Laura Drago is a life saver. Earlier this year, my business was failing, I was in crushing debt and a long relationship was coming to an end. I was the most depressed I've ever been in my life. My stomach was in constant pain and I was completely unable to motivate myself to work, which is terrible when you have a failing business. A friend referred me to Laura for acupuncture. As is almost always the case with alternative medicine, I was open minded but skeptical. How was acupuncture going to help me with depression? Over the course of several visits I found every one of my symptoms melting away. My stomach issues started to subside. My depression not only began to die down because of the treatment, but also because Laura takes such a consultative approach to her practice and just talking through these issues helped. AMAZING! I have these transformative experiences on Laura's table that stick with me - she treated me for stress on a Fri and on Sat afternoon I felt so deeply relaxed still - a deep change had happened on multiple levels. She seems to have a 6th sense (an intuitive knowing) which coupled with her vast technical knowledge, excellent listening skills and gentle touch make for an amazing experience. She's helped me with so many issues: low back pain, hormonal and menstrual issues, digestion, stagnation of blood and fluids and most importantly (but I was unaware until she showed me) how I hold on to stress in my body. Changed my life!! Laura has not only helped me understand health issues - which 3 western docs had not been able to properly diagnose - she has helped me move forward with a health plan that works for me and my lifestyle. Did not believe that a few needles could change my lift and how wrong i was. Besides being a totally chill person, she really is an amazing healer who focuses on the entire body, mind, and soul connection - finding a path for healing. My wife wanted me to try acupuncture to address my migraines and I was encouraged by all the positive reviews. The first session got off to a bit of a weird start as I was asked very very personal questions and had an opportunity to ask questions in return. I found the science behind the art flaky at best, but she could tell several things about me from pure observation so I was wiling to give it a try. We did two sessions that went ok, but then on the third - she simultaneously criticized my neurologist (a USC doctor) for the way she was treating me, and basically said that if I don't learn how to de-stress, take time for myself, and get on a schedule - that this is not going to help me. Not only did she just describe the definition of what would make migraines ok in an ideal but rather unrealistic world, but she also effectively said that what she's doing won't help without that. This makes me believe that acupuncture is not worth it's salt or really helpful in any way shape or form. Essentially, be completely stress free, come in once a week, meditate with some needles in you, and presto! She'll let acupuncture take the credit for your cure. Plus, it's not like I'm a pure workaholic, I work a normal job like everybody else and have normal life stresses. But, even if my fellow Yelpers or people who love acupuncture who disagree and have good results, of which I'm happy for you all, I find Laura adversarial and not helping her trade by being that way. I'm a very mellow person and I almost got into very heated argument with her. When I pushed back, she pushed back unapologetically and almost adversarially. Plus, while I expect alternative medicine providers (I'm an avid fan of chiropractic care) to say that what MD's choose to do to treat conditions is unwarranted and excessive, she did it in such a way that was wrong, and essentially called me crazy for following my neurologists advice. Bottom line, if you really do feel that acupuncture is helpful, of which I am doubtful of, I think another practitioner might be a better choice. read more

Let me start off by saying that I've always despised needles. I cry every time I have to get a shot or have blood drawn at the doctor. It's really embarrassing! Well, Laura exposed me to a whole new world of loving needles. They make everything better, from back pain, to anxiety, to hormonal problems. You name it and acupuncture can probably treat it. Being an intellectual, "question everything" sort of person, I went in to acupuncture already well established in my aversion to pseudoscience. In my youth, my mother had taken me to many "energy healing" type situations - all of which tended to give me more anxiety than actual medical or mental assistance. Surprisingly enough, acupuncture was still something I wanted to try. If only to be able to say, "I tested it for myself and it doesn't work." Maybe it was some masochistic whim to be filled with needles, maybe it was innocent curiosity, maybe I'm the kind of person to try anything once, or maybe it was just being frustrated with the typical MDs I'd roll through feeling worse after than when I went to see them. I'm not sure. But having made up my mind that I wanted to do it, I set out to find the "least pseudosciency" and "most likely to NOT puncture a lung" practitioner I could find. This was a tall order and took a few days : but when I came across Laura's website/blog I was instantly struck by her intellectual approach and no-bullshit attitude. On top of which, she was qualified in enough years and hands-on experience that I weighed the likelihood of her taking out a lung/nerve/[insert random fear of physiology ignorance] as being low enough to give it a go. So I did. Laura, first of all, is probably one the most sincere humans I have ever had the pleasure of meeting. I am fortunate enough in my life to be able to take that in and embrace it; but I certainly appreciate how that much raw truth - especially when it concerns you, the patient - can be something not everyone is ready for. She does her trade great pride in her approach and tact. At first her questions and want to know about you - the whole you - send the "pseudoscience" warning bells off. "Oh no," you think, " she is going to make me heal myself - I'll probably have to start going to the gym - and this is part of the plot." But I reigned in my paranoia long enough to realize : no, there's no plot here [ and no, no talk of gyms ]. She is actually interested in my health and well-being as a person. And my knee-jerk 'stop tricking me' response was actually more to do with my culture/generation ( and past experiences ) than anything to do with her. Neurosis, I've realized, is a tricky thing to navigate. But I digress. Here was a women who legitimately wanted to use her knowledge and experience to make my life better. You can find this in the dictionary under : "Everything I wish my doctors had been - but never were." Okay. So where's the proof ? And what were the results? I have presently been to see Laura four times. I have done the research and know that two things are fact : 1 - The body of scientific testing is sparse on the topic ( especially compared to drug testing ) 2 - Of the testing that has been performed, success rates in acupuncture of any kind are HIGHER than placebo success rates I personally experience a wide variety of sensations during the actual needle treatment ; but more importantly, I have noticed the following measurable differences : - I have more energy - My digestion has improved - I sleep deeper/more easily I don't pretend to understand what the hell is going on in my body - but I can tell you it's better. And Laura supports this progress by working with me to build a system of well-being ( de-stress, organize myself and my priorities ) to SUPPORT that work. And that money. I think it's logical. Human. Beautiful. She isn't just helping me - she is helping me build a structure to support the work we do. Both her investment in me and my investment in this treatment is something she actively wants to inject with longevity. As for the science? I continue to monitor and measure all changes by writing them down. I remain ever vigilant at how much my mind and how much my body are playing a part in my healing process. Like any good scientist, I won't stop until I've exhausted the amount of information I can possibly find. I went to see Laura for Plantar Fasciitis and a heel spur. I was sick of going to the podiatrist and did not want anymore cortisone injections.
