I started learning how to drive from Mr. Leung this past summer from scratch. As someone who's never driven before and rarely am in cars or even have access to a car to practice outside of lessons, I can proudly say I passed my driving test! This would not have been possible without lessons from Mr. Leung and even the occasional lessons with Tom. However my preference is still lessons with Mr. Leung. Mr. Leung was always very patient and taught not only the technical parts of how to drive but also how to be a good driver by increasing observation and judgement. He is also very observant of each student's individual technique, strengths and weaknesses in driving and tries his best to target on getting rid of the student's bad driving habits. He also makes you very comfortable while driving by cracking jokes and pointing out entertaining things he sees out in the streets. This place was also very affordable and had multiple packages to choose from. Mr. Leung also speaks English which helps for those that do not know Chinese. I understand. Taking the driving test is difficult. Hell, this woman had to take it 960 times to get it right. (http://www.nytimes.com/2010/09/04/world/asia/04driver.html?pagewanted=all) For me, third time's the charm. But before I rave how great this place is, I would like to thank my family (because family comes first), teachers (because without them, we will not be who we are today), and friends (because life will be trivial without people to play with). And at Leung's Driving School, I was taught by Mr. Tam (shoutout for Mr. Tam!!!). He was extremely helpful in trying to figure out what the hell was wrong with me!!! Why couldn't I parallel park correctly? And most importantly, stop being such a wimp behind the wheel! My last instructor, which I'm going to bash...I mean write about later, taught me the wrong way of taking control of the wheel. When you the turn the wheel, it should be a full or half a turn depending how narrow or wide of a space you have. I shouldn't be driving like a robot. Robot turn left...left...left...a little bit more left. Best of all, Mr. Tam keeps a motorcycle toy in his car to demonstrate how my car looks like when I make turns and parks. Yes, he has his own props. That and a broken radio antenna. Moreover, if you are a math wiz (applause...applause...no, no, you are too kind), Mr. Tam explains to you in mathematical terms as to how your parking should be like. Yes, parking is about math. When you park, the butt of the car and the curb should form two equal right triangles. If they are obtuse or acute triangles, then you need to fix it. Congruent triangles are your best triangles. Close to curb, turn left. Far, turn right. Close -- L; Far -- R. Simple equations. Simple math. And of course, practice...practice...practice. I seriously recommend those learning for the first time to take at least 16 lessons (the receptionist Ms. Ling will recommend more) as a newbie. They have a package and each additional lesson costs $26. They are a bit more expensive than other Chinese driving schools, but in my own opinion (b/c I don't want to get sued), you should use your best judgment to decide how many lessons you should take because you don't want to take this exam for the 960th time. This place makes you take two lessons in a session. So 16 lessons will only be 8 classes. If you are a shaky wimp (we all are), take more. If you are a confident pompous arse (some are), take just the package and avoid killing yourself. Think about this investment. Besides getting a license, you learn how to drive safer. More lessons = Safer driver. Of course, this logic may not be true to all (and I'm sure you know what kind of driver you are...reckless...poor anger management, clueless, drunk, etc.), but by being a safer driver, you save on insurance, tort claims, tickets, and accidents. Lastly, if you don't think you have a great connection with the instructor, change instructors or schools. Don't be scared! During the exam, a colleague (from the same school) made a ridiculous and pathetic mistake. He tried to commit suicide by driving back into the same lane as he made his broken u-turn. Perhaps, he was scared (we all were). Maybe he needs more lessons (obviously) or another guide. Heck, I changed two driving schools. So make sure you find the right place and person to teach you what you need to know. And if something feels wrong, you have to say no. I'm sure we were all taught not to take candies from a stranger, and if someone or something is feeling you up, you say no! and then you whip out your iPhone or Android to take pics of the pervert...contact the police, and post his pics all over youtube, yelp, facebook, etc. At the test site, one driving school drove its car behind us. I don't remember what school. But at 90 something degrees, there was smoke coming out from the hood. Yet, the