Came to Le Progres for a nightcap for our first night in Paris. I found myself at a table by the window in here, lost in this beautiful girl's big grey eyes across the table from me, locked in a profound conversation. I was so locked in, in fact, that when the French waitress came over and asked what we wanted, I was beyond unprepared. I had just drank gallons of red wine in Croatia, and needed a day off from my beloved vino. There was a slight language barrier, so I didn't want to ask too much as I don't speak French and feel so disrespectful trying to have a long conversation in English in a foreign country. I asked if they had any tequila on the rocks, and she said "margarita?" "That sounds great," I responded. The last thing I wanted was a margarita, but sometimes you gotta put it on the game card. Solid French restaurant near Sacre Coeur, 4 minutes walk from Abbesses metro station. The restaurant was recommended by an art gallery owner in Montmartre, where we had spent most of the late afternoon. We were seated a few minutes after we arrived at the only indoor table available. They had outdoor tables but we chose not to sit there because of all the smoking patrons. Once we had settled in, we took a look at the drinks and food menus, pleasantly surprised to find that they were in English. We ordered drinks and appetizers, plus one entrée to share. We were the only tourists there (all others were locals), but the servers were friendly and attentive and spoke excellent English. The drinks arrived quickly, and the food soon afterward. My wife loved her amaretto, and our daughter her Limonade. I happily sipped my Rebelle (wheat) beer as we shared the Camembert (perfectly baked), Guinea fowl stew with mashed potatoes (superb), and bone marrow (my favorite, but disliked by the missus and kids) family-style. The only dish I didn't get to try was the vegetable tart. We finished up with two delightful desserts - crème brûlée and chocolate mousse. Total bill was a little over €100. Bathrooms were adequate. Lovely restaurant in Montmartre area. Prices were good. I got a gratinated eggplant and my bf got steak tartare. I really liked the ricotta and pesto combo on the eggplant! We had a really nice server who was happy to speak English with us. We sat on the sidewalk. Nice place to people watch too! read more

On the hunt for a restroom in Montmatre and a hankering for something sweet, I stopped in for an evening drink. The special was the Pomelo Spritz which boasted some of my favorite ingredients. Absolutely delicious. Service was awesome and price was great. The vibe is certainly Parisian Cafe. They had a menu but I didn't try the food. Very nice people here. We came just before noon but they still seated us and took drink orders while we waited for the kitchen to open. The drinks were reasonable in price and very tasty. In addition, I was very impressed with their hamburger. I felt like it even tasted better then our favorite burger joint back home in Texas. The steak was the other dish that we had. Though I asked for medium, it actually came out medium. Usually its medium rare... In either case, they drenched that little sucker in butter and it really didn't matter to me whether or not it was medium or medium rare at that point. Great service and great food... I can't ask for more in a touristy area like Montmartre. read more

Came here due to a couple other restaurants nearby being booked up. Wasn't bad. We had the escargot, which was a little bland and could have used a little more garlic or basil. I had a steak (special of the day) and my wife had the duck confit. My steak wasn't bad. My wife loved her duck, but I thought it was pretty average. Prices a little high compared to a couple other bistros/brasseries we've been to in Paris this week. Service was better though! Overall not bad, and worth it if a) in the area and b) the other restaurants in the immediate area are full. read more

My wife and I had taken the metro up to Sacre Cour for a little sightseeing when the weather turned foul and we dove for cover inside Le Progrès. We were seated quickly and attended to efficiently. It is quite a lovely little place with a great view of an intersection leading up to Sacre Cour. We each just had a cappuccino while the weather cleared up, but the waiter was kind and patient with our broken French. Like most, the hike to Sacré Cœur and subsequent Montmartre wanderings on a rainy day literally compels you to stop for something warm and rich. This was perfect. Decent wine selection, tasty risotto with shrimp and scallops though risotto itself was slightly bland and required some self-peppering. The seafood was cooked to perfection. After a quick sightseeing trip to Sacre Couer high atop Montmartre we descended into Lower Montmartre toward Pigalle and found the little brasserie Le Progrès across the street from another one--Café Chappe, and also from a pizzeria and a charcuterie place. The €18.50 lunch menu enticed us with its deal of appetizer (they call it entree) plus main or main plus dessert for that price. The two of us got parsnip soup and onion quiche as starters and roast pork with chorizo, potato gratin; and steak frites with bleu cheese sauce and a past its prime mesclun salad. Other than the salad everything was pretty good--but somewhat under-seasoned and lacking sparkle. We ordered one glass of beer and a large bottle of sparkling water. The tab was €57. Not bad for a meal in Montmartre but next time we will look around some more and try a different place. Service is competent although the server challenged my claim that the salad wasn't fresh-he asked how our food was and I was honest. The mushy, blackened lettuce pieces were left on my plate as evidence, for god's sake. The dining room is bright and pretty and the location is on a vibrant street in Montmartre. You could do worse but you could also do much better. read more

