I love walking on the trails and this one is pretty safe especially for women. The parking is next to the trailhead and you can either go left or right, either way is quite open and in my opinion very safe for women. Lots of wildlife, saw a lot of cool birds and turtles at the pond. People were fishing, there were tons of wildflowers! Overall such a great trail! read more

This is my favorite trailhead yet. I've only been to a few recently but this one is well covered, well maintained and patrolled. The pathway is paved and wide with some narrow areas but still beautiful. Expect some inclines here and there, spaced out nicely. read more

What an underwhelming experience was the Rim Trailhead. The start of the trail looked promising. Perfect parking, behind the Rim, clean, overlooking some extensive greenery, and a variety of plants and flowers, heading down the trail. Yet, all that beauty stops being appreciated after a couple of minutes of walking. I am going to start by stating the obvious: Texas is an extremely hot state. Summers here are downright sizzling, and it is nearly impossible to walk anywhere without some sort of shade. It is even hotter when walking a tiny maltipoo wearing a permanent fur coat. So imagine the discontent, after walking a couple of feet on a CEMENT trail, which nicely reflected the sun at us, without a tree, limb, or branch as coverage. I knew I had misjudged the heat and this trail, when it started feeling as if we were walking on the center of the sun. After stopping at the underpass, taking some pictures, and previewing what could be seen of the rest of the trail (all cement and no coverage), I decided that it was not worth the heat. Thus, this little adventure ended with me carrying a panting 12-pound dog back to my car. It certainly made for some intense exercise! Sadly, this trail surrounds a great amount of land. It looks down into a valley of trees and plants. There are also some train tracks and a train, but they cannot be seen from the trail, only from the highway, which is ironic. I could also hear running water, but could not find the source of the sound. If this trail had been left in a more natural state, without all the construction and over planning, it certainly would have made for a worthier walk. read more

Wonderful paved trail for biking, jogging, or walking your dog. Trailheads every 3 to 5 miles. Some include parking, bathrooms, water, and bicycle repair tools and air pumps. But bring water with you just in case. Currently, the northernmost point is near Loop 1604 and IH-10 and the southernmost is at NW Military Drive just inside Loop 410 and a bit south of the Via Park and Ride at Ingram Road. (it's a secret, but they are *currently* extending the trails to The Rim shopping center and will eventually connect to the North Salado Greenway Trail in Shavano Park!) Other than the fact that the trails are paved, you are still in the wilderness but within the city limits. Many deer can be spotted on this trail and they are very used to people, so photo opportunities are ample. Trails are 8 to 10 feet wide and in great condition. Walkers/runners stay to the right, bikers pass on the left and please let the pedestrians know when you are passing. There are unpaved trails just off to the side for those mountain bikers who want a little more excitement. Just wanted to add that the segment from The Ingram Rd trailhead to the SW military drive trailhead--about a two mile stretch--is probably the most verdant spot along this entire greenway. Of course, that might have something to do with all the rain we've gotten this far in 2016, but it's super pretty. And cool! Like as in cool air because of all the shade. I'd recommend this side of the trail as opposed to the much more busy NW side. Also, watch out for spandex wearing hoodlums going way too fast on their bicycles (i.e. Middle aged men past their prime with no hope of seeing a Tour de France but spent two large on all the gear anyway. Some prolly spent more on their spandex outfits than their bicycles themselves). Some of these folks (not all! There are some conscientious cyclists in SA, but they're few and far between) have dreams of grandeur and claim the entire right-of-way, especially on the downhill segments. It never fails, I always run on the right side of the trail but have to literally jump out of the way as a cyclist takes a corner way too fast and nearly collides with me. Protip: take your spandex, oakleys, and over-priced Cannondale out into the hill country or along highway 211. Sincerely, everyone else who enjoys not having to worry about losing a spleen because of an entitled cyclist hogging the more than wide enough green way. *sharing is caring* read more

