My wife was raised Lutheran and was looking for a church in Austin to become part of and to teach our kids about her religion (we are an interfaith family, I am Jewish). We did a tour with Beth Knippa and sent our oldest for a shadow day after submitting an application. My child had an OK experience but said "other kids couldn't follow directions" (we were also told by faculty on pick up that my child followed directions and participated better than current students). We later got an e-mail from Beth asking how it went which I responded to positively and a short follow up later saying Redeemer "was not the proper learning environment for them". After the feedback we'd received so far this was surprising so we e-mailed Beth to ask if she could provide more context on their decision. She adamantly refused to provide any additional information (after my child had spent the entire day there and my wife did a follow up meet and greet with my younger child). Overall, it seems like interfaith families are out for the school - of course they couldn't cite that specifically (even if you're actively looking for a church community and 1/2 raised in the faith). Typically I wouldn't post an online review but both my wife and I were appalled by the lack of transparency in their decision which leads us to believe a lack of openness in the community to families from different backgrounds. We're still considering churches/a school that are the best fit for our kids and in hindsight are relieved that Redeemer made their true colors known early. It's certainly not the welcoming Christian community we'd hoped for.

Someone talked about underrepresentation which i agree with, but has nothing to do with race or origin. I feel severely under represented as a student, but this is because there's a group of popular kids with white and mexican kids that dominate this, which is not related to race. I also saw the review talking about the two administration peoples,and i agree to a WAY lesser extent: They may have been incompetent, but in now way did they severely affect the savio environment in such a way. I truly know one of the people they're taking about and they tried their best, even if students didn't feel it worked. About what's actually "toxic", are the students themselves. The teachers enable the popular kids and their spoiled entitlement and lack of spiritual education in which these kids blatantly gossip and disrespect other nice teachers. They shun those who are themselves and like joking around when they very well do the same. About savio's work load, it's very difficult, especially junior year, but after all no one is forcing us to pay to o there every year, it's college preparatory after all. I do agree that savio underpays their staff, but they're not exactly government funded, when staff sign up, they know their salary. Lastly, for my real opinion on Savio: It's not very catholic, and lacks a spiritual aspect. Go to a cheaper catholic school like San Juan Diego and find a more friendly student environment.

Academically, test scores are usually pretty high. The teaching staff was competent, for the most part, and a select few teachers were very influential. All the classes are up to speed in terms of technology and material. Of course, that was before the Texas Board of "Education" voted in the new curriculum. *facepalm* Athletics have always been strong at CPHS. I ran on the cross-country team and we usually placed highly. Timberwolf football is also very good, due to the fact that here in Central Texas they take their football *very* seriously. The marching band's won the State Championship twice now. Aside from the usual high school sports, there is also a lacrosse team, though I think they're more of an unofficial club, at least they were. As far as extracurricular activities, there's plenty of clubs and groups to be a part of. I participated on the Debate team and the school newspaper, The Wolfpack, and both usually received quite a bit of acclaim. There's also the Wolfcast, which shows local news and features, Junior Statesmen of America, the Junior Engineering and Technology Society, DECA (and their infamous trip), Philosophy Club, Invisible Children Club, Film Club and a whole bunch of others. CPHS could be a lot more diverse, but then again it's the suburbs, so that's kind of to be expected. That's not a detraction, by the way, just a note. At any rate everyone got along just fine. There's a strong Advanced Placement program here, although if you want International Baccalaureate you have to get bussed over to one of the other schools. Pretty good as far as high schools go. I don't recall any serious problems while I was here.

And there have been some students that have caused some problems in classes. Mr. Aldama was pretty chill. She now looks forward to going to school and describes school as awesome and fun - every parents dream come true for their kid to love school! She now comes home singing songs whereas before she needed to disconnect and would beg to watch TV (she's not interested in TV since Sankalpa - I think the environment fosters self esteem and love of productivity). She does yoga, learns Chinese and Spanish, and the staff are unflinching in their standards for teaching the children grace and curtesy. I'd say this school is great for any child, but more for children and parents who: 1. Like a quieter learning environment: it gets loud, but at specific times. During the work hours it's quiet and relaxed. 2. Love nature (they're often out and even with clipboards studying things like plants and fractals) 3. Like forging deeper relationships with others: because of the more intimate setting, you're going to interact with parents and the teachers every day. This isn't for everyone, but if you like that sense of community and extended family, it's like that here. 4. Are ok with their child not taking state tests: there are other tests given (one of the very cool things about Sankalpa, it's what first perked my ears) to see where the child is in their learning, and then to tweak their learning program to "fill in the gaps" so to speak. This is how every child has their own individual learning program. 5. Are willing to pay tuition: I was worried about this until I saw how much she loved school and learning, then I realized it was the best investment ever. They're only this little once, and it's the best thing ever to find the school where they can thrive and be enlivened. 6. Want experienced teachers: Sankalpa might be a new school but all the teachers are seasoned and it shows in their interactions with the kids. The principal also has worked at nearly all the alternative schools in Austin so she knows what's what. 7. Are okay with going through Sankalpas admission process: for us this was actually fun, but everyone is different. We enjoyed taking the tour, meeting with the principal and spending an hour getting to know each other, and our daughter loved her trial time at the school which was a week, some kids might be longer or shorter. I loved going through all this because it really helped us make a decision based on facts rather a feeling. It's like getting to know someone before getting married or making a commitment. :) If you're considering Sankalpa at least go through the admission process, it's the best way to really know if it's the right match for your family (but more importantly your child).

The playground is pretty awesome too! My son is in a safe and loving environment. I couldn't ask for anything better!
