One of my favourite department store as it is way more calm then the Galeries Lafayette and Printemps. You could find all the luxury brands you need and the layout of the place makes it easy to go around. Some works are done (refurbishment) in some areas of the department store nevertheless you could use the indoor bridge to visit the other side and the food store (la grande epicerie) Recommended if you are looking for some shopping therapy time! read more

This is a department store that sells beautiful clothes, and is beautiful in its own right as well. Despite the name, this is not the place to come for good deals. The items sold here are mostly luxury goods, with lots of designer labels offered, although there are also some things at more of a J. Crew price point (including J. Crew itself). I would say it's akin to Bloomingdale's in the US in terms of prices. Everything is displayed beautifully and the staff was super helpful. My favorite part of this store is that the top floor is all for kids - and in addition to the beautiful displays of kids' clothes, toys and books, there is a play room for kids with staff to supervise them while you shop. We had lunch at Le Monte Novado and La Maison de la Truffe at the Grande Épicerie at the Bon Marché. The food was good, better at the truffle place than the Spanish one, where the quality of the bellota is not top notch. In addition, service at the Monte Novado is much less precise and less pro-active. Convenient when you shop at La Grande Épicerie, but you'd be better off at La Table on the 1er étage, although the queue is usually longer. Too pricey for its quality. read more

I'm packing up my bags and I am moving into this store! Take Nemian Marcus, William Sonoma, Dean & Deluca and roll it all up into one. Huge doesn't do it justice. This store is behemothic! Make sure to enter both the food side and the non-food side. The food side is a gourmet market with an amazing cheese counter, prepared food section, and the rest is divided by region: your Italian goods, American goods etc. The wine cellar downstairs is divine as well. The non food side is almost overwhelming. The first floor is bags, jewelry and makeup. The lower floor is men's. The upper floors are women's clothing (all very, very high-end designers, but it's always fun to browse!). The top floor is for home and the attic is like a Toys-R-Us. It's pricey but it's one of those places that is just fun to explore! read more

In general, I'm not a big fan of department stores - there's usually too much muck to weed out. However: This is my favorite department store in Paris. If Printemps is Bergdorf, Galerie Lafayette is Saks/Macy's, then Bon Marche is like Barney's except with an amazing food market complete with an epicerie, charcuterie, boulangerie, patisserie, marche, fromagerie, and various traiteurs. Individually, not all the counters are the best of the best, but collectively, this market is every pinky raising foodie's wet dream (Galerie Lafayette's top floor food market comes close but it's way crowded and I hate navigating through GL.) The macarons at the patisserie counter were miserable though, just a note. You just can't not love a dept store that has a food market on the first floor instead of makeup and perfume. Another reason why Bon Marche is so favored: it was here that I made the best purchase of all time - a navy blue padded Givenchy nightingale at 50% off, plus a VAT refund, for which Bon Marche has a service on the top fl (rare, and so so convenient, I recommend taking the cash, less the handling fee, on the spot, because the airport VAT agents will also take a handling fee and it's a bigger hassle. Plus, if you travel elsewhere in Europe and fly back to the US from an airport in another country, you may not be able to get the VAT back altogether). In terms of shopping in Paris, if you visit in July or January, you will not find better deals anywhere else in the world, especially at department stores. Even if its American counterparts stock the same brands, the Paris stores usually have better selection, because ...well, American dept stores cater to conservative (read: bland) American taste. Shopping at Le Bon Marche is such a throwback for me as an American. Frankly I can't remember ever shopping at a store that is so customer service oriented except when I've been outside of my own country, like in Japan for example. Looking for gifts we went to the floor with housewares and were so impressed with the sheets, the cookware, the dishes, glassware, you name it. All beautifully displayed and priced to browse in my case. We started looking at French tea towels and the kindest middle aged lady came over to assist. She couldn't speak a word of English and I speak little more French but she was so happy--proud even--to show me the selection and where I could find more since that was my interest. That's the kind of experience that just put me in a mindset to buy gifts for friends and something for myself as well. She was all too pleased to wrap my gift and give me a shopping bag that I enjoyed sporting all over St. Germain de Pres that Saturday afternoon. One thing I loved about shopping in France in general is that when it's your turn it's as if you're the only customer in the store or the market or wherever. Yesterday, I was at Galleries Lafayette and went to price some Sisley Paris face oil in the cosmetics section. I asked the gentleman working if Bon Marche carries Sisley. He told me that they did, but that they charge more for it. WHAT? Seriously? He said that BM marks everything up more. Guess what? He was right. The face oil at GL was 135 euros and at BM it was 155 euros. Dude...not cool. I'm not sure about other items because I haven't started paying that close of attention to prices. 5 stars because of the gorgeous escalators, and just the look of the place.... it reminds you of Neiman Marcus on Wilshire, near Rodeo Drive in Los Angeles. The food section is very international and fancy, and everything is just right. For the chic and wealthy it is the in place, for the rest a please touch museum. The whole Rue du Bac from the Seine up to Le Bon Marché is a promenade well worth it. A definite stop if you start in Tuileries and head down to Saint Germain, then to Notre Dame, and through Ile St Louis go through the Marais to Place des Vosges, then lunch or dinner. read more

