SERIOUS CONSUMER WARNING - DOCUMENTED TRANSMISSION TEARDOWN AFTER "REBUILD". I brought my truck with its 4L80E transmission to this ATRA member shop for a full rebuild. The owner, Mr. Lee, stated he has 43 years of experience and that he personally performs all the rebuilds. I paid him $2,850 and supplied an additional estimated $1300 in quality brand new parts, which he inspected and agreed to install. For context, I have 20 years of experience working on vehicles and am a certified diesel mechanic. The main reason I brought the transmission to a shop was that I didn't have the space nor resources at the time to perform a full removal, installation, and rebuild myself. Communication was polite initially, and the owner appeared willing to work with the parts I supplied. He was also extremely fast and did the actual rebuild in half a day. The transmission failed three separate times within three weeks, requiring removal and reinstallation each time. After the third failure, I towed the truck home and completely disassembled it myself. During teardown and measurement, I documented multiple serious assembly and quality-control issues, including: -Wrong pump installed, despite being told no hard parts were changed -Intermediate clutch pack assembled with incorrect clutches, leaving clearance nearly three times outside specification (which can prevent the clutch from holding properly and lead to rapid failure) -Sun gear installed upside down, blocking a critical lubrication hole required to supply oil to internal components -Several worn bearings, steels, seals, and other components appeared not to have been replaced -Reverse band misadjusted to the point the output shaft would not rotate in any gear The FIRST failure was caused by a transmission fluid leak from an old 180k-mile pump bushing and seal that were not replaced. The SECOND failure was explained to me as transfer case and transmission cracking as soon as Mr. Lee shifted into Drive.. the shop claimed it was caused by my driveshaft despite it being the original factory driveshaft with new, unbound U-joints. The THIRD failure caused severe transmission overheating (never disclosed to me) during Mr. Lee's 5-mile test drive, with a claimed valve body diagnostic code that never appeared when I scanned the truck myself. Because this truck is critical for my cross-country towing work, I ultimately spent three months in very difficult circumstance personally performing a very slow but full transmission teardown in order to rebuild the transmission correctly. I have extensive photos and video documenting all findings of why this transmission had repeated failures in a span of three weeks. Sam was very helpful. He always answer my calls and is very insightful. Last year I got a transmission rebuild on a 2011 RAV4. It has been great so decide to get my 2002 Ford Explorer done here. The explorer was jerky only after a cold start so we tried going with a smaller fix before doing a full rebuild. I was quoted around $1k. It took around 5 days before I got my car back. He gave me a warranty of 2 weeks, full credit towards a rebuild, or after 2 weeks for 6 months, it would be $500 credit. The car was driving fine except during traffic so I had to bring it back in to get the full rebuild. It costed around $3k but I paid $2k since I got the $1k credited back. It has been a week, and the car has been fine since then. I recommend Leeco Transmission as they are very honest and kind. Sam was always friendly and does a good job. I believe they have employees here who speak mandarin or korean if needed. They do not have parking here, you just drive your car in. read more

This is an honest-to-goodness review from a repeat, legit, and very satisfied customer. Back in 2019, Toyota quoted me almost $7,000 for a transmission replacement. I knew I couldn't afford that, and someone told me about Leeco Transmission in El Monte. I gave them a try, and Mr. Lee and Sam changed my whole transmission for about half the price. The work was fast, smooth, and my car never gave me problems after that. Fast forward to 2024--my check engine light came on right before my smog test. I didn't bother them or rush them because I know transmissions are complicated. There are so many processes of elimination involved, so no, you cannot rush them if you want thorough work. Your safety relies on your car, and mechanics taking the time to fix your car carefully--without you hovering over them for deadlines--matters a lot. So, no complaining or bothering on my end. I wanted them to take their time and find the problem. They kept checking everything one by one until they finally found it. It had nothing to do with the parts they fixed last year, which