First time going to Shinee - before and after
    Kayla C.

I've been to Shinee twice for balayage and she's blown me away both times. I used to put Sun In in my hair, which meant it was brassy and weak - she color corrected it to a great bright blonde and made it very soft. I went back for a touch up after four months and was just as happy as the first time. Also a note - she likes to focus on her work and not talk too much during the balayage portion, which is great because it means she is FAST - I was out of there in a little over 2 hours for a color, cut, blow dry, and style. I bring my laptop so I can do work during (the salon has WiFi). Would highly recommend Shinee to anyone wanting to do balayage or highlights!

Love my new hair!!! Done by Shinee, she is so sweet and talented, I'm on the moon!

Shinee's work made me so happy! She was also a joy to talk with. I am so so happy, and it got me feeling like a rockstar for the whole day. Thank you Shinee

Shinee is a miracle worker! It took me years to find a good balayage stylist in DC (with many failed attempts at other salons) until I met Shinee at Talio Hair Design. Shinee completely transformed my hair with natural-looking balayage that I have always wanted, and did it even more beautifully than in the pictures I showed her! Also - the salon is clean, customer service is great, and they serve you free cappuccino. What more could a girl want?

Foliage = foils and balayage by Shinee

I was apprehensive about going to a new colorist in DC but I'm glad I stumbled upon Shinee at Talio Salon (thank you, Yelp!) I was looking for a colorist who *really* knew how to do balayage so I took a chance after seeing Shinee's Instagram feed. As I waited briefly for my appointment, I noticed her previous customers had come out with really nice color, which put me a bit more at ease. When it was my turn, Shinee listened to what I wanted and made sure I was okay with her color recommendation. I couldn't be happier with the "caramel bronde" result. It's natural, bright and has depth. Highly recommend Shinee!

I LOVE this place. I have fine, dark (3B) curly hair and it's almost impossible to find a place that won't implicitly discriminate against "difficult" hair types. Shinee was amazing: she talked to me about what I wanted, how I typically wear my hair, and how I care for it. She took that information and gave me the best color and cut options. I was so happy with the result. This was my first time here and I'm definitely coming back.

Absolutely amazing job! (Feel free to skip the whole story and go to the end to see what I suggest) I'm a bleach blonde Florida girl who has been dying my hair with that $3 boxed hair dye from Walmart since probably the 7th grade. I was 100% a non salon believer. Why would I go drop a whole paycheck to have someone do my hair for me when I can do it myself? Psh I'm not that lazy or stuck up. UNTIL...my father had decided to give me money to get my hair done as a birthday gift. At first I wasn't sure about it but my hair was pretty messed up it was going to be very difficult to fix.... you see I had dyed the underneath of my hair black and did my best to get it out but it never fully all came out...then I tried a new hair dye brand on my roots and it didn't work as well as planned and turned them orange...then I got dandruff so I bought Tea Tree which is a blue shampoo/conditioner and after using if for roughly two weeks it tinted my blonde hair green! So here I was: Orange roots...dark blonde/light brown underneath, and green blonde hair. It was not going to be easy to fix this....and would take a lot of $3 bottles of hair dye....so I decided to give in and try out the salon after all. They were absolutely wonderful when it came to customer service I must add.. I had a flight out to Florida in 5 days....you try finding a great salon in Georgetown with availability in the next five days..NOT EASY and on top of that I had a few scheduling conflicts and had to change the time of the appointment a couple of times and they were still very kind about it and made it happen! I was a crazy costumer...my appointment was on a Sunday morning and seeing as how it was my last weekend in the City I wanted to go out with my friends so the night before the appointment I go out till late at night and wake up in the nic of time to catch the appointment (I live across the street from the salon in gtown but had stayed the night in Maryland so I had to take the metro and bus in the rain!!!) I finally show up to the appointment about 15 mins late, unshowered, last nights makeup half on half off, in a skimpy top, all wet from the rain, carrying an over night bag bigger than me, and just a complete hot mess but instead of a Pretty Woman moment and the girls asking me if I've stumbled into the wrong place they were VERY SWEET! They got me a glass of water and put a flower in front of me! The atmosphere was very nice and the girls were very kind. They all talked with each other and asked each other for advice WHICH I LIKED I'd rather a hair stylist ask another for advice than have my hair stylist be quiet and do the wrong thing. All the women in the salon were great but the one who worked the miracle on me was named Mikaela Spencer she was GREAT I highly recommend and suggest her!!! She really knows what she is doing and she gave me a ton of advice on how to make my hair healthy and what products to use and what to stay away from. Because of her my hair went from orange, blue, blonde, and brown, TO ONE COLOR and I will NEVER go back to a $3 box of hair dye! Mikaela is obviously highly skilled it's amazing she was able to fix my hair. I walked in looking a mess and walked out look H O T I really wish we had done a before and after photo. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ (POINT OF THE STORY) GREAT salon! If you need to get your hair done I highly recommend them! Mikaela Spencer did my hair and she did an amazing job I would definitely suggest her if you need to get your hair colored. The costumer service is great, the environment is friendly, the ladies are lovely, it is pricey but worth it.

