Don't e fooled by this literal hole in the wall. This meal is one of the most unique & best you'll find in Cannes

This is the best restaurant in Cannes...and probably the surrounding area. It's truly a one of a kind dining experience. Trust me, if you're in Cannes, you've GOT to try and get a table. However, I stress "try." This place rightfully books up quite fast. The restaurant is tiny & very popular. If you're in town during the festival, and you didn't make a reservation a month in advance...good luck getting in. The menu is fixed. You start out with oven roasted bread & Prosciutto covered melon. Then, you get the most amazing basket of fresh veggies and 2 dips for their take on the salad. This basket alone makes the restaurant worth your time. If you're not in awe of what is placed in front of you, you're blind. Then, you have the choice of steak, whole chicken, or lamb for your main course. All of these are cooked over a tiny fire in the kitchen. Then, you have an assortment of desserts to top it all off. Maschou is a hole in the wall. But the food is the among the most amazing you'll ever have. It will be a meal you will remember for a long time.

My favorite restaurant. Anywhere. Ever. Cute, romantic, perfect setting. Staff is fantastic. The menu is focused (some say limited but I think it's ok to do what you do perfectly). Extensive wine list. The salad basket of fresh vegetables is the best thing. Fresh & delicious. But don't eat too much because you'll want to save room for the beef. I can not describe how good the chocolate mousse is (there's got to be a secret ingredient, maybe seltzer water??) Make your reservation early, they fill up!

Incredible. Fabulous atmosphere- we sat at a small table right on the edge of a tiny cute street and huge portions. Everything we had was delicious but I'd suggest the beef tenderloin over the chicken or lambchops- we tried all three and that was my favorite.

This was our first time in the city and it was a great experience. We have stumbled on this place through Yelp, and it was really a right choice. The staff were welcoming and helpful, the overall feel was cosy. The food was served well prepared and presented, their 50 year tradition is still maintained by presenting a vegetable basket where "do-it-yourself" salad is made! I recommend the veal, and the baby chicken options. Also, the chocolate mousse was spectacular!

i hate superlatives like "the best". that said, maschou is excellent and a good bet for a satisfying dinner, especially if you are with a special person. it is very romantic. the dark stone walls are only lit by candles and the glimmer from the fireplace. as soon as you sit down, you get fresh home-made bread with sour cream dip to keep your palate occupied while you select the main course. it won't take long because you only have a choice between beef rib, rack of lamb, or chicken (which is actually a young cockerel) all of them roasted on an open fire with herbs de provence. for those who insist on being vegetarian, you can get a salmon steak or an omelette. all are served with a baked potato. according to the information i have, if you are a hard-core vegan, they will even serve you a plate of stir-fried vegetables. however, the main attraction of this restaurant is the seared beef rib, sliced and posed on a cutting board with the rib intact. the last time i looked it was italian simmental and it is the tastiest, most succulent and tender piece of beef you will find in cannes. be sure to order it medium-rare, which is "saignante" in french, unless you like it "bleu", which is an american "rare". if you like your meat well-done, you shouldn't even be here. it would be a shame to miss out on all the flavor of real beef. they have a short, but sweet wine list that represents the major regions of france, in the three colors, from burgundy to bordeaux to provence, the rhone and loire valleys, and a beaujolais. so, you then get the starter course of prosciutto, or bresaola, and cantaloupe, followed by the famous basket of fresh, raw vegetables with a warm anchovy dip, known in provençal as "bagna cauda". this is, after all, a provençal restaurant, for which the name "mas-chou" is code, "mas" meaning house and "chou" meaning cute. for those who can't stand anchovies (i presume that anything is possible) they also serve a vinaigrette sauce. there is just about every type of garden vegetable imaginable in the basket which takes up quite a bit of space on the table. just dig in with your hands (it's permitted) and dip to your heart's content. this basket of vegetables is supposed to be the reason that the owner couldn't open an equivalent restaurant in beverly hills, where he was invited to collaborate with the owner of the star studded ma maison. they evidently couldn't get a health certificate for a basket of raw vegetables that people were free to pick through with their hands. a great loss for beverly hills, if you ask me, but then they've also banned foie gras in california, which is pretty much akin to shooting yourself in the gastronomical foot. anyway! at the end of all that, there will be one more choice to make for dessert. if you want to really play french, you will finish up with a coffee, which automatically means expresso (never with milk or cream) and some kind of "digestif", such as armagnac, cognac, marc de provence, or limoncello. don't worry, there are cabs waiting at the bottom of the hill, so go ahead, relax and enjoy yourself.