were still under warranty. I had down shifting issues with my 2002 Toyota Highlander and found Leeco Transmission on Yelp. After carefully reading their customer reviews, I took my car to their shop to see how much it would cost to repair or replace the transmission. Mr. Lee and Sam ran diagnostics and found sensors had failed which was also why my engine light was on. My other mechanic I usually go to recommended a transmission rebuilt which would have cost $2,500.00+. Mr. Lee and Sam were able to repair it for much less and so far, no issues with down shifting and I am able to drive it to work without worries. If this car can last for another 1 or 2 years, I can't ask for more since this is a 23 year car with 215K miles. I ended up selling off the car because I was tired of constantly taking it back for the same transmission issues. Leeco rebuilt the transmission on wife's 2013 Lexus ES350 over a month ago and it's been running smooth since. I usually do basic maintenance myself, but I seek professional help when I know there's something wrong inside an engine or transmission. Lexus/Toyota says the trans fluids are "lifetime", but of course there is no such thing as lifetime. They make it especially difficult to change/refill the fluid so never changed it until after ~120k miles. After about 5 months, wife complained the car didn't want to move from stop until engine revved and trans suddenly caught on. I'm no mechanic so assumed maybe the trans fluid filter is getting clogged, so changed the fluid a 2nd time (failing to get the pan off due to 1 bolt above frame that's not reachable with normal tools!). Would hear some soft slushy grinding sound in 1st gear, then silent once into 2nd. After getting a shallow swivel socket a week later, finally was able to change the filter and the 3rd fluid change! Was expecting to see some metal shavings on the pan magnet, but there were also pieces of metal chunks, like small rods (needle bearings)?!?!!? Drove to the market and car now would NOT shift into reverse at all! Multiple shifts and tries and restarts later, gave it a good dose of gas and it caught into reverse. Shifted to drive and drove home, but the car was making a much louder slush grinding sound all the way. I raised the white flag/surrendered and searched for transmission shops. There are couple around La Habra that seemed ok or pretty good reading over all the Yelp reviews. But Leeco Trans, although some 40 mins drive away, stood out to me as my best bet, because there was 1 or 2 reviews mentioning Lexus/Toyota transmission, while other shop reviews didn't. I wanted to take the car to a shop with experience on the U660 transmission and Leeco ended up being my choice, especially considering the owner, Mr. Lee, has been rebuilding trans for 4 decades! Called into 2 other shops, but felt Leeco probably had the most rebuilds on Toyota transmissions. Estimates were all in the same ballpark, there is no accurate estimate until trans is opened to see what's broken (mine had chewed up gears that got replaced so ended up on the higher end of the ballpark). The Lexus felt and drove smooth going to the shop, like the ailment that disappears when you arrive at the doctors office. Mr. Sam greeted me and I explained what I had done up to now and the symptoms and showed the pieces of metal that I cleaned out from the trans fluid pan. He explained the case to Mr. Lee and Mr. Lee took the car for a test drive to see if he could experience the problem. But of course the car was purring this day. Mr. Lee came back and said if I didn't show him the metal pieces he wouldn't think anything was wrong, lol. We left the car with him to go ahead and open up the trans and see what's happening on the inside. Well, things were pretty chewed up inside! Mr. Sam kept me updated on status and once trans was fully open and diagnosed, he sent me pictures of the damages Mr. Lee found. Told them to please go ahead and replace damaged parts and rebuild the trans, since I expect the engine is good to go another 120k miles easily since did the PITA spark plugs just few months ago! Took couple of days, mainly due to waiting for replacement parts, but Mr. Lee got it rebuilt and back in the car, maybe took a week in total. Car drove smooth and trouble-free again! Don't really appreciate Lexus/Toyota until you drive something else for a week, lol. The next weekend when wife pulled out of garage, I noticed there were some drops of fluid on the floor! Wiping it up, I knew it's the trans fluid (reddish)! A quick panic attack and when wife came back, I went ahead and jacked up the car to go under there again (tired of the transmission area after so many times, lol). The transmission looked