However, the constant rotation of teachers, having students working primarily on a tablet, and pairing students of widely varied abilities to learn from 1 teacher just wasn't what my child needed to succeed. (This may work just fine for your child.) Unfortunately, it took me a while to realize this after spending quite a large sum of money that could've been directed elsewhere. That being said, I have a friend whose child thrived quite nicely with Sylvan's tutoring so the expected results from this learning environment are likely very child-specific. It is worth a try if your child could use some academic enrichment. Figure out your child's learning style and cater the help you seek to their individual needs.

My daughter is 7 and has been receiving tutoring through Total Tutoring for several years. I…read morestarted my daughter young because I feel that her education is very important. At first the sessions were great! The tutors were effective and my daughter made a lot of progress in a short period of time. Honestly, I was very happy with the results of the tutoring sessions, and as a result, decided to have my daughter receive Spanish tutoring. I contacted Total Tutoring and organized for a spanish tutor to come to my house for weekly lessons. These sessions were scheduled for 30 minutes at the request of the tutor due to my daughters young age. The lessons began in September of last year, and as of today, she does not understand the phrase "Hola, como estas?". Needless to say her progress has been minimal. During the time my daughter has been receiving lessons from her tutor, Nannette Simmons, I noticed that she was consistently showing up late and leaving early which is discouraging considering the cost of each lesson. I contacted the agency to express my concerns and asked for a different tutor. I was told by Total Tutoring that they would try to find someone new to replace Nannette. Yesterday (December 2nd), the tutor again showed up late, so I decided to set a 30 minute timer. No surprise, the tutor was leaving early. I informed Nannette that should would no longer be tutoring my daughter and told her it was because she was consistently showing up late and leaving early. After each tutoring session we receive an email with a session summary; this is meant to highlight progress and address areas of weakness for my daughter to work on. I received the session report for the final summary and it was blank. I contacted Total Tutoring, cc'ing Nannette, expressing my opinion that this was unprofessional. I received an update session summary which was even more unprofessional!!! Nannette's updated session summary placed the blame entirely on my daughter!!! She took no responsibility for her actions. I responded to Total Tutoring again, extremely upset with the unprofessionalism shown by Nannette. Total Tutoring's reply was that they should have edited her comments before sending them to me. They took no responsibility for Nannette and did not acknowledge her unprofessionalism even knowing my frustration. They did not apologize for her comments, only stating I should not have seen them. Total Tutoring would get a higher review because they do have some good tutors, but customer service is key to me. I need professionalism and I need a good example for my daughter. I am active duty military and I have zero tolerance for adults who place blame everywhere but on themselves while taking no time for self-reflection. Before she tutored me, I tried using Kaplan services. They were ok, but they did not have a personalized tutoring approach like Emma did. Emma's study tips, organization, and understanding of concepts is what separated her from the Kaplan tutors. Through my time with Kaplan, my verbal score only improved by 5 points, but with Emma, my score further improved by an additional 6 points! I was already confident in my quant skills, but even there Emma helped me increase my score by the few crucial points that separate top tier schools. While I was searching for a tutor many people I spoke with said my target score was unrealistic, which was discouraging. Emma was always extremely positive and encouraging. I am confident that I gained a great amount of knowledge from working with Emma, even though it was not reflected in my final score. Emma is extremely organized and and did an excellent job catering our sessions to my specific needs. If I did not understand a concept, Emma would explain it in a different way until I was able to grasp it. She is very patient and kind. I also loved that Emma was realistic about studying vs personal life. I work a full-time job and was not able to study for 30+ hours a week as other test takers may have, and she was very understanding about this. Emma will meet you where are you at and will not pressure you as some other tutors do. She knows there is already enough pressure when applying to grad schools!