instructor told the kids to test drive in that car. I know most of us (young, old, or Asian) may not like confrontations, but sometimes, you just have to stand up for yourself and say no! Like Murphy's Law, "Anything that can go wrong, will go wrong". And yep, those kids failed alright. I'm giving this place a 4 instead of 5 because at 90 something degrees, a little A/C in the car while waiting to take the exam would be nice. There were 4 of us. I had a very good experience with Leung's Driving School a while back, and have to give a lot of credit to Albert for helping me pass my road test on my first attempt. He's very attentive to detail and patient, and also reinforces areas of learning that need the most development. And although driving may not be nuclear physics, it can sometimes be unnerving to drive around in New York City, and he's definitely very good about teaching good street sense. In addition, with respect to language skills, the folks at Leung's Driving School obviously speak Chinese but they can also speak English as well. There are other schools in Chinatown where the instructors only speak Chinese, and that's fine if you're fluent in Chinese...but there is a pretty even mix between Chinese and non-Chinese students that take lessons here so that should tell you something. I initially learned how to drive with another company a while back, but Leung's Driving School is heads and shoulders above the other driving school. Importantly, hour-and-a-half driving sessions are only around $40 each, and I find it hard to believe that you'll get anywhere near as good a value in Manhattan. They also give you the time that you deserve, as opposed to other places that might shortchange you on time just because they can. The only potential consideration is that the instructor doesn't pick you up at your house -- you have to meet them at their place on Mott Street -- but the walking distance is just a few minutes from any Canal Street station. I took 20 hours' worth of lessons at Leung's, which is probably the minimum that I would recommend unless driving comes very intuitively to you. Keep in mind that the DMV recommends at least 30 hours of road time. Anyway, I'm obviously thrilled to have passed my road test, but I'm equally happy to recommend Leung's Driving School to everyone. The yelp reviews directed me to this school, displaying the power of user generated content because i highly doubt this school promotes itself via social media/technology. At the end of the day, I became a better driver, passed my test on my 1st time, and felt the lessons were value for money. Hence 5 stars. On price, I paid around $630 for 22 classes. Each class is 45 minutes. Per class rates average $29 if you sign up for more classes. You have to pay upfront in cash too. I'd recommend piecing 4-6 classes at one time, because the lessons are more efficient, and you can drive around a larger area of lower Manhattan, which makes it more fun. On instructions / instructor, the quality of teaching is there - the teacher (Tam) taught me how to properly parallel park consistently. However, the 1st day / initial classes was rough. Looking back, i'm thankful for the tough love. Also, note that sometimes, instructions are tough to understand and i would always ask him to repeat. This is an AMAZING driving school! The instructor will give you honest feedback and make sure that you practice what you need to be working on in order to pass the driving test. Not only that, Mr. Leung continues to teach you right up until the test! As we were driving to the testing location in queens, he drove us pass the streets that are test was likely to be on and demonstrated what we needed to do on those exact streets. I really don't how this place gets so many 5 star reviews. Firstly let me say that I was not disappointed. I passed the first go around. But there are pros and cons to this place. Pros: is the price, they are pretty cheap and I think its worth the money if you are willing to put in the time. I asked specifically for Mr. Leung. He was a quirky man and speaks English and Chinese (but I think you'd be better off if you spoke a little Chinese). He isn't exactly personable but gets the job done and seems on top of things. The only thing I had trouble understanding was parallel parking principles but he did try. Negatives: The cars and space itself is grimey. You have to wait for an appointment. Be patient, they use a really old system where they track everything by paper so it seems like they only like to make appointments one week out which can be annoying if you have a busy schedule. You also have to watch this 4 hour video which takes place in a grimey room in China town and the video looks like you're watching something from the 70s All said, I passed. If you want to really learn how to drive, you're learning some times in real traffic situations (China town is no joke). If you put in the time he gets the job done, but don't go there looking for efficient service. Go looking for value and be ok with a bit of scheduling annoyance. read more

