About four or five months before the wedding; the bride, groom, and both mothers met for a tasting so that we could choose the menu for the day. We were given a few appetizers, and a few entrées to sample family style. Everything was very good, and we narrowed it down to 3 main dinner options. One of the things we really liked about this venue is that they have a bridal suite upstairs where the bridal party and both mothers could get ready. It was a nice space with lots of room for hair, makeup, and changing. There was a small patio overlooking the parking where we could watch as guests arrived. There was a parlor downstairs with a pool table and flatscreen TVs where the groom, groomsmen, and dads could hang out and relax before the ceremony. The clubhouse itself is full of southern charm with its majestic white columned exterior and red tile roof. The back view is just as attractive as the front with its well manicured lawn that over looks a lake and several fancy estate homes. There is also a wide patio that overlooks the back lawn which was perfect for our cocktail reception and then later became a cigar bar. Inside is very spacious. There is a foyer with a spiral staircase where we displayed photographs and served champagne while the guests were starting to arrive. We had about 150 guests and there was plenty of room for tables, 2 bars, and a spacious dance floor in the ballroom. TPC Sugarloaf really lends itself to weddings because of its size and its beauty; inside and out. There are so many great spots for wedding photos. It is a great option if you are looking for an elegant setting and Amelia and her staff are ready to assist with every detail.

You have to park at the gas south concentration center and then you get on buses and are bused in. It's $15.00 a day. No one can enter the neighborhood till after 10am. Thats when the first bus leaves. We have not waited to leave or go head back any of the days busses have been available. We have walked the course each day. There are restrooms and concession stands throughout. The course is very elite and high end homes throughout.

I played in the 17th Annual Georgia Tech Letterwinners Club Golf Tournament at Olde Atlanta Golf Club. Despite the name, Olde Atlanta is actually quite the hike from Atlanta. It's in Suwanee, a suburb northeast of town. It took me a solid 45-50 minutes to drive to Olde Atlanta from my home in Midtown Atlanta. The drive home took about an hour in rush hour traffic. Olde Atlanta is a private club, part of the large ClubCorp network of clubs. I enjoyed my time at this club, though nothing about my experience made it stand out from other similar-tier clubs in terms of golf course design and conditions, clubhouse and amenities, and service. Everything was fine and good. I could have gone either way on the star rating, either three stars ("A-OK") or four ("Yay! I'm a fan"). I wouldn't go out of my way to play here again, but I wouldn't turn down the opportunity if I couldn't help it either. Under ClubCorp, Olde Atlanta is a package deal with Windermere Golf Club in Cumming. The two clubs are about six miles apart (about a 12-minute drive in light traffic). I've always thought these "two for one" club deals were interesting. It's like how ClubCorp packaged Bentwater (Acworth) and Eagle Watch (Woodstock) together. I guess it's a way to market and sell more memberships. These four clubs were once Canongate properties and were acquired by ClubCorp in 2014 as part of a $265 million acquisition (http://bit.ly/2kMAtyD). Twenty foursomes (80 golfers) showed up to play for a 10am shotgun start. For $150 per golfer, paid to the Georgia Tech Letterwinners Club, we got breakfast and lunch in the clubhouse, a golf shirt, and a round on Olde Atlanta. Not a bad deal. Including administrative and ancillary Tech people, I thought the club handled the entire event well overall. However, there were some issues with food and beverage. During breakfast, they were slow to (or didn't) refill the orange juice pitcher. During the round, we didn't see a beverage cart until we were *13* holes (over three hours) into our round. For a large outing like this, they should have planned the beverage cart better. I thought that was disappointing. During lunch, they ran out of BBQ chicken and pork. The poor chef was working his butt off to get us more food as quickly as possible. I think they possibly could have planned better there too. At 80 participants, we fully utilized the clubhouse's bar, grill, and dining room. Every seat was taken. The clubhouse and parking lot aren't huge, but they're adequate. As a whole, I thought Olde Atlanta was quite comparable to Laurel Springs, another ClubCorp property in Suwanee. Not high end, but generally better than a public course. That said, I would probably choose to play at a nicer mid-tier public course like Echelon or Lanier Islands Legacy before choosing to play here. I think even affordably-priced daily fee courses like Cherokee Run and The Frog are more fun and interesting to play than Olde Atlanta. The bar and grill looks like it's been renovated relatively recently. It's modern and up-to-date with decent furnishings and lots of TVs. There's a patio with several umbrella-covered tables, gorgeous landscaping, and a nice view of the practice facilities and 9th hole. There are six tennis courts and a pool nearby, but I think access to and operation of those facilities are separate from the golf club. The staff was nice, from the pro shop staff to the ladies at the bar. The practice facilities consist of two practice putting greens (the larger one with some good contouring), a practice bunker and chipping green with movable pins (also good contouring), and a driving range with about 12 mats and grass hitting stations. The practice facilities were in good shape though the bunker could have used more sand. It was hard to dig my feet in and really get under the ball as the practice sand lies were quite thin. I kept hitting the hard ground underneath the sand on my practice shots. The golf carts are nice E-Z-GO ELiTE RXV electric carts. They run on lithium batteries and have "IntelliBrake" technology. In other words, the parking brake doesn't "click" into place. It automatically engages for you. Our cart rode quiet and smooth. It also had a slick GPS display unconventionally mounted to the driver side of the cart. The center console had two USB ports for device charging. Two black towels were provided. No tees nor ice in the cooler were provided. Like the practice facilities, the course was in good condition, from tee to green. The course opened in 1993. The fairways are Bermudagrass and the greens are bentgrass. The course is short at only 6,605 yards (73.0/140) from the tips. A par 71, it is moderately challenging. It's hilly and not super memorable. My favorite holes were 8 (almost won Closest to Pin), 5 and 18 (scenic water holes). Restrooms are located on 5 and 15.

According to the Official Rules of Retirement, I'm required to take up golf. I'm only semi-retired…read more(whatever that means) but I've been trying to learn the game for the past year or so, with limited success. Despite a fairly decent knowledge of the mechanics and techniques of tennis, I hadn't been able to figure out why my golf swing wasn't producing desired results. So, lessons. After poking around the internet for options, I decided to go with Lawrence Sykkmon, mainly because he's affiliated with the Northcrest Driving range, where I like to practice. His website suggested he'd be a good fit for me as he emphasizes concepts like 'internal mechanics' instead of mechanical swing corrections, and swinging from your core. Lawrence is very easy to learn from - he explains things in a way I understand and can translate to my own swing. How much this will then translate to improved performance on the course is still to be determined. But after only two lessons, I've found I can hit my 3-wood a lot better on the range than I could before. For me, that's the club that has the biggest influence on whether I have a good round or not. And the key indicator that his lessons are translatable to performance is that I now have a better sense of what I did wrong when a swing doesn't produce a nice straight shot. That was lacking before. I have more lessons ahead, and I look forward to them. Reasonable prices and flexible schedule. In terms of sports instruction, this is the best I've experienced. Highly recommended.
