Years after quitting this longtime practice when a new dentist took over, my family is still being affected negatively. Dr. Shamad was HORRIBLE to me when putting in crowns--which I'm starting to think weren't even needed. He didn't give me enough novocaine or time for it to work before insisting that he had to start working--and he poured cold cement on an exposed nerve, which was the most pain I ever experienced in my life. He blamed ME for the pain. No bedside manner at all; no empathy. That was the final straw. Years later: my son needed emergency dental surgery because the crowns installed here were not done properly and infection had set in underneath them. Also, all three of the crowns that Samad gave me fell off and had to be redone by another dentist, costing me lots of money. Do not let this guy near your mouth. Maybe the other dentists are okay. I don't know. But proceed with extreme caution if you must go there. read more

Was given an estimate of over 10,000 dollars out of pocket for a one tooth implant procedure beginning to end. My insurance would have been charged the remainder of this outrageous estimate. $10,000 was MY cost. Ridiculous. Since it clearly sounded absurd, I went elsewhere for a second opinion. X-rays were done again, complete estimate work up... I now have an appointment elsewhere to have this one tooth implant for $450.00 dollars out of pocket, and $5000.00 is covered under insurance. Laurel Pines has a newer office at 204 Main St. My lumineer came off on a front tooth and Keisha at the front desk got me in immediately. I saw Dr Birchen and he recommended a crown. The crown was matched perfectly and the permanent crown done while you wait. I was so impressed with Keisha at the desk and Dr Birchen that I came back for 2 more crowns because another lumineer came off and one old crown was cracked . I would only see Dr Birchen if you decide to go to this practice. I really lucked out to get him not knowing any information about the practice at the time. read more

The fact that while I was getting my new veneers at my new Dentists office , You people call me to "to put me on the schedule " after I had called last month to release my records . Since I was close by I signed the release and all I want is for you to send my records on and leave me be . I came in for an urgent dental matter (front veneer came off). They were able to get me in quickly and the staff were very kind. After replacing the veneer same say, I asked how likely it was to happen again and the dentist said "oh that isn't moving again". 24 hours later it came off again. the office got me in within a few hours but a few more problems became apparent. As he was getting ready to put the same veneer back on, I asked if this was still The best treatment plan and Doc answered "no, it should probably be replaced with a crown, but we could try the veneer once more." I feel like if he didn't think that was the best plan and there was a better one, he should not have left that to the patient to ask. I had also notice the first time (and more apparent the second time) how rudely the dentist spoke to his assistants. Not just rude, but often sarcastically put them down during the procedure. It was so off putting to see him treat staff that way. As I was leaving and relaying what happened, the front desk person scolded me about not following my post treatment instructions, at which I responded that I never received any, written or verbal. (I did confirm later with the dentist that my case did not require any special post instructions). 48 hours later, the veneer came off again. The dentist asked me to come in and he would replace it with a crown free of charge. This helped me feel a bit better about the whole situation. They were very busy, and that's fine, but I had mentioned multiple times I metabolize the numbing agents quickly. They would inject the numbing agent them leave me in the chair for 30 -40 minutes, and by the time they came back it was wearing off and they would have to numb me again. They walked away a second time long enough for it to wear off again and I just had to endure the pain. I was told the pain from all the exposure should last only a couple weeks. 6 weeks later I was still experiencing the same level of pain. I couldn't even bite down on anything . There was nerve damage up into the bottom of my nose. I found another dentist, felt very heard, and they said my level of inflammation unfortunately now required a root canal. After that procedure all of my pain went away. You deserve a provider who is going to listen, present a good plan, and treat others around him with respect. One of the dentist drilled a hole in my wife's tongue and blamed it on her for moving her tongue. This dentist was immediately fired. There are too many dentists in this group and I cannot trust the quality of the dentists that are hired here. Front desk staff are great, though. But I would look elsewhere for a dentist. read more

