I loved the particular room I was in (#53). The bed was really comfortable, the air conditioner worked well, and the room was super clean. The shower had a nice massage head with adjustable settings and excellent water pressure. I stayed for six nights. The decor is creative and fun to look at. (Please see photos). The employees were all friendly, personable, and fluent in English and French. In the morning the hotel provides a bountiful buffet with eggs, croissants, bread pudding, fruit, baked beans, and more! Coffee and wine are available self-serve in the lounge at all times. I'm deducting 1.5 stars due to the terrible, stress-inducing parking situation. Hotel Champlain has its own walled-in parking lot which has marked spaces about 2" wider than the width of a vehicle. The lot has various obstacles like columns, a curve, an incline, and a luggage cart storage area, designed to maximize your chances of crashing into something. Every time we moved the car, we needed two people to stand outside the vehicle: one to keep wheeling luggage carts out of the way in a slide-puzzle-like shuffle, and one to give verbal directions to the driver like "you're two inches from the concrete pillar so pull in your side mirror." The hotel has over 50 rooms and only 24 parking spaces. We paid an extra fee for a guaranteed parking spot, but several times someone had parked in our spot anyway, necessitating a report to the front desk and rearrangements. I rate this hotel 3.5 stars rounded up to four stars. I want to stay here again! read more

Stay away unless you want a tiny overpriced room, absolutely no customer service and substandard breakfast. Having paid 1400$ for 5 night stay 5 months in advance, I was disappointed with my room. It was dark and the tiny window looked out on 3 other windows to another building--2 feet away! Very claustrophobic! Called front office and asked if I could get an upgrade to a bigger room with a view. Was informed that there were no other rooms that day or the next ,but I could check with the front desk 2 days later. But I decided 2 days later I didn't want to take the time to move or pay more money. I learned that morning that they'd already changed my room to what turned out to be smaller, much older with dirty torn carpet. I was forced to move and although I was assured by 3 employees that they had removed charges for the "upgrade ", they went ahead and charged me extra and I got no response from my long email asking about it. read more

The only positive of this hotel was the location, it's near everything. The front staff was extremely rude, not helpful with any questions asked. The hotel is very run down, the shower head refused to stay up, consistently falling down, there wasn't a fitted sheet on the bed, only a flat sheet. And the whole place smelled musky and like cigarettes. read more

There are a lot of pluses with Le Champlain Hotel. The biggest one is the included breakfast as well as the espresso machine. Breakfast included small pastries, hard boiled eggs, yogurt and cereal. There were also daily specialties like crepes, quiche or a savory bread pudding. Their espresso machine was pretty awesome and you could use it all day! This was a bonus in the cold winter when you needed something warm and caffeinated. My friend and I stayed in a cute double with the beds facing each other. There was even a privacy curtain separating the two which was a unique room set up. Wi-fi was fast and we didn't have any issue with hot water or water pressure. There was also a rubber mat for your boots to catch the melting snow. Nice & useful! The hotel is walking distance to everything in Old Town and we even walked 15-20 minutes outside of Old Town to the old, old town. lol. Although there was one staff member (who worked nights) who was a little rude and never said one welcoming word upon our check-in, the rest of the staff were all very helpful and kind. They even gave us taxi quotes and recommended a nearby laundromat. Given the far more expensive hotel choices within a small walking radius - this hotel was quite a good deal! read more

