I'm 30 years old, married with 6 month old kid, and most of my friends fall generally into that same category. We (15 of us) recently decided to celebrate a friend's birthday at Stone Mountain and we had a great time. We visited the park on a beautiful Saturday afternoon and getting into the park, parking, and getting out of the park later on that night were all a breeze. I expected long lines and hoards of people, but I was pleasantly surprised to find that neither of those existed. The lasershow was a lot of fun. My 6 month old daughter never took her eyes off the mountain even though it was 2 hours past her bedtime and she was extremely tired. The show started promptly at 9:30 and lasted for about 45 minutes. It was a good mix of some of the original stuff that made it famous and some new 3-D animation that people seemed to love. I highly recommend checking it out; definitely a good way to spend a Saturday if you are looking for something different to do in Atlanta. read more

The laser show was entertaining but probably not worth seeing more than once. There were advertisements at the beginning which I though was kind of weird and there was some very in your face patriotism and southern pride. Some parts were definitely cute and it's kind of nice to lay out on the lawn and relax. It's not a bad way to end a night, but I probably wouldn't bother seeing it again. Very unique experience. Great idea to project something on the mountain and to add fireworks and fire! It has opportunity for improvement with better laser graphics and music. In the interests of full disclosure, my family and I have been going to this show since we first moved to Atlanta in the mid 80s, and throughout my childhood even after we moved away we made a point to return as often as we could. Stone Mountain Park in general is a very, very nice park right off of a major metropolitan area. The camping facilities are pretty solid, and there is tons to do. It's perfectly realistic to set aside 2 days to explore the park fully and have plenty to do. The laser show has improved steadily since my earliest recollection of the show ('88 or '89) and now it's integrated with some decent pyrotechnics. It's a 45-minute, generally southern-pride themed show that at one point brings the actual carving on the face of the mountain to life to the tune of an Elvis Presley Dixieland cover. Other standards include The Devil Went Down To Georgia and various area-college fight songs. It's definitely worth the $10 parking fee to see the otherwise free laser show. Also, for $10 a head, you can sit in the VIP Terrace and enjoy a free Coca-cola product and unlimited popcorn before the show starts. Honestly, the value here is mixed. On a super crowded or wet day (show is rain or shine, unless there's lightening), it's probably nice to have an actual folding chair and not be crammed in blanket to blanket with other people. It also allows you to arrive at the park later, as you don't have to stage a sit-in on the Memorial Lawn to save a good seat. On the downside, the terrace is off the the sides of the Memorial Lawn, so the view is somewhat at an angle. Bottom line - good, cheap family fun. In the event anyone in authority from SMP is reading this, the Park really should consider adding skyboxes on top of the pavilion above the memorial lawn with air conditioning and piped-in audio. Honest to goodness, the pricing power for a reserved booth is probably significant. read more

What an incredible view. staff was great tram ride was very reasonable, the snack bar on top of the mountain is very expensive, 10 bucks for two slushies, but hey your a captive audience. They do let you bring your own stuff, I would recommend bringing a pick nick basket and some type of but cushion so you can sit and have lunch on top of the mountain and not have your but fall asleep like mine did, it was so far asleep it was having dreams of its own. we spent a few hours on top just admiring the view watching the storms roll by and each others company. this is a must do if you are anywhere near Hotlanta. and on Saturday night there is a laser show that is just cool read more

