Well, we were in France, so the requirement turned into good and easy because there is no quick. We were seated on the patio (most of the restaurant is patio) in the midst of a lively lunch crowd. Our service was good and everything we ordere fit the need and the expectation perfectly. We split some salad, some fries, some cheese and some sausages. All very good. Then for dessert a crepe. Moule with no frites? Definitely a tasty Camembert sauce for your mussels is a good choice. I was surprised no bread comes along with this to soak up the sauces after, but I looked around and no one else had bread either. The service is great. I'm from NYC and am a foodie. I love eating in different types of places all over the world. This place was very convenient and pretty. Although convenience doesn't mean the food tasted good. I would have given one star but they took back their food and gave me a refund. I didn't know what to order so I ordered their ham and I ordered a spaghetti, just to be safe in case the ham was bad. Ham I felt was a safe meat, it's fairly easy to make and usually comes pre prepared. All you have to do is heat it up. The ham I got was extremely dry and tasted like sandpaper. I was very disappointed but eagerly awaiting my spaghetti. The spaghetti finally came and it was burnt and had no sauce. I don't know how one can mess up a spaghetti in which you have to boil. I've never heard of a "sautéed" spaghetti that didn't have sauce. I don't know where the French pride was in this cooking but it was definitely lacking. We attempted to dine at Le Garde Manger at 6:30 on Sept. 11. We were seated on the patio, ordered our meals and drinks within approximately 10 minutes. We had been there over an hour and the only items brought to our table were sparkling water and 1 bowl of pathetic French Onion soup (bland and lacking). We spoke with a server who assured us our food would be out in 5 minutes. Fifteen minutes later, no food and we were now being completely ignored. All neighboring tables were able to order, receive and finish their meals. We spoke with the manager and simply asked for the check so we could leave and find food elsewhere. We waited another 10 minutes and the manager threw the check on our table without any word. We have visited Bayeux previously and have always been treated wonderfully. This restaurant and the staff are not indicative of most people and/or businesses in Bayeux. I would never recommend this place. read more

I feel sorry for the diners who had such a terrible experience, and am relieved I didn't have the same scenario! We came here several days ago for lunch based on a recommendation by our tour guide. I was both looking forward to ordering in French and also anxious about it. I took French when I was in high school and still enjoy reading French but when it comes to speaking, I'm definitely not fluent! But I had no need to fear, as the waiters all speak English better than I do French! It was a fun experience anyway. The waiters/waitresses were helpful, though no one checked on us during the meal once we were served. On to the setting and the food: it was a beautiful day and the restaurant had plentiful outdoor seating. The table set up was cute, from the water jug to the little dish of pretzels to the menu. The ambience is casual and relaxing. We ordered a fish and chips and a salmon. All were delicious! The salmon was tender and hot, and the veggies were flavorful. We also received a basket of baguette. I love baguette! It didn't come with butter though---not sure if eating it plain is the French way of eating it. Great restaurant. Food was good (for the most part) and the sauces were delicious. The normand burger was super spicy with their mustard so beware. The steak (with pepper sauce) was great. Our party also had the ham and cheese omelette which was average. It was very thin and pretty basic. It was fine for a 60 year old woman but I don't think it'd be satisfying for an adult male American who really likes eating. It was a Monday afternoon and there weren't many choices. We popped in and I ordered the French onion soup and he ordered the fish and chips. We also ordered a bottle of Merlot at a fantastic price! Unfortunately, The soup was really bad and bland and even after i doused it with salt and pepper, still wasn't edible. The waiter said "the chef already made this so you can order something else but you will pay for both, nothing is free." It was €9. I thought to myself, is €9 worth a bad review?...I guess so. The food was decent - nothing special, but not terrible. We've definitely had better at less cost that this on our trips to France. But that is to be expected for a touristy spot. What turned me off, however, was the condescending French server attitude. I made it very clear to her that I don't know French, but was trying to learn and get better at it. Yet she continued to ridicule my pronunciations, even to the point of repeating them to the French folks at the tables next to me and laughing at my feeble efforts. Then she sent another chap over to handle our check (never seen him before) and he proceeds to attempt to convert our bill from euros to dollars and acted as if he was doing a favor to us (all the whole charging a terrible exchange rate and then a few on top of that). I put an immediate stop to that and had him rerun it in euros, for which he was not pleased at all. I have to say ... we went to this restaurant on Rick Steves' recommendation, and he seriously let us down this time. This is probably the worse meal we have ever had at at restaurant. My son had chicken strips and fries. The chicken strips tasted like they were old. I had the Cesar salad, it had the same chicken strips. The plate was to tiny to even cut them on. The bathroom was not clean and needs repairs. I stayed at the attached hotel - Hotel Reine Mathilde so I was a little nervous eating dinner here as well - I felt like I should have gone out and explored! I'm glad I stayed close, however, and not just because it was February and the weather was rainy and frigid. The restaurant is not super fancy, but the waitstaff was really pleasant and spoke enough english to make it easy on me being that it was my first night in France and my first time giving the language a real-life shot. The waiter giggled a bit at my attempts but seemed appreciative that I tried and even spoke very slow French with me instead of English so I could practice. The menu was easy to understand and really, if you order the right things - it was amazing. Listen, you're in a small French town, not Paris- so maybe go ahead and order a local specialty rather than a pizza? Live a little! I got a duck confit au gratin dish - duck confit covered in a layer of potatoes coated with a cream sauce (Normandy is famous for their cream sauces). IT WAS GLORIOUS. Simple cooking and fresh ingredients - when in Rome, people! I should have come here my second night instead of venturing, but now I'll just have to dream of my wonderful food and experience here. read more

Sitting outside in the glorious sunshine... We enjoyed lunch of a salad with warmed goat cheese on toast. My companion had the Rustic Burger. Amaaaazing! The salad included crispy and tender ( bib?) lettuce. The cherry tomatoes were vine ripened and oh so sweet. All the flavors and textures combined to make this the most scrumptious salad. We returned for dinner and both were delighted with our entries. Steak for one of us and chicken for the other. Everything is plated in the most attractive way. Service is excellent; the staff is accommodating, friendly, efficient and knowledgable and gives yet you the space to enjoy your dinning companions. Food is very fresh and vegetables are tender, not overcooked. Unfortunately, we were much too full for desert, but managed a cappuccino which was the BEST MOST FLAVORFUL i have ever had. We had a decent dinner. The service was good, food was decent, ambiance was okay. Nothing memorable but good enough.

We stopped at Le Garde Manager because they have a nice patio and serve food fairly late (we arrived to dinner around 9pm as many nearby spots were closing).The menu had plenty of local specialties we were excited to try as well. The service was good, which is the only reason for two stars instead of one. We wanted to like the food, but we finally had to admit it was terrible. I started with the oysters, which were not great compared to others in the region and very dirty. I kept getting little bits of shell and grime in my mouth. I didn't finish them. I also ordered the shrimp with risotto in a cheese sauce. The shrimp were overcooked to rubber and the risotto was full of hard, undercooked pieces. The sauce was not bad. My husband ordered the beef tartare, which we both usually enjoy. Both the french fries and the tartare were just awful. I didn't try the green salad but my husband said it was equally disappointing. Neither of us finished our main courses and nothing tasted fresh. We did enjoy the cheese plate dessert and cider well enough. Maybe because they dont need to be fresh? Overall, a poor comparison to similarly priced restaurants in the area. read more
