Avis - Roaches in rental car

I had a slow-leaking tire and had to return the car earlier than planned. In the process, I accidentally left the RFID garage opener in the vehicle. By the time I realized and returned to look for it, the car was already gone. Without hesitation, Angel went to the mechanic where he suspected the car had been taken and even brought the car back so my husband, Jorge, could personally inspect it. He reassured us every step of the way that the RFID was not in the car and treated us with genuine concern and empathy. We left feeling heartbroken, believing the opener was lost. Halfway back to our hotel, Angel called us to say he had found it on the ground at the office. That moment said everything about who he is. I can honestly say I have never seen this level of commitment to customer excellence. Angel went far beyond his role, made the situation personal, and ensured we ultimately left relieved and grateful. He is a natural leader and a true asset to Avis.

No one knows what the he'll they are supposed to be doing. Absolute chaos. While rental companies in the rest of the world just give you the keys and your space number so you can get the car yourself, San Juan Avis stands alone as the most disorganized company on Planet Earth. Latin America's superpower is to make things as slow and inefficient as possible. This time, it outdid itself.

It was a really nice hybrid Hyundai, very smooth and very gas efficient. I genuinely couldn't have asked for a better price and better car. I had a great time. I highly recommend payless. I read the other reviews and i'm not to sure what they are on. I had no issues.

I booked directly through the Payless website because I assumed the estimated total would be…read morereasonably accurate. My reservation showed an estimated total of $169.74, but when I arrived at the counter I was presented with charges totaling approximately $256 before any optional products. I will attach screenshots of both the online reservation and the charges presented at the counter so others can compare them for themselves. This turned into a huge waste of time. I took the airport shuttle to the Payless location expecting to pick up my reserved vehicle, only to find that I either had to pay significantly more than the quoted amount or walk away without a car. I ultimately chose to rent from another company because I no longer felt comfortable with the transaction. I was also told that if I declined the unlimited toll package, I would be charged $50 every time I used a toll road, plus the cost of the toll. However, the information on the company's website states that the administrative fee is $2.95 per toll transaction, plus the toll amount. During the insurance discussion, I was told that they needed to know whether anyone was driving my personal vehicle back home because they would be "transferring" my insurance coverage from my personal vehicle to the rental car. That explanation did not match my understanding of how my personal auto insurance works. Rather than argue, I simply confirmed that no one else was driving my vehicle and declined the optional coverage. I don't mind being offered optional products--that's part of renting a car. My concern is that the online estimated total did not reflect the amount presented at pickup, and I received explanations that conflicted with the company's own published policies. Based on my experience, I would recommend that anyone renting here carefully review every charge before signing.

Like Wow! That did cover all Tolls and Gas so you get it.. Great deal if you're doing a bunch of driving.. It was easy getting my reservation.. Great staff and customer service.. They were clear.. Return was easy as well.. They'll record the car condition when you pick it up. To keep track of the car's condition.. You should do the same just to be safe and have it yourself.. And that's at any rental spot in general.. in the end all worked out. Cat was great, drive great and I enjoyed my time out there. Thrifty came through for me. -Ray

For William Diodonet (my husband)…read more (You really should take the time to read this, it might save you from huge headaches) I rarely leave negative reviews, but our experience with Thrifty Puerto Rico, Best Rate Cars and Truck Rentals in San Juan, PR is the local operator associated with Hertz, which owns Thrifty, has been one of the most frustrating customer service experiences we have had. I waited this long to write this review in the hopes that this issue would've been resolved to my satisfaction, and because I did not want my frustration to come through this review. We rented a vehicle from June 16 through June 30, 2026 in San Juan. We documented the vehicle at drop-off which was at Merceditas Airport, Ponce PR and were told to just leave the keys in the Dropbox, so obviously, no one came out to inspect the vehicle with us, but we did document the drop-off. We were not billed until July 28, nearly a month after returning the vehicle, and when the charge was finally processed, our bill had increased by an additional $500 for alleged tire damage. When I contacted Thrifty, I was initially told a tire had been completely flat. However, the representatives I spoke with could not tell me which tire was allegedly damaged or provide documentation supporting the charge. I submitted a dispute and spent weeks contacting multiple people, repeatedly explaining the situation, and requesting basic information and evidence. Thrifty eventually refunded $320.48 but continues to hold us responsible for the remaining $179.52. The photographs and invoice provided to us do not, in our opinion, establish that the alleged damage occurred while the vehicle was in our possession, and we continue to dispute the charge. Photos did not show the tires on the vehicle but rather on the floor at the repair shop. They claim one tire presented a sidewall bulge and required replacement and a second tire contained a screw and required repair. Again, no prove/documentation has been provided to me even after repeated requests. From a flat tire at drop-off to a screw and a bulge. My date, location and time stamped video shows that when I left the vehicle there was no flat tire. Another concern is the effect experiences like this can have on the reputation of the Hertz family of brands. I understand that local locations may have their own management or business arrangements, but customers rent under the Thrifty name and reasonably associate their experience with the broader Hertz family of brands. From a customer's perspective, the internal business arrangement should not matter. Experiences like this can damage customer confidence and make people think twice before choosing Thrifty or any Hertz family brand. My advice: photograph and video the entire vehicle at both pickup and drop-off, keep all correspondence, and carefully monitor your credit card for charges appearing after your rental ends. Also beware, the price quoted to you at the time of reservation will almost double when you arrive for pickup, but that's another review. We will continue to pursue the remaining disputed charge through the appropriate channels.