When I want to throw a variety of scenery into my workout or feel like utilizing my geosenses for geocaching, I usually head out to LCG. The main trailhead is located here on Mainland Road; however, there are about 4 other trailheads that can be accessed at different points on the creek: 1. The new Valero trailhead by 1604 & I-10 (next to the Drury Inn) 2. The Buddy Calk trailhead on the corner of Babcock & Spring Rain 3. O.P Schnabel Park 4. Leon Vista by Rochelle & Whitby Rd (FYI - the parking area for this trailhead is pretty small) Each trailhead has restrooms, maps of the park and different trails available depending on how much you want to be challenged (i.e., paved or natural) My geobuddy and I spent this past Sunday caching off the new Valero trailhead - unfortunately, it required bushwhacking so we were off the trails for the majority of our visit. Awesome paved trail very close to the medical district! The pavement is very well kept, and a great place for an evening walk, jog, bike etc. Not much of a "hike" so much as a sidewalk through the wilderness. There are plenty of signs to keep you oriented and let you know how far the next trailhead is. There are a few trails off the paved area that are fun to explore or find a cozy spot to read a book. It does get crowded with bikers so mind your lane and listen for those passing from behind. When we went we saw a few forest puppies and interesting birds. Bottom line: Clean paved trail near the medical district, great for evening walks! read more

I had to run 12.5 miles this morning. Someone shoot me please. My husband told me to try out Leon Creek, a paved but a nature-esque feel to run along to. So my friend and I hit it up at 7am, before the sun was even up. This park is a hidden treasure. If you go to Walmart on Bandera, take Mainland right before (coming from 410) and go all the way down to the Mainland entrance. Although they only have about 6-8 miles charted out, it is easy to run in and out of the park into neighborhoods for the extra mileage. We saw roughly 30 deer, a couple bunnies, and lots of other active people starting around 9am. Although I didn't have the best run of my career, it was a nice place to complain in and we will most definitely be back. read more

Recently moved from Austin, and my heart hurt leaving the gorgeous greenbelts and Ladybird Hike and Bike trail. I miss it so much! Behold, the Leon Creek Greenbelt!!!!!!! This trail is gorgeous, with very limited interaction with city streets (yay!). Paved all the way, with some off trail possibilities, you can totally get away with a road bike, hybrid, or mountain bike. It would be great to run as well. Not too much traffic, and plenty of trail heads to park at. Also, a few watering holes to let the dogs swim a little. Lush and gorgeous scenery, I'm a huge fan of the LCG! Remember to be courteous, clean up after yourself and your pets, and alert others when you pass on the left! read more

Update: Leon Creek Greenway going south under Bandera Rd has opened up. This adds about 4-5 miles to the Greenway. It stops at Grissom, and you can see that they are constructing the rest of the greeway past Grissom. From 1604 to Grissom, Leon Creek Greenway is about 10-12 miles, roundtrip total 20-24 miles. It's a real workout! Plus for mountain bikers, there are even more mountain bike trails. Enjoy! Try to get there early.. it seems that people are now hearing more about the greenways, and it can get very packed on the weekends. Bikers.. advise that you buy a bike bell (I do).. this works much better than hollering at people. Or worse, telepathically trying to get other people to know you are there. Ding! Ding! I come here frequently with my dog to walk/jog on the trails. I love coming during off times or cold weather when there's less people there. Sometimes there are so many bikers on the trails it gets stressful. For the most part people are pretty nice and respectful. The trails are well kept. read more

Greenway? More like wet way right now, LOL. Love the Leon Valley Greenway in general. Have seen it grow and add connectors well before the Grissom trailhead even opened. Lived a little closer then and walked the heck out of just about all the available sections. My shots and review this time center on Ingram Trailhead abutting a VIA station near Ingram mall. This section has grown/extended well now too. With the parking, that makes this one of the most diverse sections. So many options from this one spot. Unfotunately the rains have dumped alot of water so the 2 crossings North and South are a bit deep with fast moving water at the moment. No worries, it will subside soon. My high water pics are of the crossing going to Grissom or Cathedral Rock. It's still a good 15-20 min walk, and then you can walk back and go to the south non-crossing zone... walking can take up to an hour. Enjoy all the wild life. Cheers. read more

Walked the Valero to Fox Creek section this afternoon. The LCG is a home run for SA! But hikers beware, there's more bike traffic than walkers, so stay to your right. And bikers; I've always supported your rights in SA, but courtesy is two-way. A little "on yer left" when whispering by at 25 mph is much appreciated And to the person who left the porta-potty at Fox Creek; for shame, you're deplorable. This is a great place for a walk, run, or cycling. There are miles of paved and unpaved trails. The trails are easy to follow. It's practically impossible to get lost. Depending on what time of day you are on the trail, there is a lot of shade. The afternoon tends to have more sun, but there are shady sections. In the evenings, you can see lots of deer. There aren't a lot of amenities on the trail so bring plenty of water. The trail is dog friendly but be sure to clean up after your furry friend. read more