clean, but saw some fluid maybe around the trans pan gasket area. Texted Mr. Sam and he responded even on his day off to bring it back in and will check and take care of it. They found a bad gasket that did not seal the pan properly, so went ahead and replaced with a new gasket. Mr. Sam kept me in the loop and he wanted to leave the car up overnight to make sure the new gasket will not leak. Confirmed it's good the next day and picked up and it's been dry and driving happily ever after:) Leeco trans in my experience has been trustworthy and honest, it's everything I would want in a transmission shop. Mr. Sam is responsive by phone and text to keep you updated. Mr. Lee is an unassuming gentleman that packs 40 years of transmssion experience, what more can I ask for!? Mr. Lee personally rebuilds each transmissions himself, just has guy/s remove/reinstall the transmission that he seems to disassemble/repairs alone. Wells its hard giving someone 5 Stars when you just paid $2,300 to repair your transmission BUT the truth is these guys did a great job and did it pretty quickly. I turned in my car late afternoon before Thanksgiving and got it back early Tuesday morning. Mr Lee and Sam were both great to deal with. Honestly, this was not the lowest price I received but the other place that quoted me took it to a guy who would rebuild it and they would install. Came in on recommendation for a transmission job on my 2016 Tahoe. Was quoted an average price and average turnaround 4-5 days. After 6-7 days go by I call to check the status and was informed that something is wrong and they have take the transmission down to check it again and it will be 4-5 more days. Ok fine. 6-7 more days go by and I get a call around noon that my truck is ready to come pick it up. So I drop everything and make arrangements to do so. Get to the shop no explanation from the owner on what the reason was for now having my car for almost 3 weeks. At this point I don't care. Get in my car start driving maybe 3-4 mIke's when I noticed my transmission is still jumping around 2nd gear. I try to ignore it but call the shop anyways to tell them what is going on. They tell me bring it back and they will check it. So I bring it back and go on a test drive with the owner and his laptop where he says nothing the whole time yet we can feel the trans hopping at the same speed and rpm. Get back to the shop and he says no codes to let it "acclimate" for 10 days. Fine. I get halfway home again on the freeway when the rpm's go through the roof, lose power and have to limp off the freeway and back to the shop. Owner says good check engine light is on 4-5 days. Long story longer, finally got my car back and now it is leaking from the back trans case. I have messaged the owner about it with no response. At this point I am exhausted with this shop. Mr. Lee and the crew are awesome! We recently bought a car and of course weren't to happy when we felt the transmission slipping. We remembered Mr. Lee from a long time ago when he diagnosed an issue with another one of our cars and brought it to him. So happy we made that decision. My hubs and I couldn't b happier. Thank you to Sam and Mr. Lee for helping me out!! My car was acting up, and I thought it was because I lagged on getting an oil change, I take it to a local mechanic and told him to do an oil change and tune-up. I advised him of my issues (keep in mind this is another transmission shop). He "supposedly" performs the oil change and tune-up. Then calls me to tell me that he is done, but when he took the car around the block...it was slipping. He wanted to keep it overnight to look into the matter. The next day, he calls me to tell me that it is the transmission and it will cost in the ball park of $4800. My heart fell into my stomach...what was I going to do?? Luckily I researched the matter and found Leeco Transmission. They looked my car over, gave me a very detailed diagnosis (complete with pictures that Sam texted me). Mr. Lee worked with me on the price because let's face it...people don't normally have a couple thousand lying around. I agreed and 2 days later, I had my car back. So far...so good! YEAH!!! These guys are the best... My transmission wouldn't shift into ANY gear. Had it towed here because they said they would try to fix it first instead of charging me for a whole new transmission. And they did... Most honest transmission service repair shop in town. Very happy I brought it here. Charged me for a transmission service fee only and drove away the same day I had it towed. Yes! They fixed it. . . Thank you Leeco and Sam. Coming back for all my transmission services. I highly recommend this shop before you go anywhere else. read more
