I always enjoy the environment and atmosphere in here. The place is clean, mostly quiet, and well-organized. Tomoko is wonderful. She is the go-to stylist in Bloomington for Asian hair, and she is the only person I will let touch my hair in town. She made me feel really comfortable with her calm but warm way of interacting with me while she worked on my ultra-long hair (my hair was past my waist). I asked to have my hair cut to just past shoulder length, and Tomoko instinctively asked if I usually cut a lot of my hair off and then leave it to grow for a couple years before having it cut again. I said I usually try to trim it every year, but I want it to be low-maintenance (I hate using hairspray or gels or other products in my hair other than shampoo and conditioner). She worked her magic and made sure my haircut was as perfect as possible. At the end of it, she happily said that I should be good for 6 months to a year. I had an incredible experience at Lee Parker Do Salon. I haven't had my hair professionally cut in 5 years due to bad haircuts in the past having super curly hair. I had an appointment with tomoko. When the receptionist said it'd take an hour she meant it. Tomoko will do a great job! She cut my hair perfectly. Blow drying my hair took the longest time because it's so thick. She is the go-to Asian stylist and it's hard finding someone in Bloomington to cut Asian hair well. I went to Do for a haircut on January 27, 2012 and I saw Heather. I have had short hair for seven or eight years, during which time I've exclusively seen the same stylist. My regular stylist has been traveling a lot and lives/works in Indianapolis so I had to branch out (short hair requires frequent haircuts) and try someone new. Heather was very friendly and quite talented. I think she did a great job given the lack of instruction I provided to her, I told her to make me look good and to do what she wanted. I wanted to like this place, I really did. They came highly recommended by people I trust. I am going to detail the reason for my negative review so you can decide if it is something that would bother you or not. You might be happy there. I need a pro to color my hair an unusual shade and they promised they had the right people. I've tried two of them and thought I had a good relationship with Heather. I am not at all sure what happened today. All I know is I had a disastrous interaction with the receptionist who was apparently consulting Heather in the background. The receptionist is a bit of Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde (or perhaps there are two receptionists? That would explain it.) In our first interaction she as amazingly spiteful and mocking about what was, admittedly, not a good parking effort on my part. In our next interaction she was nice, however, so I decided it was my imagination. When I called to say that the first stylist I tried hadn't worked well for me we made a consultation appt. for Nov 10 with Heather who she assured me was expert at nontraditional colors and we reserved a four hour appointment for Dec. 1 so I could be sure to get in to see her as long as I needed. Had a great consultation with Heather. She was sure she'd have no trouble getting my color the desired shade and I liked her very much. We looked at the book where my appointment was scheduled for Dec. 1. I was originally scheduled from 10-2 but after my consultation she said she didn't need that much time and to come at 11 instead. So. On Friday lots of bleach and two attempts at toning my hair left me looking like a yellow chick with blue tips. I clearly needed more work but I had to leave right at 2:00. Heather knew I was leaving the country on Friday so she told me to come in today (Dec 5.) She said she was booked solid in the morning but to come in the afternoon after 1:00 and she would re-tone me and cut my hair in between other color clients. There was no sign of receptionist anywhere and I had to go so I asked Heather if I could pay her when I came back today and she said sure. At this point, despite the fact that my hair was dramatically the wrong color, I still felt confident we would get there. So today rolls around and I have a busy day so I called for guidance about exactly when to come in. Heather had said after 1:00 but I had some commitments so figured it would be best to know when so that I didn't spend my whole afternoon there. Receptionist was snippy with me right out of the box. When I had said I had to leave at the end of my 11-2 appointment with my hair unfinshed, she said I didn't have an 11-2 appointment because "we never tell you how long your appointment is going to last since there is no way of knowing." She says the fact that I had had 10-2 in my book and changed it to 11-2 was an error on my part. The beginning time did change but there was never any ending time so I should have kept the day free. That seems odd to me because people have, you know, lives, and Heather had other appointments booked for the afternoon too, but I had clearly misunderstood. Receptionist consulted with Heather and said she could only see me today at 1:00. I said okay, I had a meeting and could not make that but that I needed to pay for last week. Receptionist seemed upset that I had not paid and said "Where was I?" Good question, and not my problem. But she got madder. I asked her why she was so angry with me when what we were dealing with here was clearly a misunderstanding, not ill will. She got very cold and starting ma'aming me like crazy. She said Heather was only going to charge me $150 instead of the full $180 but I asked her to run the charge for $200, the full amount and a tip. That seemed fair to me. She repeated that she was charging me only $150. I was getting pretty frustrated and confused at this point and said "how can I come back there if you won't let me pay for my service?" Then she told me it would be better if didn't come back but rather that I severed my relationship with all stylists at the salon. And have a happy holiday. (Yes, she said that.) I am so dense. I've never even been fired even from a job so it took me way too long to realize I was being fired from a hair salon. Possibly Heather didn't like me as much as I liked her, possibly she knew she couldn't fix my hair, possibly the receptionist is a nutcase, possibly this is Parker policy. I don't know. I do know I look like a goofball with yellow and blue hair instead of