What, you may ask is a non surfer, non body boarder, non para-sailor doing at this very rugged, and pretty dangerous beach that stretches for 1.5km along the Atlantic Ocean? Walking and watching naturally. Long sandy beach and dunes are perfect for bird watching as well as those more daring than I. Not for me are the rip tides or high rogue waves. Lawrencetown Beach has always been my personal favorite beach. I love the windy drive out there with its fantastic views. And that's before you even get to the beach. Lawrencetown is a beach persons beach. It's where all the serious beach activities happen. Surfing, windsurfing, kite boarding, and extreme sandcastles. It's where the big kids play. Lawrencetown is also an ever changing beach. Because it's not as sheltered as some beaches, its shoreline varies yearly. It goes back and forth between extremely rocky and a sandy haven. This year it's extremely rocky, probably the rockiest I've seen it in many years. If you're planning on swimming there is a life-guarded area and a nice bathroom/shower area in the big blue building. The water can be pretty cold, but if you're a local you won't mind. There is always a nice strong offshore breeze to cool you down on hot days as well. If you plan on going in the evening be warned that fog banks roll in more often than not. The beach is good for swimming, but for strong swimmers if you're venturing outside of the lifeguard area. Rip tides do occur and big surf is common. You can wander pretty far out on sandbars before encountering deep water though. In my experiences I haven't encountered too many jellyfish either. Lawrencetown has a bunch of very dedicated surfers who practice their sport year round. They're great to watch and easy to join. There is usually always a surfboard and wet-suit rental truck parked just before the beach. There are also several surf schools and lessons available on site. If you're like me and afraid of tempting fate you can stick to the easy to pick up boogie boarding. Lawrencetown is one of the best places to boogie board, even when it's rocky. If the shore is packed with rocks once you walk out in the water past your knees it's all sandbars. If you're really into the boogie boarding take advantage of any incoming storms or hurricanes. They make for uber warm waters and big surf. The parking situation is pretty good. There is a very long lot along most of the beach and in most cases you can park and walk fifty feet or so to a good beach spot. A word of warning: I have had my car broken into before. It was an old beater truck with crappy locks, but still be weary and hide all shiny things. read more

Even though this isn't a beach I would normally go in the summer to soak up some rays and swim, I love coming here. I love the view, the trails around the beach, the boardwalk and the parking lot. I really love the parking lot. Many beaches have little to no parking, so it's kind of a big deal. It's also just a few feet from the beach. I love coming here any time of the year, and if there is a big swell happening you can watch people surf. No matter what season, the good waves bring people out. read more

There's nothing better than reminiscing about summer in the middle of a Nova Scotian winter. My go to beach in the summer is always Lawrencetown. This beach is far enough from the hustle and bustle of the city to feel relaxed, but still near enough to go home for lunch (or a forgotten towel). There is plenty of room to stretch out, even on busy days, the beach stretches for what seems like forever, and is patrolled during the summer months by lifeguards This beach is unique because the ocean water is thankfully warm enough to swim in for more than a month out of the year. The waves at this beach make it a perfect surfing destination. If you are a beginner there are boards to rent and instructors who give hourly lessons. This is a surfers Paradise. The waves are massive which makes visiting this beach extremely interesting to any visitor. Lawrencetown is one of my favourite places in Nova Scotia. It's absolutely beautiful which makes it a haven for photographers. Rolling hills, ocean waves, rocks, sand and endless natural beauty. It's been a couple of years since I've been out to Lawrencetown Beach, but I think of it regularly because it was so beautiful. One of the times that I went out I went with a group who did surfing lessons and then tried to surf. Let's just say that I never achieved the desired goal. haha It was lots of fun though just riding the waves in on the board though! Everything that we needed was available to rent including boards and wetsuits. The one drawback that I found was that as a curvier woman, the suit that fit me was for someone much taller and when I was in the water, the extra leg material filled up with water, so it was like having 5lb weights around each ankle. (I like to think that's why I couldn't hop onto my feet on the board, but I may just be making excuses!) When I was there the beach was just rock, but not far into the water it became sand. It was still comfortable to sit though. There were lots of nice trails around to walk and the facilities had bathrooms and I think a canteen. There was ample parking and it was really cool to be able to watch actual surfers so close to the city! (This beach is known for getting big waves - great for surfing, photography and relaxing.) I look forward to getting out here again to try out the trails and take in the views! read more

I once lived directly across from this amazing blustery beach and have many fond memories of playing about, wielding sticks and skipping stones. Lawrencetown Beach is a local treasure. It is a wide open shoreline with pretty spectacular waves and high winds. As I'm sure everyone will tell you, it's the place to go if you're looking to surf in the area. As well, it's a great place to go if you're not quite into surfing but have an affinity for the daring game of "wave jumping." You know the drill; you stand and watch as a wave approaches and either try to jump over it or simply run away shrieking - pretty adventurous, no? If you're visiting Halifax and want to see what the local shores have in store, I highly recommend taking a trip down to Lawrencetown Beach. You can rent boards and take lessons from some highly skilled surf experts, or else take a stroll, collecting rocks and shells as you go. Be warned: It will probably be cold and the undertow is fierce. Be careful, stay warm and enjoy the salty ocean air. read more

Lawrencetown Beach is one of the favourites for the Surfers. I use to Boogie Board here, it was fun to play in the waves. I can say , it is not the warmest of beaches , but if you are surfing, you don't care. It is a beautiful beach to walk, if you are swimming, mind the water though, it can be very rough and has an undertow. So it is best to ask the lifeguard so you are in the right area, especially if you are there with young children. They do have washrooms and an canteen , and is a very well kept beach. read more

I've only ever tried surfing at Lawrencetown Beach once, but the place is beautiful enough in general that i've been more than once over the years. A great way to get out of the city or read/chill for the day in the summer. I'm a water baby and not even I enjoy swimming here in the summer though to pack your wet suit. read more

Ahhh Lawrencetown, you are the place to be. Located just outside Dartmouth, Lawrencetown Beach Provincial Park is always full of people looking for some relaxation or a tasty wave. Lawrencetown is basically the only beach in the Halifax Regional Municipality where surfing is in the cards. The waves are big and you can often time see professional and armature surfers kicking around waiting for the tide to roll in. This can be a little dangerous because of the added risk of being hit by a wayward surfer while in the water, but the risk is worth it. The water is generally warm (strangely warmest in October) and it is a real joy to play in the waves. Lawrencetown has a canteen and a number of surfboard rental businesses and is always worth the drive over the bridge. Be sure to check it out! read more

This is where Maritime surfers relish in all their wave-seeking delights. Known for accumulative currents and weighty water heights, Lawrencetown can offer a tad bit of aggression on the right day. However, its certainly a place for everyone. Its lofty sands trickle on for miles, and its generally a happy spot for locals to frequent from June through September. The waters are icy, but on a hot day, sometimes thats exactly what you need. Surfing lessons can be provided via multiple surf businesses who provide rental equipment and/ or instructional guides to get you in the know 'n flow. Located just a short drive from the beach, these businesses offer a service worth looking into! This is a gem of a spot and a must-go for summertime sun seekers. Lots of wind. Great for surfers but none were around so I busted out my bogie board and caught some major waves. At one point I had so much speed I almost slammed into a bunch of people walking by on the dry sand as I was flying by. I also ran on that beach. If you like to run. Watch out the houses on the end of the beach. It appears people own beach front homes and also may own part of this beach? I was not really sure where the property line ended and started. They seem to have laid out sand bags to mark territory and give off dirty looks to passer bys which included me as no boardwalk access to that part of the beach unless you run like I do then you can reach it in no time just by running the beach. read more
