I was attracted to Street Monkey because it was Cambodian food which is rare to find but familiar in that it was Southeast Asian. We started with cocktails. I had a Lucy Liu which was delicious and had a little kick to it. The Thai basil was great counterpoint. The service was helpful and prompt and the gentleman knew the menu well. We started with the pork belly and shrimp chip combo that was in a slight sauce of red curry. The spices and flavor were delicious. We also ordered the pickled vegetables which was refreshing contrast to the meat. We also ordered stuffed chicken wings and green papaya salad. We ended with the desert of mango with sticky rice. Went here while in Montreal this past week. I was excited to see Cambodian options and so we gave it a shot at the chef counter! We had a great experience. My favorite dishes were the lamb and the eggplant, but everything was great. Not pictured: a corn and tapioca dessert that really brought unique flavor and texture. The cocktails were creative and fun, and really unique. Service was solid, vibes were good. It's shared plates that come out as they're ready.. don't be like the table near us that insisted on coursing everything out at the same time for each of their guests which seemed like an insane request based on this menu. The kitchen staff worked really well together and were very fun to watch. I would definitely return and would recommend for solo dining, pairs, and small groups. read more

Really love the vibe here very unique and cool atmosphere. I went on a Wednesday night and was only offered seating at the bar, even though several two-seat tables were available. We assumed they were reserved, but they remained empty until closing, which felt a bit shady. That aside, the food was great prepared fresh on the spot with a unique flavor profile. Everything is served tapas style for sharing, and while the quality is there, I found it a bit pricey for the portion sizes. We made a reservation here after receiving a recommendation from a bartender the evening before. As we were only in town for a few days to celebrate our wedding anniversary, we wanted tips from locals! This spot did not disappoint! Top notch service and the food and drinks are amazing. While vacationing with our adult kids and their spouses, we wanted to try something different and decided on the fixed menu here to satisfy that wish. Even though we had a couple of hesitant participants due to their concerns that the food would be too spicy or too out of their comfort zone, it turns out that it made everyone's list of "What would we recommend to someone visiting Montreal". There is no higher praise to give to an establishment! The staff was professional and personable and handled our table of 8 with ease. We ordered numerous cocktails and I did not hear a single complaint about any of them. I can only vouch for the Yuzu Snooze Yuzu Lose drink and would certainly recommend it! In hindsight, I should have taken some time to photograph our food; however, I was in the moment and just enjoying each dish as it was presented. The service is consistently attentive, the waiting staff is knowledgeable, friendly and courteous. There's a nice ambiance no matter which evening of the week, the music is never too loud that you have to scream to be heard. This is my fourth time at this awesome restaurant, and it was my boyfriend's first time visit. We are celebrating his birthday. The service is top notch by our waitress. Since the dishes are tapas style, we order four items (chicken wings, fried papaya salad, lamb chops and fish with amok sauce along with sticky rice) and with my litchi tequila cocktail called Pearl Necklace. This place was my second dinner, but I was in Montreal for a short trip and didn't want to pass up the opportunity. I wasn't expecting to eat so much for a second dinner or to be so satisfied with every dish from beginning to end. Ambiance: urban, funky, and cool but without any pretense or pretentious staff. Service: the staff had the courtesy to call me an hour before my arrival to let me know the restaurant was running out of a couple dishes. This level of courtesy is completely unheard of in the states. After arrival, the staff proved to be knowledgeable of every dish's ingredients, composition, and complementary dishes making fantastic recommendations. Food: to say I was thoroughly impressed would be a total understatement. With a second dinner, I didn't expect to clean every plate, but I did. The most brilliant dish of them all is the bone marrow. Do not come here without experiencing this item. The only thing that could make this dish better is making the chew kway really crispy, but not necessary. Street Monkeys is to Cambodian food, like chicken balls, chop suey and egg rolls is to Chinese food. If you keep this in mind when you show up, you'll be a lot less disappointed. The food is Cambodian ex-pat food: salty, overly sauced, sweet, deep fried and meant to sell drinks. It's more of a bar than a restaurant. If you're there for that kind of vibe to drink and have snacks, great. It was perfect as that kind of place. Service was okay. Food came out in spurts as it was ready, and that's fine, but then we forgot what we ordered as well. It gets a second star because the food itself, had it not been so salty and sauced for Western tastes (?) has glimmers of deliciousness. It was well cooked but the taste of the food itself was completely overwhelmed with salt, sugar and sauce. Rice: From yesterday. You can't call yourself an Asian restaurant and then serve old rice from the day before. At least sprinkle water on it and reheat it to make it better. Or tell us the rice isn't ready yet and we should wait. At least give us the option. They did however, kindly comp it. Chicken skewers: Excellent. Without that sauce, better. Should have given it as a dip. Stuffed chicken wings: Meh. It's more sausage than wing. Arctic char: Best of the bunch. Bone Marrow: OK. The broth was the only thing I liked, the spices in there, the subtle flavours not hammered by too much salt - I needed a bowl! Squid: Saltiest I have ever eaten but closest to a real Cambodian dish. Less salt, and it would have been great. Portions are small, so be forewarned when you see the prices. Awesome awesome spot! I rarely review anything at all, but this spot was so great that I had to write something.  