Found this bed and breakfast online and were pleasantly surprised at how good it was. When I picture a bed-and-breakfast in my mind it's always this kind of place. A stately, large old home with lots of interesting history. The mountain laurel inn featured several large suites and some other bedrooms with private baths. The public areas are large and welcoming. The website has wonderful pictures of cottages and looks super inviting. I'm sure the hosts are great, but their reservation system sucks. Their website does not contain an online reservation form--only a standard contact us form and phone number. So not trusting online forms, I called to make my reservation. I spoke a very lovely woman for nearly 30 minutes who took down my name, phone number and email (which she had from the voice message I'd previously left) told me all about the property and about the town, helped me select a rooms for our group, and even promised to send me more information about the property and the town via email later on. She explained that the rooms were reserved for us and was looking forward to welcoming us "all the way from Chicago" in September. That was in January. Now, it's September and there's absolutely no record of our reservation. Lost. Gone. Ghosted. Apparently, phoned-in reservations don't count because when I inquired about our lost reservation citing this 30 minute phone call we had back in January, she responded with the following: "We get so many phone inquiries that we use the online contact form as a back up so we do not overbook. When those aren't filled out we assume that they have found another place or that their plans have changed. After the form is filled out we send a confirmation and we try to touch base closer to time. I am so sorry that we do not have your reservation." Uh. Wait, what? I was suppose to go back online and fill out a form AFTER I talked to a human to make my reservation? Oh, boy...

We decided to check out Paul's place because it was fairly close and he was so friendly on the phone when I called for more specific info. It's definitely a laid back and rustic environment but I was all in. Paul takes care of his customers and he was very adamant in teaching us the rules of the river before letting us launch. I had $60 in cash and he would only take $40 even thought the price was listed as $50. It's a great deal for you to kayak, paddle board and tube on the gorgeous river. We had it basically to ourselves that day and it was a revelation. The only thing I'd say is there needs to be upgrades to the life jackets. Most of them were child sized. However, all of the other equipment was well maintained. Please go and support this business!

We managed to snag the top loft around the Holiday season. To top it off, this place is pet-friendly, no questions asked and no pet deposit. This is an incredible perk for families traveling with their fur babies. Because they recognized that pets are family too, we took extra care to clean up after our pets on the property when they did their business outdoors. Not sure if they care about dog poop on the land, but may we suggest a small station for doggie poop bags? Also something to consider, we frequently saw loose dogs from the surrounding area running on the property and road, so we recommend being aware of this if your pet doesn't do well around loose dogs. Our cabin was approximately 600 square feet, had a gas fireplace (awesome!!!!!!), and we were right on the edge of the Watauga River. The land surrounding the cabin is lovely and the sound of the rushing river water is absolutely refreshing. The cabin comes with everything you would need for your stay: extra towels and bedding, extra spices, condiments, and coffee, a nice laundry facility on the ground floor, firewood for the camp fire outside, and an awesome grill and outdoor facility with plenty of seating on the river's edge. Our dogs loved romping in the lake. The only thing that the cabin didn't have was shampoo/conditioner, but there was plenty of soap in the bathroom and kitchen. The water heater worked great, so there was no issue with hot showers or hot water in the kitchen sink. Once you get the fireplace roaring, it's wonderful being able to settle in with a hot mug of coffee, free fast wifi, and satellite TV. Everything during our stay was perfect. We would definitely book this cabin again in the future for the holidays.

I'm always weary of staying in rentals because I'm super picky with cleanliness, but Bee Cliff Cabins are spotless. The cabins are located in a remote location away from the city noise and are equipped with anything you may need for your stay. The kitchen has mugs, plates, pans, paper towels, napkins and utensils. The rooms are spacious and are kept clean and clutter free. The bathroom is stocked with plenty of towels for your stay. There was a TV in our living room with comfortable couches and a lazy boy which was probably my husband favorite thing from the trip ;). Our cabin had a deck with chairs, which my husband and I used in the mornings to enjoy our coffee. This was my first time staying at Bee Cliff Cabins but my husband and oldest son had stayed there before. We will definitely be staying here again. I cannot say enough wonderful things about it!
