Pork Meatball Bahn Mi (with pate added)
Niki V.

Friendly staff and fire bahn mi's ! Definitely hit the spot and would 10/10 recommend. Oceanside park next door for a meal with a view ;)

Owned by a kind Vietnamese woman. We talked to her as she tended to the basil she grows herself. Cash only. Heads up. She pointed us to an ATM in the gas station a 5 min walk away The breakfast banh mi had ketchup and bacon. I'm not strict for authenticity, but imo doesn't go great. The pork lemongrass banh mi was much better, worth adding the pate

As seen on DDD! It is truly a little lot off the road next to the park entrance. There is a pizza truck and coffee truck there too that may or may not be open. We ordered the lemon grass chicken bahn mi, and it lived up to the reputation! $9 in August of 23. All of the components were treated right, thus creating a symphony on the palette. One of the best foods I've had on the island visit fir sure.. We could have sat at the covered tables but instead headed just up the road to Coconut Island. Would I go back? Yes! Probably get some spring rolls too.

Cute little food truck off the beaten track. Saw this on DDD. We arrived after the lunch rush after 2pm and we were the only ones there. The lady in the truck was friendly and there are a few tables under cover with a cool fish painting. We walked from our hotel nearby. The spring rolls were great. Pork lemongrass and bacon pate banh mi sandwiches were both really tasty too, albeit a little spicy (we asked for medium but they were HOT). The Thai ice tea with coconut milk helped cool it down. A filling, cheap lunch!

Bored of studying, I went browsing for food places on Yelp and stumbled upon this page. Another banh mi place! Especially with the option of having pate (liver)! I definitely had to try it out. It's located next to the Ponds restaurant (left of it) and across of Big Island Motors in a vacated lot. I doubt there would ever be any parking trouble in a big lot with only one food truck present. When I went up to the truck, I didn't see any other menu besides the banh mi menu but there were a couple of people off to the side eating something similar to a plate lunch. But my friend and I were mainly there for the banh mi, which worked out fine. We both ordered the pork lemongrass banh mi in addition to a chicken lemongrass banh mi and a breakfast banh mi for two of our friends. We also got three thai teas. The owner was super nice in accommodating to our order requests. Because she was a one-man worker, my friend and I waited on the side, admiring the cute little campsite set up. The sandwiches looked filling! I was super excited to try it after taking the mandatory pic of the foods. Not a fan of parsley, so it took a while before I got into my first bite. The lemongrass marinade was a really saucy kind of marinade, which I didn't expect when biting into my sandwich. It was almost like BBQ sauce (not the taste). The bite didn't wow me, but it was definitely good. The pate accompanied the meat and sauce well. But it wasn't a really memorable experience. I really liked how generous the portions of meat and pate were. The same went for the thai tea. Large size cup of thai tea with coconut cream. That was really unique. I don't think I mixed it well enough because the first half of the drink was really good with a blend of coconut and tea but the last half was all weird coconut liquid with barely any tea... Loved the portions tho! Seeing that the owner is such a nice hard worker, I definitely recommend checking this place to support local businesses. The price is super reasonable too!

Ordered the spicy pork banh mi and spring rolls. Wasn't too impressed with the banh mi and it definitely had no spicyness. The bread was risky which was the highlight but the pork looked like pieces of steak and want seasoned very well. The spring rolls were doggy and not very flavorful. For the price is rather go to kings for a proper banh mi but that's me.

Very tasty Bahn Mi! The women working were so sweet as well. Would recommend a stop at this quaint little truck.

She moved to the slot right between Ponds Restaurant and Kuhio Kalanianaole Park. There's parking right in front of the truck. Chicken and pork banh mi was the bomb!! The grill pork and chicken was so perfect, with lots of pickles, cucumbers and tomatoes. Quality is amazing. I can eat this everyday really.

Bahmi was delish with all the fixings. Get the pate. Spring roll pate was yum. I liked those more than the bun noodle dish.

Not only is the food great but the service was as well. We waited a little bit because it was packed and as we're waiting we got to talking story with an auntie that was also waiting. Long story short she ended up joining us and we had an awesome time! Pho Viet is an awesome place in Hilo. It feels warm and inviting. Everyone was very friendly.

First off, any place my wife wants to go to several times means it must be at the top of the food chain! Pho Viet is located in back of Garden Exchange. Apparently there are two pho places so look for Pho Viet - on the right side. Be careful when walking from Haili street as there are sketchy people hanging out on both sides of the road. (What happened Hilo??). Unfortunately there is hardly any parking so you probably have to walk to the restaurant from away. When you go inside the place is pretty small like 6-8 tables but it's constantly filled with people. They all look like they are enjoying their meal. The lady that runs the place is super nice and lets my wife bring her own "additions" to the pho. The pho is really good and you can choose from the usual choices - flank, beef round, tendon, meatball. The broth is delicious and you can order extra noodles which I did. The chili pepper sauce is really really good but make sure you taste and taste. I made mine a little too spicy and had to add more broth - which they made and gave to me. Excellent!!!!!! After eating the bowl, I felt good. I was stuffed but in a good way. The feeling lasted all night and I never had to eat again for the rest of the day and I slept great ! There was a constant flow of people. I guess everyone knows how good this place is. My brother in law says this place is the best in Hilo. I believe it.

The papaya salad was so delicious- generous portion of shredded green papaya topped with lots of crunch peanuts and fried shallots. The entire table gobbled it up. The Best Pho We've Ever Had - Hidden Gem in Hilo!…read more We eat pho everywhere--from the mainland to different parts of Hawaii--and Pho 99 in Hilo absolutely blew us away. From the outside, it's easy to overlook: a total hole-in-the-wall spot with a modest exterior. But don't be fooled. The moment you step inside, the friendly service and incredible aroma let you know you're in for something special. The broth was hands-down the best we've ever tasted--rich, clear, perfectly seasoned, and deeply comforting. Every bite was packed with flavor and freshness. The meat was tender and high quality, and the noodles had the perfect texture. You can tell they take serious pride in their food here. If you're in Hilo and even thinking about pho, do yourself a favor and stop here. It's one of those rare, unforgettable meals that makes you wish you had discovered it sooner. We'll be talking about this bowl of pho for a long time.

We showed up right when they opened at 5:30 p.m. without reservations on a Wednesday evening and was luckily able to get seated at the bar. Between the two of us, we ordered a bunch of items off the "small" section of the menu, including the smokey sashimi, sizzling tetsuyaki poke, smoked tonnato caesar, crispy rice, and their special of the day -- agedashi wontons. Of the items we ordered, the crispy rice and the agedashi wontons were my favorite items. The crispy rice is priced per piece, and you'll certainly want to order at least two per person, because one is simply not enough. The rice block is fried a beautiful golden brown -- similar to a hash brown. The crispy rice pairs perfectly with the ono mixture on top of it. With the agedashi wontons, I initially thought the filling was a bit under-seasoned at first, but when enjoyed with the broth, the wonton comes out tasting perfectly seasoned. The broth had so much umami to it and the wonton had the perfect crunch to it I always love a good Caesar salad and the one here is spectacular. With anchovy croutons, shaved cured egg yolk, and smoked ahi dressing, you're getting some creative, premium ingredients in this salad and everything works so well together. Even if you're not a salad person, I would definitely recommend giving this dish a try. On top of delicious food, the service at Moon & Turtle was spectacular. Food was promptly brought out after we placed our order, pacing didn't ever feel rushed, our water cups were never empty, and our server checked on us regularly to make sure we had everything we needed without being overbearing. I would definitely stop by Moon & Turtle again if I'm in Hilo.