Just know four Philly guys walked into this spot not thinking much of it, but we each walked out with a phenomenal experience thanks to Hillary (with her food selections for us) and Francis (with them awesome cocktails). There was also another awesome dude at the bar area that we chatted up with too, but I forgot his name (sorry dude, just know Angelo's has the best cheesesteak and I recommend Pizzeria Beddia). Overall, everyone here was truly awesome, which made our time at the restaurant that much better. But let's break it down... Ambience: This place very much reminds me of a lot of restaurants in NYC. As soon as I walked in, it took me straight back to my times in NYC, which I loved. It's well lit, but not overly bright. The lighting definitely created a really chill vibe, with the tables all nicely spread apart. I love the bar setup--there's a front and rear bar (right in front of the kitchen). Service: Amazing service! We came in and were greeted immediately. Was told that there was a wait (best to make a reservation) and was offered to receive a text when we were up next. This is a nice feature that would've allowed us to leave and explore the area. The kitchen was busy, but our food came out in a timely manner. In addition, each time our dish came out, the waiter or hostess described what it was and how to eat it. Drinks: First, you know this is a legit Cambodian spot when you see some type of cocktail with Henny and TWO Heineken on taps (iykyk). I had the Long Beach, and my friends had the Yuzu Snooze Yuzu Lose. Both tasted great, but the Yuzu one had a taste that reminded me of home. Not sure what it was, but I ended up switching to the Yuzu. I will be back to try the other cocktails and hopefully any off-menu ones. Food: If it's your first time to the restaurant and you don't mind splurging a little, just ask the hostess to put in the order for you. That's what we did, and "no ragrets". So thank you Hillary and the kitchen! Food was so good that my ass had to look through their menu to name the dishes we had. -WASABI SHRIMP CEVICHE: Has a really heavy but nice hit of wasabi taste. Even with the strong taste of wasabi, you can still taste the sweetness of the shrimp. Combine the garnish on top with the shrimp; this dish was executed very well. Would order again. -STUFFED CHICKEN WINGS: Another really good dish that we would order again! I don't exactly remember the taste of this dish, but don't let the little to no details in this review make it seem like we didn't enjoy it. We would order this again.  -PRAHOK KTISS: Two words, "FLAVOR BOMB"! I'm not sure how to describe this dish besides using those two words. It's on the salty side due to the paste, but it's damn good. It goes very well with the raw veggies, but the intense flavor from the shrimp paste and Prahok can make it a little overwhelming for some. However, we loved it and would order it again. This dish with white rice would be killer! -PHNOM PENH STYLE BONE MARROW: So damn good that my friends and I talked about it the next day. If we hadn't had a flight to catch today, we would've come back for more. The marrow is eaten with Chinese fried dough (surprisingly, it wasn't oily at all) and is extremely flavorful. Something about the hoisin sauce and whatever else was on it made it taste even better. Best bone marrow I've ever had. The side of soup was a nice addition to level out the extreme richness of the marrow. If you're into bone marrow (even if you're not), I highly highly recommend. Would order again! -LAMB CHOPS: not your typical lamb chop. This reminded me of Vietnamese Porkchop com tam. It tasted great! Whatever marinade they used, good fucking job! I did not taste much of the gamey flavor of lambchop at all. My one friend, who isn't a big fan of lambchop due to its gameiness, said he didn't taste it at all. We all really liked this dish too. Would recommend.  -FISH WITH AMOK SAUCE: This dish was good but did not stand out like the rest of the dishes we had. The fish is really light, especially the batter, and the sauce is not overpowering. It just felt like something was missing. If this dish came after the Wasabi Shrimp Ceviche and before all of the other dishes above, then I don't think I would make such a comment. It's just that the other dishes we had before this were so flavorful that I was probably expecting the same. -CHHAA LOC LAC: Just like Vietnamese Bo Loc Lac, this dish definitely reminded me of home. But at this point, the group was pretty stuffed, but we thought it was really good too. Another would order dish for us.  