I have been trying for over a week to get someone to talk to me about some labs/questions I've been inquiring about, AND NO ONE CALLS YOU BACK.... I have been calling this office every hour to only get voicemails.... good thing nothing terrible is happening or real care is needed, because I'd probably be dead by now. Terrible. Took our daughter in as I was concerned for a UTI. Was told to take her sample to LMH so the on call would get the results before Monday and no one ever called. Now we are paying more for a UA at the hospital and had I known we would be waiting for results until Monday I would have just waited. Can't get a hold of Dr. Kalb who is supposed to be on call. I called in July to make an appointment. Office staff couldn't be bothered to return phone calls. That should have been my first red flag. Finally was able to book an appointment for three months out. I filled out the paperwork online. When I showed up to my appointment, I was greeted by a man who was less than cordial. They canceled my appointment and didn't bother calling to confirm the appointment even though I filled out the new patient paperwork. Just to be told that the doctor has something else to do and decided they didn't have time for me even though I showed up at my appointment time. I would not recommend this office at all. read more

I really used to love it here. Unfortunately they are inconsistent with medication refills resulting in some negative side effects. They have refused to refill some of my meds that are for a lifelong illness and have been inconsistent with my husbands mental health medication which is quite dangerous. It seems they are holding it over out heads to make an appointment, but we are doing fine with CONSISTENT access to our prescriptions. It's also not the time to make unnecessarily appointments... Ultimately, it's okay if your in a pinch. But don't expect speedy responses or general accessibility. I know covid is making things a bit bumpy, but the least they can do is make sure we have our time sensitive medication without having to tell them face to face that nothing has changed. read more

Well, coming from a man who hates doctors with a royal passion, this place has their stuff together. With a family practice, ob/gyn, dermatologist and cosmetics, AND their own pharmacy on site Lawrence Family Practice has everything a sick person would ever need. They've got the checking-in routine down pat. Fill out paperwork once, never fill it out again. Both times I've had to go in due to illness, I've never had to wait more that 10 minutes in the waiting room. I've had two different doctors now, both of which were professional, patient, and had a wonderful bedside manner. No rushing rudeness here like alot of other doctors. The building appears to be under 3 years old, with a warmer, friendlier interior than most medical offices. Also notably absent is that horrible sanitizer/medical scrub smell so common to other offices. Little things like kleenex, hand sanitizer, and ample seating go a long way towards patient comfort. No muzak and a separate children's play area do nothing but further the great experience. Nothing is worse than having to sit elbow-to-elbow with an energetic 3 year old while you feel like complete crap. If you're new to Lawrence and hunting for a doctor, I'd definitely recommend you check out Lawrence Family Practice Center. read more

This place deserves major props. My wife is pregnant and we are going to doctor here who is an OB and a family practitioner. So we are seeing the doctor who will see the baby grow. The people here have been nothing but friendly. They have done everything they can to make sure that my wife's pregnancy goes well. The waiting area is nice. The attention and advice I've received during my tenure at LFPC has been truly exceptional. Dr. McKeon is my primary caregiver but I have also been seen by Dr. Carla Phipps, Heather Yates, and Dr. Johanning. The nursing staff is fantastic and I find it incredibly convenient to have lab, X-ray, and a Pharmacy all on site. LFPC provides the full package. I feel like I have my own personal team of medical professionals collaborating with me on my wellness. In my opinion, Dr. McKeon's most impressive characteristic is her keen knowledge of the latest research. She references medical journal articles to inform me of the latest treatment options when we are crafting my wellness plan. She is thorough in her assessment, respectful in her interactions, and she is an excellent listener. You can't go wrong with LFPC. read more