We stopped in here for breakfast several times during our visit to Paris. We enjoyed the breakfast that came with fresh, warm bread, jam, orange juice, and a coffee or hot chocolate. It was a nice place to slowly wake up and people watch. The young woman who was working there in the mornings was very nice, despite my french being terrible. She remembered what we had come in for previously and asked if we'd like the same thing, so she saved me the struggle of trying to order again. We really enjoyed our lunch here before trekking to the Sacré-Cœur. We ordered two entrees from the lunch board and 12 escargos. Everything was very tasty. Our favorite were the ribs, beautifully sauced with perfectly-cooked fresh veggies. The meal wasn't cheap and it was really hot sitting inside (heat wave in Paris and outside tables were taken) but the service was friendly (by Paris-standard) and the beers ice-cold. They had a long list of other drinks also. I highly recommend this cute little place for when in Montmartre. read more

Yum! We popped in here for lunch after we'd ogled Le Mur de Je T'Aime and Sacre Coeur. The reason we came in is because they had escargots on the menu. My sister had never tried them and I said she needed to. So, obviously, we ordered escargots. We also shared a meal which started with an intense salad with smoked fish. It was good, but quite strong. For the main, we had a crispy skinned white flaky soft fish, which was incredible. It was the best fish we'd ever had and it was drizzled in some sort of wine-based cream sauce. It was delicious. After our five mile hike from our hotel up and to the Sacre Coeur we popped in for a bite to eat. We sat outside enjoying the perfect views of Montmartre. The waitress was helpful with recommendations from the lunch board. The gazpacho and goat cheese Apéritifs are outstanding here, steaks were a bit overdone even after ordering them rare, and the french-fries were perfectly crisp and non-oily. Like most we stopped in after hiking Montmartre. It was exactly what we wanted. Our daughter had very tasty crepes. My wife's salade niçoise was perfect. I had the special of the day which was a steak au poivre. The cut was a rump steak that was served medium rare and matched wonderfully with a rich, peppery sauce and crispy frites. It is painful to leave Paris. I figure if I share with you some of what is wonderful it might keep me connected. I spent most of my food and drink money here (also Pain Pain- the lovely blue bakery around the corner with exquisite quiche and adorable prices). The menu is exciting and everything is delicious and beautifully plated. My favorite part is the staff (I wish I would have gotten their names). I watched school kids come in for a drink of water and an elderly woman have her espresso stirred when it was too difficult. Le Progrès is under new ownership as of the last 5 months, so any older reviews are meaningless. Paris has my heart as does this little brasserie. read more

It might be a total exception but we really had an awful experience at "Le Progres". To put my review in perspective, I have never written a negative review of anything or had any quarrel at any restaurant (or shop) ever before (and I am not in my 20s). However, this experience was so bad that it ended in a "lively" argument with the manager. The waitress was nice all along and the food OK (but not better than OK). However, after forgetting our initial order (for which she offered the first glass of wine which is nice), she also forgot our desert and left us alone for 40 minutes while chatting and having a cigarette outside. We therefore decided to ask for the bill. After waiting in line for 10 minutes to get our credit card processed, the guy at the counter decided to allow one guy to get in front of us and then another one (while all he had to do was process our card which takes 30 sec anyway while the other guys had to sort out a huge bill). Anyway, at this point, I told him I wanted to pay and this all went downhill from there, with us leaving after a very vocal "discussion" with the manager.
