I've gone to the Gutierrez location in Santa Barbara as well as the Linden location in Carpinteria. The Carpinteria location is larger but both locations seem to be staffed with genuinely happy and knowledgeable people that greet you when you come in and are helpful in finding that "something" that you and your pet need but can't quite say what it is. These folks understand pets and their people, and they know their stock. Really a pleasant, well stocked business, at least at these two locations. read more

Came in here a couple times, I found a toy my dogs have not destroyed. Every time we buy them soft toys they kill it. They always rip it apart and the stuffings all over the house. They sell these leathery looking toys that are double-stitched and when I asked them how durable they where I was told they haven't had anyone returned them yet. If your dogs love stop squeaky toys but rip through them within minutes you should also get that leathery looking toy too! I did post a picture with my dog playing with it. My dog had itchy skin and I originally came in for a cone, but the employee of the shop pointed my to these allergy support chews and after a couple days my dog completely stopped itching. Good sized, clean store, with lots of parking behind the building. I stopped here last week to pick up a particular brand of guinea pig food that my normal store was out of. I had called around and Lemos said they carried it and had some in stock and I made a special trip just for it. Quick browse of the store showed me they have a good variety of supplies for dogs, cats, and decent supply for small animals and birds. Some interesting foot and chew toys for the latter. The staff was helpful and friendly. My purchase was quick and easy and I found out Lemos is almost 27% cheaper than where I'd been buying my guinea pig food before! Wowza! I just received VIP service from Trisha! Let me tell you, with gas prices the way they are and the fact I live in Ventura, I really didn't want to make the drive. I called the store and asked if my husband (who would be in his work truck passing by Carpinteria on the highway) could run in & out quickly to pick up food for our dog? Trisha cut her break short and had the food ready and waiting so he could get back on the road. Not only that.... They always have what I need, where other pet supply stores fall short. My older dog needs a very specialized (and expensive) diet since being cured of cancer 2 years ago to optimize the chance it will not come back. The pricing isn't Lemo's fault, it's the brand. My older cats also need special diets, and Lemo's always has the right stuff in stock. Plus both special brands I need have a loyalty program through Lemos. If you buy so many bags, you get one free. When you have five pets, that's incredibly helpful. The staff are always quick to ask if you need help finding things. And they helped me find the natures miracle pet stain/odor remover that I now can't live without. Plus they're a smaller, local chain that I enjoy supporting even though some products can be found cheaper online. When you see that Nordstrom, Macy's, Sears, etc.. are no longer around if you need to get a household necessity same-day, can you imagine if specialty pet stores started disappearing (for pets that require hard to find items)?? This pet store is awesome and not just because they have everything you need for your dog and cat but mostly because the manager, Ray, is phenomenal. Above and beyond Customer service! Back story: Our dog has A super sensitive digestive system and is allergic to quite a few things. So about two years ago they helped us find the perfect food for her. We were so grateful for their help. Fast forward to today: We bought our regular bag of food a few days ago, but for some reason she wouldn't touch it. We thought maybe something was wrong with her tummy, tried to feed her other things, she would eat anything, but wouldn't touch the kibble. I called the store and they asked me several questions and immediately knew what the issue was. They took the old food back, notified the manufacture immediately, and gave me another bag that they were able to verify did not have the same problem. Thank you so much! My fiance and I happened to walk by this store for the first time after having eaten lunch in the area, and after seeing the huge selection of toys through the window, and me being incapable of passing by a pet store without buying my puppy at least one new toy. My first red flag was the giant A-frame sign they had outside the entrance, promoting their "veterinarian-supervised" non-anesthetic dental cleanings, which they said prevent teeth and gum problems (which is a blatant lie). First, it's terrifying that they are allowing non-veterinarians to do dental cleanings. Second, non-anesthetic dental cleanings aren't able to clean below the gumline where dental and periodontal issues occur. Yes, your pet's teeth will look cleaner from this surface-level scaling, but unfortunately it doesn't prevent dental disease from occurring and is not even remotely the same as a veterinary anesthetic cleaning. The AVMA, AAHA, and AVDC all oppose non-anesthetic (aka anesthesia-free) dental cleanings. The 2013 AAHA Dental Care Guidelines for Dogs and Cats clearly state "cleaning a companion animal's teeth without general anesthesia is considered unacceptable and below the standard of care." In fact, any veterinary practice