Terrible service, I have never been treated so badly by hotel staff before. The receptionist upfront snapped and yelled at me when checking in. Others had the same issue. I took Rt. 201 from the US & took ex. 134 for Rt 175. To find the hotel continue north All The Way, until you go through the city's old main gate. Now you can see Old Quebec, small streets, tourists on foot, and all the old shops. Take a quick left onto Du Parloir to drive by 115 rue Saint-Anne/Hotel Champlain. This place is a joke. Valet parking left us waiting for our car for 75 minutes with continued excuses about not finding our car, etc. The building next door "hotel st. Anne" which is actually an expansion of this hotel, was small, passably clean but misrepresented in online booking images. Both my brother and I got insect bites while sleeping. The hotel was clean during our stay and was a reasonable price. The walls are thin, atleast in our room, and the breakfast left a lot to be desired. Also, the room was very warm, dispite lowering the temperature on the A/C. When we checked in, we were asked to give a spare set of car keys to the front desk "in case of an emergency" which we found strange. The parking garage is very small. Parking a truck, large SUV, or mini-van would probably be quite a challenge. The hotel is located in a quiet neighborhood that is close to the old town and the area is very walkable. Cute little hotel. Great location in Old Quebec for walking around and enjoying the sights. Our room had a double bed and was the best hotel we stayed at during our trip to Montreal and Quebec City (I can say this because we stayed in 4 different hotels). It's pretty unassuming from the exterior, but the interior is modernly decorated but not in a cold way. Very warm colors everywhere, rooms are tastefully decorated and the bed was comfortable. You get a free continental breakfast, free cappuccino and espresso in the lobby, and free wifi in your room. The shower had great water pressure and a cute glass sink with a koi fish graphic. Everything was very clean and the staff was very friendly and helpful. No dirty looks for not being able to speak much French, very key. Recommended to travelers looking for a comfy and friendly hotel. A cab ride from the train station was very short and inexpensive. read more

a very unassuming modern exterior right in the heart of old quebec, hotel le champlain was actually in a great location just up the hill from rue saint-jean, the main drag leading from chateau frontenac to the city gate at port saint-jean and on to the more commercial part of the city. the hotel was small, but i was delighted to be able to book a nicer room with hot tub and fireplace at a more reasonable price than more popular hotels such as auberge sainte-antoine in the more ritzy and out-of-the-way le petit champlain. when we arrived, we parked in the parking area, which is a very reasonable additional CAD$15 per night. you leave your keys with the very friendly people behind the front desk and they can move the car to a more appropriate spot. unfortunately, the hotel does not accept american express, which is my credit card of choice when traveling. and it seems that only two people we encountered during our stay knew what to do...the others seem to be either the night watchman or newly hired. when we entered the hotel room, we were greeted with a very nice layout, marble surfaces, cozy and warm colored interiors and warm lighting. the banquette furniture was not very comfortable, but the chair and ottoman was acceptable. more importantly, the king-sized bed was very comfortable. and the fireplace was not a real fireplace, but a gas one...which is alright with us. the hot tub was great, nestled in its own little corner with a downlight. and chocolate was on each of our pillows. what a nice gesture! but what was disappointing was the sound of the elevator. you can hear its rumble as it went up and down the building all day and night. we eventually got used to it after 3 days and 2 nights, but i would have thought twice to book here if i had known... read more

The staff was friendly and helpful and the included breakfast was nice. The best part was the decor, which was simple, cozy and homely. It didn't feel like a bland and stuffy hotel room. The view wasn't anything special (looked into other apartments) but we just closed the curtains for privacy. The location is also really great. If you don't require much in the line of luxury, the Champlain is fine. Great location right in the heart of the old town, quite clean (although currently undergoing renovations as of May 2016). But if you like your creature comforts you may want to look elsewhere. Long story short, we were sorry we had opted for "quaint," "charming," and location over the greater convenience and service of a larger hotel with room service, a pool, on-site restaurant and concierge, etc. Pros: Location; excellent Wifi; clean. (The lobby coffee maker others mention is really nothing special.) Cons: The window of our standard room faced a brick wall inches away with a window to an adjacent apartment, so no light at all in the room. Sparse furnishings. No amenities if you like that sort of thing (and we definitely do). We had reserved a parking spot, but on arrival, the only one available was extremely narrow and against a stone wall - only a bike could have maneuvered into it, not a car; it should not have been counted as a parking spot. The clerk told us we could opt for valet parking for an extra charge, but the car would be parked at another hotel a few blocks away so there would always be a wait when wet wanted the car. As we went out for a stroll the first night of our stay, rather disheartened at our predicament, we turned a corner...and spied a lovely high-rise Hilton up on a hill a few blocks away. We immediately phoned and reserved a room for the rest of our stay for only about $116 American per night, and were able to enjoy the rest of our time in Quebec City in the comfort we enjoy (complete with room service breakfast, speedy valet car retrieval, and a gorgeous view of the old city from our 7th floor window). Perhaps this makes us sound snobbish or stuck up, but I don't think that's the issue at all; there are plenty of folks like us who like a little more service and a little more luxury than a clean, decent, but bare-bones facility like the Champlain can offer. If your preferences run more to the clean, conveniently located, but basic, the Champlain might be just to your liking. read more