Hopefully, you get better treatment than I did. The front office needs(ed) a big shakeup, all of my complaints could have been resolved with two phone calls. The dentists are very good and explain the process fully, I have a nursing background so I can speak medical language fluently. Dr Saheed (sp) sorry if I got it wrong, and Tammy had to step in and get everyone back tracking in the right direction.. The process for an implant lasted over 13 months and I couldn't go to a different dentist. I ended up having a meeting with the head of the practice and the manger. After examining me, ISABELLA (billing person)gives me an estimate of $3200 and tells me it's for a TOOTH EXTRACTION and BONE GRAFT IMPLANT. And HAD TO pay FIRST before any treatment. Keep in mind you are in so much pain you can't think. Wanted relief IMMEDIATELY so I agreed and paid with my CREDIT CARD, because she said she was going to submit the claim to my insurance. I have great insurance DELTA DENTAL PPO. The DR. SAMAD and ISABELLA the billing person knew for a FACT the insurance company WILL DENY the claim because the "TOOTH EXTRACTION and BONE GRAFT IMPLANT" were NOT SUPPOSE to be done SAME DAY. I had to make a fuss about antibiotics. They give me this high price tag and say when I pay this I can get help. I am left with no treatment and in search for another dentist. On Wednesday 8/31, I was in a lot of pain and called out from work. I immediately started searching for a nearby dentist. I don't usually call out from work, but I hadn't slept due to the pain. Laurel Pines returned my call and set me up for a 10am appointment. I cannot say enough great things about this practice and what a good job they did on me. I needed a root canal, but my insurance covered a lot of the work. It took a long time, but at the end of the day, I left with a new crown and I was no longer in pain. Let me start off saying I have tried resolving this issue between the office itself and the insurance company. I had an exposed piece of tooth sticking out of the back of my gum and was in extreme pain for a month. It caused me to stop eating and talking was excruciating because sharp piece of tooth was cutting into the back go my tongue. The Pros: They got me in quickly, addressed the issue with my exposed tooth, and quickly fixed it and goy me out and about without pain. The people at check in were nice. The Cons: Once the consultation was over they handed me a bill that I felt pressured to pay out of pocket before they could do the procedure. They took my insurance information so I'm not sure why they even showed me a bill to pay. This procedure took place in March 2021 and I still have not been paid back. They are in network with United Concordia TDP and did not send the correct information for it to be approved. I have been calling on and off for months and they have to send it to the appeals office so I can get paid. I was charged over $1500 when the procedure should've cost me about $200-$300 out of pocket according to my insurance. It's August 2021 and I'm still waiting on the appeals process to go through so I can get a good amount of money back. Hopefully I can update this review once I get my money. TLDR: Make sure that you get the insurance portion completely figured out before you pay a dime. read more

They are a rip off and are in the business of doing work that you don't need so they can overbill your insurance company therefore increasing your out of pocket cost to them. They did 3 X-rays on me that I did not need, then told me that my bridge needed to be completely removed, which it did not and that I would need all this extra work ... which I did not. I had an appointment today and I was extremely disappointed about it. Dr. Samad was so rude that I literally walked out. I've been receiving services from them for almost a year now and my experience was always good until I went for a follow up check up. I was about 10mins late to my appointment due to the traffic on BW pkway because of an accident nonetheless I made it. I received a cleaning and wanted to schedule the appointment for my implant. Dr. Samad's approach was rude and his comments were disgusting. I just received a fill in on 3 of my teeth in June then he goes to tell me a need another fill on the same teeth which was ridiculous. Then he makes a comment about me needing an implant. As a dentist you want to make your patient as comfortable as possible not for them to feel embarrassed or uncomfortable. Many ppl have fear of the dentist especially not wanting to feel judged. Not only is the dentist rude but the lady who does the billing (blonde strong looking lady) caused me to have an unpleasant experience during a previous visit. She's not nice and she's constantly adding ending extra money to overcharge patients. They hike the prices up extremely high and continually try to add additional services for money. The front desk staff are always nice as well as the dental hygienist who completed my cleaning. So unfortunate that I won't be returning as a patient. read more