I took the 10 lesson package (as others have mentioned, lessons are taking two at a time so, in practice, this was five sessions of ninety minutes each). Albert was a good teacher and helped me build confidence while reinforcing technical skills (manoeuvres, parking etc). He was extremely good at giving me an idea of what to expect during the road test. I passed first time and I attribute it almost all to his tuition. The women on reception are friendly and helpful. Lack of English isn't usually a problem, though I found it best to communicate face to face rather than over the phone. Not being able to book multiple lessons further in advance was a bit of a pain but I suppose it helps them maintain a little flexibility in their schedule - I managed to complete my five sessions in about one and a half months. I've nothing else to compare it to in NYC, but I found Leung's to be great value and would highly recommend it to anybody. read more

Just came back with tears of joy in my eyes from passing my road test. After my first failed attempt, I took two more lessons with Mr. Leung (one of which I scheduled a day before the road test) and he drilled me over and over on my weak points. As always, he was patient and funny and gave me the confidence that I needed. Even though I think those women who work at the DMV that administer the tests are the most miserable creatures to walk this earth, she reluctantly passed me because she knew my skills were just fine. When I got out of the car, I had tears in my eyes and ran and hugged Mr. Leung and thanked him. With regard to the test site, if you can manage it, try to get Astoria vs. Red Hook. In Astoria the streets are marked a lot clearer than Red Hook and you don't have to worry about giant trucks coming out of the factories. There's a stop sign on almost every corner in Astoria and there might be a slight blind spot on a couple of streets but compared to Red Hook you don't feel as pressured and confused. I'm from Harlem and waited 30 years to get my license but the Lord blessed me with this place. I work on Fulton street so I needed a school that would be close to my job so i can walk right to work soon as I finished class. The ladies at the desk, the receptionist are top of the line beautiful woman who made the sun shine even on a cloudy day. But much respect goes out to Albert the instructor from day one he was my brother, a great personality and a tremendous spirit. I felt at easy at all times while being instructed by Albert. I passed my test on the first shot and so I thank Leungs Driving school and I hope them much success in the future. read more

Here is why 2 stars (why not less or more). The reason why I did not give less than 2 stars is because I did pass my driving test the first time after taking 20 lessons from this place. But honestly, I would recommend going to a different school that is cheaper and offer better service. Pros: - Receptionist is nice (of course they have to as they are collecting your money, but I'm glad they are always smiling). - I had Albert as my instructor for my last lesson since he was subbing Tam. He gave me really good tips about the stop signs and creeping inch by inch (looking both ways), I believe that really helped me with my test and one of the major reasons I passed. - Although I'm not a fan of Tam as my instructor, I did pass the test, and parked/and did a k-turn smoothly because of lessons with him. Cons: -(Major reason I was disappointed about this school.) The scheduling is horrible. If I knew that they would schedule my lessons once every other week, I would have definitely went to a different school. I don't have a car at home nor any friends that I practice driving with, so this really affected my learning progress. After two weeks I already forgotten what I learned without practicing. But I have already gave them a huge amt of deposit for the Unlimited Package ($799 for unlimited road test + 18 lessons + five hour video). In addition, when I mentioned this to the receptionist, they just told me that they can't schedule me ahead of time (which is really confusing to me, because I already paid for the lessons ahead of time, so I don't really understand why I need to be pushed out every other two weeks for half of my lessons). - I tried to reschedule my driving test but the receptionist gave me a bad attitude about it, and I was SUPER SHOCKED since she was usually really really nice to me. I'm not sure if it was a bad day for her, but it was definitely not necessary for me to receive that negative tone from her. -I had Tam. NOW PLEASE WHEN YOU ARE SCHEDULING YOUR FIRST APPOINTMENT, AVOID HAVING HIM. He was my instructor for 