Balayage and cut with Shinee! She's amazing and very sweet and funny. I have long hair, and a lot of it. I warned the salon about this when I called to book an appointment. They definitely scheduled an appropriate amount of time. Process took about 4 hours start to finish and there was no one behind me, waiting to get into the chair. I love that I was not rushed. Shinee and I even had time to go outside and take some "after" photos for her Instagram. Shinee and I talked for 5-10 minutes about what I wanted and the price, then she started working. While Shinee was coloring my hair, another stylist came and asked her if she could do a cut on another client while my color was processing. After checking my foils, she told him no because my hair was processing fast and she wanted to stay close to me to keep an eye on it. This made me have SO much respect for her! She could've just taken another hair cut and asked someone else to check on me, but she took the initiative and responsibility to make sure it was done properly. I've had experiences in the past when the color is processing and you haven't seen the stylist in a while (or they are working with another client and are distracted) and you worry that you'll be forgotten, all while having bleach on your hair. I could totally tell that Shinee was focused on me and my results, which is a very reassuring feeling when you have bleach on your hair. We washed out the color in the back before the front and sides because it processed quickly. The price was a bit steep, $335 total. $250 for a balayage and glaze and $85 for haircut (which included styling). Balayage starts at $180 and a glaze is $50. Shinee explained the point of a glaze to me, but to be honest, I still don't understand what it is/does. I've heard of toners and conditioning treatments, and glosses, but not a glaze. She said they highly recommend it with color services, which is fine, but I wish that would have been indicated on the website, or by the salon when I called to book my appointment (as we discussed the price of each service on the phone and they never mentioned a glaze was normal or standard and that it is extra). It was just an extra cost I didn't anticipate. I would 100% recommend Shinee! She is an angel.

If you are a blonde living in the DMV, Shinee is the only stylist you should be going to!! I had no experience with coloring, and was suffering from a brassy, Sun-In mistake. Shinee took the time to learn about my hair and what it was that I wanted. She explained in detail about what was needed and how much that would cost. It is hard to put into words how thorough and precise Shinee is, I swear she put over 200 foils in my hair. The results were beyond what I was hoping and so natural, which was extremely important to me!! I will never be going to another stylist, Shinee is the best it gets. She is the perfect mix of warm, but also focuses on her work and is not overly chatty. Cannot recommend more highly.

    After highlights from Caroline!
    Rebecca O.

Caroline at Talio is the best! I started going to her for highlights in 2012, and I won't go to anyone else! When I first went to her, I had never gotten my hair colored and was very nervous. She reassured me, and made sure that my biggest fear (yellow looking hair) would not happen. She always listens to what I want, and will make suggestions based on what she thinks will work for me. The finished product always surpasses my expectations. The salon is clean, everyone is friendly, and they always offer water, coffee, soda, etc. Highly recommend!

I got my hair highlighted a few months ago by Shinee and it was beautiful! I'm super picky being a natural blonde and always worried someone will end up giving me "fake" looking highlights. This was not the case, the color was beautiful and very light. It was done at the end of September and has always grown out very well, and still looks very natural even with my natural roots coming in.

    Deborah W.

Shinee did a beautiful color correction and balayage. The high regard I read about her work here is right on.

    Amanda K.

