Nope. Never again. Owner is extremely rude. Guitar Center gets my business from now on. Bet they won't be in business this time next year.

I went in to buy a bass and a practice amp. I got talked into buying this little…read morerecording/headphone device for the same price I wanted the amp ($160). I was told I had 30 days to return it. I didn't like it and tried to return it a few weeks later. What I wasn't told was that I'd only get $50 as in store credit if the box was damaged (just the box, not the actual product itself). The worst part was the guy looked up the resell price on a used version and it came to about $80, but he then took 35% off even though it's a return. I then wanted to buy an amp (What I originally wanted before I was talked into something else) and asked for something around the $150 mark. He then tried to talk me into an amp without telling me the price. I had to firmly ask what the price was twice before he told me it's $300. Even though I was visibly upset from losing $100 from a product I bought from them because the box was damaged. I finally got him to show me exactly what I wanted. If you go here, know exactly what you want and be firm about it so you're not talked into getting something you don't want that costs more money. Also know that the boxes their products are in are worth $100 so you can't return a perfect condition product, within their return window, if the box is damaged.

I highly recommend being very careful if you must bring your amplfiers there. It's for a repair work finished for my Mesa Boogie Mark III on 3/6/2022. I brought it for a crackling noise and it was just due to a bad 12AX7 tube (V1) due to bad contact on pins. They knew it but they additionally replaced a healthy volume pot, 2 healthy 30uF filter capacitors, while leaving one that was actually bad and underspec (20uF) which was worsening 60hz hum (which is the design weakness with this amp even with DC heater supply for V1). Total cost I paid was $100 + $15 + $16 + $10 + $125 = $266!! In addition, they didn't tighten up the top suspension screws which caused one 12AX7 tube to break during transport. It was not my first time taking the amp there because they are supposedly the only Mesa Boogie service center here. In 2018-2019, it was also them who installed the very JJ 20uF 500V filter capacitor that is underspec! I am engineer myself with a master degree in electrical engineering and I have been learning about repairing and building vintage tube amplifiers in past few years and now I know well enough. I still have all the receipts and documentation and the healthy parts that have been wrongfully replaced.

Help was offered as…read moresoon as I walked in the door and the employee immediately got to work after quickly diagnosing the issue. He told me it wouldn't be perfect since it is a very affordable bass and that I could purchase a full set up, but that it'd probably be a better investment to put that cost toward an instrument upgrade down the line instead. After a few minutes of adjustments, I was offered a cable to hook up to one of the in store amps to try it out. SO much of an improvement! I wasn't even charged for the service. I wanted to look at gig bags afterward but noticed they seemed to all be in an employee only area. A staff member almost immediately noticed me and showed me their options. When I said I'd do some more shopping around and would keep theirs in mind, there was absolutely 0 pressure to try to make a sale. The customer service was fantastic and felt very genuine--no pushing to make a sale or upsell something I didn't really need. Especially as a beginner who wouldn't necessarily know better, it's so valuable to feel like the person helping you actually cares about your best interest as opposed to just making a sale. Super happy with my experience and I'll definitely be back in the future for any of my musical needs!

We've all had our bad experiences with instrument repair, not many things can be so frustrating and demoralizing, which is why I've stuck with Mike and followed him through his many stops. He takes extra care to make sure I'm happy with the work, from explaining what I'll need upfront, to minor tweaks to suit my needs before the guitar leaves the shop. He even helped me figure out a few songs my cement fingers were having trouble with. I am fully confident in recommending Sound Service to you.

In my experience most charge an arm and a leg for routine work, and don't have much time on their hands to interact with their customers. After doing some inquiry into Mike's reputation (which was stellar) I decided to give him a call about refretting what was probably my most prized guitar. We spoke for almost an hour in person going back and forth about my options and his recommendations. Ultimately, his recommendation is what I decided to go with. I could not be happier with both Mike's work and his advice. My guitar has never played better and his refret job was superb. In addition his prices were fair and reasonable. Mike is a stand-up guy, excellent tech, and I wouldn't hesitate to call him for any work in the future.

Allegro has better hours than most of the shops in the Portland metro area, so I made an appointment with Craig to see some violins. The shop is right in their house, and while I think they prefer appointments, I believe you could also just stop in. Craig showed me two different violins--entry level and mid level. I went with the mid-level and will be doing a rent to own. His prices are good and the instruments beautiful. He tuned it for me, had me try it out, and gave me some options for buying rosin and the shoulder pad. He also showed me an app, pano, which you can use to tune the violin on your own. Pretty cool. I would highly recommend Allegro and Craig for your string instruments.

And Portland is not worth going to since the musicians and music stores there are even worse. Had several reasons why it was compelling to create a yelp account and share. Mainly so others dont waste anything by going here. Heard good things about some workers that have been there for a while that work in Pro Audio area. But they obviously were not there during the few visits Ive made. I originally dealt with a few managers, not sure if they are still there since last time I went there, they were nowhere to be found. One was named Carson and the other was from Hawaii--think his name was Kona. Maybe his parents are a fan of a certain beer? Both interactions were completely unprofessional. The first interaction was with Carson and he was not sure of--well much of anything really. Seemed like he knew of amps but when asking specs on a bass amp, he could not find. Kona seemed too distracted or on too much caffeine to bother asking. Then he proceeded to make his way to the drum area and play drums, rather loudly. The store seemed un-organized and hap hazard. Could not get help with tracking down something off website. Next time I stopped in, it was the same story. Did however manage to speak to the guy in drum area who seemed very chill and knew his stuff. Not sure of his name but had long black hair and was easy to talk to. Did not really need anything drum related but was nice to chat with. I actually asked to speak with a manager and waited well over an hour. Kona was the only manager at that time. He really seemed not interested in helping so I eventually just left. The last interaction with this store was in person and on the phone. My family and I have been trying to get my nephew some lessons on guitar and keyboard. I spoke to a guy named Mike who was nice on the phone and the few times when I stopped in to try to sign up, was no where to be found. It was like, does this guy even exist??? I gave it another try with calling and spoke to someone named Hunter who seemed just as clueless as the rest of the store--guess thats a pre req to work there? Had no idea of lesson info or promos--nor seemed interested in helping at all. So my best advice is dont bother driving all the way here to have your time wasted by people that dont know anything about the stuff in their store. Shame that its got like this. Too bad there is no more Sam Ash or Apple Music. Maybe Sweetwater will also get bought by Blackrock and expand stores to provide better experiences to people that know what they want. Your experience may vary but I doubt it. Irwin
