Very nice people again, but they will treat you like it's your first time shooting a gun (which is great if you just bought your first gun). Visited my parents this past weekend for July 4th so I wanted to check out a range I heard about…read morenear College Station. All of the other rifle ranges I've been to in the North Houston area have been absolutely dreadful so I was hoping for a change of pace. The Cawthon Cartridge Club (CCC) is located near Navasota, TX and about 20 miles from Aggieland. The range is on a huge swath of land, I reckon about +800 acres. They have a 200 yard range, numerous uncovered tactical bays with just a few steel targets, several pistol bays and a 5-stand area for shotgun. The entire area (including berms) was covered in a lush green grass that was freshly mowed. The roads were crushed limestone. The owner roves the grounds in a John Deere Gator UTV but other than that there were no Range Safety Officers. I was only interested in shooting long distance so proceeded to the rifle range. Newcomers are restricted to 500 yards and below until they quality with the owner. There were steel hanger targets every 50 yards and at the 500 yard line, there were about 8 different steel targets of varying sizes. The grass was very neatly trimmed and gently sloped downward. Beyond the 500 yard line were targets every 100 yards until 1200. The shooting area was up on a hill with a nice metal shade structure. There were some rickety old benches but I chose to shoot prone. There was a nice breeze blowing into our faces which really helped to beat the brutal heat and humidity. Out beyond the 1200 yard target was a farmer working a field in his tractor. The owner advised us of this beforehand and asked us to hold fire until he was out of sight. This was annoying as the farmer was constantly behind the target area; fortunately I had two people with me, one to spot my targets and the other to keep an eye on the farmer. Hopefully this is not a regular occurrence. I've never shot at a range this nice before. They didn't have as many steel targets as ETTS in Waxahachie but the grounds were much nicer. Membership is $750/yr but they let me pay only for the remainder of 2016. Guests are $25 each and you are normally restricted to two.

Place is well kept. No green tip allowed. Not being a member meant I was only allowed on the 100…read morerange. There's a metal folding chair and a bench that's too high for it at the 100 so I just went prone instead. So if you're not a member don't expect much. Otherwise, I understand there's some decent long shots to be had there with covered shelters and such. I don't recall the membership dues but it's several hundred dollars.

My annual membership renewed on a credit card that I didn't want to use. The membership…read morecoordinator, Chris, assured me that I could switch my membership charge to a different credit card. I let him charge the membership on an alternate credit card, but the original charge was not reversed at that time. I was told that the owner, Terry Flick, was the only person who could reverse charges, but he was not available. I was assured the money would go back to my original card in a few days. At this point I was billed a total of $1800 for one $900 membership. One week later I called to ask when the original $900 credit would be issued, and I was told that the owner had been unavailable but that he would issue the credit that day, and it would take a few days to see it on my credit card. My credit card payment was due before then, so I had to pay the bill for $900 or pay interest. Another full week had passed before I had to again call Chris about the credit that I was supposed to have seen 10+ days earlier. Chris insisted that the owner had issued the credit seven days earlier when I had called last time, but my credit card company had no record of any charge reversal attempts. I finally sent an email to the owner asking for the credit that had been promised two weeks earlier. I also demanded a credit for the second charge, because one or both of them lied to me about the credit. This business is not trustworthy. The owner responded to my email stating that their policy states they do not give refunds. I guess I missed the part in the policy where they state that they reserve the right to charge twice for one annual membership. Terry Flick did credit both cards that 14th day, and he expressed in his email how generous he was to overlook his policy on refunds in my case. I suppose his expectation is that I should be thankful that he eventually refunded the extra money that he tried to keep??? They have a nice facility. I had hoped to enjoy another year of membership, but I prefer to not do business with liars and thieves. Beware.

Again, beautifully done. Today I picked up a S&W 686 that I dropped off for a tune up and to get a shotgun fixed. Great service. The trigger job on the 686 is incredible. So smooth and crisp.