18 lessons, however I have to say 9/18 I really did not understand him so I felt like my learning progress could have been much faster and probably did not have to spend more money to add on extra lessons! I should have asked to switch instructor, but a part of me kept saying "maybe next time I will understand him" (that was stupidity on my end, so please do not repeat my mistake). In addition, it really does not help when he yells at you. I also added 2 extra lessons from a different driving school right before my driving test to get more practice. Overall, if you can find a place that is cheaper and can schedule your lessons week after week, it would be best. I have taken lessons at this driving school with Mr. Leung when I was 16 y/o. I remember taking at least 15-20 lessons and still couldn't pass the road test after many attempts (3 tries). The way the lessons were taught was just not well in my view. I did not come away with much knowledge. some years pass and then I went to a different driving school in Brooklyn with my friend's uncle's driving school (Ho Ho won driving school in sunset park). The same thing happened. Took about 10-15 lessons and attempted the road test again for two more tries with no luck. On my final road test, I had a very nice proctor. She gave me many chances but I still couldn't pass because my turns were too short or too wide. Years pass and I finally learn the cause of my poor perception; it was due to my height in relation to the dashboard. I finally did my own research and brought my own extensions and booster seat to correct this problem. What I don't understand from these two driving school is why they never mention anything to me or corrected me. Literally my arms and chest were hugging the steering wheel, that's how close my seat was for me to reach the gas and stop pedals. How is that acceptable? I don't get it. I have realized a lot of driving schools are all about money money money. They could care less if you pass or fail as long as you keep coming back for more lessons. It's horrible. read more

My friend and boyfriend had taken lessons at Mr. Leung's Driving School and both had passed. I was convinced to take my lessons here and it definitely didn't disappoint. I chose the package with 18 lessons and unlimited times of testing within a year, the price came out to be around $700ish, pricey but the outcome was worth it. My lessons are usually on Saturdays which is Mr. Leung's day off, so instead I got Mr. Tam. It was hard to understand Mr. Tam at first but with the next meeting, I know what to expect from him and he spoke clearer since I manage to tell him the first time around that he wasn't clear in communication. I find myself getting better at driving with each meeting which made me more confident. The lady at the receptionist (which goes by Ling) was really nice and accommodating. She helps me schedule my time each week after my lessons (because I'm the first one each one, I go schedule my next appointment after my lessons versus before my lesson). She quickly scheduled my test date and told me my test site even though I still have a couple of more lessons to go. She manages to arrange everything perfectly so I fully complete my lessons and was able to take the road test. On the day of my test, I had my last lesson with Mr. Leung. He was definitely an interesting person. Also likes to talk a lot, so if you don't like distractions (which I find myself don't) take Mr. Tam instead. Mr. Leung actually made me nervous before my test because I literally thought I got everything down but he kept criticizing the way I drive. I thought I was going to go nuts. He then took myself and another 3 person to the test site and along the way, gave us a lot of pointers which was really helpful. In the end, I passed on my first road test. Each person has their own preference of how they want their instructor to be, so don't hesitate to change instructors at the driving school. Plus, to each their own. read more

Mr. Leung helped me pass my driving test on my first attempt. This was quite a few years ago. However, my wife wants to learn driving and I am thinking of recommending him to her. One thing I need to mention to y'all. Be sure you take your lessons with Mr. Leung himself. My first 3 lessons of 7 were wasted on another instructor. I thought the guy was Mr. Leung cuz when I called him Mr. Leung, he acknowledged through silence. This guy was so terrible as an instructor and was opposite of the positive reviews I had seen online before I signed up with them! It took me 3 sessions to realize he was not Mr. L! He could not speak any language that I can understand properly. He had heavy accent in Canto and he doesn't really know Eng or Mandarin. He is also very impatient and mean. He gets angry when people learning to drive cannot drive properly. Imagine that! Thereafter I specifically