An entire fresh and prepared food section with a specialist at each little kiosk. A processed food section with more pates, tapenades, chutneys and oils than you can shake a stick at. Le Bon Marché is a little piece of heaven ... The only department store on the left bank this is the place to head if you are looking for a large store selection in a boutique setting. They have all the classic designers as well as a great young designers department located above Le Grand Epicerie (well located if you want to head downstairs for a piece of cake aferwards!) The young designers department is pretty standard as it carries zadig, paul and joe, sessun, vanessa bruno athée, isabelle marant etoile...etc ... along with a good selection of jeans, what is special about it is how relaxing the environment is and how helpful the staff are, not to mention lighting is good and mirrors are flattering. This is a fraud and at the Printemps and Galerie Lafayette it's totally different and fair ! - the Tax Free issue, I did not know that the Bon Marche substitutes themselves for the French customs .... Which means that you must carry your passport with you, regardless of all the risks that it involves ... !! A picture of your passport is not acceptable when ALL and I MEAN ALL OTHER STORES gladly accepts your picture passport ! Short point: hit the food department on the ground floor (street entrance) - amazing. Beautiful store and interesting displays. Truly we did not go all the way to Paris to visit a mall. That said, this famous shopping mecca has name recognition and as we were in the neighborhood thought we should at least take a look. This is a HUGE store. Huge. And expensive. If you are a shopper, be prepared to wander and spend a lot of time finding various departments. The staff is very helpful and I did see a few items (bonsai terrarium ecospheres) that I have not seen in the States - so definitely you will find items of interest. I wouldn't think that a huge department store would have such a good book collection, but they had a great selection of books in English too! Whoever took control of this place has definitely killed its soul and charm. It has become one of these countless globalized luxury experiences for rich tourists and it has strictly nothing to do with the Parisian spirit or France anymore. As a Parisian who used to consider this place my headquarters a few years back, I am hardly coming there anymore. I am sad and appalled to see, like yesterday, 16 year old jet-setter girls talking to employees like dogs, who themselves in return seem to mostly hate their jobs and the crowds here. The whole experience feels like being at terminal 2E of Charles de Gaulle airport, or actually, any international airport lounge, with just a ridiculous veneer of fake "hyper France" products, that will only fool the uneducated ones. Call me a romantic, but I can't help thinking of Emile Zola's novel "Ladies' paradise", which at the time actually described the Bon Marche and ...hear my heart cry. read more

If you are looking for high end fashions while travelling though Paris you will find just about every well known couturier at Le Bon Marché. This is a review of the grocery store. Came here after visiting Pierre Herme, the pastry and sweets boutique. Was a busy but good day. This place reminded me of the grocery and food stores in the basements of Japanese department stores where you can actually get really excited about food. It's not a huge store floor space-wise but they pack in a lot of really nice foods and ingredients. The staff are quite friendly and somewhat international I guess as I struck up a conversation with a friendly girl at the register who was from Canada. The prices are not on the cheap side but I doubt you could get the combination of the selection and quality elsewhere. Here you don't mind shelling out the extra Euro. I guess after a visit to Pierre Herme, it doesn't seem so expensive anymore... read more

Le Bon Marché carries lines from every imaginable designer. Also visit La Grande Épicerie Wine Cellar and the La Grande Épicerie across the street (you can take the sky bridge from the second floor.) The pâtisserie counter is beautiful. The fresh produce is a visual experience. This is a Parisian fashionista and gastronomic destination. The best department store in Paris. The clothes and brands selections are outstanding for all ages. Most of the ladies working are very sympathetic and try hardly to understand you and have your time there a pleasure. I only had trouble on the shoes, as, only the workers of the brand can help you, I was totally ignored by a group that was chatting and forgot about working. Although this incident didn't stop me of getting the shoes and trying myself. The tax cash refund in store is great! All departments stores in Europe should do the same, would safe us a good time at the airport. For guaranteed they take you credit card number if you forget to "stamp" it at the airport. TIP: At the AirFrance Terminal they say that you can stamp passing the security and passport control, not true! ALWAYS those machines are outside the check-in, never at the gate. At the international terminal is easier to refund your taxes, they have a good space and people (sometimes no so polite) to help you. The only point is that the restaurants shouldn't close so early, tourist don't have an exact time to eat. 6pm they were already closed and the store hour was until 8pm. For last, the food at the building across streer, MUST, have a sit in option. It's seemed so delicious and at lunch time was the better option around. read more

For shoppers regret something you didn't get, try "24 serves" online which I believe runs by La Bon Marche. The oldest department store in Paris, and perhaps the finest. I love that the department store is so alive, kicking and looking so fine in Paris. Le Bon Marche is indicative of all this at its best, and thus, it's a joy to see so much activity and fashion, without being as crazy busy as the competition. My significant other bought something, but as I was bored waiting for the transaction to be over I was overlooking the service being provided to the other customers in order to entertain myself. I listened in and noticed people were only offered a beverage after the purchase an item.