The show was underwhelming to me. I've always wanted took go, but it wasn't what it was made out to be. The laser didplay and the music did not fit together. I would have given it 1 star but I gave one extra for how happy the kids on the lawn were after the show and the July 4th fireworks. Also an extra star for how well the park dealt with traffic after the packed July 4th show and fireworks. The was pretty much no wait for us to get on the road home. I don't understand other reviewers considering this to be a racist event. Are you serious? Yes it highlights the civil war as it should,being one of the most important events in u.s. history. It did not glorify racism or the rebel opinions. The civil war montage actually end on a more unified note. Don't be more ignorant than the thing you are claiming is ignorant. Now that that's said, I was a little disappointed this year as the content has changed quite a bit. Several key pieces were cut (no god bless the USA??) and some of the new music didn't seem to fit. I first saw the Stone Mountain laser show a few years back, when, as a college student, I would come to ATL on weekends to visit my then girlfriend, now my wife. The laser show was a fun, cheap and romantic date night for us. We'd pay the $10 to park, spread a blanket on the lawn and have a small picnic while watching the show. Even then, the racial implications of certain aspects of the show, and Stone Mountain itself, was not lost on me but despite that, I couldn't help but enjoy the show. It's music, lasers, animation and fireworks ...I mean come on! Fast forward a few years to when I became an official ATL resident and ended up taking visiting family and friends to stone mountain a few times a year for the actual park, for "snow mountain", the laser show and everything else. They loved it all! Again, despite the obvious uncomfortable parts, I managed to still get a child-like giddiness from the mere thought of going to stone mountain. With the fun attractions, yummy food stalls (funnel cakes, giant turkey legs, cotton candy, the works!) 4D show, riding the skyview, seeing the magic of the flying snow princess and more, Stone Mountain was my ATL Disney world! Now, fast forward to THIS year. It'd been a couple years since I'd visited stone mountain, I'd missed it and longed to return but this summer brought with it all the confederate flag controversy and I almost considered giving up Stone mountain altogether. But, when I thought about it, I realized that although there are MANY changes the park can, and SHOULD make in the vein of racial sensitivity, Stone Mountain still seems to evoke so much happiness and fond memories for me. It reminds me of carefree college days, falling in love with my wife and the joy of seeing the smile on my niece's face when she experienced Stone mountain for the first time. Still, the confederate flag controversy really clouded my view of the park and brought the uncomfortable feelings I would normally suppress to the forefront. But, despite my mixed feelings, when my bro-in-law came to visit ATL for the first time a few weeks ago, I decided to take him to the laser show because I thought he would enjoy it. Plus, I'd heard the laser show had been recently updated and I, myself, wanted to see it even though I worried about how I'd feel about park now. When we got there, I realized the parking fee had risen to $15 so that was the first change. We arrived about fifteen minutes before the show started which is VERY late and we knew it. It took us a good ten minutes to find a parking spot. When we finally did, we hustled to the lawn and our mouths dropped when we got there.We couldn't even see one blade of grass, literally every square inch was taken. There had to have been over five thousand people there.Ordinarily we would never have attempted to come on a weekend in the middle of summer, but it was his last night in town so it was a must. There was absolutely nowhere to sit on the massive lawn but after walking around a few minutes we found some large rocks off to the left side of the mountain that gave us a pretty good view. As soon as we sat down, the show began. I love how prompt it is! Even though I was watching with skepticism this year more than any other year, all it took was a few seconds and I was ALL IN. I was rocking to the music, screaming at the fire show and singing my heart out, it felt like my first time back in college all over again.The laser show has gotten even better! With the addition of a few more awesome pyrotechnics, some computer animation that makes the mountain at times seem 3D and at other times seem as if it's crumbling in front of your eyes--kinda scary but cool. They also added new music like Pharrell's "Happy", John Legend's "All of Me" and outkast's, "Hey Ya" . All improvements to the show made me so happy I came and my brother in law was absolutely in awe. I found that, despite everything, the show fills me with as much joy as it always has and I will probably be back again the next time we have an out of town guest in our home. read more

Y'all. Don't go! This show ties for the most ghastly production I've ever seen. (For the other first place winner, see my review of Princess Cruises and skip to the bottom.) It felt like a joke it was so bizarre and of such poor quality. I went on the 4th of July with some friends because I've been in Atlanta for over two years and hear this is a must-do. The show started 20 minutes late, and then had a few laser commercials for the sponsors, which would've been fine if the show hadn't been completely awful. By that I mean, the entire show is just a series of completely random animations projected onto the mountain with lasers along with some random songs that no one knows or likes. To illustrate this point, here are some of the animations, and the rough order in which they were played: A pigeon riding a bus, some post cards, some confederate generals deciding they feel badly about fighting on the wrong side of the Civil War [pretttttty sure this is historically inaccurate], then a princess and a dragon, then Star Wars, then a bald eagle and an American flag... All of this with COMPLETELY random music being played along. It was just one gigantic non sequitur. This all lasted FIFTY minutes. Not to mention the fact that it was so crowded that a substantial number of us were standing for the entire production. Everyone around us was so bored that here are some of the comments we overheard from our neighbors in the crowd: 1) Young boy, about 8, "Mom. This is very boring." 2) Young boy, about 10, to his parents, "How long have we been standing here?" His mom, "About ten years, honey." His dad, "Nah, only like four days." 3) Friend in my party, "Oh my gosh, when will it stop?" Random person in front of us, "No one knows." By the time the laser show was over, about a fourth of the crowd left before the fireworks even began because we were just so overwhelmingly bored and antsy after that fifty minutes of actual torture. I will say that the fireworks we saw as we walked to our car were really awesome. It was a solid fireworks show. And as we were leaving we saw a ton of people who had set up lawn chairs in the parking lot right outside the gates. They had an AWESOME view of the fireworks without having to get into the crowded mess and without watching the lasers, and they were close to their cars for a quick getaway after the show. If I ever were to go again (which I will not) I would consider watching the fireworks that way. But seriously, if you value your time, do not go to the laser show. It is painful. read more