told the receptionist I only want my lessons with Mr. Leung. So basically I had only 4 sessions of proper training and I was able to pass the road test anyway. Mr. L is nice and makes learning a lot easier. Yes, I got screwed out of the first 3 sessions, but I didn't make a fuss of it. I just want other people to know they need to make sure they get the right instructor. EDIT: I decided to lower my rating from 4 to 3 after reading in another review that Mr. Tom is still there. He is the guy who I mention is terrible. I can't believe they still have him. After going to another driving school, I realized that this isn't the place for me to learn to drive AND pass the driving test. They do not instill a sense of confidence in you (it isn't their way), but a sense of "not good enough" so when test day rolled around - I skipped out twice because I was scared. They were expensive and a waste of my money.. They aren't very accommodating. A year later, I decided to go elsewhere that had a cheaper price tag and discovered that this new place was great too. The instructor built up my confidence and told me exactly what each proctor expects. I think it was 223 Canal street on the 2nd floor.. I've had 4 other driving teachers, and he is by far the best. He's just a fantastic man. I will miss seeing him when I finally pass the driving test. Other teachers were imprecise and didn't criticize and correct basic problems with my driving. My first lesson at Leung's was 90 minutes of just left and right turns. The receptionist was really nice and if you get Mr. Leung you will love it, he is a really funny guy and make jokes when you make a mistake. However, trying to schedule a lesson, or any lesson with this school is super difficult! It was one lesson every other week if you are lucky. I ended up only having 2 lessons with Mr. Leung and all the other ones were with Mr. Tam. Mr. Tam was so horrible! When I was driving he would reach over and honk the car at another car or one time he leaned over to curse at a pedestrian. When I made a mistake he also yelled at me like a small child (not that you should yell at a small child like the way he did). He really doesn't have patience to teach. It is not worth it to pay for this place if you don't get Mr. Leung (which is next to impossible). Also, warning, they only accept cash payments. read more

I learned about this driving school after looking on Yelp and found favorable reviews. I took their 10 sessions package and passed my road test. I'll say that Leung's driving school is doing a reasonable job and the price is low compared to others. I practiced with Mr. Leung himself. He's good but he is always looking at his little record keeping book while teaching. I was annoyed at first but I let that go because he seemed alert of what was going on. I have to give him credit for being patient and would make you practice your weakest area over and over. One thing I like about Mr Leung is that he talks a lot but it is about driving that he talks about. So if you just acknowledge him and let him talk, you'll learn from it. He's also good at explaining what you will encounter at the road test site when he drives you there. He would constantly remind you things and make you feel less nervous when he drives you to test. Albert is a really good instructor! He uses little toys and tricks to explain parking, 3 point turns and so on. I was getting back to driving after 15 years of not driving. I passed my road test on the 4th attempt. I would say that had to do my getting nervous and the DMV inspectors not clearing explaining where I was wrong. I would recommend more than 10 lessons if you're getting back to driving after a long break. Alice at the front desk is very helpful too. Language wasn't really a barrier. They're very strict about their cancellation policies. If you need to cancel or reschedule make sure it's at least 24 hours in advance. This is a cash only place. I tried to learn how drive for many years with my family/friends volunteering to teach me, but it was always a really stressful and nerve-wracking experience. I failed the driving test several times. My friend recommended I study with Mr. Leung instead, and after only 1.5 months...I now have my license and am a really skilled/confident driver! I'm honestly in shock about how quickly this happened. Driving in Chinatown was intimidating, but Mr. Leung always made me feel safe, and that if I could drive there I was prepared for anything! If someone's trying to save some money, I'd recommend this place as I think it's fairly cheaper than other schools but booking a lesson or road test is sooooooooooooo hard and the office/school smells like cigarette everywhere. When I had to watch that 4 hour video, I wanted to puke. I had gone a great many years without driving and wanted to get my license, driving on the right hand side of the