Hence when a friend suggested we get pedicures a wave of fear washed over me. Pedicures? I've successfully avoided one for so long why would I start having them now? People touching our feet? And everyone being able to see us? Luckily said friend wasn't suggest mall pedicures, she was taking it up a level and suggested Pho Thai Spa which is conveniently located on Brunswick Street (past the New Farm Cinema and next to Death Before Decaf). Yes, you'll pay a little more but can opt for a quick 30 minute pedi or the hour long (like we did) which includes a neck and head massage, and for the added luxuries - it's worth it. When you arrive you enter a serene space where mobile phone use is discouraged and you remove your shoes before being taken through to the treatment room. You'll be served a cup of warm tea. There's 6 cane lounges meaning there's no mass pedicure turn style happening here. The setting is more day spa than harshly lit salon. You're shown to your lounge and invited to soak your feet before a scrub is applied and wiped off. Then, with your eye mask on, you're transported to a moment of relaxation as the therapists combine gentle massage, pressure point massage and an actual pedicure. While your nails are drying (if you've opted for a nail varnish), your neck and head are gently massaged. Thankfully, we weren't rushed to leave our lounges post-treatment and were given ample time to warm back up to the idea of re-entering the real world. They also do Thai massage and facials so you could easily spend a day-spa day here and leave the worries of the world at the door! And, for the first time in my life, I get the benefits of a pedicure. Says I as I admire how shiny and smooth my feet look.

A friend recommended me to Pho Thai Spa on Brunswick Street in New Farm. I immediately booked myself in for the 45 minute pedicure package. Upon entering Pho Thai Spa, the first thing I noticed was the beautiful Thai decor. Long lounge chairs, dim lighting and green tea being brewed for my arrival. I knew immediately I was going to like it here. The lady who took care of me got me settled and soaked my feet in warm coconut water. Before preparing my feet for the pedicure side of things, she gave me the most amazing foot massage I have ever had, to the point where I had to concentrate to stay awake. It was exactly what the doctor ordered! After the massage she brought out a selection of OPI nail polish to choose from for my toenail colour. I was a bit sad once it was all over, but it felt like I was there for much longer than 45 minutes. My deluxe pedicure came to $65, and was worth every scent. It was such a fantastic pampering session and I'd happily recommend it to all of my friends. Another great thing is that as a new customer I was given a $20 voucher to use for my next visit...as if I needed more excuses ti come back! Plus I discovered that they do packages where a group of friends can book the spa for a few hours for $105 a person and receive massages and facials whilst drinking champagne. This is exactly what happened this weekend and I have no regrets. For $25 I happily settled on a 20min neck and shoulder massage. It isn't a day spa so don't expect a lot of frills and the staff are still friendly (or so I found). I was led to the massage table and lay down before a few cloths were placed over me. There's no oils (unless you've selected that option) or unrobing so it's a quick starting point. My masseuse started working on the knots in my shoulder and all my tension started melting. It wasn't long before I was a relaxed heap on the massage table. She was very understanding and responsive when I mentioned the pressure on my neck at one point was too hard. Yes, you are in a shopping centre and there is the sounds of people passing by. To be honest, though, it all kind of blurs into white noise and with a little focus it's not a detractor from the massage. 24 hours on and my neck and shoulders feel looser than they have in a long time, and at $25 a pop it's something I can easily consider on a weekly basis! They don't currently have private health rebates on the spot but we were told that they will in a month or so.

This is really a no-frills service. If you're doing a foot massage, the masseuse wipes off the massage cream with kitchen paper towels. The water used for soaking feet is plain, no herbs or scent added. The cream used is also no frills. No fancy towels or beds. Their beds are solid wood laid with checked sheets. BUT, having said all that, the techniques are top-notch. I've been to other massage places within the mall where I have to remember the name of a good masseuse if I come across because I get different results each time with different people.However at Happy Foot, no matter who I get, I'm guaranteed of absolute relaxation and relieved knots. The staff seem very diligent everytime I visit - they don't stare out and watch the shoppers pass by when massaging their clients, as other massage shops do. They focus on getting the right pressure and results. They may glance out now and then, but that's perfectly fine - don't we all get distracted at work? What I REALLY like is their face piece. As someone with a small head, I either get the oval impressions on my forehead with regular facepieces or just feel very very uncomfortable when the edges of the facepiece presses against different parts of my face. At Happy Foot, they use a spongy, faux leather bound face piece support so that your face doesn't just hang down against the face piece. Besides supporting my face, it also has a 'cheek piece' so that the weight of my face is evenly distributed. Love it! I've gone there a few times now and have enjoyed every session.

Followed by a "double pick me up", a 45 mins massage followed by a 45 mins facial. All in $250 per person for a 2 hour experience. There are a couple of product lines in use and your therapist will pick the one suitable for your skin. Highly recommended, this is super close to Brisbane but makes you feel like you are in Ubud!

I had a 90 minute massage that combined both Thai stretching and relaxing oil massage by Mariann (a Thai woman who had been massaging for 2 years.) The tension is gone in my back & I can turn my head without any discomfort. The rooms are located in an office building, which is a little odd. I had my massage on the weekend, which meant the buildings air conditioning was not on. This did make the room warm, though there was a good portable air conditioner to keep the air moving. I preferred that it was warm as I think being in air conditioning would could make me feel cold when parts of my body were uncovered. The massage table was very wide, which meant there was no risk of falling off during stretching. It was lightly padded but I found it very comfortable. The pedicure was great too. They buff, file, massage, the whole bit and I got purple toes, just because I was feeling like purple at the time. I came out feeling perfectly relaxed. Candles, essential oils, calming music - everything is just perfect. I will definitely be going back or at the very least, ask for Pure Indulgence gift vouchers from everyone form now on.