I am relatively new in town, and was looking for a good pediatrician for my infant son. Lawrence Family Practice Center was recommended to me by a friend. I've been twice now - once for a minor issue my son had, and once for my son's well-baby visit and immunizations. I could not be happier with this place! The staff is incredibly helpful, the nurses are amazing, and the one doctor I've seen briefly was very nice and helpful. At my son's well-baby appointment, I had a concern about an issue for myself, and the nurse examining my son took a look at it an immediately got the doctor to confirm that I needed to have it taken care of right away. Even though I wasn't the one in for the appointment, they got me checked in quickly, going so far as holding my little boy while I filled out paperwork. I really, really loves my health care provider in California - Lawrence Family Practice Center is right up there with them, so I am extremely happy my friend recommended them! read more

I've been going here for about 7 years now and I've never seen another doctor in Lawrence. The only negative thing about this place is that the ladies that work the check-in desk are terrible. They are so unfriendly and just downright rude. If my doctor wasn't awesome, I would not return here. I like Heather Yates who is a Nurse Practitioner under Dr. McKeon. I've seen Dr. McKeon as well, but prefer Heather. She always takes the time to answer all my questions and I never feel rushed with her. Terrible first (and only) experience at the Lawrence Family Practice Center last year (2013). As a KU employee, I needed to get an annual physical and biometric screening in order to qualify for a discount on my health insurance. I told no less than 5 different employees that was what I needed- the receptionist when I made the appointment, the receptionist when I checked in, wrote it down on a checkout sheet, told the nurse who took me back to the room, Dr. Miranda Fowler herself, and then the lab technician who took my blood. Do you think that they did my biometric screening, the whole reason I made the appointment, took time off of work, and drove all the way across town? No, they did not. Ridiculous. Wasn't going back to give more blood, ended up going back to my old Dr. I waited forever, and Dr. Fowler's bedside manner was cold and brusk, and really not very friendly at all. I think she was only in my room for 5 to 10 minutes, and this was supposed to be a complete annual physical. She didn't ask any of the questions that I normally get asked by doctors. I had read that she was in the military before, and I definitely felt that vibe. None of the staff seemed particularly friendly or happy to be there. I also wanted to renew one of my regular prescriptions. They sent in the bloodwork for that, but only made the prescription for 30 days, non-renewable. I kept having to call back every month to have them send in another script, and they just kept sending in another 30 day prescription until my pharmacy complained and told me to call them and ask them to extend it. I made countless phone calls regarding just this one prescription. I truly cannot believe what a pain it became to deal with a simple prescription when it never was before with my old Dr's office. It's been a while since this happened, and I am rarely moved to write reviews, but I was thinking about my experience there again today and how everything about my visit was atrocious. I thought that going to the big fancy Dr's office across town, I would get better care and service. WRONG. I used to see Heather Yates here and had such an excellent experience. I moved away for a few years, moved back, and was sad to see she'd moved on to a new position, but assumed I could just find another doctor or practitioner in the same clinic. My husband had a horrible experience just going in for a check up and found the staff to be really unhelpful. I recently took a trip to Colorado and had an issue with asthma for the first time in years - since I never have issues, and my asthma is generally mild, I don't carry an inhaler. I called them when I realized I was having troubles breathing, explained that I had just moved back and that I needed an emergency inhaler before I went hiking. They didn't even bother to return my call, at any point, ever. I can't believe how unprofessional this office has gotten and I am so disappointed to have to find a new practice. read more

