The best liquor store in the bay area. I also get a 10% discount as a Bay Area Mashers (BAM) member. It doesn't suck.

This is place is half a wine cellar and half a liquor store. The only problem I have with this location is the hours. I haven't found any posted hours and they seem to almost always be closed early. Personally, I think a liquor store should be open till at least 9... but that's just how I see things... read more

Ledgers really came through from my first visit here. I'll just describe, as it really gets to the nuances of why shopping here is far more rewarding than hitting up BevMo. I came in for some pernod for a recipe. It was hard to find, but of course Ledgers had it. I only needed a cup and balked at buying the large $30 bottle. The proprietor then suggested that ouzo would be a great substitute and came in a smaller and more affordable $6 bottle. Perfect! We then proceeded to have a great conversation about all of the ways I could apply anise-flavored liqueur in future culinary and cocktail experiences, should I actually go with the pernod. It was an informative, no pressure casual conversation with someone who really knew his alcohol. He's been there every other time I've come in, so it seems I can always rely on his sage advice when I have questions. In addition to liquor, Ledgers carries a great beer selection. Russian River Brewing Company, for instance. They also seem to carry quite a bit of wine but I haven't gandered too far into that part of the store. Parking is easy and plentiful. read more

hmmmm... after spending some moola at Ledger, I had to pick up some stuff at Andronico's across the way. WTF?!!! I think the liquor's cheaper at Andronico's! How can THAT happen?!(everyone knows A's will charge you double if not triple the price than everyone else). Well, the only satisfaction I got is that I supported a local business. I do have to say that their beer selection perked my attention. Perhaps I can do price comparison then. This place isn't pretty to look at, but then again...their product speaks for itself. Rows and rows of beverages stacked as high as possible. Ledgers has an extremely impressive selection of spirits in general, but their service is stellar. Everytime I go in there, I'm get stuck in extended conversation with my latest find, and they always want to know. I passed this place by for years and never went in, thinking it was just another liquor store that possibly frequented by "boozers." When I finally went inside looking for a hard to find Ale that I love, I was shocked. This place is an Emporeum of various distilled spirits. The staff was very knowledgable, and told me that my favorite ale was delivered weekly. Prices are reasonable, but I save $ since I don't have to burn gas driving out to Concord and elsewhere! read more

Honestly, if you are buying your booze from the grocery store, you are doing youself a disservice. The prices at Ledger's can't be beat, and the knowledge base is unbeatable. And you can park! In Berkeley! The owner is so extremely helpful. It turns out I DO like gin & tonics, I just like a specific kind of gin. I wouldn't have known this withouth help from Ledger's. Okay.... If this place is a four start deal it follows that BevMo is only three stars. I went over to Ledger Liquor a couple of weeks ago because I was sent there to pick up a rather esoteric bottle of liqueur for a friend in So Cal. I live on the peninsula south of San Francisco so it's a real hike for me to get over to Berkeley. However, the person that wanted this stuff was a real good friend so I obliged. They did their homework and found that this was one of the few places in the Bay Area where said bottle could be purchased. Anyway, I walked in and was blown away! They have an amazing selection!!! I consider myself to be somewhat of a beer aficionado and I was shocked to see some things I've never heard of let alone sampled. They have a pretty limitted floor space so be sure if you are looking for a particular item that you ask the staff. The liqueur that we were after had to be requested and the kind fellow behind the till was more than happy to go in the back and find it for us. Like I said if you live on the peninsula it is a trek to visit this place but the selection makes it more than worth while..... plus you get the satisfaction of supporting a small outstanding business rather than "Walmart" type chain. I will end by saying I'm not bagging on BevMo. I have a BevMo card but when it come to selection Ledger is the place to shop. read more

Great liquor and beer selection with some rare micros and imports. Nice staff and good prices. I shop mainly for beer while the selection is very good, they do a poor job presenting and maintaining the beer. In terms of display, much is jumbled together in loose groupings. I've found way out of date bottles (2 year old lagers), some bottles are dusty and dirty, and some don't seem like they were kept properly such as the Fantome with a worn off and molded label. read more

Yes, this is the best liquor store in Berkeley. It's a very humble-looking store, but I wandered in one night and was blown away by the selection. Great beers in all manner of sizes and shapes and enough wines to keep you busy for months. Some snacks, too, though that's obviously not the highlight. The owners are also incredibly friendly and helpful. I feel like a valued guest when I walk inside. Prices are fair...more expensive than Trader Joe's but comparable to Berkeley Bowl or any of the other liquor stores in the area. I did notice a while ago that they had a big sign that says "Park your bike inside and shop!" which is pretty cool except that they, suspiciously, had located the bicycle rack in precarious proximity to Myriad Breakable Glass Things. But it looks like they moved it to a safer location. :) read more

I'm almost positive I'll give this place its 5th star after more visits. It only took a minute of browsing his beer selection for me to call my boss and ask that my paycheck be direct deposited into Ledger's bank account. Too bad I only had a few minutes and $50 or so to spend there, because the beer selection is very impressive. I hesitate to even mention that there are beers there that I've never found anywhere else. Please, leave at least one of everything for me yelpers! They don't appear to have a large selection in the way of wine, but there are plenty of stores that cater to that fancy. I'll visit them when I need to do so. Seems I need to find a use for bitters, as I have never seen such a selection. Hours are a little strange, but that's good for me: I won't be able to spend money there every day as is my wont. Can't wait to go back and update my review with further praise. read more

I went in to Ledger's for the first time yesterday, and the staff were extremely helpful, showing me options and giving recommendations. I was shopping for white tequila, and I ended up with an amazing bottle. There are so many options there, it is a little overwhelming, so I appreciated the assistance. Their motto should be "We Got It!" (And if they don't, they probably are willing to get it if you ask.) The beer selection is fantastic, the liquor selection puts BevMo to shame, and the prices are reasonable. What's not to like? Ed is a really helpful and friendly guy, and the folks working for him have a wide product knowledge as well. He has gone out of his way to special order something I needed on short notice. Small businesses have a tough time balancing open hours (a complaint of some reviews), product, knowledgeable staff, and prices, and Ledgers has hit the sweet spot exactly. Wow, what a find in the City of Berkeley!! Like others here, I found the selection of beers, wines, and liquors to be absolutely AWESOME! Anyone entering the store gets individualized attention to help point you to what you want. The two major dings for me that lower the rating for Ledger Liquors are the following: 1) I thought that their various beer and liquor prices were fair, but a bit high. After visiting Ledger Liquors, I went to Trader Joe's and handily found equivalent TASTY, good-quality craft-beers at 2/3 off the price of Ledger Liquors. Even Ledger's bargain beers didn't cut it for me after visiting TJs. 2) The other major ding was the feeling I got from the clerk when I looked around the store to shop for beers and wines. Yes, I know that there PROBABLY have been incidents of theft in this part of Berkeley, and yes, I realize that that Indo-Pakistani guy behind the counter was just PROBABLY trying to help-out customers. Still, I resented the counter guy's hovering around me and clear size-up of me, essentially to see if I REALLY would spend money there or else turn out to be a crook! For THAT, I felt less comfortable going to Ledger Liquors than I would going to TJs, regardless of the costs and availability of all sorts of alcoholic spirits at either place! OTOH, the experiences of others might be vastly different than my own here.....YMMV. read more