This was a good show, not great, but not bad either. Some of the laser tricks i havent seen before. As for ad, i agree with other yelpers this show is built around sponsers. We were at VIP seating, which was well worth it. I would suggest every1 spend the $15 and get it. If u come early say around 7 like they suggest, i would do that, u will find grt parking. It gets very bz very quickly. Bring a fogger for the bugs, show is good hr long, with fireworks. If u r early u can take ur kids to the splash works, they r very easy going with that, it was pretty hot today. read more

Now, even to park near the mountain, you have to pay additional $$$ along with $20 we pay at the gate, not like first come first serve. Our experience here was great. We thought the show started an hour before it did, and thank goodness we got here early. It was packed. The laser show put laser animation to popular songs. They played classic, current, and popular songs that mention Georgia. I really had fun watching the show, but I thought it was a bit short. Also, I thought half the show was filled with advertisements. I understand the show needs sponsors, but this seemed excessive. Overall, if I was in the area, I'd go back. Tonight's show was horrible. The lawn is fenced off to replant. So everyone was compressed into a third of the normal space The speakers were not working. So it was hard to hear announcements prior to the show and the music during the show while people were talking and kids crying. Kids should not come if they are afraid of fireworks! read more

I enjoy the show and while its not as many fire works as I like, it serves its purpose. If you've never been I suggest you go. Be mindful of the kiddies, I almost lost a foot once from the kiddies running around before the show. Bring a blanket and snacks, pile up the car with the fam. You have to pay for parking, 10 bucks. There are two types of people in this world - those who like big crowds, and those who stay away from them like the plague. If you fall into the latter, be afraid...be very afraid. I live in Atlanta and have been to the Laser Show several times over the years. My family and I went this past Sept. weekend and it was crazy-crowded. I figured with it not being summer, but not quite fall yet, that we'd get a break on the crowds. But, I'd estimate 10,000 people were there. It was 9/11 memorial weekend and I just kept thinking about how easy it would be to sneak in a weapon in a cooler and take out a ton of people. The security is, understandably almost non-existent, or at least it's geared more towards reactivity than proactivity. However, that means that you can still bring coolers and whatever else you want to the show. But the show itself was OK. I purchased VIP tickets and while that did get you up off the ground, it didn't really get you much more than a big blanket wouldn't get you. Since the private entertainment company took over Stone Mtn. it's gotten far more commercialized. The laser show didn't start till almost 9 p.m., well past dusk. There were probably 10-15 commercials before the show even started and when it did, it was roughly 50% lasers and 50% projection. If I wanted to watch a movie, I'd do it at home. And the lasers they did show...well, I just think in 2011 we can do more with lasers than stick figure-like outlines of things. To coin a phrase my 4-year old uttered about 5 minutes into the show, "This is lame." And the parking and exiting the park when it was done...ugh! But, we got through it and now everyone got it out of their system, at least for another five years or so. read more

I attended the laser show last year with my nieces. Having not been to the show for many years, I was looking forward to the changes in the technology. I was somewhat underwhelmed, but nonetheless enjoyed the outing. Many people arrived early to jockey for the best seating and to spend time picnicking on the lawn. The musical selections for the show were diverse and the fireworks made me feel like a kid again. However, the show may seem juvenile and corny to some and may seem heavy on the "South will rise again" theme for others. read more

Was there with the family July 4th 2015. Listen folks, its a LASER SHOW. And it is really reasonably priced (parking) and in a beautiful, natural setting. Of course it is dated. It's a LASER SHOW!!!! I was pleased; My 5 year old loved it. Combined with the fireworks it is a pretty long display. If you are a fireworks freak go somewhere else. The fireworks are great but not as long as fireworks only shows. Honestly my geeky mind looked at it in an historical point of view, as an old school laser show. We had a wonderful day; after the rain cleared the park filled up quickly and the staff was well equipped to handle everyone. The unbelieveably long tram line (out into the parking lot; scary shocking OMG line) only took an hour. I'm sure the plans are in motion, but when they upgrade the projectors and media we'll be blown away. read more