Stay away from this place. They have no regard for the actual care of their patients. They will not refill your prescriptions unless you come in and pay $300 for a "check up". Find anywhere else! After my girlfriend showed for her appointment, she was promptly told that because of her symptoms a Dr. would see her outside She tested negative for COVID in the past 48 hours but she understood and waited. Then she was told that the Dr. would NOT come out but video call instead. We waited. After some time, we drove home. An hour later she spoke with the physician. She again explained her cold symptoms and that she was trying to avoid an ear infection which have been common and severe for her. Antibiotics always remedy this but the doctor suggested steroids instead and said that she needed to come back to the office so the doctor would check her ears outside. Why not while we were sitting there? So, again we drove to the office. After checking her ears only and not even her fever, she stated that there was concern but didn't see an infection yet. Again, my girlfriend explained the common infections but the physician said she'd have to make another appointment if she got a bad infection. She had not been on antibiotics in a year. Doctor refused antibiotics again and apologized for her poor office communication. This is NOT THE FIRST TIME this office has been more focused on repeat business, referrals and getting you out than their patients immediate health. The doctor was certainly kind but had a complete disregard for the patient's history. Listening should be just as important as your physician's one time visit and limited diagnosis. So, me and my partner have gone here for about a year and a half... my partner liked Dr Phipps (the husband) so much that she talked me into moving from First Med to LFPC. She had a horrible infection in her ear for months that Phipps refused to send her to an ENT until she was smoke free and took some form of an antibiotic for at least 6 months!!! WTH?????? I finally convinced her to go to the ER (she had quite the history with this ear, at least a year before she went to Phipps, and we were going on year #2!) They gave her a referral to an ENT and come to find out the infection had been mistreated for soooooo long that it actually turned into MRSA at some point during the infection period! I am livid that a Dr would refuse a referral if a patient requests a specialist, period! I then went in for a reaccuring sinus infection that I pretty much get every year no matter what! Heather Yates PA is who I prefer to see there cuz I love her and I think she's a great PA. Anywho... she was not in the office New Years Eve, not surprisingly, so I saw the only person who was there M. Slaugh APN (nurse practitioner) I gave her all my information & symptoms and including my medical history (I have sever rheumatoid arthritis and am on major medications) we told her that I usually need to Z-packs to take back to back to get rid of this... she proceeded to argue with me that that medication is overly prescribed and that she was going to give me a script for a very good med but not the "best" med so in case the very good med didn't work, we had an antibiotic to fall back on.... I can't make this shit up people! So we left, waited till the next day to go pick up the script when the pharmacist who knows I'm on RA meds proceeded to tell me people with my illness have a tendency to get "ruptured tendons" & "ruptured joints" who have RA????? WTF?! seriously.... WHY would you prescribe this med to a patient who clearly told you and you can read in my chart that i have RA?! Also... she questioned my allergy to penicillin, as if I was lying to get out of taking it.... UMMMMM hello! I have anaflicatic Shock from penicillin!!!!! So onward with my experience..... took my last pill out of my Z-pack... called the practice to get a 2nd Z-pack.... at 12 noon today and i STILL have not received a phone call back and its almost 9 pm!!! I will call back and try to talk to Heather Yates and see of she will just take over this situation since she is my preferred.... I don't feel like I should have to pay TWO copays for the exact same illness within a weeks time to get better or to properly get treated! If yates doesn't take this situation over, this practice will be losing another patient! My partner has already moved to another facility BTW! It's just bad business for a locally owned practice to treat their paying patients that way! I'm not a drug seeker ( if I was i certainly would not be seeking antibiotics) and I'm NOT a welfare patient on state medical bleeding the system ( not that I have a problem with anyone who qualifies for state medicaid) I have a private insurance that i pay for every month and I pay my copayments etc!!!!! Dr. Brad Phipps will really go an extra mile to ensure his patients receive the best care. I have seen every provider in this practice, including some that are no longer here. He and Heather really stand out. However, the billing is horrendous. It's often inaccurate if you have labs done. I didn't know it's possible to screw up billing for a Pap smear (those are always supposed to be covered by insurance. Period. #ThanksObama ), and even when the bill itself is accurate, their process is atrocious. Like, let's not tell the patient for a year (I had at least 15 and up to 20 visits in that time) , then start sending letters threatening dropping them as a patient, collections, etc. Why not just tell me I have a bill, let me pay it, and be done? Many of the appointment - making reception staff are not helpful. The front desk reception staff are great. Unfortunately, I won't go out of my way to keep coming here, despite having two excellent providers. The administration deters me. read more