Absolutely horrible stay FAR FAR away!!!! I came in for a wisdom tooth consultation that's it!! I have a dentist and don't need work on other teeth! Just wisdom teeth! Got there and dr Samad literally looks in my mouth half a second and says I need teeth pulled! 4 normal teeth and the 4 Wisdom teeth so 8 actually and one of them was a tooth I just had a root canal on July 1st at a root canal specialist not a dentist! It's July 28th as of today! No way I need it extracted! He tried to swindle me into getting all 8 out today and these were all on HEALTHY non cavity/infected teeth. Tried to tell me I NEEDED teeth cleaning, bone graph, and implants! Yeah not happening dr Samad! The kicker... are you ready?? I have military insurance and they are trying to take advantage of me so when I asked what the bill was "ma'am with insurance it's gonna be over $15,000" but when I called to make the appt they said they accepted my insurance. When I looked after leaving there he's out of network and doesn't accept my insurance so they LIED to me! Needless to say I won't be going back and thank god I didn't let him touch my teeth because I don't have the issues he speaks of! He just wants money!!! I was looking for some emergency dental treatment as it appeared I had an abscess forming around a tooth. Pros- Got me in at 9:30am on a Monday for an emergency walk in Accepted my insurance making it to where there was no fee initially for the day. Very friendly front desk/ dental assistant / dental hygenist Discounted day of cost for unexpected treatment not covered by my insurance Cons - From jump, every single person I spoke with, I informed them the main reason I wanted to come in was for antibiotics for the newly formed infection in my mouth. I have had a similar issue in the past and was prescribed penicillin to help reduce the infection so the swelling would go down. Not one person indicated it would be an issue to get such a prescription. I then met with Dr. Shawn Samad, who again I informed before any work was done that I mainly was there to get some form of antibiotics. He talked me in to getting a debridement cleaning which was not covered by my insurance so I would have to pay out of pocket for it that day ( I couldn't afford the full $100 right then but they were kind enough to let me pay $25 day off and pay off the rest later), and stated we would talk about antibiotics after the treatment. After the debridement, and now with a full mouth of pain I spoke with Dr. Shawn Samad again asking about getting some antibiotics at which point he let me know he doesn't prescribe them for the reasons I came in. I made it very clear from the moment I walked in to the office that I was there to try and get some antibiotics, so why wouldn't the doctor be transparent, before I paid out of pocket for a treatment, that he wasn't going to prescribe me anything? I wasn't even offered some simple ibuprofen for the pain caused by the debridement. I feel completely swindled by this dentist and taken advantage of. I was told by who I'm assuming is the office manager that I could either apply for a loan to get the tooth causing the infection extracted or I could go to a student dentist since I could not at the moment afford their office to do so. Like a lot of people, sudden emergency costs like this are a big deal and it would have been nice to know ahead of time (since he clearly knew) that I wouldn't be able to get a prescription from them. I understand he has his reasons for not being a dentist who gives out antibiotics for certain problems, but why then would he not be upfront and honest with me when I came in?? Why talk me in to an out of pocket cost only to tell me afterwords that the main reason for my visit was unattainable. TLDR; If you're coming for regular treatment, the staff is friendly and they'll work with you on payment troubles. If you're coming in for an emergency infection, make sure you 100% get your questions answered fully before getting any suggested treatments. read more

