My wife and I visited Hawaiian Shrimp Company since we were craving garlic shrimp. Located inside a seemingly deserted food court inside a strip mall, Hawaiian Shrimp Company is well hidden. Unless you're actively looking for it, you probably won't stumble upon it randomly. Between the two of us, we shared a single plate with garlic shrimp and lilikoi shrimp and three sides -- two scoops of taro potatoes (extra charge for having a duplicate side) and some broccoli. For close to $30, the shrimp plate feels expensive, but you actually get quite a bit of food -- definitely enough for two to comfortably share. Between the two types of shrimp (a plate comes with four of each), I liked the garlic shrimp a bit more. I loved how intense the garlic flavor was in the shrimp. In the past when I've had garlic shrimp in Hawaii, it's always been drown in a pool of butter, resulting in an oily coat around your mouth after each bite. The shrimp here uses a fraction of the butter and oil used elsewhere, leaving a much cleaner taste after each bite. With the lilikoi shrimp, my first bite reminded me walnut shrimp: there was a subtle sweetness to the shrimp. Unlike the garlic shrimp, the lilikoi shrimp are butterflied, making it easy to distinguish between which shrimp is what flavor. The fact that the shrimp can even be butterflied means the shrimp used here are quite large in size, indicative of the value you're getting with your plate. With the sides, the broccoli is well-seasoned, and the taro potatoes have nice large chunks mixed in. Overall, I'm pretty satisfied with my meal at Hawaiian Shrimp Company. I understand some folks would be quick to write-off a restaurant as understated as this one, but definitely give it a try if you're looking for some good tasting garlic shrimp. read more

The portion size was more than enough for one person! The hurricane shrimp was just the right amount of spice!! Loaded on a bed of rice! My daughter finished all 5 pcs of her side shrimp with non to spare! So I say it was a 10/10. One of thee first places I tried while being in Hilo! Hawaiian shrimp company is located inside the food court. I went there at around 10 am and there were plenty of seating available. The parking lot was 80% full since it shares it with walmart. I ordered the garlic shrimp kalbi combo plate. The shrimp was delicious and the kalbi was even better. Well marinated, juicy, and fatty. The kimchi side was too salty which i gave up on eating it. If the price was a bit lower, this place definitely gets a 5! read more

The garlic shrimp is delicious. The shrimp themselves are huge and you get plenty. Staff was super friendly upon arrival. Food took a while to make (15-20 minutes) so I think shrimp is made to order. You get choice of sides. I asked for broccoli as one of mine but I think they misheard me or missed it. Not a huge deal. The food is well made, and I'd return. It's in a strip mall style cafeteria, so there are tables and high chairs available to eat your food. I want to go back and try the lilikoi shrimp. read more

I heard a new shrimp place recently opened up in Hilo. I've been wanting to try it for a few months now and finally got the chance to! It's located in the Waiakea plaza food court in between Office Max, Ross, and Walmart. It's connected to Fun Factory along with other food take out restaurants like L&L and Kalbi Express. There's ample parking around the area so no need to worry about that. Shrimp is one of my favorite guilty pleasures that I wouldn't mind the eating on a daily basis (hella unhealthy but sooooo good). Upon entering the food court, I could already smell the garlic from the shrimp. Mouth watering. I got the half-half plate that consisted of garlic and lilikoi shrimps with sweet potato, mac salad, and corn. Two of my friends got that and one got the hurricane shrimp plate. The shrimps were a bit overcooked but that's okay for me! The flavor is what gets me. The garlic shrimp wasn't overpowering yet still had a ton of flavor. The lilikoi shrimp was super unique! It has a somewhat sweetish tang that worked really well on the shrimp. Both flavors seeped through the rice, making it sooooo flavorful and irresistible not to eat. I tried a bit of the hurricane flavor, and that was just mediocre to me. It was a ketchup/mayo kind of sauce with furikake. In addition to the shrimps, their sides were really good! The sweet potato still had skin on it, but I didn't mind it at all. The mac salad wasn't too on the mayo and had fish cake mixed in it too! Honestly, I would 100% recommend this place even though it's kind of on the pricier end. It's not often you'll find a flavorful shrimp place that lives up the hype (although, that's usually hard to mess up).