Having worked in the medical provider industry for over ten years, this practice is a joke. I relocated to Lawrence and chose this practice since it was the largest and seemed the most diverse. Where to start? Seriously, where to start... Checked into front desk with all paperwork but info taken was incorrect by the time I got to see the PA. Mispelled last name and completely different birthdate. I was very thorough on my paperwork to include severe family hx of heart issues and my need for cholesterol meds... Verbalized it as well... PA responded that lab was needed. Okay, not a problem, proof is needed.. Understood. Offered them to contact my previous doctor for med rec. nope! Labs came back, nurse called me... Told me things looked normal but to lab again in 6-8 weeks. Asked about cholesterol... She said she'd talk to doctor and call back. No response. Called office back in three weeks and left msg. PA called me and told me to take birth control pills ???? Told her that I had a hysterectomy, her response was she forgot...??? Why not look at my chart before calling? Who the H knows. Still didn't address my questions. There are several other items that were a complete disaster about my care but don't really want to put on yelp. Just routine stuff at middle age but still. If try can't get a handle on the simple life routine items what are they worth? Outside of care... The staff is all incredibly rude, as if they were doing me a favor by doing the routine physical. Other oddity, this is a FAMILY practice however of the 10 pamphlet slots, two addressed infants and toddlers, one addressed shingle vaccine in elderly and the rest were cosmetic surgery related- I must admit that one slot was empty. Four months later, my fault for not following up sooner, but the response I get now is because it has been four months... I must be seen again! This place is a utter joke of an office. However, they are very efficient in getting your insurance billed! Oh yeah and if your ins requires a prior authorization for prescription they require you to use their pharmacy as they will not work with other pharmacies for authorizations. Which, I believe is highly illegal. I wish I could have rated zero stars. If you are completely healthy with no genetic dispositions and your body isn't aging and your goal is to have every item marked on your superbill (paper they mark to say what services to be billed for your visit) then this is the place for you! 45 minutes in the waiting room for Carla Phipps with no contact from the nurses behind the desk and then when we went to ask about the wait we got a brush off because she was on the phone. We also had a long wait in the exam room 2 visits ago, apparently we were skipped somehow. We liked Carla but her staff is terrible and I agree with other posts that the receptionists up front are fairly rude. I also find it odd that no one from their office has called about the walkout but that might be because I immediately switched doctors when we got home. A customer service or even basic common courtesy could have prevented this problem but I guess that isn't a priority for the staff here. read more

Rude receptionist, i went in for a chest cold waited in the waiting room, waited in the room to have a nurse come in and say they called in an antibiotic. i thought it was weird that i didnt see the dr but thought ok. i went to get my medicine it wasnt there. i called the dr office back they said the nurse went in the wrong room come back in. when i get there THEY TRY TO CHARGE ME FOR THE VISIT....!!! i refused to pay for it. they did not care that i was noticeably sick or that this was all their fault had things went right the first time i wouldnt be back and i wouldnt have stayed sick as long as i did..they dont give a crap about how sick you are all they want is money and money they shouldnt have the nerve to ask for at that. read more

Have been a patient of C Phipps since a kid so well over twenty years. I was in college struggling to get by paying my own way and working four part time jobs. Yes seriously. I had a bill from seeing Phipps that was under $300 and I was working on paying it off with the lowest amount you can legally pay per month and not be turned over to collection which is $5. Trust me when I say this was even more than I could afford but I faithfully paid my $5 every month. Then the financial office manager started calling me and harassing me saying she demanded payment in full immediately or I'd be turned over to collections and permanently banned from their office! What?! I've been a patient almost my entire life and my bill is a measly couple hundred! I informed her of the law and I knew my rights she couldn't turn me to collections as long as I paid my bill monthly. So guess what? She started refusing my payments! She wouldn't cash my checks or charge my card! She flat out refused to take my payments so she could falsely claim I wasn't paying them. THIS IS ILLEGAL!!!!!!!!!! She informed me I was permanently banned from their office and they were reporting me to collections for nonpayment after she refused to charge my card or cash my checks! I attempted many different ways of payment but she refused to take my money so she could LIE! This was illegal and unethical and she knew it! Is it really that important to get a couple hundred bucks that you act ILLEGALLY and lose a lifelong patient??? I'd always paid every bill before I've never missed a payment. If they are doing this illegal activity what else is going on behind the scenes???? Your health is way too important to risk on an illegal place! Imagine what other unethical practices are in place here! I'm glad to never return! Even if they called me apologizing and removed their illegal collections claim which I'm fighting, I would never return. read more