DO NOT COME HERE!!!! Writing this review as I sit in the waiting room still waiting 1 entire hour after my scheduled time (?) and this has happened every time I come in. I've needed a lottt of dental work since I had a freak accident and needed a root canal 10 years ago. I have seen a ton of dentists, endodontists, orthodontists, etc. in my time and I have NEVER experienced as poor of service as Bethesda and Laurel Pines Dental Group. It's been tough to wrap my head around and I've tried to give the benefit of the doubt over and over. The unfortunate thing is that they actually do quality work. The dentists are talented and skilled but the business itself is horribly run, horribly. The front office is consistently rude and irresponsible. I would have to call 6 to 10 times over the course of weeks to get answers to simple questions they claimed they'd call me back about (not one time in a whole year did I get a requested and confirmed call back). They had an issue with my insurance, I asked them to call when it was resolved they said absolutely. I call a month later they say oh yeah we resolved that 3 weeks ago... had to delay the process a month. They WILL NOT give you any information or clarity into what is being done unless you pull it out of them. Communication is extremely poor and I found myself having to ask tons of questions just to get basic understanding but they acted as if that was an inconvenience to them. As a result more and more expenses were dropped on me that WERE NOT expressed before. (Just one example, I go for my tooth crown and the suggested whitening is $700 extra ????? Guess how many times I was informed of this before the day of. Zero.) Extremely snaky and dishonest business, I've never had a dentist not go above and beyond to make sure the patient understands the process well ahead of time, especially with big and expensive procedures. The final reason you should avoid is they are criminally overpriced, like actually criminal. I was dragged into this place because I needed an emergency extraction next day for an infected root canal, and ONE YEAR LATER (because they can't schedule or communicate properly) I finally got a new tooth and I have paid over $6500 altogether OUT OF POCKET (insurance barely covers "cosmetic" operations). For one tooth. I'm 23 years old just out of college, I can't afford to drop near $7000 out of pocket, and there was no sympathy or workaround to this absolutely absurd pricing. This one office has literally set my life back significantly. If I could go back in time to go somewhere else I would without hesitation. The work they do is solid and the result is good, I can't complain ab that but the quality of people and the quality of service makes this place absolutely bottom tier and I'd give 0 stars if I could. It is apparent in retrospect of my short visit today that regardless of how loud the voice of pain gets... the voice of the $$$$ is much louder. I was definitely NOT HEARD today. To feel so small in such a small location! The Odds! Everyone can't afford to get the Best work done .. yet pain has no Classifications. So what do you do? I scuffled up an assumed estimated $1000 to cover one tooth removal ...so something could've gotten done today .. yet I was borderline challenged on every end to go for their "recommended" $4000 plan after discovery of another tooth with another issue! I even asked if they can just pull out one for relief!! I was told I wouldn't get relief from that pull. I really liked the dentist I saw. They were able to offer next day availability and majority of the staff was nice. The Doctor I saw was very knowledgeable and offered me several options for treatment. I didn't feel pressured to make a decision right away, which I appreciate. The things I didn't like about this office is they had a woman run around to all the stations getting our credit card information before doing certain services that weren't covered by health insurance. If they're so worried about people walking out and not paying, they should make them pay first or have enough information on the person just in case they leave. They were also very rude and loud to other customers that were confused about insurance. Insurance in America is already difficult to understand. Take the extra 5 min to explain what's covered or not covered to people that are confused and don't just get angry with them. That is the main reason why I will not be going back and why I rated the place 3 stars. read more

I was visiting from out of state and my crown popped off. I called for a saturday appt and explained - I just wanted them to "cement" the crown on temporarily until I could get back home to NC on Tuesday. I came and they took xrays. The dentist did not even look in my mouth and wanted to perform a $3500 root canal and crown on my tooth right then and there. I told him I was not comfortable having such extensive work done so far from home. He refused to just cement my crown on - the office manager told him it was all the work or nothing would be done to assist me. As I checked out I asked for a detailed receipt ( I had maxed out my insurance for the year) . After they ran my credit card to pay $391 they gave me the detailed receipt. I questioned one of the line items - they said that it was for the oral exam he performed. I had he never even looked in my mouth and did not perform said exam. I told them they had to refund the $71 for that portion. They made me wait 25 minutes before they would refund my money. I think they thought I would just give up and leave without the money. I would not - I was so pissed at having to pay nearly $400 for nothing, since I explained from the beginning all I wanted was for my crown to be recemented until I could get home to NC. I had read other reviews that said the same thing as mine, but there were good reviews also. I thought maybe they would assist me - NOPE THEY WOULD NOT HELP. read more