I went to this in 1989, 1999, and 2016. Don't pay for seats because the lawn is fine. Arrive at least 45 minutes early to get a spot. You can probably get away with bringing booze in violation of the rules, but it's way too crowded and full of families with kids for anyone to get too crazy there. The show is still a series of unrelated short laser animations (plus some flame plumes and fireworks here and there). As a child, I guess I was entertained, but as an adult it is difficult not to notice how disjointed the presentation is, and how the ending is simply nationalist propaganda. It starts with some shameless plugs from corporate sponsors, and moves into (in no sensible order) homages to local sports teams, Southern pride (which means cartoon chickens and Lynyrd Skynyrd), Star Wars (?!!), some story about a knight and princess, Georgia musicians, geometric images out of a Pink Floyd concert, and of course the perennial animations of the Civil War and Devil Went Down to Georgia- I specifically recall Robert E. Lee breaking his sword in the '89 show, and it happened again this year. After this absurd cut-and-paste job, it takes a sharp turn into flagrant nationalism. They flash up a bunch of flag, military, and 9/11 imagery, and they ask the crowd to stand for the Star-Spangled Banner (mind you, at the END, and without an actual FLAG, just laser ones). This didn't feel like a legitimate thanks to first responders or the military, just fake patriotic cheese. For what it is, it can be fun, but manage your expectations. read more

I haven't been to the Lasershow in several (and I mean several) years. The last time I came in 2007 I was on a date and tonight I came with some girlfriends. The Lasershow is nice to visit with your family or even by yourself. Be prepared to walk because it is a distance from parking. Unless you have an annual park pass, you will be paying the $10 bucks to get in (per car), unless you live nearby and walk in (no fee). Don't expect hip hop to be playing, unless it's a major crossover song (like Pharrell's "Happy"). During the show you will hear a lot southern music (Elvis, Little Richard, Ray Charles, and some county hits I'm not familiar with). Seating is on the open lawn, so bring chairs and blankets. You can even bring snacks. Check it out one night. read more

For a laser show there was no lasers. It was all lights and projections. They said they updated the technology. That is not true. They said there would be drones. There was no drones. They said there would be pop music. Not a single pop song. They couldn't even fit in a Beyoncé song?? Calvin Harris? Cardi B? Nothing. And not to mention there was so much American propaganda!! My children love the laser shows! They have so much fun every time we come.

The laser show is an Atlanta suburbia tradition. Where else can you find a screen the size of the side of a mountain (oh wait, it IS the side of a mountain) to project laser images on? That in itself is pretty darn cool. The process is generally this. If you want a parking spot and a decent location on the lawn, you arrive several hours before showtime and stake your claim with a blanket. You have a picnic, play cards (we bring UNO), and hang out until showtime. Concessions are available and about an hour before showtime the vendors with the light up stuff start wandering around selling their wares. If you have kids, they WILL want some of the blinking, flashing, spinning souvenirs. Just accept you will blow $20 and move on. Promptly at 9:30pm, the show will begin. Now let's remember you are in the Atlanta 'burbs, which last time I checked is in Georgia, and Georgia (unless they moved it) is in the south. The music selections and laser graphics will pay homage to the south in general and Georgia in particular. Gasp! Shock! Is that allowed? Why, yes. Yes it is. ;-) Since the lasers are being projected on a mountain that has the images of confederate solidiers on it, the original producers of the show seemed to feel they needed to acknowledge that in some way. The way they did that was to outline the carving of the men, fill in the images of their horses, and then have them "ride" across the mountain. It is without a doubt one of the highlights of the show because the effects are amazing. One of the figures then wields a sword and breaks it over his knee, which symbolically signifies the end of the civil war. Those two pieces of the sword then form the northern and southern states at the time of the war and they flip around and rejoin, which symbolizes the fact that the nation was unified once again. This always gets a loud cheer from the audience because Yay, the war is over and we are all Americans. That's a good thing, right? At which point the show becomes a flag waving, thoroughly patriotic tribute to America. Sam the Eagle would be proud if the Muppet Show were still on. Finally, fireworks go boom, boom (at which point locals and repeat visitors will make a mad dash for their cars) and the crowd on the lawn goes oooh, aaaah. If you wait until the announcement that the show is over, take your time leaving and save some gas because it will take a good 30-45 minutes for the traffic to start flowing out of the parking lot bottle neck. All in all, it is an entertaining way to spend an evening. Unless you prefer not to see or hear anyting about the south or if visuals involving confederate soldiers and the civil war (even in a way that does not celebrate or glorify the confederacy) are offensive to you. If so, then you can either stay away or you can show up and laugh at the "dumb rednecks." Plenty of people choose to do the latter, so you certainly wouldn't be alone. read more