If you ever go here, don't see Dr. Kalb. I wanted to see Dr. Johanning but he wasn't accepting new patients. Dr. Kalb had plenty of openings...and now I know why. Went in for knee pain and discussed the symptoms with Dr. Kalb. She had absolutely no idea what it was, and when I asked her if it could be an IT band issue, she said she didn't think so. On my way out she gave me a handout about IT band problems, and literally every symptom on there was one I had just discussed with her. I saw a PA at a different practice about a week later and within 2 minutes, she diagnosed it as an IT band issue, gave me some exercises, and I was on my way. While I was with Dr. Kalb, I asked her about a few other little things that had been going on that weren't overly concerning. She wasn't the slightest bit helpful. In fact, trying to talk to her was like fighting my way out of a wet paper sack. But when I saw the PA, she was a rockstar and knew immediately what these other symptoms were and what to do to correct them. On a side note...normally I check the reviews of every provider I see to avoid the problems I had with Dr. Kalb. I didn't this time because my knees were really bothering me and I just wanted to get in to see someone to find out what was going on. Guess I learned my lesson. Her reviews are horrible and some of the misdiagnoses of her previous patients are disturbing and negligent to say the least. read more

This pratice started off ok, however, the on-call physician neglected to call in a medication for my wife. I called the answering service and received a phone call from the same on-call physician. His tone started off very confrontational and then he proceeded to tell me that if I had called before noon on Saturday and not waited until 4pm to call, he may have been able to figure out a solution. Dr. Thomsen had no clue what may have prevented us from going to the pharmacy earlier in the day, so to criticize me in a negative tone was very unprofessional. I told him that if he couldn't handle a request on the weekend, he shouldn't be an on-call physician. That was followed up by, "well, if you don't like it, you can go somewhere else." Coming from someone who works in hospital administration, I would expect to lose patients if our physicians talke to our external customers like that. It's a shame this conversation ended the way that it did, considering there are some positive reviews on here. I hope for the future he considers taking customer service training. read more

As someone new to town, I was in the market for a doctor, so went to this location. Mine was the second appointment of the day at 8:30am. I arrived a half hour earlier to fill out paperwork with an empty stomach, so that I coul have blood tests done. The receptionist already seemed fed up and tired of being there. She was curt and seemed insulted when called upon to do her job. I finished my paperwork in about 20 minutes and was sent to the back to wait for the doctor. After waiting another 25 minutes, I asked someone in the back what time my appointment was scheduled for. I had no idea who anyone behind the desks was. They had no name tags,one woman was on the phone,the woman who was supposed to be my nurse was just sitting behind the desk, and when I asked about my appointment, she jumped up and said she could put me in a room. She took my vitals and left me in a room. At 9:15, I came out of the room to find Dr. Fowler standing at the desk. I asked her when my appointment would begin, and she said she was on her way in. I went back in the room, waited a few minutes longer for her to come in. By this time, I was fed up. There was no sense of concern or urgency, just indifference. This was my appointment to establish service and I felt like I was in the Twilight Zone. I was in the doctor's office that was really just a train station, where everyone was just standing around waiting and generally was uninterested in actually doing work. I had been there close to an hour before the doctor came in the room. I asked her if this was generally how they did business and she gave me some line about how this wasn't a good way to start therapeutic treatment, as by this time I was upset, I found her statement hypocritical and self-serving, so I told her I was leaving. read more
