Both floors of MG feature some of the best art that Canada has to offer. The gallery is well laid out, pieces are well curated and there is a specific room dedicated solely to the thirty year history of the gallery featuring a 150 year span of the best pieces of MG's past. Well lit and spacious, a Fafard colt sculpture is in plain view in the far corner of one of the rooms. Amazing! Joe Fafard is a world renowned Saskatchewan artist who recently showed at the Glenbow Museum just last year and now a lucky Calgarian can actually purchase one of his pieces here. MG is one of the oldest galleries in the city and is unique in that it carries both historical and modern pieces. Their mandate is making gallery visiting fun, they encourage you to simply come in and look around. One of the nicest perks about MG is once you are set on a piece, MG will let you take it home for a trial run, and once you have purchased a piece and have outgrown it you are welcome to take it back to MG and trade it for another one. For this reason MG has a steady cliental base here in Calgary because they ensure that your art purchases coincide with the money that you have available and the pieces that are purchased are of value.

You know you're an adult when your artwork comes from places that don't also sell meatballs. I hit…read morethat milestone a couple of years ago when I bought a piece from one of the artists at GFA. I probably stop into this gallery 3 or 4 times a year to drool over art that I would like to buy, but can't seem to justify buying when I have so many other exciting things to spend money on, like snow tires or property tax. Or that cream that's supposed to get rid of those dark circles under your eyes. Even though I'm not able to purchase as often as I would like, every visit to the gallery is enjoyable. The staff are knowledgable and friendly. Artist shows that I have attended are always a good time, usually filled with interesting people, nibblies and wine, and again, the great staff. I'm on GFA's mailing list and receive emails from them notifying me of new artwork or events at the gallery and unlike other commercial emails that are sent too frequently or don't provide valuable info, GFA has achieved that perfect balance of keeping me informed without annoying the crap out of me. I will definitely be buying from this artist again, but I also like the style of many of the other artists that GFA represents. Yes, art is subjective and what I like may not be your thing. However, good customer service and friendly staff are critical to any business, and GFA gets it. 5/30

Every first Thursday of the month is free admission sponsored by Servus. I had to take advantage of this offer. Regular price admission is $18 per person. Why pay when you can go in for free. Plus I am not a tourist so might as well visit on a Thursday. All exhibits/galleries are open on the free admission day. The museum is very specifically tailored to the First Nation history and history of Calgary. They do have an interesting section on geology: rocks, minerals, stones, geode and etc. That gallery was slightly out of place compared to the rest of the museum/items on display. The first floor is really the gift shop and museum ticket/concierge/info center. Second floor is the first nation artworks. There are paintings and a few pieces of artwork. Third floor is about the oil and gas industry. As well, as the first settlement and the history of Calgary. Fourth floor is more tailored to the British Army and a section on the history of Africa. Everything is well documented, comprehensive and well referenced in the museum. Expect to spend about 2 hours minimum here. Overall, I enjoyed my stay. I don't think this museum changes much and so it is really one time visit. Note that no big backpacks are allowed into the museum and would be required to be checked in.
