I recently joined a ukelele club and am a total beginner. I have been using a loaner owned by the club but I've decided to commit to learning this instrument and went in looking to make a purchase. No one approached me as I sorted through their pretty good selection looking for one with a tone I liked. But when I was ready to talk business, they were ready to help. Helped me put together a package with a gig bag, tuner, capo, etc. Wasn't cheap, but I am happy with my purchase. A fun shop with people jamming together at the front of the store. If you're in the market for a new guitar, Lavonnes is the place to go. One thing I really appreciate is how they have a great range of instruments, from cheaper beginner guitars to more expensive professional ones. That is not to say, however, that anything is too expensive. All of their prices are very fair and competitive. The staff there is very friendly and helpful. It's nice how you can walk in there and play an instrument without feeling pressured to buy anything- there are no pushy salesmen. They seem to have struck the perfect balance between too little and too much help. Everyone working at Lavonnes is very knowledgable, which also makes Lavonnes a great place to take lessons. I have been to many, many guitar stores- and I can comfortably say that Lavonnes is my hands down favorite place to go for guitars, basses, amps, and the like. read more

This is by far the best music store in the Metro Area. I was in the market for what my dad calls a "life guitar," the kind of guitar you'll hang on to for your life and pass on to your kids. I knew I wanted a Gibson, since I love their acoustics. I found Lavonne through Gibson's authorized dealer list, and called to see if they had the model I wanted (J-50). The guy I spoke with was very friendly, and said that they didn't, but they had one coming in on their next shipment. I told him I really wanted to have a look, and he said they'd call me when it came in. I went down to the shop that day to check it out, and was really impressed with the variety of instruments they had there. They mainly had guitars and basses, although I did notice a Fender Rhodes piano, a couple of drum kits stacked up, and a few mixing boards. But guitars is their main thing. I met and schmoozed with owner Pete Wagener, who named the store after his mother, and Pete is a great guy. Very friendly, very knowledgeable. Long story short, I went in the day they got in the guitar I wanted, and walked out with it that day. It's worth mentioning that, since it was a different set of employees that day from when I called in, they didn't realize that I was the guy who had called earlier to express interest in the guitar, so they asked me to wait while they called Pete to ensure that they weren't selling something that had already been spoken for. I appreciated the care they took. I've gone back several times to buy other things like harmonicas and capos. Sure, I could get the same thing at Guitar Center, but I'd rather spend my money at a local shop that really values my business and wants me to have the best experience. One thing I should mention is the staff. I already said what a cool guy Pete is, but the rest of the staff is standout as well. There's a guy working there named Michael, and he's an amazing fingerstyle guitar player. When I went in to get my J-50, he played a few things for me. He had a tracheotomy and can't talk, and unfortunately I'm a really bad lip-reader. But he's really patient and keeps a note pad with him, so we were able to have a nice conversation. This place is definitely worth your time and money. Go to Guitar Center to try stuff out, but then go to Lavonne Wagener Music to spend your money. They deserve it. read more

I'm just going to echo what everybody else is saying about this place. Hands down the best guitar/music shop in the Twin Cities! They specialize in guitars, basses and amps, but they also carry drums, the occasional keyboard, some pro audio and home recording gear as well. The staff treats you like family and every visit has some great conversation with it. Pete is exceptionally knowledgeable and always has great stories to share. Rachel is just like Pete, except shorter... and no beard. She's got a great sense of humor and if you don't know how to tie nylon strings on to a bridge, she's the expert! Poncho, all around great guy and terrific set up/repair tech. Really knows his stuff. Everybody there is really good at their jobs. I've been dealing with them close to 20 years now. Long enough to remember "Grandpa Charlie" as my daughter knew him, always sitting at the counter with a smile ready to help and make you feel at home. I've introduced many friends to this place over the years and even recommended them to people that know nothing about music gear, but want to get a present for someone. So about a year or so ago i met a buddy here, and got to know the owner a bit; and have been there several times since. Here is my take based on prob a dozen visits, couple of purchases and having some work done to a few guitars. Just one guys opinion here... 1. Work on guitars, very reasonable, nice work, fast! 2. People here have REAL passion about guitars... you open the case and a crowd forms around you... fun. 3. Pete the owner... great guy who goes out of his way for his customers. He is the opposite of the 'shark' businessman. Down to earth, knows his stuff, cares as much about someone being happy with their purchase. 4. He knows his guitars and amps... i bought a princeton reissue (nothing special right) that had been owned and tweaked by the owner of Savage amps... sounded incredible... we did a side by side with a stock Fender Pr... and night and day. Put it this way... if he tells you it is a good guitar, or good amp... it is. 5. Best sounding/feeling strat i ever have played was from LaVonnes 6. You will see a lot of the same faces on a weekend... think this is a bit of a hangout, eclectic mix of young/old customers. Downside... the vintage stuff behind the counter (vintage) turns pretty regularly, but the 'main wall' remains somewhat static, so i don't go there every weekend to geek out. Also being in Savage, a little out of the way for some. read more

Absolutely the best personalized service I have received. Prices are very competitive. I was in the market for a guitar had it narrowed down to two. I stopped here after shopping Guitar Center. Hands down you cannot beat Lavonne for helping you select. Pete was awesome and PATIENT. He offered a wealth of information. I wound up with an American Standard Telecaster. One I was not even considering. Their prices are the same as GC with the added value of wonderful service and attention. They set up the guitar for you before you leave so it is perfect for you. You are not just getting it out of the box. BTW. They also do instrument repairs and service. I brought my 1952 Gibson ES 150 they went over it and It's the best it has ever sound. read more

Huge fan. The staff really know their stuff and are very comfortable with beginners and pros. They spent extra time with me finding the best sounding guitar for me - even though it was a less expensive model. Good selection of gear and accessories as well - reasonably priced. I had my guitar set up there and I told them where the fret buzz was. I got it back and it's as if they just put some new strings on it and gave it back. They didn't do anything to the guitar. I won't be going back. I'll just do it myself. read more

I have bought merchandise from LaVonne Music in the past and always had a good experience. Last week I bought a vintage guitar from them and the interaction was exceptional! The entire staff answered every question I had over a period of 2 weeks while deciding if I needed another guitar.
