The food is perfectly flavored, fully cooked and served hot. The biscuits? EXCEPTIONAL.. The Wednesday special is the best deal.

Why don't they have this place in Columbus??? We stopped in here while whittling away a lazy Saturday and MAN, were we impressed. Not having been here before, I'm not sure if spacing had been increased to ensure COVID protection best practices, but the tables looked clean and sanitary. We decided to dine in and the young lady was kind enough to bring our first order to the table. My order was placed second and took a little longer because I wanted to try the fish & chips. We figured on a wait because the chicken was probably readily available, being their staple. We expected the fish to be prepared to order. I added a chicken thigh to get a sample of their "famous" chicken for myself. I'll work my way from the bottom up, reviewing the items. I tried some of my son's potato wedges. Very well seasoned and prepared to perfection; crisp, yet soft. It passed the "do you need to add ketchup?" test because it definitely didn't need it. Then I snuck a scoop of my wife's mac & cheese. It was decent. Not anything to write home about, but good enough to be liked among its customers. I did like the amount of cheese and overall density of it, in terms of how it chewed. I had mashed potatoes which were quite tasty with gravy that complimented it perfectly. Definitely something I'm going to have again. The final side item was the baked beans. I had to offer some of this to my family (along with the mashed potatoes) because it was much better than what we were used to in most restaurants. It had that southern kick to it which surprised me considerably. As I said before, I got a chicken thigh so I could get the experience and I have to admit that it was pretty good. Reminiscent of the way Kentucky Fried Chicken USED to taste, back when they were good (70s, early 80s). I hate to compare this to other restaurants, but I wanted to give you an idea. The skin had great taste to it and was the right temporature and moisture. In fact, it was right up there with the way your grandmother used to make it (well, MY grandmother); that kind of chicken from which you could take a bite, then suck the juices off of it before chewing. Great recipe. The MVP? That catfish! O-M-GOD! This place made some slammin' catfish! Piping hot (which is why I prefer to dine in as opposed to my meal losing its "feel" after a drive home and cool down period). The texture on this was amazing with some seasoning I can only liken to lemon pepper. I don't think it was, but it was amazingly flavorful. Nice and flakey on the insides, with fragrant steam emitting from it after you bit into it or separated it with your fork. As good as that tartar sauce was, it really didn't need it. I went back and forth, adding sauce to one bite, then omitting it the next. I could do this for a while because they gave me an exceptionally generous portion of it (see photo). I even got out of my "stingy old dad" mode and let dinner buddies split a piece, which made them regret not ordering it for themselves. We all agreed that we would make the 40-45 minute drive out here again to get some more because it was that good and worth the trip. If you're in the area of Indian Mound mall in Newark, make it your business to drive down Main Street and give this place a try. With any luck, they'll open up a spot in Columbus. In the meantime, I'll definitely be back. read more

I used to love this place..totally down hill!! Breasts undercooked, wings with hardly any meat and the $39.99 box was 90% wings! A total waste! The biscuits were burnt too! May have been ok if they would provide more than 4 butters for 8 biscuits! Will never return!!!! read more

I grew up in Springfield where we had 3 locations of Lee's Famous Recipe. This location is pretty solid. Consistency rules here from the very friendly crew, store cleanliness, and great food quality. This is one of the very few places in the Central Ohio area where you can get chicken Gizzards or Livers and their Jumbo Spicey Dippers are great to eat as a snack on the ride home to Columbus. You cannot go wrong with a meal at this location. read more

Why is the door locked and lobby closed at 5:50 on a weeknight. This is a big inconvenience and very inconsiderate of a business. Customers shouldn't be forced to wait in a huge line of cars and only be able to use the drive thru! Customer service sure has changed since Covid! Businesses only seem to care about what is easier for them now!! read more

They do not deserve a star. The internet and their website says the sales oven roasted children. We you go the or call they say they do not sale oven roasted chicken. They get a ride attitude when I ask. They say it was limited time only. That is bull. I worked for Lees in the 80s, 90s and part of 2000s. They always served oven roasted chicken. That is the only chicken I can eat. They did sale it just recently. I guess Ohio Lees don't want to sale it anymore. You all just lost a life time customer. read more