The day Dr. A'becket retired was the day that the practice no longer cared about the patient. Dr. Samad has raised his voice at me and spoken to me in an inappropriate manner for a dentist to be speaking to his client. He demands that you get a procedure, and if you decline, he berates you. I scheduled this appointment in desperation from unbearable tooth pain. Once I arrived, great customer service from the receptionist as well as dental assistant. What bothered me was the outright ability of these people to take advantage of individuals in pain! Was told by dentist I needed an additional X ray (not covered by my insurance of course), decided to purchase the 250$ Additional x ray because I was told that would allow him to treat me. I get the X ray and I'm told a long list of things my initial doctor never mentioned! Keep in mind this was an emergency appointment because the pain became intolerable to wait for my initial doctors scheduled time. Then the dentist goes to give me expensive options on just fully removing my tooth totaling almost 3000$. No problem , asked if he was able to prescribe me anything for the pain or even antibiotics considering he swore it was such a bad bacteria build up . He told me no , he could not that " this is not a pharmacy." Ended up leaving empty handed , mouth still in pain and 250$ short. Go at your own risk ! AVOID AT ALL COSTS! I saw Dr. Shawn Samad at my last visit. Full x-rays were taken, including bitewings. I have experience working in the dental field and am aware that I am very prone to getting cavities, and I made sure to let the hygenist and Dr. Samad know this. The hygenist was very nice, but my visit seemed very rushed, and Dr. Samad only came into the room for less than a minute, asked me to smile (did not even put on gloves or look in my mouth), and said everything looked perfect. When I asked him if he had a chance to look at my x-rays and that I was concerned about a particular tooth, he just brushed me off saying he has done this for many years and said he had looked at the xrays in a different room. I did not like his lack of even bothering to do a proper exam, even though this is what he billed for, so I immediately asked for my dental records and xrays and transferred to another practice. Fast forward about half a year to my next check-up at my new dentist, and upon conducting a proper dental exam including xrays (I had switched insurances so xrays were covered again), they discover 4 cavities, 3 of which were also visible in the x-rays taken at my last visit with Dr. Samad. I had these fixed, but the decay had gotten very deep I almost needed 3 root canals, and may lose a front tooth and require an implant. If these had been fixed 6 months ago when they should have been easily detected by Dr. Samad, I would not be in this situation. I am currently considering pursuing legal action against Dr. Samad. read more

