Our dog Zero was coming from foster care/rescue and we wanted to start off right with her obedience training. We went ever Saturday for an hour at the Millersville location and it was great. We loved our trainer - and I am so sorry I cannot remember her name (she had Yellow hair!). But she was amazing, respectful, and patient with everyone and the dog parents. LOL She was very skittish in the beginning but with confidence and learning and homework we did a lot of great strides to making her feel more comfortable with us training her and being at home. She still will love checking out squirrels but we have been taught on what to do when that happens. We appreciate all you all do, and look forward to checking out more of their classes. read more

Great social class for puppies. By the end of the session all the pups had formed a playmate bond and came out of their shell. Positive staff (two instructors) and a fun time for everyone. Samantha really understands dogs and teaches you how to communicate to your dog. Our Pit Bull, Lily, was very dog-reactive and even dog-aggressive when we first got her. She would go crazy and it was like I wasn't even there. Now, she rarely reacts, and if she does, she quickly stops when I give a correction. Most of the time, she now ignores other excited dogs and turns away from them if they approach. This is a much better choice than scruffing them! A lot of what corrected this reactive behavior came from obedience training. Obedience in turn made her a better dog and a more confident dog. It strengthened our bond and she looks to me for guidance rather than making decisions on her own. Other behaviors fixed with my dog include the following: 1. Pulling on leash. 2. Greeting guests by jumping up. 3. Going through doorways before me and/or without invitation. 4. Barking at large trucks. When I take her out to public places such as Home Depot, pet stores, Bass Pro, she always gets compliments. Notably, people always mention how they wish their dog was so well-behaved. Samantha gives you the knowledge and the tools to have a great dog. But in the end, it is up to you to follow through. This isn't a magical fix. You must put in the work, the time, and understand to communicate simply and clearly. read more

Our little Boston Terrier, Seamus, has been going to Leash Free Living day training for over a year. He absolutely Loves "school" and his teachers. I contacted this company to help train my new puppy since even though I have had dogs before I wanted to update my skills and not rely on aversive methods of the past. I scheduled the first session for the in-home puppy package, but I was dissatisfied with the lesson. The trainer used more positive re-enforcement than I had been taught in the past but ultimately relied on aversive methods to teach my puppy that I am dominant. (After this experience, I did go back and more carefully read the information that I signed (shame on me) and discovered that there is a section of their board and train paperwork that mentions their option to use a prong collar should they decide to, so buyer beware -- read what you are agreeing to!). When I contacted a manager about not wanting to continue, the person I talked to let me know that if I chose not to continue the puppy "package", I would be charged the non-package price for the lesson ($170), (also in the paperwork I signed - double shame on me) which was definitely NOT the value I received. Apparently, the trainer was supposed to send a follow-up email detailing the lesson and providing support - I did not receive that until I had questioned the $170 value with the manager. Additionally, the lesson had not included all of the skills that the email "recap" indicated that we did. During my conversation with the manager, she chose to try to bully me into continuing with the lesson package in spite of my dissatisfaction and implied that because I have a lab puppy I would not be able to train her on my own. She also decided to bully me further by letting me know that the Star Puppy training classes were only for people who did the initial puppy package. Her tactics only proved that they do not understand good customer service and seem to think that they are the only game in town. I know that there are a lot of positive reviews here - most of them seem to be for board and train, so that makes me wonder what happens when the owners are not watching. If you want positive training and good customer service, perhaps look elsewhere. There are other options in this area. read more

I used Leash Free living to keep my dogs occupied when we are away. I set up a time for Sam to come in and train my dogs on Thanks Giving day. I even talked to them about it. I was surprised that they would work during that day. We made plans to go away just for the day. 3 days before the day I checked the website and my services were canceled. I called and was told that because of Thanksgiving they would not be able to serve us. I can understand this but common at least call us that you canceled. No feedback at all. Sam is a great trainer but this time the lack of feedback was quite disappointing. Now we have to scramble to find an alternative and if not cancel our day trip. Really disappointed read more

Sam is very knowledgeable regarding obedience training. I brought my 4 year old yorkie-poo to one of her group 10 week training courses, and my dog's abilities to listen to me and behave improved a lot. Sam taught us humans many techniques to have good carryover with training our dogs. We got our puppy Ellie when she was 9 weeks old. She was a cute, fun, crazy puppy that definitely needed some discipline! We hired Sam to come in for 3 private lessons which really helped us as owners get a grasp of what to do when Sam wasn't around. She gave us basic instruction, taught us some tricks and gave us TONS of tips. She was so wonderful that we decided to sign up for the obedience class. We went for 10 weeks and Ellie got to make some cute doggy friends and really focus on what was expected of her. We probably should have practiced and worked with her more on our down time but Ellie passed and even received her Canine Good Citizen certificate! We loved Sam as a trainer; she was straight and to the point, didn't use force and gave us some great strategies to continue to work on. I am hoping to put Ellie in the retrieve class next & then after that, hopefully Sam will have some agility! ;) We couldn't be happier with Leash Free Living and would recommend it to any dog owner! I am so happy with our experience with Sam and Leash Free Living! My husband and I adopted 2 18 month old brother and sister Italian greyhounds this summer. We are experienced IG owners, however, we were not experienced or dedicated in training either of our other dogs. So, with these new pups with lots of energy, we were wanting to get some basic training. Sam certainly accomplished that in our 6 week session but beyond that, we have reaped benefits I did not even imagine and have created a bond with these new dogs that we are so very happy about. Everything the other reviews said is true, Sam knows dogs and how to communicate with them, and she teaches you that communication style as well. She is patient, focused, on time, courteous and efficient - we feel like we have gotten our money's worth and then some. She is intent on addressing the most concerning issues with each dog and wants to help you focus there first. Sam has given us confidence by giving us tools for success and in turn, our dogs have more confidence in us and themselves. They look to us for direction, they have good impulse control where before they had none. Our house is calmer and at the same time, more fun - a lot less yelling (none actually) and a lot more "yes!" and "good dogs!". It does take work, but it is such a bonding experience with your dog, I look forward to the time with my pups when we are training now. Also, training tires our dogs out! Which is great! And Sam always has a new series or version of things so they are never bored. And if one tool or trick isn't working to correct the behavior you are trying to address, she always has another option and is willing to help you find the one that works for your dog. In addition to all of this, Leash Free Living has many different classes and activities available to continue and refresh your skills and get social times with other dogs in a safe and trusted environment. They are quite flexible with scheduling, which is very helpful too. Basically, I would say Leash Free Living is a great dog training resource and community. After trying a few pet store dog training classes that seem to focus solely on positive reinforcement we were struggling with our Scottish terrier. Sure, that may be good enough if you have a dog who just wants to please you but using only treats as a reward creates a dog who will only obey when you happen to have a sack of stinky treats attached to your hip. Who can do that? As a last resort we found Samantha and she was amazing. A former horse trainer, she understood that you have to also let an animal know that disobedience could equal a negative consequence, and some responsibility has to be transferred to the animal to make the correct decision. We try to make children understand consequences... so it makes sense that it would work with animals as well (an uncomfortable jerk on the choke chain for example). MacKenna is a much more obedient dog now and I feel more confident taking her in public and on walks knowing that she knows how to behave and that is the expectation, regardless of whether I have a pocket full of treats. It is also beneficial for her safety, knowing that she will come when I call her off-leash in an emergency situation. We have literally recommended her to at least 100 people in dog parks and on the trails. Totally worth it... read more
