As first time parents, we had no idea what we were doing going into the pregnancy, but we knew that we wanted to TRY to have a natural birth. We had friends who advised us to find a doula if that was our intent. So we connected with Lauren & was so glad to have brought her onto our birth plan! My pregnancy was relatively smooth for the most part, but Lauren was a great resource for questions and advice when Google became overwhelming. Towards the end of my pregnancy, my OB wanted to schedule an induction, and I agreed to it, but I hated doing it. I reached out to Lauren for advice, and without inserting her own opinions, she just empowered me to stand up for myself and what I wanted our birth story to be. So I canceled the induction and let nature take it's course. As a shy and submissive person my whole life, I don't think I would have been able to go against my OB's wishes if I didn't have Lauren's support and encouragement. And I was super proud of myself and grateful for her for that. The rest of our birth story went the exact opposite of what we hoped. I had to get an unplanned C-section (unrelated to why the OB wanted to induce me), and the hospital staff wouldn't let Lauren come into the triage room or the recovery room until we begged them (and even then, it was only for a short time each time). But when we were able to have her there, she just provided so much assurance that we were doing the best we could, and appeased so much of my guilt and shame that came out of our birth story. So even though we didn't get the natural birth we wanted, and Lauren couldn't physically be with us because of "hospital policy," I don't think we would have changed anything even if we could. Lauren was amazing in supporting me through pregnancy, delivery and postpartum. I had decided later into my third pregnancy that I wanted an unmedicated birth after being induced with my two older children. I began to do some research about the birthing process and what a doula is and realized I wanted additional support. Lauren came highly recommended by another doula I know who is not taking clients at the moment. She and I met and I hired her at 36 weeks pregnant. She gave me all kinds of great information and I realized I didn't really experience the full labor process having been induced too early before. Lauren checked in regularly with me and my husband, making sure to involve him as we got closer to my due date. When I was in active labor days 3 days after my due date, she met us at the hospital, encouraged me, and helped me position as the contractions grew stronger to the point where I did want the epidural. Luckily our daughter was born soon after and I didn't need any pain medication. I felt having Lauren there helped me achieve my natural birth plan as she advocated for me while partnering with my husband and the nurse. After, we talked about my daughter's birth which helped me process what had happened; it was really a redeeming and empowering experience considering my first and second were not very good.