I had about 5-6 visits to Laurel Pines Dental Group between January-February 2021, which started with a painful dental issue. I have Delta Dental insurance for active duty officers, which pays 100% of the contracted rate for almost anything. In 12 years, I have never paid a cent for dental care with this insurance. At every visit, the office staff insisted that I had a balance to pay. In total, I paid $1,413 to Laurel Pines Dental Group between January and February 2021. Months later, I noticed that Laurel Pines Dental Group did not file my insurance claim and inquired about the same with their office around May 2021. Laurel Pines Dental Group e-mailed back and claimed that they did in fact file the insurance claim -- which was not the case after calling Delta Dental. Consequently, I had to file a complaint with the Maryland Attorney General's Office to get Laurel Pines Dental Group to file my insurance claim and refund the overcharges. Furthermore, Laurel Pines Dental Group billed for services not rendered. On four separate dates, Laurel Pines Dental Group submitted a billing code for medications dispensed to me for home use at $55 per incident for a total of $220.00. This billing code is a non-covered dental expense. Consequently, I would have to pay out of pocket. So far, I have recovered $1,193 and waiting on the $220 balance as of 8/24/2021. The Maryland Attorney General's Office has been excellent and has advocated for me. I would highly recommend filing a complaint with the Maryland Attorney General's Office Division of Health Education and Advocacy Unit (HEAU) if others have similar billing issues and having difficulty getting their money returned. Honestly, if it wasn't for the Maryland Attorney General's Office, I do not believe that I would have received any money back. The HEAU division spent a lot of time reviewing my billing issues and interacted directly with Laurel Pines Dental Group in obtaining a refund of the overcharges. The good: The front office staff are really helpful and professional; scheduling through them and talking with them was always pleasant. If you need work done with little notice they can probably schedule you in within a few days of the request. In part because... The not-so-good: They have a random rotation of "dentists of the days". I went in 10 or so times over the last two years and never saw the same dentist twice, with the exception of the occasional discussion and pitch from the owner, Dr. Samad. If you expect to get to know your dentist and build a rapport, this is not the place. It often feels like an assembly line of patients, and some dentists are openly annoyed if they get stuck with certain procedures or issues to deal with. The business model is all about quantity with little care for the building of quality care for the individual patient. The bad: Less than 6 weeks ago I had a procedure done involving two cantilever bridges and an implant. In total it was $8000 after insurance. It was performed by, let's call them, Dentist A. I'll skip over the comedy of errors, where Dentist A soaked me with water, hit the roof of mouth with an instrument while trying an extraction, and had a dental drill bit lose causing it to bounce off my tooth and fly across the room. At the time I causally shrugged it off as just a bad day and I wanted to be a good sport. The fitting the next day was done by Dentist B. I had to return the same day since the bite was way off and caused heaving impacting on the bridges. Dentist B didn't do much correction and convinced me that I may need to relearn my bite in that area. I went back in a few days later and saw Dentist C, since the gum-line above the area was noticeably more torn and the jawbone was exposed. By this time the bite felt better, but at the expense of slight movement/looseness of the bridge over the implant! I mentioned the movement, he tested it, saw I had the official follow up appointment a week later and sent me on my way saying he wasn't concerned. Came in for the official follow up and met Dentist D. He was openly annoyed and frustrated that it hadn't healed and he felt the movement in the bridge as well. He told me to rinse with salt water and that I didn't need to bother with scheduling another follow up. Fast forward a couple weeks to today, and the bridge over the implant freely moves. I finally demanded to see Dr. Samad and he informs me the entire implant failed, and that any movement would have been a sign (i.e. Dentist C and D dropped the ball through either laziness of being stuck in rotation on the day I came in, or through incompetence... not sure which one is worse). Now they want to charge me $8000 dollars to remove all the work that I just paid $8000 for! Additionally they want another $5000 to try a different bridge for that area. The cherry on top is that Dr. Samad finds a way to blame the patient through a legally callous tone, probably trying to avoid all blame or anything they they may be accountable for. If he owned up to it and honestly tried to work with me to correct the issue then I'd be a good sport again. It's not to be. I'm going to request my dental records and never set foot in there again, if I really do need to pay $12000 (as they suggest) to correct the issues their procedures resulted in, then the money won't go to them. read more

I would not recommend this practice to anyone. I went in for an emergency on the weekend and was charged for three x-rays, when I only needed one. I came out still in pain because I didn't want the procedure done there. They were going to charge me for everything individually. When I saw another dentist. I was told it all should have been in one cost.I was not offered any antibiotics or pain medication. So I walked out still in pain and out of $438.00 .If I would have had the procedure done,I would have let out paying of the place,paying $5,198.00 .I went to another dentist and only paid half of that amount. To end it all I still don't have my $250.00 x-ray,that I was promised that Monday following my appointment. read more

This dental practice should be shut down by the state of Maryland. I went to get a tooth extracted, Dr. Vranis was my dentist. During the extraction of my tooth, she hit my front tooth crown with the instrument and broke my front crown..this dental office refused to replace the crown..I WOULD NEVER, EVER FREQUENT THIS DENTIST.. DISHONESTY IS NOT GOOD BUSINESS PRACTICE. read more

They are a rip off. I had a dental emergency and they basically charged me over 6k for a root canal and crown on one tooth and a wisdom tooth extraction. They were attentive but the cost of being there in the weekend is crazy. they charge $150 fee just because it the weekend service. And they could not prescribe me anything for the pain. I'd rather get a pair of pliers and take it off myself than spend 6k in my opinion. read more