Great place to run or bike without the worry of cars. Over 14mi of paved trail as well as off road trails if you are an adventurous biker. I really enjoy it, but some bikers can get a bit big-headed and feel that they have the right away over pedestrians, forcing you off the path. Fun to watch the wildlife! read more

If San Antonio floods expect Leon Creek Greenway to stay flooded for days or weeks. The path is easily four person wide, or one person in either direction leaving the middle for a bike to pass. You don't find 20mph bicyclists here, so it's quite safe for runners. I DO NOT recommend coming before sunrise / after sunset unless you have a flashlight and one or two companions, as the path is not lit. I believe at its current state, it runs from Ingram Park Mall's VIA bus center (southwest SA) to Drury Inn (north northwest SA) for a total of 14 miles with one major creek crossing at Bandera. read more

I bike out here almost daily. I prefer the newer section near Ingram/Leon Valley. It's more open and you are able to see people coming up on you better, since I bike this helps tremendously. Love all the new areas that they have added to the trail. Cannot wait until it extends under 410 more. It would be helpful if there were more water stops along the trail just because it is Texas and 119 degrees during the Summer, but the trail signs DO let you know to come prepared with water/hydration. The sunsets along the trail are always beautiful, especially after a rain. :) read more

Love this area. Twelve continuous miles of exercise. Whether I am going for a jog or walking the pup, these are awesome trails. You can stay on the paved areas or venture off road and enjoy more quiet areas. People are usually very friendly and social. Lots of deer to see as well. Saturday morning can be a little crowded at times but still plenty of space to stretch your legs. It could use a water fountain at the Mainland entrance but this is only a minor inconvenience. Most are very respectful but there are a few jerks blaring their music instead of using headphones respectfully. read more

* Address is incorrect - navigate to the Drury Inn on I-10 and 1604 and you'll find the trailhead next to the parking lot. Some people take showers to clear their minds, relax, just take some time to themselves. I ride the Greenway. The only difference is, once my mind is clear, it'll take another hour or so to get back to my car (in the bathroom, you'd just have to turn off the shower faucet). The cemented trail is perfect for road cyclists, runners and walkers alike. If I'm not mistaken, the whole thing spans a little over 15 miles from the Valero trailhead to Ingram Rd. There are a lot of little loops within the trail you can take to add to your mileage, and for those with hybrid/mountain bikes, near OP Schnabel there's a nice dirt trail off the side of the main trail that'll get your adrenaline running. Speaking to OP Schnabel, you can definitely ride to OP Schnabel from here and enjoy the trails over there - they're all connected. Trail volunteers wear yellow and ride the trail throughout the day - they keep emergency bicycle maintenance equipment and help those with flats, etc. Still. Bring your equipment! You don't want to be doing the walk of shame for 15 miles. Overall my peeps on the bike are pretty good with bike etiquette - except for this one rider I swear is intentionally an obnoxious prick every time I see him - and runners/walkers are very safe. Unless you're on the trail at night. There are zero lights here, and I've heard of some events happening in the past, so unless you're in a group AND have appropriate lights, please don't come here alone at night. Very scenic. When it floods or after it rains, it usually floods in two parts of the trail (1) one mile out from Valero, where there's a narrow turn and a mirror, and (2) 5 miles or so before Grissom. Summer is hot, so bring plenty of water. To my knowledge there are only 2 or 3 water fountains in between Valero and Ingram. Winter has a nice breeze, layer up or wear a windbreaker, because you're going to sweat, and then freeze even more because your sweat will be cold. I usually come across harmless snakes when I'm on this trail. But don't bother them and they won't bother you. Happy cardio-ing! read more

Absolutely one of my favorite places to be! Leon Creek Greenway is an excellent place for runners, walkers, bikers, rollerbladers, or any other preferred mode of transportation. These trails go on for MILES, which I absolutely love since it's a great place for those who are training for long distance runs. There's a lot of critters that you may encounter while you're on the trails. The cutest ones were probably two baby armadillos and the strangest was a large crawfish in the middle of a hot blazing pavement. (It's definitely a mystery how that crawfish got there tbh.) I've been going on these trails for years and I've always been greeted by polite visitors! I never had an issue with safety either since there are always trail stewards that bike frequently. I highly recommend to slather yourself in sunblock since most of the trails don't have shade and you're being cooked alive (I have personal accounts of this lol). read more

