I LOVE the way my hair looks, as dyed by Carlos, but won't be going back to Thomas Shelton Hair Design based on the customer service/way I felt while there. Here's why:
I went to Thomas Shelton based on the excellent Yelp reviews and photos of gorgeous and funky hair that matched what I wanted done with my hair. I've been wanting to go green for at least a year, and finally worked up the courage to make an appointment and do it! So, thanks Yelp!
My first experience was less-than-stellar and I left with hair that looked exactly as it had when I walked in. I emailed them, was given another appointment, had my hair re-done, and it now looks AMAZING. I get so many compliments, love seeing it in the mirror or over my shoulder, and am really pleased with the outcome.
Why I won't be going back: In my first experience, I was made to feel embarrassed, was not ever (not once) asked how I wanted my hair cut or styled, and the dye that was used a) wasn't what I asked for and b) was invisible to the naked eye. In my second experience, where I asked for dye that would be visible (I did want green hair, after all!) I was made to feel like I was asking for something really extraordinary by asking to have the color corrected. I think a big part of finding a salon and hairstylist is finding someone who you can really talk to about what you want/has their own vision they can share with you for your hair, and I just didn't get that here. I go into a long story, below, but that's the gist and why, even though I love my hair and would like to be able to go back, I just don't feel like I can.
Let me begin by saying that Carlos was always very nice, but that in addition to being real embarrassed, I felt like he didn't WANT to engage with me or to have me as a customer, which felt crappy. It was one of those 95-degree days that's at least 100% humidity. I didn't walk far but was POURING sweat. I was offered water, had a fan pointed at me, was then given a towel, and was asked for the rest of my stay there if I was "okay" --all this despite my saying "hey I just sweat a lot, I'm not from a humid place so it just takes me a minute to cool down. It's really embarrassing, but I'm fine." I'm sure this wasn't their intention, but the effect was that I felt shamed for being hot and sweaty for my entire visit, even after I felt like I'd been really clear that they were embarrassing me. it's one thing to be considerate of a hot person, but it's entirely another to make a big deal out of something when someone repeatedly asks you not to.
Even after showing Carlos photos of what I wanted, I just didn't feel like he understood/heard what I wanted done to my hair. I asked questions, as I've never dyed my hair green, but when I asked him questions, he brushed off my concerns and said "green hair will never look natural," which hadn't been my question or concern. When he unveiled my hair and I told Carlos I couldn't even see the color and expressed my concerns he said it was just the bad lighting in the salon and brushed me off. He later took me outside to see it, and you could kind of sort of see it in the light maybe if you looked right, but again I just felt like he was really annoyed with me and placating my concerns.
After 3 hours at the salon, I was the last customer there, and Carlos initially didn't want to style my hair and had someone else do it. At no point had he told me what styling would involve (45 minutes of ALL the hairspray and a curling iron) or asked if that was the way I would style my hair. When he cut it, he never once asked me how I wanted it cut, he just asked how much and started hacking it off. I've never been to a salon where I wasn't asked how I wear my hair, what style I want, etc.
So, in the end, I had a trim on a haircut that was fine, but certainly nothing new or different, and hair dye that no one could see in any light once I washed my hair for the first time. Once I emailed the salon, they made me a new appointment and Carlos did re-do my hair. This time, it was cooler so I didn't arrive sweaty, and I showed him the exact same photos I had the first time, but was less asking for his advice and more forceful in saying "I want this." Maybe I should have done that the first time, because I got exactly what I wanted, but I felt like he was still annoyed the whole time that he had to re-do it. I even saw him and a guy I believe was the owner talking and looking at me. Maybe they were just discussing how much longer I would take and it was completely innocent, but it felt really bad. read more
