Le Maschou may be the most overrated restaurant in Cannes. My friend recommended it to me since it's famous. However, the restaurant was completely absorbed by their "fame" and forgot to serve a passable dinner. My boyfriend and I paid a premium for: 1) Negligent service (they tried to rush us out of there the minute we sat down, yet took a very long time to bring us our drinks) 2) Overcooked food (we requested medium rare for the salmon and steak. We received well done on both.) 3) Uncomfortable environment (we sat outside, despite requesting indoor dining, where the street was extremely narrow and people were too close for comfort) I will never return and seriously recommend you to avoid this place too! (also I originally thought the vegetable basket was a fun gimmick. But now I regret paying so much money to make my own salad and season the steak myself. I cry.) read more

This is the best restaurant in Cannes...and probably the surrounding area. It's truly a one of a kind dining experience. Trust me, if you're in Cannes, you've GOT to try and get a table. However, I stress "try." This place rightfully books up quite fast. The restaurant is tiny & very popular. If you're in town during the festival, and you didn't make a reservation a month in advance...good luck getting in. The menu is fixed. You start out with oven roasted bread & Prosciutto covered melon. Then, you get the most amazing basket of fresh veggies and 2 dips for their take on the salad. This basket alone makes the restaurant worth your time. If you're not in awe of what is placed in front of you, you're blind. Then, you have the choice of steak, whole chicken, or lamb for your main course. All of these are cooked over a tiny fire in the kitchen. Then, you have an assortment of desserts to top it all off. My favorite restaurant. Anywhere. Ever. Cute, romantic, perfect setting. Staff is fantastic. The menu is focused (some say limited but I think it's ok to do what you do perfectly). Extensive wine list. The salad basket of fresh vegetables is the best thing. Fresh & delicious. But don't eat too much because you'll want to save room for the beef. I can not describe how good the chocolate mousse is (there's got to be a secret ingredient, maybe seltzer water??) Make your reservation early, they fill up! read more

This was our first time in the city and it was a great experience. We have stumbled on this place through Yelp, and it was really a right choice. The staff were welcoming and helpful, the overall feel was cosy. The food was served well prepared and presented, their 50 year tradition is still maintained by presenting a vegetable basket where "do-it-yourself" salad is made! I recommend the veal, and the baby chicken options. Also, the chocolate mousse was spectacular! read more

Recommended by a good friend, Le Maschou was a special experience in the heart of the most adorbale street in Cannes. Reservations are a must and you can choose between the early seating at 7:30 or late seating at 10:30. We had one of very few tables outside, which was perfect for people watching. You are served prosciutto and melon and then the largest crudité you've ever seen. It comes with a few different dips to begin the meal and warm grilled bread. It is a set menu but you do have the choice of chicken, beef or a lamb for your main. The chicken was actually a smaller portion, which worked out well as I was so full from the starters! Lamb was wonderful too. The set menu is 49 euros a person, which seems very reasonable for the quality and quantity of food we received. The chocolate mousse for dessert was heavenly as was the Apple tarte. A must when in Cannes! read more

i hate superlatives like "the best". that said, maschou is excellent and a good bet for a satisfying dinner, especially if you are with a special person. it is very romantic. the dark stone walls are only lit by candles and the glimmer from the fireplace. as soon as you sit down, you get fresh home-made bread with sour cream dip to keep your palate occupied while you select the main course. it won't take long because you only have a choice between beef rib, rack of lamb, or chicken (which is actually a young cockerel) all of them roasted on an open fire with herbs de provence. for those who insist on being vegetarian, you can get a salmon steak or an omelette. all are served with a baked potato. according to the information i have, if you are a hard-core vegan, they will even serve you a plate of stir-fried vegetables. however, the main attraction of this restaurant is the seared beef rib, sliced and posed on a cutting board with the rib intact. the last time i looked it was italian simmental and it is the tastiest, most succulent and tender piece of beef you will find in cannes. be sure to order it medium-rare, which is "saignante" in french, unless you like it "bleu", which is an american "rare". if you like your meat well-done, you shouldn't even be here. it would be a shame to miss out on all the flavor of real beef. they have a short, but sweet wine list that represents the major regions of france, in the three colors, from burgundy to bordeaux to provence, the rhone and loire valleys, and a beaujolais. so, you then get the starter course of prosciutto, or bresaola, and cantaloupe, followed by the famous basket of fresh, raw vegetables with a warm anchovy dip, known in provençal as "bagna cauda". this is, after all, a provençal restaurant, for which the name "mas-chou" is code, "mas" meaning house and "chou" meaning cute. for those who can't stand anchovies (i presume that anything is possible) they also serve a vinaigrette sauce. there is just about every type of garden vegetable imaginable in the basket which takes up quite a bit of space on the table. just dig in with your hands (it's permitted) and dip to your heart's content. this basket of vegetables is supposed to be the reason that the owner couldn't open an equivalent restaurant in beverly hills, where he was invited to collaborate with the owner of the star studded ma maison. they evidently couldn't get a health certificate for a basket of raw vegetables that people were free to pick through with their hands. a great loss for beverly hills, if you ask me, but then they've also banned foie gras in california, which is pretty much akin to shooting yourself in the gastronomical foot. anyway! at the end of all that, there will be one more choice to make for dessert. if you want to really play french, you will finish up with a coffee, which automatically means expresso (never with milk or cream) and some kind of "digestif", such as armagnac, cognac, marc de provence, or limoncello. don't worry, there are cabs waiting at the bottom of the hill, so go ahead, relax and enjoy yourself. read more

