There were trailhead signs on either side and both were clearly marked. We decided to start with the Savannah Loop which is approximately 2.5 miles long. There are about eight differently trails of varying levels of intensity. The trail was clearly defined and well maintained. The signs make it easy to follow the trail and find your way around. There were quite a few hikers this morning, many with pets on leashes. Everyone was pretty friendly and courteous. The trail was very peaceful and very quiet for the most part. We didn't see much wildlife, but we found some lovely views. We will definitely come back for the other trails.

Overall the park is clean and the trails are quite wide that connect with one another. Be careful if you go off the pavement and onto unpaved trails as they could be rife with bugs/mosquitoes. I got off path on one trail and the bugs swarmed me and got me good on my neck and shoulders. Bugspray is definitely a must use and make sure you have proper foot attire. Very scenic, you'll get your nature fix at this one.

Jack White Trailhead…read more Located near Splashtown, but on the other side of IH-35. As of now, you can only walk/bike south on Salado Creek Greenway from here, but plans are to connect this to the John James Park Trailhead (to the north) sometime in the future. It goes as far south as Southside Lions Park near Roland Rd. and Rigsby Ave. But plans are to extend it further south as well. Parking is sparse (so I subtracted one star) - I think I counted about 25 parking spots. I was there on a weekday morning, so I am not sure how crowded it gets on the weekends. Like some of the other trailheads on the Greenway system, this one has an air pump and a tool kit for your bike. Really nice. There is port a potty, a water fountain and even a water fountain/bowl for the dogs. But if you hit the trail and head south, you won't find any more for about two miles when you get to Pletz County Park and then two miles after that when you get to MLK Park. But they are not located on the trailheads - you will have to venture into the parks to get to the water and the restrooms. If you know me, I'm sure you're sick of hearing me preach about this, but the Howard W. Peak Greenway Trails System is SUCH an awesome system for our city and not many people are aware of them, even though they are ALL around town. They have a wide walkway which is shared by bikes, runners and walkers and it's very nice and peaceful. At some points, there was a separate trail for dirt and mountain bikes as well. We saw so many deer! Nicely maintained and feels safe since there are people coming by every few minutes.

I'd say this is moderate as some areas are very rocky, you get your heart rate going but can still keep a conversation. Some areas are heavily wooded and hilly, and other areas are flat with gravel. Little areas of water and tiny waterfalls are pleasant. There is construction going on and you can head that in the distance, but you can still hear the the bears and wildlife area. I definitely want to come back and check out the other trailheads here. Wear some good shoes as it can be slick.

Follow the road around the pond and you'll find maps and a shelter, plus the trailhead to go north/upstream along the South Salado Creek Greenway Trail, part of the Howard W. Peak Greenway Trail System, towards Comanche Park and Covington Park. If you walk along the pond downstream, over the footbridge, you'll find a trail marker, a crosswalk, and a turnoff to a newer trail section of South Salado Creek. If you see a set of switchbacks, you know you're on the right path. This trail goes about 3 miles to a trailhead on Southeast Military Dr.
