I stopped by on a weekday right at 11am when they opened. The restaurant is quiet, clean, and has nice decor. I ordered the asopao de pollo. The serving was enormous, but the flavor seemed bland. I really got a huge caldero of broth, rice, and a few chunks of chicken. I also ordered a side order of tostones and they were hot, fresh, and delicious. My waiter was very kind, prompt and polite. Came in Monday 5/29 for lunch it was great! Food tasted so yummy, we started with quesito frito with guava paste but they were out of guava paste so we settled with mayoketchup. Not my first choice, but we made it work. Drinks ordered : a sweet tea, morir soñando, coco rico, espresso, and two coquitos! The coquitos were Good!! Entrees ordered: Cubano Combo, Bistec Encebollado, Boricua Combo, Mofongo de Camaron al Ajillo, side of rice and habichuelas. Let me start off with my plate the Mofongo de Camarones; not what I pictured I got a massive mofongo ball, a cup of sauce that tasted like a salty caldo, and a pot of camarones in the garlic sauce. So my boyfriend decided on a Sunday afternoon that he wanted Sopa de Mondongo (Tripe soup) for lunch and we were on the hunt for it in Jax. The place he wanted to go to said that they had it on Sundays only but when he called they said they had the Sancocho, a meat stew that's similar but not what he sought out. I watched him die on the inside a little bit. I pulled out my Yelp app and found Latin House Grill quickly, open on a Sunday, and they had his Mondongo. It was a bit of a hike coming from the other side of the river to the Westside but based on past reviews I knew that it would be worth it. We got there and upon entering I felt like this place was THE SPOT to be on Fridays and Saturday nights. To the right was the bar, dance floor/live band/karaoke area equipped with a spinning disco ball. To the left was the dining area. The wait staff greeted us as we walked in a promptly sat us at a nearby table. Latin music was on point. You couldn't help but shake your shoulders to the beat a bit. My boyfriend convinced me to get a Malta to drink since I'd never had one before. It's a malt beverage brewed from barley and hops just like a beer but with no alcohol in it. I went with it and noticed how it immediately tasted similar to molasses. Not bad but for this visit I'll stick with just one. He ordered the Sopa de Mondongo, Chicharrones de Pollo (fried chicken bites) with black beans and yellow rice. Once again, he "Mmmm"-ed and "Oh my god"-ed and "'This reminds me so much of home" the whole time. He was in heaven. I ordered the Ensalada de Carrucho (Conch Salad) with a side of Maduros (sweet plantains). I saw a pic of the salad while researching the establishment so I knew what I was getting into. I was still surprised when they brought it out. It was a mini mountain of conch. I've only had conch before at the St. Aug Seafood festival and that was pretty good, but this was soooo much better and you get enough for the price. I'm surprised by all the bad reviews. We stumbled upon the establishment this past weekend. I will admit that the service was slow, but our waiter apologized and kept us abreast of what was going on. There were a lot of take-out orders, so we attributed the wait to a heavy amount of orders. The majority of the workers spoke Spanish, however after informing our waiter that we only spoke English, he graciously assisted us. The food was OUTSTANDING, hot and great portions. COMIDA FINALMENTE I was so happy walking into this place. The outside is deceiving! This was such a pleasant surprise. It really set me back. It was like walking into a restaurant in Puerto Rico or DR. Immediately we questioned the staff about "Latin Nights." Her response "of course." This place is legit. There is a delay in our response because we are already tapping our feet and moving our hips in our seats as we glaze over the menus. I grab some passion fruit juice and order the seco de chivo (goat stew) with maduros (sweet plantains). Huge glass of sweet passion fruit juice. It gave me goosebumps! The salad that came out was just shredded lettuce and one large slice of a tomato? Not surprised about the extremely simple salad but it was different for the lettuce to be shredded. The stew was definitely authentic but, like a pass reviewer, I agree someone has a heavy hand with the salt. But the meat was tender, juicy, and all the spices were present. All I was missing was a few slices of avocado on the side. The two things that stood out to me the most were the warm greetings in Spanish from those that entered and the singing from the kitchen. A moment passed where the music had faded low and the announcers on tv were quiet and I could here the faint sounds of someone singing in the kitchen. Happy workers normally add to the great vibe given to the customers. Planned on sharing the flan with a friend - but after our huge meals we were unable to eat another bite. This is a Latin restaurant of course so don't be surprised when the waitress speaks to you in Spanish. This did not hinder me from ordering anything. The menu includes a fair selection of entrees, all priced very reasonably. I decided to try a classic - the Cuban sandwich with a side of sweet plantains. To drink, I got a Malta. The food arrived in 5-10 minutes and was pretty good. The ingredients were fresh, the pork and ham were hearty, the pickles, cheese and mustard were tasty. The plantains arrived very hot and, while not as crispy as I prefer, were great. The overall environment can be described as busy but inviting. Small groups of people were seated enjoying their meals while the bar area contained a few men laughing over swapped stories. This place is very roomy, containing many tables, making it suitable for large parties. As a side note, the bathroom is kept quite clean. It's my second time here. We went for a friends birthday on a Saturday night. It's a nice small place and a good atmosphere. Music and a bar too! It was very busy and we had a party of 10+ so I expected a long wait on food orders. The food was good. The meat is very tender and flavorful. My only complaint is, it was salty. My mom ordered the bistec and said it was also tender and but salty. I give only 2 stars because our waitress was rude. When we told her we have 10 ppl, she rolled her eyes and got an attitude. She got mad when we told her we don't speak Spanish. Then when we were ordering food she asked for my name and she kept repeating it and asking if that's really my name. I said, "yes" and she's like ugh okay whatever. Then when she asked the person sitting across from me their name, which was a more common name, the waitress goes, "much better name!" I feel like it's almost impossible to call in an order here. I generally receive a busy tone or no-one answers the phone. What's the point of having a phone? The food here is average maybe not as good as another Latin restaurant within a 5 mile radius, but it is closer to home and I do attempt to go here instead, but it never works out since they only answer the calls about 20% of the time. I prefer not to wait on my food unless I am dining in or if the food is worth waiting on and it's not. In the meanwhile I'll make that extra 5-10 minute drive and pick up my order. read more
