We had the onion soup and with the caramelized onions, the bread the cheese and extra bread to dip! It was a meal in its self! We also go the escargot 2 of the 3 days we were there. And let me tell you the extra bread to soak up the parsley butter was the key! We also got a bottle of local champagne each time And each one was so amazing and delicious! The service was amazing!!!!! The wind knocked over my glass about 5 minutes after they opened the bottle and poured it. They opened a whole new bottle filled my new glass and topped off my friends glass free of charge! We sat outside each time to watch the adorable town center and see the people walking by!

The open air garden setting on a very muggy evening, made this our first choice for our first meal. "Le Plaisir Commence Ici" (Pleasure Starts Here) is marked on all the wine glasses at Côté Cuisine in Reims, and it was a marvelous introduction to eating my first meal in Reims. There are several menu options from 32-50 Euros ($36-56 USD), with prices climbing upwards depending on how many drinks you wanted with your meal. I chose the 39 Euro menu of starter, main and one glass of an apéro and one glass of wine. My friend didn't like the set menu options so she ordered a starter and a main à la carte and just one glass of wine for about the same price. If you reserve with The Fork, you can also get a 20% reduction on 2 courses ordered à la carte. Service in the Summer will be very slow with limited (and temporary) waitstaff, so reserve ahead and be patient, especially if you want the garden seats. My friend ordered the rabbit terrine and enjoyed it tremendously. It was obviously freshly made and the flavors were nicely married. The portion is very big, so this would be a great starter to share if you are not very hungry. I love confit gizzard salad and I can only find it in France, so I almost always order it when I see it on the menu, and this version with pomegranate seeds, blueberries, red onions, and radishes tossed in a fruity vinaigrette, was one of the best I've eaten. The portion was so generous that I could have easily eaten just this as my meal! My friend chose one of the specials of the day for her main course, parmentier, a baked meat dish with mashed potatoes on top. She said the meat was a bit dry but the flavor was good. Once again this plate was a large portion, and since this was a hearty dish to eat in the heat and there are no doggie bags in France, make sure you bring your appetite! My friend's parmentier came with a side salad that was quite lovely, but she didn't get around to eating it after her very large portions of starter and main. I ordered the sardines with a spinach soufflé for my main and unfortunately the sauce could not save the overcooked fish, however, the spinach soufflé was lovely, and after my large salad, I was quite content to just eat my vegetables on this plate. My menu came with a dessert, and even though we really didn't have room, we somehow found a place to fit in some summer fruit and sorbet to end the night on a sweet note :)

The special of the night was a kidney stew, we didn't order it but I wish we had as I saw pots and pots of going by our table to all the locals. For starters the risotto and ravioli were fabulous! The local cheeses used had so much flavor and added a great degree of richness. The duck breast was cooked perfectly, as was the sea breem. The chorizo was a nice touch but it was a bit overpowering for the delicate fish. I was intrigued but the confit pork breast which is why I ordered it. It was melt in your mouth for sure, and had a very soft flavor which I wasn't expecting. I am used to a pork dish with a thick fat layer having a great sear to the fat so that it is crunchy and delicious but this one did not. It was the style I'm sure but it made me not want to the eat the pork fat which I usually find so delicious. We ordered desserts even though we were so full. The fig tart was perfection. They were at the peak of ripeness and the buttery shell was a great compliment. Chocolate tart was good, the crunchies on top weren't really my style but my friends liked it quite a lot. The Paris dessert was reminiscent of a stuffed eclair and I could appreciate that. We also had one of the best bottles of Cote du Rhône I have ever tasted. If you are in Reims this is definitely a place to try and get into! Very reasonable also considering we got 6 entrees, 4 starters, 5 desserts, a bottle of red and a bottle of sparkling along with 3 large bottles of wine for 400€.

A quick survey of Tripadvisor a few days in advance had most of the top-ranked restaurants booked out. It's possibly because Tuesday is a holiday, Armistice Day, and people are taking off Monday and doing the 'pont' (bridge). Tripadvisor in France partners with the Fork, and it seems a pretty canny business, to be able to tell me on any given night which restaurant will take my reservation. I worry about them shutting out the restaurants that don't work with them, but in general, I have terrible trouble trying to make reservations in France. Places are always booked up, and I still need to train myself to try to organise at least a week in advance... In any case, Au Cul de Poule was free to take our Saturday reservation and I was amused by the name. I didn't look it up to find that the bottom or tail end of a hen is somehow the name for a mixing bowl. We had an interesting walk through Reims, about 25 minutes from the train station, to find 'At the mixing bowl'. I much preferred our own previous translation: Chicken Butt. The restaurant is bright yet cosy, with a theme of almost electric blue. The marvelous thing right off is they have a huge selection of champagne from the region, big names and small names. I was completely lost but asked for a suggestion for a cheaper one, somewhere around 50 euros, and the very efficient waitress suggested this one for 43 euros. It was dry as a champagne should be, and we loved it. We opted for the three course formula which at 30 euros is really, truly a great deal. The menu is a twist on the bistro: familiar items but with a twist. We found each dish not too heavy and quite interesting. My started was a buttery stew of escargot and mushrooms; S's was a clam risotto which he liked a lot. His main was 'dos de lieu' which I think is hake, in a foie gras sauce. A nice texture, but he felt it was a little bland. It was served with a serving of chopped endives, pleasantly sweet. I adored my main: 'poitrine de cochon' sounded to me like the chest of pork... but is actually pork belly, cooked for 24 hours. With an absolutely delicious mash and thick sauce, it was dee-licious. Desserts were impressive. Mine was a mille-feuille, which they called instead 500 feuille. Freshly baked pastry with a very light pistachio cream, raspberries and berry (or plum?) sorbet. Visually appealing, light and not too sweet. S's dessert, something like Paris-Ile de Ré, was also a pastry filled with crème anglaise, salted caramel ice cream. Oh and more cream.