Excellent location. Lobby was...weird. But the room, with hot tub, comfie bed and fireplace was spacious and great! Breakfast has a lot of options but donuts and croissants were terrible. Hot cheese bread pudding was pretty delicious! Like everyone says, the free hot chocolate/cappuccino machine in the lobby is awesome! I was afraid the staff were going to tell me to stop using it so much .. Sure enough our last morning there it was broken. Probably from me. read more

The location was great! Close to all the old Quebec attractions. The problem is that it looked completely different than on the website! Sooo different that we thought it was the wrong hotel. The rooms are quite run down. Everything is very dated. No parking unless you reserve ahead with your stay. So it's a hustle to figure a parking situation although you are a paid guest. The morning crew is very friendly, particularly Marina. The night ones not so much. The price is way to high for the accommodation. We didn't try the breakfast, so I can't say anything. There is no restaurant on site. It's just a make shift kitchen they set up on the first floor of the hotel. I personally would not stay there again. read more

This isn't a bad hotel. It's very good looking nice and peaceful. It's just the elevator in the hotel that makes a really bad noise!!!!! It annoys me a lot. The only time you don't hear it is at nighttime because no one uses it. The wifi here is free that's good because some hotels charges a lot. The beds are pretty good and the TV isn't big but isn't small. The TV has all French channels. Every show I watch is in French they should show some English channels If people from America are coming. I mean come on it's a hotel they should broadcast international channels. I means it's not bad but OK. Overall I would say this is a pretty good hotel for a few days. I wouldn't stay here longer than 3 days 2 nights. read more

LOCATION, LOCATION, LOCATION !!! This hotel is right in the heart of things in Old Quebec's upper City. Just 2 blocks to the Chateau Frontenac and 2 blocks from the shops & cafe's on Rue St Jean. The rooms are good size & clean. The staff very helpful and a good basic breakfast (including fresh croissants & a waffle machine) for $10 (US) extra. Otherwise just a short walk to cafe's on Rue St Jean. They do have extra cost parking though the spaces are very tight however just having a parking lot is a major plus in the old city. We definitely would return here on our next trip to Quebec. read more

Worst management and customer service. We got here early at 1pm, receptionist took about 15 min to attend to us (busy chatting with some other guest forever as the line builds up). Another lady finally came to help us but room wasn't ready which was fine since we were early. Stored our baggage, came back at actual check in time at 4pm and the receptionist there rudely said without looking "I'm busy right now, go away"............ um ok..another receptionist finally served us after and was also rude and condescending when our room wasnt even ready at check in time. Other customers waiting there also shared their dissatisfaction as they were waiting. Manager comes to talk to us and basically dismisses it all and says they're busy. Being busy doesn't mean it's ok to be rude to your customers and give terrible service. And the room wasn't even that clean. Clearly none of them should be in customer service. read more

Looking for a reasonably priced hotel in the heart of Quebec city, hotel Champlain is perfect match. Clean room, spacious bathroom, relatively simple and functional furniture. The personnel is very friendly and helpfull. They have a small private parking lot and for an additional charge I kept my car there. The breakfast was not included in the room rate, but what better then finding a charming coffee shop for your morning coffee. If you however want to have an early morning cup of caffein in your room, there is a coffee machine in the lobby. Perfect place for one, maximum two nights of stay. Hotel Champlain is situated nicely in the center of Old Quebec City. it is walking distance from all the sites and activities in Old Quebec City. The hotel supplies a very ample and tasty breakfast, served between the hours of 7am and 11am. This makes it very flexible and with the unusually high cost of food in the area, helps to hold down costs. The hotel is very comfortable, but needs a little updating. The bed was very comfortable. The room appointments were nice but furniture could be updated a bit. Everything was clean and comfy but perhaps changing out a few towels and sheets occasionally (some were shabby, loose threads, small holes from normal wear etc) would improve the first impression. Bath tile grout was a little dirty/moldy and needed cleaning and resealing. If you have any physical limitations, the elevator was a little problematic during our stay, failing a couple of times. Repairs were quickly made but nonetheless the alternative stairs could be difficult if you have a particular physical limitation. There is a coffee machine in the lobby...a very nice coffee machine. This is a special treat here and one most will certainly enjoy. The staff was extremely helpful and friendly. They were all, at least, bilingual and able to address all our needs and questions. Overall, we were pleased with our stay here and would recommend Hotel Champlain to friends visiting Quebec City. read more