I had never had such an incredible salon experience. I went back in December and my hair still looks great. It's all thanks to Shinee! I am a broke college student and I was looking for a way to treat myself but not too crazy. And shinee was upfront with me about prices and services from the start. She really listened to what I wanted and I was so so appreciative. I will only come back here in DC.

I also understand why my appointment needed to be rescheduled. My issue is not with the policy, it's with how I was treated. I was made to feel like an inconvenience from the moment I walked into the salon. I had a 12:45 p.m. appointment and called before leaving home to let the salon know I was running about 10 minutes late, which is their stated grace period. The receptionist told me she would let Sera know. At 12:56 p.m., when I was literally one minute away from the salon, I received a call saying Sera could no longer see me because I was late, and she had back-to-back clients. While I was disappointed, I understood. I asked if I could still come in briefly to speak with Sera because I wasn't even sure I needed a full highlight service, and the receptionist agreed. When I arrived, Sera immediately told me I needed to reschedule and seemed unwilling to discuss my hair beyond commenting that the back was "really dark" and explaining that she had returning clients scheduled after me. She didn't seem to know or care that I was a returning client. Sera had done my hair in February, and I came back because I had really liked her work. Not recognizing me in and of itself is not a big problem--I know a lot of people sit in her chair--but it made the interaction feel impersonal and left me wondering if she'd even prepared for my appointment. I was fully prepared to work with Sera and the receptionist to find another date and time that fit both of our schedules. Instead, both were unhelpful, dismissive, and rude. This experience was especially difficult because I have pretty severe alopecia areata that, thankfully, is now well controlled with medication, allowing me to grow most of my hair back. That said, I wore a wig for five years after losing most of my hair, so finding a stylist I trust is still an incredibly vulnerable and anxiety-producing experience. Every time I see someone new, I have to explain my hair loss and why I prefer a lived-in color that doesn't require overly frequent trips to the salon. I chose to return to Sera because I thought I had found someone I could continue seeing. Instead, I left feeling embarrassed, dismissed, and genuinely upset. I walked out of the salon, called my husband, and cried like a reprimanded little girl. I am a 35-year-old grown-ass woman. Policies are important, and I respect them. Kindness and professionalism are just as important. Had the situation been handled with empathy and respect, I would have happily rescheduled. Instead, I left feeling less like a person and more like a time slot or a dollar sign. It seems like Sera may have enough clients that turning one away isn't a big deal, but I was respectful, cooperative, and ready to work with her to find another appointment. I deserved that same courtesy and respect in return.

Over the past five years, I have regularly visited Japanese hair salons in Los Angeles, New York City, and Boston while traveling frequently. In those experiences, even when a haircut did not fully match my preferred style or length, the technical quality was consistently strong, and any adjustments were handled professionally. Unfortunately, this experience was very different. One of the defining characteristics of a Japanese haircut is the smoothness, softness, precision, and careful organization of the layers. In my case, the cut lacked those qualities and appeared uneven and poorly structured (the photo from the back). I was also disappointed by the salon's management. Based on my experience, the overall operation and quality control did not reflect the standards typically associated with Japanese salons. Update (May 2026): Over the past 4 years, I have been with my Japanese hair stylist in New York. I returned to the salon to see Keiko because I was hoping to find a long-term stylist in Washington, DC. I had not had my haircut for 7 months prior to that because I delivered a baby in December 2025. Ozuki appeared to be one of the few salons in the area offering Japanese hairstylists. Immediately after the appointment, the haircut looked good due to the styling and blow-dry. However, within a few days, the shape became difficult to manage and appeared increasingly unstructured. The photo on my ID, taken approximately three weeks after the haircut, reflects how the cut settled over time. In contrast, the Japanese haircuts I have received elsewhere typically maintain their shape and balance for several months. Despite my concerns, I scheduled another appointment six weeks after the first haircut with Keiko because I genuinely hoped the issues could be corrected and that I could establish a relationship with a local stylist. At the same time, I let the management know that my haircut had bad form and hope that it can be resolved at the second appointment. Unfortunately, my interactions with management, Liz, were once again disappointing. Rather than addressing the concerns constructively, the response left me with little confidence that the salon could deliver the level of quality I was seeking. This is the first Japanese salon where I have repeatedly had unsatisfactory experiences. Based on the consistency of those experiences, I am not convinced that the salon operates at the standard typically associated with Japanese hairstyling.