Hello fellow yelp users, You have come here to see the reviews of people that have either enjoyed or hated this restaurant, I'd like to say that this is the best restaurant I've been to since my early childhood. I simply created this yelp account just for the reason of leaving a five-star review telling you all about the amazing quality restaurant that is Lee's Chicken. Service: I ordered a 8 piece chicken meal (4 for me and 4 for my boyfriend) and I received my chicken within 5 minutes, and that includes coleslaw and mashed potatoes. Along with that there were multiple staff members that checked in on us about how our meal was and asked about our day. We also received free water refills that we didn't even ask for (but we're still very appreciative of that). Food: On top of the wide range of menu items, the chicken was definitely the best chicken I've probably ever had, and coming from someone in very stereotypically African American, I've had a lot of chicken in my life and none have hit home like Lee's did. The only thing that was a little sub par to me was the mashed potatoes but I can get over that because the coleslaw replaces mashed potatoes as my #1 side to go with chicken. Overall: I give this a 5/5 stars mostly because the of the way I was treated, I feel like I was part of a family and was invited with open arms. This place on 21st street in Newark Ohio is absolute crap! first I spent 40 minutes trying to place an order for pickup online (they use Seamless for this) and the screen just went blank after putting my credit card info in. I called Lees to see if the order went through and they said no, so I asked to place an order over the phone and I was told they can't do that and I would have to come in. I went in and found it was drive through only so I waited in line to place my order. when I made my order I was told the couldn't help me because they didn't have enough chicken for a family order. Don't waste your time dealing with this horrible place. I don't know why they are even in business, but I hope they go under soon! read more

My order is never correct. How hard is it? Ordered two 3 piece meals, spicy with sides. Got chicken original in 1 box and strips in the other. Not the pieces of chicken I ordered. Not 1 of the 4 sides was correct either. They cant even count change. Looked in my wallet to see my receipt. Didnt receive that, but my order was $10.50, I gave her $20.50 and got $12 change so I guess they cant count money either. This is the umpteenth time my order has been wrong. Done with this place. I have been wanting to go Lee's Famous Recipe Chicken for a long time, I enjoyed my Fried Chicken, biscuit, potato wedges, and mashed potatoes and gravy. I will go back there again. However, the manager was more engaging than the cashier that took my order. The cashier should be more engaging with the customers to the experience at Lee's more enjoyable. I am a fan of fried chicken, I've had a few types. Lee's chicken is good. The only thing I did not like is the biscuits are as bad as KFC's. They must be from previously frozen dough. I can't stand that taste. read more

Went into this location 2 days ahead of a picnic to put in an order for about 15 ppl, thinking planning ahead would be easier on ourselves and the employees. Not the case at all. Would've been better to have just walked in and gave them our order the day we needed it. The gentleman that took the order 2 days ahead was very pleasant and helpful. 2 days later my adult son showed up 15 mins before pickup time and went up to the counter to tell them he was there to pickup the order but that he also knew he was early. The employee yelled to the back he was there for the pickup. He sat down to wait for the order. After waiting 25 mins (10 mins past the set pickup time), he went back to the counter to check on the status...within about 3-4 mins, he finally got the order. He proceeded to point out the containers in front of the employee to make sure the order was complete ...he caught they only gave him half of the mashed potatoes ordered. He also asked if a large box was the 20 pieces of chicken and the employee said it was...found out later it was biscuits. After getting the order back to the park, we realized 20 pieces of 32 pieces of chicken ordered was not there. We opened 2 half gals of mashed potatoes in foil pans looking quite different from each other. One was creamy mashed potatoes, the other looked like unappetizing rice. We did not get any serving utensils (manager Mel later told my husband you had to request condiments. Didn't know condiments included serving utensils). We apologized to our guests and my husband called and talked to manager Mel. According to this managers definition, it is automatically yelling if you're simply conveying your frustrations about an inaccurate order and the length of time waiting for an order, even if you're not yelling. ‍ My husband went back to the restaurant to pick up the 20 pc. Told the employee he was there to pickup the chicken and they could talk to manager Mel about that. Mel came around the corner and said "you need to talk to me?"....he said "no, I'm just picking up the rest of my chicken". Mel proceeds to lecture him on everybody makes mistakes....agreed, although emphasis on PLURAL on mistakes. Surprisingly, my husband was made to feel he was the offender and eventually was even yelled at by Mel (real definition of yelling btw), AFTER she walked away from him so the whole restaurant could hear her. She told him she didn't need him to tell her how to do her job. At this point, after she yelled FIRST, it was fair game...he pointed out to her somebody needed to. Absolutely awful, the chicken was undercooked and appeared to have abscesses in the meat, puke! Potato salad and Mac and cheese were fine.

I grew up in Newark and Lee's was always a favorite. A friend of mine (who's friend brought her chicken from Newark a few months ago) asked me to grab her some chicken while I was in Newark the other day. Obviously it had made a lasting impression on her and I'm a big fan anyway so I grabbed a meal for her family and one for mine as well. The service was fast and friendly (we went through the drive thru), and the chicken was as good as I remembered. The biscuits and chicken and noodles are also delicious, I'm only giving 4 stars though because they are slacking on those potatoes. It's worth a visit. read more