One of the best trails in San Antonio by far!! If you enjoy the outdoors and a stroll or even a run is an activity you enjoy then you will love this trail! The entire Leon Green Way is a paved trail. The scenery is by far second to none. The trail embodies a very nature friendly environment that stretches for miles. I often find myself here quite early and there are hardly any other runners. A slight down side is if you are a early bird or late evening runner the trail itself is not well lit. I finally made it out to Leon Creek Greenway for a run here one weekend morning. I was more than impressed. The main trail is paved and quite wide, and the scenery was beautiful on a gorgeous spring day. The patronage was a mix of runners, walkers, and bikers, the large majority of whom seemed to have good trail etiquette. I started my run from the entrance on Babcok, and ran to the Bandera entrance before doubling back. The run was fairly flat, with a few rolling hills. I was amazed to find I didn't feel like I was in the city. Unless I was running by the few houses that line the trail, or under a city street overpass, I could have been in the country for how it felt. I did not stray from the paved path, but there were many unpaved trails that branched off that seemed perfect for a little mountain biking. The trail is dotted with small ponds. It was a wonderful break from my normal street runs through my neighborhood. I do wish there were more water stations located on the trail, the only ones I saw were at the parking locations. read more

I really like this greenway. This is one of the most well kept green ways I have gone to. Perfect for biking, running, walking or just to go exploring! This is one of the green ways I go to the most due to location, it's well kept and has a lot of shade for those that like to be outdoorsy but not in the sun toooo much. Granted there are a lot of places that have sun but there are plenty of trees to give some shade. There are so many trails on and off trail that you can go on and it extends really far. There are even lakes/water that pass through. There are also great resting places and water fountains. Some of the issues is that when biking be careful of pedestrians that are walking with headphones or walk their dogs NOT on a leash (even though the rules say leashes are required) as they tend to not hear you if you tell them you are passing or some of their dogs tend to wander. There are a few times kids and dogs jump out in front so be careful! It also gets packed when they host marathons and some areas can get flooded after it rains. read more

The Greenway is one of my favorite places in San Antonio. I am amazed at how much it has been expanded. Its the perfect place for a long run. I have participated in the Roger Solers Texas Medclinic Half Marathon the past two years. This is a great place for a half. The Greenway is out and back so you won't get lost. There are trails for those who prefer to go off the paved area. For most of the path, it doesn't feel like you're in San Antonio. It feels like a separate country area that San Antonio forgot to turn into houses. Carrry your own water! Water fountains aren't exactly in abundance here. read more

My two kids and I went for a short walk along the paved trail and ventured off the path for some light adventure. This greenway is excellent for bike riding for many reasons but that is another review. I repeatedly warned my kids to stay to the right in order to avoid the riders and they were plentiful. We entered the greenway thru the Ingram Park transit side so we crossed over the bridge. There is so much trash and graffiti at times that it takes away from the experience somewhat but I always enjoy myself there. There were several benches and boulders placed strategically where the Kids caught a break. The trails were well marked. We're looking forward to hitting it up on bikes next time. read more

I love Leon Creek Greenway. I love that they have wide paths that accommodate both bikers and runners/walkers. I love that they have handy dandy little mileage markers every quarter of a mile, so if you don't feel like running with a GPS (or you forget) you don't have to worry about it! I also love that everyone on the path is always super friendly. I've rarely had a bad experience on the LCG, with the exception of when it rains and floods the path. That just makes me sad, and I wish there were alternate paths when it floods, as it does often during some seasons in SA. Anyway, this greenway is a great feature to SA, and I hope everyone has the chance to experience it. It's a beautiful place to experience the various greenery that San Antonio has to offer, and all in the middle of the city as well! *Also, there are multiple entrances to LCG, so make sure you look it up. The Valero trailhead is usually pretty packed on Saturday mornings, as they often have meet-ups, 5ks, or random groups running and biking, so parking can be tight. We used to park in the Drury/Applebee's lot that is next to the trailhead, but there are signs all over saying they will tow - so do so with caution! The trailhead off of Hausman Rd is usually less packed and has plenty of parking. read more

Fantastic trail located within the city, but if you didn't know better, you'd swear you were in the country! The trail snaked along Leon Creek, away from roads, traffic, and other signs of civilization. Much of the path was shaded by a nice vegetation canopy, and helped keep me cool and out of the sun. I stayed on the concrete path, but it looked like there were other non-paved trails to off-road, if you're in that. Several areas were hilly around OP Schnabel Park, and my thighs reminded me just how out of shape I am! There were deer everywhere, and most were so used to human presence, they didn't even spook when I rode by them. Even though it was 2 pm on a Monday afternoon, the trail was busy with joggers, hikers, and cyclists, so be careful around blind corners and hairpin turns! read more