Don't go!! The worst food I ever had. It's not a restaurant it's a joke. For starters they give you basket with vegetables that you need to cut and make your own salad!! I ordered a chicken for main course and it was joke again. Small baby chicken that I can be in every supermarket for €10! Just ate here with my wife. A very interesting experience to say the least. Some of the staff speak English, but mostly french and some Italian. The dinner is a set menu, you pick between lamb, beef, and chicken. We had beef and chicken and beef. They were both GREAT. I would probably give them 5 stars based off the dinner alone. Before that ever comes out you get fresh bread and butter and some kind of sour cream concoction that is pretty good. You can use it with the bread and with the potatoes that come with dinner later. The odd part is the salad. They bring out this enormous basket that takes up half the table, it is full of whole vegetables. They are quite fresh but..What am I supposed to do with this? It's like a novelty sized salad. See the picture I've added. It seems like a joke. It just rubs me the wrong way as this is an expensive place and I have a higher expectation for everything. Beyond that the atmosphere is beautiful. The service is great, this place is small so make a reservation. read more

Restaurant Le Maschou is a unique experience not to be missed! On a recent vacation to Cannes, my parents and I stopped into Le Maschou on our last night, and it was certainly memorable. He had a reservation at 7:30, and we were the very first table to arrive. The inside is very, very small and quite dark (in a cozy way, of course!). The menu is prefix, and you have the option of chicken, steak, or lamb for your main course. The three of us choose different proteins so we could try everything. First they start you off with bread, butter, and fromage blac, then they bring out a tray of prociutto and melon. Next they brought out our "salad" which was really a GIANT basket of fresh vegetables to make your own salads. This basket was so huge, that it left my parents and I wondering if the waiter was joking with us when he set it down, or was coming back to prepare something tableside. But the whole basket was for us, and it was all very fresh and delicious! Next came our main courses, which were all simply grilled over their wood burning oven. Everything was absolutely delicious. To my surprise, my favorite was the chicken, which was a whole small hen. I usually don't order chicken in restaurants, but this one was so juicy and well-seasoned that I even liked it better than the steak and the lamb! Finally, when we were done with that, we had a choice of dessert. We shared the chocolate mousse, lemon tart, and creme caramel, which were all very good. The portions here are absolutely huge, so make sure you come with an appetite! The service here is friendly, and they give each of the ladies a rose as they leave the restaurant, which was very charming. Definitely worth visiting if you are in Cannes, but its a popular spot, so make a reservation beforehand! read more

This is the best restaurant in Cannes, in my experience. I come to Cannes two or three times a year for the exhibitions. This place is usually booked solid, and it is very tiny, so book early. It is truly outstanding: rustic French country fare, made in a wood burning oven. It is located on the main tourist street which is full of mediocre restaurants. This one is a gem. Tip: if Maschou is overbooked, ask the waiter or maitre d' to recommend another restaurant. They have steered me to four other very good places nearby. read more

Excellent dining experience. Call ahead for reservations. It's a cave-like setting with packed tables where there is no menu, only the choice of your meat course. Our first course was the bagna calda (large basket of fresh vegetables and a hard boiled egg) with two tasty dressings to choose between. So we built our own salads. Second course was fresh, grilled lamb and chicken. Third was dessert - fresh peach salad and a fruit tart. Wines were excellent. I'd go there again! read more

Bar none, this is my favourite restaurant in Cannes. The ambiance is incredible and the small space feels welcoming. The service is impeccable and warm. The food is simple yet superb.
