to write a review, is the glasses prescription. I use that to buy glasses at 2 different online stores. One regular pair and 1 sunglasses. Both are off. Mind you, I've worn glasses/contacts my whole life and have ordered both off the internet since that was a thing. Glasses prescriptions are easy to enter. My vision in both is pretty good as long as I'm looking directly out of the middle of the lens or upward. Looking down/down left/right and not so great. If both glasses came from the same company, maybe their fault. Coming from 2 different companies and well... That is what has prompted this long review. I have since known a two people who had lasik after me, both asked about my experience and if I would recommend where I went. I told them the procedure is no big deal. As far as where to have it done, I don't know, let me know. I'll be going to one of their DR's to get my left eye fixed. Sad I'll miss that massive "discount" rate of an extra $999 but oh well. read more

I had an appointment with Dr. Sidney Gicheru. He did not show up. They did not inform me. They collected insurance upfront. Waited for over 2 hours in a room. Another doctor showed up. There was no apology. They gave me a price tag of about $9000 for cataract for both the eyes. I consulted more talented ophthalmologist and got it done at half the price. Update! Got smile procedure done today and it went so well. I can't express enough how much I enjoyed being treated at Laser Care Eye Center. Even in the procedure room they are talking you through it, and have a staff member there dedicated to walking you through it and encouraging/supporting the patient. Had cataracts removed. Was told two options for lenses. One would correct distance vision but require reading glasses. The other would mean no reading glasses needed either but cost 4 times as much. I mentioned bad astigmatism in one eye had kept other doctors from doing LASIK on me. More than one had said it was too bad to correct. Doctor here said he could definitely correct it with the high priced lenses so I opted for the higher priced option based on what he told me. Didn't correct the astigmatism. So a second surgery, that cost me another fee, still didn't work. So now I wear glasses. Not just to read. Most all of the time to correct the astigmatism. A lot of money for the end result. But my distance vision is great now. I should've gone with my gut feeling and chosen the other option. read more

BEWARE! This guy is the worst. My husband and I came to this office because he had taken over Dr Boothe's practice. Both of us had a surgery of a Lasik and a PRK. They bullied us to sign some documents to say we would take pictures. He played loud techno music during the surgery and made us both take a picture together as husband and wife with a thumbs up, not knowing the results. The doctor will have nothing to do with you until the very last minute before the surgery, and if you ask any questions he will act annoyed and tell you that "it's to correct your vision," and no other responses. We came to three months of aftercare, and they continued to tell us that we had dry eye, and that was why our vision was not good. We both are now wearing contacts. We had to go to another physician, both of our vision has been permanently messed up, and they only offered to redo the surgery for $900 as a way to fix the problem. I am just telling some of the whole story. I just hope to save someone from the horror and exorbitant costs we have been through!!! read more

This is an addendum. Perhaps there is an understaffing issue but I must note it because it is so vastly different from my other experiences at this practice. At the conclusion of my appointment I requested an itemized recipe because I didn't receive one and was told the back office will work on it and get it to me in a few days. It's been over a week and I haven't heard back. I called the office and was transferred to the back office manager. She was brusque and hurried me off the line. I had a terrible experience at Laser Care Eye Center today with Dr.Gicheru. Apparently, he has horrible bed side manners and really no sympathy or care for his patients. That's how he made me feel. I will never go back to this doctor and I will make sure my husband doesn't either. I'm always fair and honest with all my reviews and am advising you to go elsewhere. I had a terrible experience trying to book the first appointment which took me three tries!!! And if you're trying to call one location, you'll get connected with a different office. They couldn't find my first appointment in the system so they squeezed me in. On my second appointment- they completely missed sending me the reminder or appointment email so I didn't make it. Then at my rescheduled appointment I WAITED ONE HOUR to see the doctor. Waste of my time. Why do they think that their time is more valuable than their patients? And, it looked like DR. gicheru wasn't even planning to rsee me because a doctor shadowing him received me in the room; when I asked for him, both, his assistant and the other doctor looked puzzled and then his assistant went to call him in so had we waited without her calling him In, he likely wouldn't have seen me. He's short and curt ; He may have been bothered because I changed my followup to be with him and not a young associate of his. It's my insurance and I'm free to spend with whomever I please. Initial consultation with his associate - sweet and caring. Yes, she's quite nice. She seems to be a young doctor. I'm thinking she's more than capable but still a young doctor so inexperienced. I would have appreciated she recommend a few things I learned by reading about this condition online and also coming by useful research conducted by Harvard. What a disappointment this was. I was so ready to get my procedure set up and be done with glasses. After speaking with Dr. Gicheru, I decided that getting mono vision was best for me. When the day of the surgery came, I was nervous - as to be expected. The doctor seems to have very little patience and lacks the ability to reassure and make one comfortable. He basically seemed like he was in a hurry. During the procedure, I guess my eye moved a bit and he sternly told me "don't move. I almost lost suction". He sounded like he was scolding me. Anyhow, after surgery, the follow up appointments were not with him. In fact, I never saw him after that day. And over the weeks, my vision declined. I raised my concern and was told my eyes were healing and the prescription would adjust over time. I eventually went back to my regular eye doctor because I was in need of magnifying glasses. He was shocked to see the results of my exam this time from times past. Apparently they were worse than before the procedure. I am now more farsided than before - and back in glasses . I was supposed to have one more follow up appointment with LaserCare but told them there was no point due to what all was going on. I never got a call from the office manager or doctor to ask me any questions. It's just like they got their money, didn't work out, too bad for me. So based on my experience, I would have to say I wish I had gone somewhere else. Very disappointed. read more