This hotel is beautiful. From the outside, it looks kind of cramped, but the inside is great and homey. Everything here was great: service, rooms, cleanliness, and the breakfast. Parking is a little tight, so you might want to arrive early even if you reserved a spot. One of the best things to the hotel is its proximity to all the attractions of Old Quebec City. The hotel is a short walk from the citadel and the fort. The breakfast is included with the room and is not your average continental breakfast. This breakfast includes the standard pastries and bread, but also includes a cheese and meat plate, crepes, chocolate hazelnut sauce, and more. It was really really good. Overall, we had a great experience at this hotel, and definitely will restay if we are in Quebec. read more

I really enjoyed my stay at this hotel. There was free breakfast included which was really convenient and saved us a lot of money. Everyone was very friendly and they went out of their way to accommodate our early check-in and our extra needs with our baby and crib. There were extra services like free WiFi and a computer to print my boarding pass, as well as free espresso in the lobby. The location is great and I have nothing I could have wished to be different. I don't write reviews, way to much work, I'm 77 and don't have the time. However I'm compelled to write this one about our time at the Champlain Hotel. Quebec was not on my bucket list because I heard to many negative stories about the people only speaking French. We spend the summer in Vermont and Quebec is a 5 hour ride for us so off we go with two other couples. Arriving in Old Quebec City I took one look at the Fairmont Le Chateau Frontenac and after reading negative reviews about Champlain Hotel thought why am I not staying there. We didn't make the plans so on with the program and now I'll cut to the chase. If the Eagles stayed at the Champlain Hotel the name of their famous song would not have been "Welcome to the Hotel California", it would have been "Welcome to the Hotel Champlain". We had rooms 15, 20, and 24, 15 and 24 had a fireplace, all were very clean, spacious with very comfortable beds. The staff very helpful and gracious they greeted us in French and as soon as I said "Hello" it was english from then on, same with the people of Quebec. If you're looking for a warm friendly comfortable Hotel this is it. Forgot to mention breakfast was excellent and walk everywhere. Thank you to the Staff for a wonderful stay. read more

We stayed here for the giant music festival, Festival d'ete de Quebec in 2015. Great little boutique hotel right in the old city, and walking distance to so many interesting things. Cute, clean rooms, with enough space and a comfortable bed. Heating and cooling unit worked well, and didn't make too much noise. Bathroom and linens were clean. I'm in the habit of checking for bed bugs in every place I stay - none! Friendly staff, and a decent breakfast in the morning. The price simply cannot be beat, but we booked this as a package with the music festival tickets, so I'm not sure how much of a price break we got. The only thing to be aware of is that you need to make a parking reservation at the same time you make the room reservation, which seems a little unusual. I would definitely stay here again, and tell my friends and family about this hotel. read more

Stayed here for two nights while in QC. The location is nice, although it was a pain with parking. The hotel itself was clean and room (two bedroom) was really spacious and big. Free breakfast which was OK. Free wifi that didn't work whatsoever in our room, but worked in our hallway and everywhere else in the hotel (MOST annoying thing ever during our stay). Would recommend this place to stay while you are in QC. They also had a coffee machine that made cappuccinos and the like in the lobby which my cousins really enjoyed (myself not so much because I'm not a coffee drinker). read more

Blissful, quiet sleep in four-poster brass bed in huge room, sparkling clean. Service at front desk bilingual, friendly, and expert. Computer available for guests to check email for free; I printed my boarding pass for flight out for free. Hotel easy walk away from many of the best tourist sites, superbly situated in Haute-Ville. Small buffet breakfast included in room price.
