I reached out to Joseph Lepera when confronted with a particularly nasty and painful employment issue occurring at my new place of employment, a Silicon Valley tech giant. In this instance, without requesting consultation fees, Joseph was extremely generous with his time, working to understand my case, and our chances for success if a legal case were to be pursued. I was also guided in ways to pursue resolution without legal representation. Joseph concluded that he would be willing to pursue my case, (on retainer with no cost unless there was judgement in our favor), notwithstanding the fact it was absolutely no sure thing he was still on board for what he felt was "fighting the good fight". In a word: WOW. Recently, I was "let go" from my job. Such a nice way to put it. I had only one disappointment with him: I was asking his counsel about an issue relating to a transgender client of ours, and he said things about that student that were offensive to me, disparaging our client for wanting to use the pronoun "they." I find this kind of bigoted behavior unprofessional. To Joseph's credit, when I explained why trans people sometimes want to use that pronoun, and stated that I thought it was respectful and supportive to do so, he spontaneously started attempting to use the proper pronoun. So I give him an A for effort and for being willing to try to learn more about how to respect and support people who differ from the cultural norm.