Overall: I highly recommend this spot if anyone wants elevated Cambodian food or food that reminds you of SE Asia. A group of friends went to this place because it was one of the only restaurants open on a Monday, while the whole street was basically closed. Les street monkeys is like a Thai + tapas type of place where you share small dishes with other people. The problem is that we were still in the middle of the pandemic, so sharing food is a no-no for me. Therefore I took a full entree, which was a pad Thai (special of the week). On receiving the food, I was quite disappointed because it took a very long time and the portion size was significantly smaller than my friend's, who ordered the same thing. My friend and I decided to have a dinner to celebrate our birthdays and she suggest street monkeys. We were a group of five and had a reservation for a Friday night although the restaurant was busy it wasn't so loud that you had to yell to hear each other. The menu is quite big and we decided to order several dishes and share. To start I had gotten 2 drinks one was a version of a pina colada made with pandan. The other drink was a tamarind flavoured drink. Both were tasty and added to the atmosphere. For plates we had a variety including the beef salad, the stuffed chicken wings, wasabi shrimp,the eggplant, and beef noodles to name a few. Everything was tasty and I appreciated the flavours of the fish sauce which is home made along with the emphasis on mint and basil. My personal favorites were the thai sausages, the chicken skewers and the stuffed chicken wings. The beef skewers were a bit overcooked. The mee siam was too sweet. The fermented fish sauce on the beef steak was too fishy for me but one of my friends liked it. The portions are pretty small for the price. In order to be full, you will probably have to spend over 40$ per person with a drink. The service is great. We didn't wait too long for the food as they came one at a time. Our waitress was very nice and friendly. The place itself is nicely decorated and had a good vibe. Although the food was decent, I don't think I would come back. I can see it going from a place to have an intimate relaxed dinner to a bustling energetic bar depending on the clientele of the night. We were here on a Friday late night for dinner and found it mostly empty. There were several tables quietly enjoying their dinner and drinks, so we grabbed a table and did so also. The food are in tasting portions, meant to be shared at the table. Everyone gets maybe a bite-or-two and the dish will be gone. For example, the sausage stuffed chicken wings ($10) comes with only three wings and some pickled veggies on the side. But they are well seasoned, perfectly cooked and shows a lot of thought and preparation. The rest of the dishes are in the same vein. Small dishes, pricey for the portion, but well executed. I think we ordered around 7-8 dishes for 4 people and we were not hungry but definitely not feeling full by the end of the night. Extra star for making a great unique cocktail that packs a punch! There is so many things to try: Trout pan-fried in clarified butter, shrimp ceviche, mee siam (a thin rice vermicelli dish) in a spiced soybean and crabmeat sauce, grilled eggplant and papaya salads, and 'mom's imperial rolls' -- a mix of ground pork, onion, taro, salt, sugar and Cambodian kampot pepper. It's a disappointment when stars come off when Restaurants can't accommodate clients during "busy hours". We came here around 6:30 pm, group of 5. Our waiter was great but the "your drinks are coming" got old quickly. I had to cancel my second drink because there was only one bartender for a full house. On top of that, we had to order from another server because we couldn't flag down the waiter.Although, service was made up by offering a dessert on the house (I am glad they did). This spot has been in my radar for a while seeing that I always enjoy tapas style restaurants that offer you the chance to sample many dishes. I organized a Meetup dinner for a group of 12 where we'd get a fixed menu at a fixed price and chef's choice on the items. From the moment I called in for the reservation, the staff was exceptionally accommodating and polite, ensuring me this would be a great experience, and it indeed it was! We were served an abundance of food, 11 total, to share amongst our group and not one dish wasn't a complete pleasure! We sampled the ceviche, eggplant salad, papaya salad, imperial rolls, marinated beef, chicken skewers, mushroom dip, Thai sausage, curried fish, fried vermicelli, and lamb chop; everything was plain outstanding! All the dishes were well prepared and nicely seasoned; heavy on lemongrass, fish sauce, chilli and basil, representative of Cambodian street food as our waitress who happened to be Cambodian assured us, the dishes were just plain delicious! I also got to taste some of their cocktails, including the Pimm's Juice and Tota Margarita. The Pimm's cocktail was light and palatable. The margarita, with crushed grasshopper and red worm, was interesting but I found it too smoky for my taste. The service, from start to finish, was great; our dishes, served over three servings, came out of the kitchen at the same time and the staff took time to explain our dishes, much to the delight of the group. The venue, with its graffiti wall, light wood tables and black chairs, including the long bar with ample seating and open kitchen, was slick, modern with an industrial vibe. Although we've heard the venue can get loud, we were all able to carry a conversation even though seated under a speaker, and the place was full on a Friday night. It's an open concept so you can watch your food being cooked at the bar. The food was absolutely delicious!! Very few restaurants know how to season a fish well and here it was amazing!! I had the fish over salsa. I also ordered the fried papaya salad which was just as good! Honestly we were all salivating. I asked for spicy and my mouth was on fire! I also ordered their ginger mocktail, really good! However I wouldn't order it with a spicy meal lol As for dessert I had sesame doughnut which I didn't like as much. My friends had a banana dessert which I preferred. I found the music too loud which made it hard to converse with the people around the table. The restaurant was packed and it seemed like there was only 1 waitress taking the orders. I have some food allergies which I informed them of.
