We all can hear and see ourselves when we're singing, but there are so many things we miss when we're alone. When you have a guide to pick up on those things and to notice your own specific patterns of behavior that tend to get in your way, you feel much more prepared to challenge yourself. I've gone from feeling embarrassed of how I sang at times to now feeling proud of what my voice can actually accomplish when all the gears are working properly. Anyway, Nevada's among the nicest guys I know (I've now known him for years and think of him as a friend) and still have no plans on ending our lessons. I really consider them more like an hour with someone who really wants you to be great--not there to just show you all he knows. He gets excited when he hears new things you've discovered in your own voice during lessons--it's all very positive. Being vulnerable is a huge part of voice lessons (a good thing to be when you're singing). Being shy is different, and something you can get over very quickly when working with someone like Nevada. My son started voice lessons at VOX via Zoom during 2020, transitioning to in-person for several weeks before heading off to college. He loved all of it and those Monday night lessons were a lifeline for him as his other choirs and school music classes were postponed due to COVID. His confidence grew, and he was accepted into his college's competitive top choir as a freshman (Matthew also helped him with his college admissions' supplementary vocal performance materials and he landed a vocal scholarship). The recitals are great milestones and provide a real sense of community despite the age and experience differences. I'd recommend him to any one at any level.

She has worked with several instructors over time, including Bex, Ari, and Luciana, and every single one has been amazing. Right now she is taking lessons with Sam, and we highly recommend him! He is incredibly knowledgeable, patient, and always brings such a great vibe to the lessons. We can clearly see my daughter's progress, and it is obvious that he genuinely cares and gets so excited seeing how much she has improved (whenever she learns something new or finally masters a piece they have been working on, you can see the joy on his face). I traveled to Portland for a concert and had serious problems with my guitar at rehearsal. He talked with me on the phone and he figured out my initial problem was a string issue. He didn't charge me and war very helpful. Because he was so helpful, I took my guitar to him after the gig to address a growing intonation problem. Barrett took the time to show me exactly what the problem was, a warped neck, and helped me deal with Martin to be sure it was still covered under warranty. He was able to repair the neck, a not so minor miracle, and I asked him to do a fret redres and setup as well. Bottom line is that he did fantastic job at a reasonable price. My guitar plays fantastic. Even though I live in Texas, where we have several fine luthiers, I will probably save my work for my trips to Oregon if possible. I cannot recommend Barrett more highly.