that performs non-anesthetic dental procedures will lose their membership in the AAHA (American Animal Hospital Association). I decided to go in anyway because I didn't want to deny my dog toys due to the store's poor practices. We spent quite a bit of time looking at dog toys, most of which were about 20% higher in price than at Petco, Petsmart, Chewy, or Amazon where we tend to shop. Lemos' selection was much bigger than those stores however, so I got a couple toys that I hadn't seen at the other stores. I was hoping to find a dog bed, but they only had like 4 different dog beds and they were poor quality, so no luck there. Next, we checked out the dog treats and were dismayed that most of the treats they offer were made in places like Thailand, and not the US. As we were walking to check out, an older gentleman came into the stoer and asked about cat food, and we heard the sales guy tell him that a certain brand (I don't recall the name off-hand, I'll look it up and edit this with the name) was "the best they have." I'm incredibly well-versed in veterinary nutrition and did not recognize the brand name, so I asked my fiance if he knew of the brand since he practices veterinary cardiology, and he had not heard of it either. So when I got to the register, I asked who makes the brand, and an olderish blond woman with a bun said "it's made by a guy who worked at a pet store and the company that made the food he was feeding his cat went out of business, so he decided to try to remake it." WHAT. I was definitely not expecting the answer to be "some guy" when they were touting it as the best food they carry. Wow. So I asked her if the brand meets WSAVA guidelines. She said "what?" three times, so I had to explain World Small Animal Veterinary Association nutritional guidelines to her, which she said she never heard of. She then got defensive and told me she doesn't know about guidelines, but she knows what ingredients are in the food -- which I found to be an incredibly weird thing to say because what use is knowing what ingredients are in pet food when you have no actual knowledge of animal nutrition -- as evidenced by the fact that she knew there was regular olive oil in the cat food made by "some guy," not extra virgin olive oil like the sales guy originally said. (Okay?) She went on to say that she doesn't trust veterinarians (quite the bold stance to make considering Lemos literally has a vet clinic in their store every Sunday) because they sell Hill's PRESCRIPTION diets -- as in a science-backed, specially-formulated food for animals with medical conditions that can only be purchased with a prescription by a veterinary doctor, just like if you needed amoxicillin from your own doctor, hence PRESCRIPTION; newsflash: Chewy and other stores sell it too (you still need a prescription to buy it) -- and that she doesn't believe in science/research-backed pet food because they use things like corn. Which I then had to go on to explain that corn is actually a healthy ingredient, and unlike cats who synthesize taurine in its natural form, dogs do not, and corn is one of the few sources dogs can use to get the systeine and methionine they need to synthesize taurine, and a lack of taurine (in both cats and dogs) can lead to dilated cardiomyopathy (heart disease). I assume that at this point she ran out of nonsense points to argue and basically stormed off. We finished checking out and wished the older gentleman buying cat food good luck. There's no chance we will ever shop at this store again. The lack of animal nutrition knowledge of the Lemos store reps here is beyond ignorance, it's toeing the line of negligence. read more

The staff at Lemos in Carpinteria were fantastic. I bought a caged kennel, and the staff put together the kennel in minutes, and sent me on my way. We removed kennel from vehicle, and noticed a small crack in pet tray. Not normally a big deal, but this doggie that will be using kennel loves to make a mess and she would most likely leak through this pet tray. Went back immediately to store, but they had closed. The salesman noticed me at door and came to assist. He told me to bring kennel back for replacement. I returned a few days later and the *manager knew of the predicament, and he assembled another kennel for me and did the switcheroo quickly and efficiently. Friendly, decent selection and fair prices. I like that the staff here are friendly and if you bring your well-behaved pet in, they're friendly to the pets, too. Cute. The selection is pretty good. I'd like them to carry maybe a larger range of more natural products. The natural foods they have now are pretty much natural in name only and are canned and packaged by larger distributors, some of which are dubious when it comes to recalls and quality. But I get that they carry what sells and what can be kept at a certain price point. Speaking of prices, I don't think they are expensive at all. The food I've purchased here is the exact same price as elsewhere (La Cumbre Feed, The Wharf) so I'm not sure how a bag of food would be $20 more than at the Wharf unless it was a mistake, perhaps. The toys are the same price range as other stores, too and they have a much larger selection than at the SB store and also than PetCo. Another plus point is that they seem to have a LOT of bird stuff. I don't have a bird, but I know sometimes bird stuff can be hard to find outside a specialist store. read more