silver and there is no way this gets fixed before I leave on a month long vacation Friday. I invested months in this effort, I was never informed of the policies that resulted in the misunderstanding, and they were nasty as can be about it on top of it. By all means go there but beware. I had a bad experience at a local salon so I went to Sarah at Do and she fixed my hair and made it absolutely perfect. She took exactly what I was envisioning and brought it to life. I have been going to DO salon for the past 3 years to see Heather, and usually I had been happy with my service until today. I have never been more disappointed in a hair salon. I had an appointment with her 3 weeks ago for a color/cut and she called and cancelled 4 days before for a family emergency, which is legit so I said that's fine and rescheduled for today at 11. I was told by the receptionist that I had a 2 hour block for my appt. Today was the only day I could get my hair done because this following week I am leaving for a trip and I really needed to get my hair cut & colored before leaving. I had a flight returning from another trip this morning, which ended up being a little delayed so I called Heather earlier this morning to let her know I may be about 15-20 min late and she said that would be fine. She said if she didn't have time to do a full color and cut she would at least put toner in my hair. I told her I would be coming straight from the airport. I was about 2 min from the salon at 11:15 when her receptionist called me and said that Heather couldn't do my hair anymore because she had to leave. I was shocked and confused because Heather and I had spoke just earlier this morning and made a plan. I explained that I had driven all the way from indianapolis just for the appt and that today was the only day I could come before my trip and the receptionist could've cared less. I was obviously furious so she went to talk to Heather. I could hear her and Heather talking in the background because apparently Heather didn't have the guts to tell me herself she was canceling on my appt last minute. Once the receptionist came back on the phone, she said she was sorry but Heather was not available anymore (even though my appt was supposed to be from 11am-1pm) so I said "you can expect me to never return here again" and instead of the receptionist rectifying the problem, she just said have a good day. After 3 years of loyalty and this is how I get treated?! Don't waste your time at this place. Extremely unprofessional. Clarification: I lived in Bloomington for 3 years but had moved to Indianapolis in July. So when Heather cancelled on me, I had driven all the way from Indy for no reason. It wasted over 2 hours of my time and gas money to drive back and forth, and I never even got my hair done. read more

This was the first time I cut my hair in the US, so I'm not well aware of the prices and everything here. I had been trying to avoid cutting my hair because even $25 is too much for me, but this time I really needed a haircut to get rid of all the split hairs. Sarah was very nice and fun. She did a really good job. I had rather long hair and ended with a cute stylish short hair, which really suited my face. She did exactly what I asked for and I really liked it, although it cost me $50 with tips included. But after coming home and taking a shower, I realized that the left and right side of my head were not even, so I had to cut a bit of the hair myself! In general, an OK experience. read more

Heather is by far the best hair stylist I've ever been to and probably the best hair colorist in Indiana. I love that she seems to know what I want before I do. After seeing Heather for over three years, I know I can completely trust her with my haircut and color. Right now, I'm in the middle of growing out a pixie cut and I would not be able to get through it without her, she clearly knows how to make the process as painless as possible. She also does fun "fantasy" colors on me (right now I'd say it's "steel blue") but I've also seen her do color corrections I'm sure most colorists would think were impossible, taking color-damaged brassy reds to a beautiful and natural light blonde and she even seems to have fun while she's doing it. Heather is the sort of stylist you have to see more than once to get the most out of the experience. The more you see Heather, the better she's able to intuitively give you the best color (and cut) you'll ever get. Since I have not yet been to the DO A Lee Parker Salon this review is not so much about the salon itself but about one of the new stylists, Bridgette who works there. I cannot say enough nice things about Bridgette. I met her when she first moved from Chicago to Bloomington and was working at the Aveda Salon. Bridgette is so incredibly talented and is the only stylist I have been satisfied with here in Bloomington. She is honest about telling you what styles will fit your face shape and personality and just does a teriffic job executing cuts that look good even after a few months have passed. Unaware that Bridgette was no longer at the Aveda Salon, I called there to make an appointment with her and I was absolutely crest-fallen when they told me that she was no longer there. I was quite disappointed with them when they would not tell me the name of the new salon she was working at. Thank goodness for yelp because I was able to locate her through a search of the reviews. What this whole anecdote is meant to illustrate is that she is the one stylist I want to stick with while I am here in Bloomington -- she's THAT good! I would highly recommend Bridgette. I moved away from Indiana in December, and left w/ a bang by having Bridget cut and color my hair. I had been using her for about a year, and I have never found a better colorist thus far! I have a ton of wavy hair, and she would spend hours on the foils and always made sure I was happy w/ the end product. I could not recommend her enough! My haircuts always looked great too and I loved showing off the final product to all my friends. I visit Bloomington often and when I do I also visit do salon! Heather is an impeccable stylist and a perfectionist when it comes to color. My hair has never been healthier! I love to be platinum blonde and she took her time to get rid of all the previous banding that was created by previous stylists and prescribed for me exactly the products to keep my color perfectly platinum.
