I had two young students staying with our family from Japan, and I thought they might enjoy the experience of riding horses in an authentic California environment. Kim and Ashley provided that and more. I appreciated the time in the ring before the ride for each rider to learn how to work with his/her assigned horse. Then we headed out on the trails behind and above the ranch, some parts of which included ocean views and lovely trees. Kim and Ashley clearly understood and cared about the horses. We felt supported and respected as beginning riders, never rushed. I have already started to think about taking future guests to enjoy this experience. A must-do on the Coast.

We were paired with two beautiful horses, including an enormous draft horse named Buck. Kim, the trainer, was warm, welcoming, and clearly loves her horses. She guided us through the foothills and into cool forest trails, where we even stopped to visit other horses along the way. Ashley the 2nd trainer joined us on the ride, and she was kind, supportive, and helped make the experience even more enjoyable. The entire afternoon far exceeded my expectations. From the breathtaking scenery to the comfort and confidence we felt with the horses, it was unforgettable. And after the long drive I was grateful to find decent porta-potties in the Poplar Beach parking lot! The way down to the beach was quite steep, so I decided to stroll along the elevated Half Moon Bay Coastal Trail instead. I found some of the most majestic views I've seen in Nor-Cal. This is a great place to wander and remember to breathe. After a few hours here, I was sure that whatever troubles I had could never outspan the ocean.

My daughter had a great time! We first went 2 years ago and she was matched with Billy, a sweet pony. This year she was matched with Ranger, a horse who once used to barrel race. I'm not sure what that means but my daughter was excited to tell me this every day. My friend is very brave. The horses she rides are tall and usually trained by a professional. I fell off the horse once, and now rarely dare to ride again. This place is a solid first class farm specializing in German horses. They provide many services such as breeding, boarding, and training jumping and dressage horses. Head trainer, Daniel Zilla is amazing with young horses and student riders. I'm amazed at how this 72 acre farm is so well organized and clean. How much do you like horses? They go above & beyond to make themselves available to their students and are invested in seeing them improve and reach their goals - all while having fun along the way. I've progressed more in my riding in the past two months than I ever did learning to ride in my early teen years. The schooling horses are absolute gems, the barn is wonderful & well maintained, and the Trillium community is vibrant! I am finally speaking up about my experience in hopes that no other person or child experiences…read morewhat I did. The ride was beautiful and the weather was gorgeous. The horse I rode was an angel. BUT the ride almost didn't happen for me. Why? Because one one of the workers abused me by yelling at me in a loud, condescending, and absolutely terrifying way that left me with fright, anger, and tears in my eyes that I had to hide behind my sunglasses so that my daughter and her cousin wouldn't see. It was infuriating and 3 months later I am still a bit distraught. It was my very first time EVER on a horse and still to this day I am not totally sure what I did wrong which prompted the worker to abuse me but I assure you I did nothing intentionally bad. Perhaps I pulled the reigns too far back. I am not sure and there was a language barrier as well so I did ask "what?" and had some confusion as to what he wanted me to do or not to do. I do not remember the worker's name. But I will never forget the anger, rage, and terror he spewed toward me. My cousin after the ride even told me he heard him yell at me. Whatever I did "wrong" there was no justification to be treated the way I did by this person. And for this I will never go back to this place nor will my child. The feeling I experienced after getting berated all the while trying to navigate a whole new feeling and experience of being on a horse for the FIRST time was overwhelming to say the least. I almost quit right there but I did not want to take away from my child's or family's experience. I also had looked forward to this adventure as I had gone through cancer treatment prior and what better way to celebrate than to ride a beautiful horse on beautiful Half Moon Bay...? THANK GOD there was another worker who was an absolute joy full of smiles and KIND who helped ease my angst and made the experience enjoyable. I'm glad I did it and completed it but BOY what a horrible horrible start. I hope this company takes a look at their workers and re-evaluates them because I will never return or suggest this place to anyone. I can NOT imagine if the person who yelled at me yelled at another person who was more vulnerable than I OR at a child god forbid. THIS is why I am finally writing something. I just had my family that went on the ride visit me recently and we were talking about the incident and my cousin's wife said ..."you know what, leave the review..what if that person treats a child like that in the future?" And so here I am letting people know that there is a worker out there who is totally completely out of line. I understand safety first BUT this was NOT the way in which to handle a situation not in dire need. The horse was at a standstill. I did not yank or do anything abrupt or out of line to warrant the horrid behavior spewed toward me. Even If the situation was dire or dangerous there should have been a totally different way to approach it. He ruined a part of a very meaningful experience. However, I'm glad I found the strength to go on and persevere and create memories with my family. The ride was in November 2025.