The Greenway section past Grissom Road now goes all the way to VIA's Ingram Transit Center. Yes, the trails are still rough - but I'm proud of our city for this creative use of these mostly dry creekbeds. Impressed at how far they've been built out, relatively quickly. Like the other reviewers, I'd love to see more water available, but in the meantime, bring your own. As for cyclists "versus" walkers - c'mon, we can all get along. Such a nice trail, at peak times we all have to slow down and be extra nice and forgiving. Turns out San Antonio does have a fitness and nature-loving community, so let's help make it great. At least one transit cop there at the Ingram center was vigilant about enforcing the "no bikes past this point" at their trailhead last night. He emerged from the empty transit center, crossed the empty parking lot to teach me about the "no bikes past the trailhead rule. I hope he was motivated to keep me safe, and not just bent on hassling Greenway users. I hope VIA knows that cyclists and walkers on the Greenway can be their strong allies. read more

Leon Creek Greenway is lovely. There are so many trailheads, so starting at different points will allow you to see the most without having to worry about the distance too much. The scenery is beautiful with paved paths: mostly concrete with some asphalt sections. There are winding curves, plenty of shade from the surrounding trees, natural wildflowers, (depending on the time of day--morning--lots of deer) and of course Leon creek in view through many sections of the trail. When I was training for a few half marathons, it is absolutely perfect, you'll pass several trailheads and see a lot of the trail. People on the trail are friendly and supportive, especially other runners and walkers. People on bikes usually will ring bell or will let you know when they're behind you so you're not startled. That being said, be aware of your surroundings, as some aren't so courteous. I used two trailheads as starting points mostly: Mainland trailhead, and Buddy Caulk, but I prefer the Buddy Calk trailhead (which is the next trailhead you end up at if you start at mainland and go opposite of Bandera Rd.) I like Buddy Caulk because there are a couple of small art installations (a butterfly sculpture if you head left from that trailhead as a starting point) and a pond/lake that way as well, or turn right for a large bridge with nice overlook and some small art along the street along the way. And no joke I've spotted several roadrunners near UTSA blvd! I'm only a fan on non busy days (during "colder" months) and because it's the only thing available in SA that's really really close to my house. During nice spring or summer days, it gets pretty packed around OP park/Bandera Walmart area. People don't know much about trail ettiquette; had close calls with cyclists, dog sniffs (which I don't mind if i'm walking/strolling), dog poo (on pavement), and groups that don't know how to single file/move out of the way. Do like the unpaved parts for a bit more of a private walk but you do have to watch your step. read more

Love this place, been using these trails before they became useable paved trails, has trails for mt bikers. Weekends are packed, with lots of walkers, runners/joggers, some skate boarding, and bikers (speed limit has been placed for bikers since some like to go fast but not a good idea when you have families with small children). I've been to almost all of the trails in San Antonio, they all have their unique parts. Leon trail is still being expanded but i have recently finished a 30+ mile bike ride from La Cantera on I-10 all the way down to NW loop 410 & W Military Drive behind Bubbas 33. A couple of parks lead off the main Leon Trial, one at Babcock & Spring Rain Rd (Bamberger park, and when you walk down a way going under Babcock road passing a pond you will see new development, this will take you to the back of subdivision where they have outdoor work out equipment). Then you have OP Schnabel Park on Bandera & Brun, you'll see plenty of wildflowers, Deer's (came upon one that was just born), peacocks, armadillos, hawks, roadrunners, walking sticks, butterflies, turtles, some quails of some sort, plenty to see and enjoy. People bring their pets (sad that some owners don't pick up after them), if you read the signs it says that the water along with pets poo run into our drinking waters aquifer. Now they have free exercise programs at the parks (www.saparksandrec@com). Can get flooded at times, bring plenty of water/bug spray/sun block. read more

I use the park for bird watching, wildlife viewing and photographing. It has a great variety of specie and habitat from open scrub fields to oak stands to creek riparian patches. Black Vultures, Chickadees, Cardinals, Peewees, Wrens, Mockingbirds, Brown Creepers and more can be seen. The trail is heavily used by joggers and mountain bikers so watch out if your always looking up like me. My only complaints are there is no map of the trail system available and parking is limited. Also there is an awful amount of trash in the park from flash flooding that blights the whole "nature park" theme. read more
