I've never felt as excited/proud/disgusted/shocked as I did on Lazy Bones when I caught my first Bluefish - what an experience. I spent a day on Lazy Bones this past month and had one of the most fun days I've had in a long time! The mates were super helpful, teaching me how to diamond jig, how to reel and how to cast my line out (although I ended up failing miserably at casting). They sort of adopted me as their little first-timer and really showed me the ropes. I ended up catching 2 bluefish and they were patient enough with me to allow me to take a picture with each fish :) We spent a half day on the boat, caught 3 fish and had a great day on the water. I have never been on a better boat for an open fishing trip. Besides the almost 100 fish we all caught, which is part their great work finding fish and part luck, the crew are professional and patient. They are generous with the bait - with plenty and two natural kinds available - using both seemed to work. Two of the crew - Johnny and Ben - removed a large hook from deep in my 8 year old son's hand. They were caring and confident and took care of him in such an awesome way. I speak from a perspective of great experience, having fished all over the world and running a charter operation in my younger days. I have just read the the less than stellar reviews for Mike and the entire Lazy Bones operation. I find the opinions expressed by the authors to be ridiculous and in one case an out right lie. The Lazy Bones provides one of the most satisfying experiences you can have on the water regardless of race, creed or color. Remember, no one wants to catch fish more than the crew of any boat. Montauk has changed drastically over the last 50 years. It has been infiltrated with people that possess a tremendous level of entitlement and have very high opinions of themselves. I doubt that they would know a Bruno and Stillman if it hit them in the head. They are also the passengers that will leave the boat without tipping the mates. There are certain aspects of life that morons will never understand. The bottom line is that if you want guarantees don't go fishing. My hat goes off to Mike, Kathy and the entire Lazy Bones family. read more

Just spent this past Monday out on the Lazy Bones for my Dad's 60th. It was so much fun and the captain and crew are awesome! Friendly, down to earth and really know their shit ;) 1/2 day trips going on for bass and blues right now. No other charter I'd rather go on. Worth heading out there for! They will make sure to take good care of you out there and at the end of the day if your lucky enough to catch a bass (the way my uncle did) they will do the dirty work for you. I have fished Montauk since I was 8. This is a good boat which caters to families yet he will still put you on the fish. It's a family run boat with good mates and they won't tolerate some of Montauks saltier behaviors. I 've pulled in a 9.5 lb blackfish as well as scores of bluefish and fluke. The other good reason is he runs 2 trips so I can go fishing in the morning yet I can get back to the wife for lunch and not have to hear her complain like I ditched her. lol. Becareful call the day before to make sure they are sailing. Called them to make a reservation, you leave your name and number so they can call you back. Which they did, made reservations a week in advance, but they never called me back again to say they were not sailing. Drove 2 1/2 hours to find out they weren't sailing. Scheduled a last minute afternoon fishing trip for my husband, my son and myself. We are in from Las Vegas and were really looking forward to the afternoon. The crew was truly very helpful and friendly and overall the trip was fun, BUT there were about 7 people fishing off the stern and for some reason they were the only ones catching fish, and they were some good-sized fluke. I think they caught about 9 keepers plus a bunch of throw backs. When one of the crew came over to help with my line, I mentioned something about the girl on the front catching so many fish (she had at least 3 keepers), and he said something about giving her some extra help. Hmmm - I paid $50. Where was my extra help? Then I found out that some of those people up front actually worked on the boat. That was also interesting. As the boat was heading back to Montauk, I chatted with another guest, and he told me they were all using a fish attractant called Gulp. That was why they were getting all the fish, and he was sorry he hadn't brought any. I spoke with another friend of mine after we got home, and he told me that using Gulp would definitely attract the fish away from the other lines. Like I said, we had fun, but it would have been nice to have caught some fish especially for my son who was on leave from the army and has never been fishing. I know sometimes you just don't catch any, but there was definitely something going on here. It was disappointing. Oh, and oddly enough, it was one of them who won the pot for catching the biggest fish. You would think the captain would want the "paying tourists" to have equal advantage. Just sayin'. read more

I made the mistake of booking a trip with them on October 1, 2011 and was treated as a second class citizen. This boat caters to Mike Young and their regulars (per Kathy). She will NOT tell you that when you book your trip but when I called to complain about how my autistic son was treated she asked me why I didn't request a specific spot when I booked with her and why I didn't tell her he was handicap and she promptly hung up on me without trying to make things right. Does this family run business need to know about my son's autism to treat him well? They should be ashamed of their behavior and for treating a boy poorly (let alone and handicap boy). I'm sad and disappointed and hope that no mother has to feel this way. There is nothing worse than a disappointed little boy but I think I will surprise him with a trip on the Viking next weekend to fix this mess and build his confidence back up. I'll let you all know how that goes - I'm not going to tell them about his handicap either and let's see if the big corporation or mom and pop shop does a better job at customer service and satisfaction. Do yourself a favor and go with a private charter or Viking where you at least can get a fair shake. Granted they're cheap but the old adage is true "you get what you pay for" and I guess I paid to have my son treated poorly by these people. The few pennies saved going out with this group is NOT worth it. I would give less than 1 star if it was possible, I urge any parent to take your child elsewhere (unless you're one of their regulars which most of us are not). I know from past experience that the Viking crew goes out of the way to help ALL patrons on their ships (they know that they'll get a tip if they treat you well) but given the economy I wanted to give a small (mom and pop) business my money (BIG mistake). If you have 6 people go with a private charter, there are many professional captains to choose from and they will appreciate and respect your time and money. All I can say is stay FAR away from Lazy Bones (their name really fits)! read more

On October 27th, 2012, my 21 year old son and I went out on the boat from Montauk. It was a 65 degree day and although the town was empty, the boat had about 25 people ready to fish for blues and stripers on the 1PM to 5 PM jigging trip. WHAT AN AMAZING DAY! The boat caught about fifty big blues in the first hour and after the second hour, we all were doing the catch and release because we had so many fish each. The boat must have caught about 200 blues. We followed the churning water and Seagulls just off the coast of the lighthouse and for the first time ever I learned what people meant when they said that as soon as they dropped their line a fish was on. I caught 18 big blues, ( yes 18) and my son caught 8. What an amazing time.The crew were very helpful and we had enjoyable time. The stripers were scarce but the amount of Blue fish and the fight they put up was well worth the trip. I would recommend using the Lazy Bones over any of the other charters and their price was alot cheaper than the Viking Fleet, which cancelled my reservation the night before I was supposed to go out fishing, and after I had already booked two nights at the Royal Atlantic.