We started with the burrata appetizer which was creamy perfection. For our mains we had the Prime rib and the Lamb chops. Both were cooked how we liked. They were seasoned well and had excellent flavor. We had a delicious side of creamy whipped potatoes. The meat had an excessive amount of fat and gristle and it seemed that half of what we got was left behind on the plate. For dessert we split a tiramisu which wasn't tiramisu, instead it was marscapone with a Carmel sauce and a cinnamon crunch topping. It was good but not what we expected. We sat directly in front of the grill which was cool watching the grill master at work. Waitstaff were very nice. Overall, I've had better steaks and chops.

So happy that prime rib was on the menu, but when I ordered it, it came more of a rib eye which is typically my favorite. But I got teased with the "prime rib." Generous portions; see pictures. Cooked to order, but it was not cooked medium rare IMO. After a few rare bites, I asked for the chef to throw it back on the grill. It was still too rare when it came back, but by then, I was just too hungry. Lastly and most importantly, it was tough, like how can a rare steak be tough?!? I had the hardest time cutting it even with a steak knife. The rice with teriyaki sauce was good. I might try this at home next time. The veggies were okay. My wife got a chicken plate - Again, generous portions and cooked to perfection. Tender and juicy. My wife enjoyed her salad (very bitter) and veggies. She gave her meal 5 stars. Oh, and my wife had so many leftovers she will not need lunch tomorrow. Ambiance - Got a great table next to the chef. Then the heat from the oven was too much for my wife. I guess they noticed it and moved us a few tables back. Thank you. Service - Not sure if we got here too early (7pm), but our waitress was late coming to work. It took forever for the waitress to take our order. But she did come back several times to check on us. I had to ask for extra water, etc. Price - 54 Euros, $63US; reasonably priced for a steak house. Owner Comment - Congrats on all your success.

You could throw your chair in the fire, a donkey rode through the dining area and fireworks went off while a duo sang romantic Spanish tunes. The pirate would cut the top of the wine bottle off with a flourish of his cutlass and pour you a glass. Of course the food was great too. When we arrived in Menton we were told the restaurant had closed down and the property was for sale. We drove to the restaurant anyways and were thrilled to see it was still open by the Pirates son Ricardo who was closing up for the evening. And there was a menu with very reasonable prices. We made reservations for the following Friday for me and my teenage son and daughter. The location by the sea is unbeatable. We parked out front on the street in a reserved spot around 8:30. There was a couple there before us and we could see their shrimp and sardines (a specialty) were on the grill as we walked in. We started with sardines and shrimp, both delicious. My son had the grilled duck leg that was fall off the bone delicious. My lobster was grilled to perfection with an accompaniment of nicely spiced grilled eggplant and red pepper in olive oil. Our ice cream dessert was a perfect finish to a memorable evening even though we didn't throw our chairs into the fire.

The chef himself even pitched in with helping serve, totally in sync with the owner. These two amazing guys totally changed my and my wife's perspective about how other restaurants are run - especially when tipping here is more of a courtesy and in the states many restaurants just add 18% on to your bill for gratuity regardless of the service you got. I left the owner just 10 euros and he was so thankful and graciously declined but promised he'd give it to the kitchen staff when we insisted that we just had to appreciate them with a tip. Unreal, awesome, classy, can't wait to return.