Having turned 65 and been told I have a cataract in my right eye I called and made an appointment with LaserCare Eye out of their Plano office. The eye check cost me $212.62. Then I was told I need to go to their Irving office. Another appointment, another eye exam, and another $313.84, this after waiting from 10:00am. to 1:30p.m. I was told they wanted to start with my left eye, even though that was good eye. Everything sounded wrong to me. When I called them a few days later to tell them that I would feel better I f they started with my right eye, I was told that they didn't accept my insurance so no surgery. I called my insurance. I was concerned that not only was I defrauded out of $528.46, but that Medicare might have also been defrauded by Laser Care Eye Center. All this happened in October, 2018. Laser Care contends that I didn't tell them my insurance. However, I did not make the appointment with them on the phone until after they told me that they accepted my current insurance. I would not have gone to them otherwise. The final result was that in April 2019 they sent me a check for $131.46. I did eventually get my cataract surgery at UT Southwestern by Dr. Verity - it went excellently. I am doing the left eye next week and feel exttemely comfortable with Dr. Verity and the UT Southwestern staff. I will discourage anyone from going to LaserCare Eye Center. I never felt comfortable with the Dr. Gicheru (imagine, I had a full cataract in my right eye and he wanted to do my left). Furthermore, I am angry with their office manager who had the audacity to accuse me of trying to defraud them. Stop - if you are thinking about going there. read more

I cannot be more grateful and happy to have chosen Dr. Gicheru to do my surgery. The staff is fantastic and they make you feel so comfortable and less stressed. Vanessa is the sweetest and coolest and explained everything in detail as well as Dr. Gicheru that was going to happen. The atmosphere is great and exceptional and I recommend anyone that is ready to get rid of their migraines and red/dry eyes due to glasses and contacts like myself to go here. I would recommend Dr Gicheru to people that don't have job and can sit in his office for hours to see him, and the funny thing is you will not see him and one of his associate (other doctor) will see you because he had an emergency etc.... even though I called their office and asked if he is in that day and no emergency and they lied and said no problem at all and when I sat there for 80 minute I did not see him and another doctor check up my eyes. So as I mentioned at the beginning if you don't have anything to do you can go to his office. read more

Dr. Gichuru is fine, but his office manager is beyond awful. Dishonest and extremely unprofessional. I was told that I must set up and use the portal for their office - that having a portal is required of all patients, and that it's not their fault, because the government requires it. Of course this isn't true - I have seen several doctors in the past year - all of whom politely request that you set up a portal. No one else requires it. When I told the office manager this isn't standard practice at other doctor's offices, and I didn't want to set up another portal (there are way too many portals in my life already, to add a doc I see only once per year) he became very combative and extremely rude, Over the years, I've put up with mistakes and problems with the office staff because it's convenient and I liked the doctor. A few years ago, they even sent me flowers to apologize for their poor treatment. But this was the last straw. After about10 years as a patient in this practice, I've now switched to Dr. Bhatia, who is wonderful - great staff and wonderful care. read more

My review is only on Tami Nguyen, Optician in the Optical Shop located inside LaserCare Eye Center. I would definately recommend her, as she has proven to be a true professional. She worked with me until I was satisfied, and made a believer out of me that custom reading glasses are far better than any store bought pair. DR. Gitchrue is fine, but must concur with the another review on his office staff specifically The lady whom works the front desk and and his office manager, they are very rude and disrespectful. As they lied to Dr Gitcherue, and said I am very loud and disrespectful, and cursed. You can ask the technician David who helped me all the time, I am always pleasant when calling and going to my appointments. My experience at LaserCare Eye Center was nothing short of fantastic. I have never been to an ophthalmologists office that was so efficient! I was called back at my appointment time and my entire visit lasted about an hour. Dr. Gicheru and his staff were very informative and compassionate. Don't be fooled . This guy is to smart for his own good. He recommended complete eye removal due to an old eye injury when I was ten. Got a second opinion and found all i needed was some drops to reduce the inflammation in my eye. This guy came off as a real know-it-all dumb ass. During my eye examination a he kept talking like a first year med student that's learned some new words. Really a shame when they off this way. Thank god I got a second opinion. The whole staff at this place up to and including the doctor are really wound up to tight and you get the impression they are not there to put the patient first. No matter what Sidney Gicheru recommends for treatment...you owe it to yourself TO GET A SECOND OPINION! I went down the street to Dr. Shashi Dharma in Irving TX and within 10 min she diagnosed my issue and simply said " I'm going to recommend some drops to reduce the pressure and inflammation". WOW! Down home and personal service with a smile...no over the top words or jargon that only a med student would understand. Love Dr Sharma and will never change :) read more