The laser show itself is just OK, overall I'd give it 3.5 stars. The laser portion has a dated feel. The first part were the area sports teams, most of which got little to no reaction. There was lots of Georgian musical artists and related songs (Devil Went Down To Georgia was a good one), and that sappy Mariah Carrey song, Hero. It is obvious though that Stone Mountain has sunk a lot of money into the show. The bright lights around the perimeter of the field dim and in their place these other lights start up, synchronized to the music. The sound for the show was good. They did do some neat things with their projector on the mountain. They made the generals and their horses come alive, a waterfall appear, and flowers erupt all supposedly from the side of the mountain. That part was very cool. I would have added a star if the show had had more fireworks. The ones they did have really are spectacular set against the backdrop of the mountain. I was really surprised by how CROWDED the field got prior to showtime. We were enjoying the park that day so had laid out our blanket hours before showtime. It was irritating that large groups were cramming in just before showtime. People were literally putting their blankets on top of our stuff. No kidding, it was blanket to blanket with hardly any grass visible by showtime. All those people so close together could have been disastrous. But besides one dumb guy smoking everyone else behaved. Watch out for kids running around- you may get stepped on or hit with some glowing item the park sells. I got hit in the head with a light saber! Still, the weather was great, the scenery gorgeous and the mood undoubtedly American. And the show is FREE, right?!? You just have to pay to park, so for $10 you can load up the minivan, bring lunch and enjoy the day. read more

Great show and lots of fun with friends and family. I will recommend this lazer show for good time year round!!

The laser show starts at 8:30 and lasts for about 40 minutes. Not much of an actual laser show more like a projector that points directly at the mountain but then again it's all for fun and the kids. Be sure to save a spot for yourself bring a blanket and snacks (hopefully your responsible it that department). Parking is a jam but not impossible to find good one, there are some really good parking up close for the quick eye. This was my second visit and should have gotten the year round pass $30 from the first time instead of paying $15 over and over again. The show consist of the history of Atlanta, dedication to firemen and more. Somewhat educational for the youth and entertained for the young age till 13. Plenty of baby strollers everywhere. The music is somewhat thrown off, I heard it wad the same from years ago just a few updated music added. Other then that check it out for yourself, recommended for a full day conclusion at stone mountain. The best part is the cool fireworks I'm such a kid for. I did get excited I have to admit. I did get the year round pass and this will be my go to spot for serenity, hanging outdoors and a good jog. read more

I've been a fan of the park for several years. I am so impressed with the creativity and innovation of the lasershow designers and every week we find something new to do (inexpensively) in the park. A few years ago we used the lasershow to let our toddler work off the late night wiggles before a late bath and bedtime ( a few times a week). We decided tonight that now that he's 5 he wants to watch it nightly. I don't know if we can do nightly, but a few times a week is a must. This summer we explored the educational quarry, wild animal show, and the (flower) nature trail for the first time and have been to the park over 200 times. REFRESHING! read more

It's a wonderful thing to take people from out of town to. Very rich in Southern and American pride. I'm from the north myself, but still find the South's history intriguing. My husband even took me here for our first date! We had a picnic with KFC on the lawn and watched the Lasershow afterwards. Can't beat the price :-) read more

The show was amazing. My only problem was with the music played before the show. Don't get me wrong it was fun and somewhat danceable I just think it would be nice to hear some music from this decade. read more

I finally went to the laser show after being in Atlanta for 13 years. So let me start with the good points. It was not hot this weekend, the grass was soft, the finger sandwiches were great, the samosas were fantastic, the fireworks were bright and loud, the parking lot was empty after we waited a half hour to leave, and I found a crushed penny machine on the way out of the park. Now the bad....the show itself. I came away feeling like I did not love America and the South enough and that I needed to like outdated technology more. I get so tired of every time anyone mentions UGA people hoot and holler like the team is relevant outside the state lines. Also I wondered on a matter of etiquette, do you really need to stand through the second verse of the national anthem, especially if you never knew there was one. Call me a commie but the whole thing seemed to play off the nature redneck inside everyone that grew up in the South. I now understand what the show is and have no desire to go back without children. The whole show was not bad and there were a few effects I found cool, like the fade from laser show to mountain was pin point enough you did not notice and the tree effect by the lake made it look like the wind was really blowing. read more