road for really the first time. Albert Leung was my instructor and I had a very positive experience. He is extremely exacting and a very very experienced driver, able to give guidance during the lesson which will help you learn his skills. He will make you conscientious about everything. Pedestrians in particular; likely outcomes when a driver is slowing down; executing perfect parallel parking and 3-point turns. Even making a turn in an intersection becomes an artform under Albert's eagle-eyed tutelage. He has a sort of road sixth sense that he can start to impart to you. Albert teaches nuances like observing the red light countdown and using that to help judge whether to attempt a turn or go through an intersection. How many times did I hear him intone "You just failed the test" - it made me want to improve, and I steadily did. I ended up passing the test with just ten points off while many people around me were either failing or scraping by with many points deducted. The road test in Queens is no joke, those inspectors are demanding as well they should be. And I finally got a little smile from my long suffering teacher :-) Later I took the highway course and he was invaluable in helping me negotiate stressful situations like merging in traffic with impatient drivers all around and the lane running out. The bottom line is: Albert will turn you into a very safe, very observant driver. read more

This is a dingy spot in Chinatown that probably gets most of their customers through word of mouth. I happened to find this spot upon reviews from fellow yelpers. It's literally a small little space on the second floor of a shady building (if you aren't used to chinatown, you'd be afraid!) I got the 18 lessons with unlimited test taking package for about $800. Each lesson is an hour and a half (45 minutes per, so technically, it was 9 lessons). The lady in the front, Alice, was very friendly all throughout. My only peeve was the constant smell of cigarette smoke that dominated the room (due to her chain smoking in the back. In her defense, she did try to spray some air freshener, but given that the area of the room is small, it was pretty useless. Ugh, I wish they had an air vent.) This didn't serve as much of a problem if I'm in and out of the place, but when I had to sit there for 3 hours watching the safety video... it was hell on hell... because the videos were SUPER pixelated and played via VCR (You think your video on youtube that is refusing to buffer is bad? Think worse.) On the driving lessons itself. My instructor was Mr. Tam. He was helpful, but he wasn't very clear. He has little toys and a long antennae that he would pull out from the side to demonstrate things, but he never really made sure if I understood, just repeated himself many times. (In HIS defense, it's probably my own stupidity... during one of my last lessons, I still failed to grasp the concept of parallel parking, and he told me that perhaps I really had no talent in driving. LOL!) Nevertheless, he did what he could on me. The only complaint that I have is that during almost every lesson, he would make me drive him to a public bathroom and spend my lesson time there. He also almost always ended my lesson a couple minutes early. Those minutes add up! Due to the 'unlimited road test' part of my package plan, they obviously want to make the most profit possible, so they signed me up for the easiest road location (at Astoria). I think Mr. Leung drove 4 of us to the location that day. He was very funny and helpful, comforting us and giving us tips during the trip. I am born and raised New Yorker who has already graduated College and Grad School. I have been ragged on all throughout my post- 18 year old life for not having a drivers license. When I finally decided to get one, I looked on Yelp for the best school for a great price, and stumbled upon Leung's. I also wanted to be thrown into the China Town driving scene, which is somewhat a real world resemblance of hell. I know my way around China Town and have eaten and been to some hole in the wall places, but the building for Leungs is up there with eeriness. When I got over my heebeegeebees and I found the office, it was pleasant and welcoming. The front desk is extremely nice and accommodating. I signed up for the 18 lesson package, which is really 9 lessons. (I also signed up for one more lesson right before the test to make sure I was ready). This was my first time driving in a few years, and my first time driving for an extended period of time, so I was nervous. I became even more nervous when (on upon me telling this information to my instructor - Mr. Tam) he asked me to pull out of the space on Mott Street. I graciously declined, not even knowing how to distinguish the gas from the brake, to which he hopped in and drove to a more secluded spot. The driving classes were great, teaching me how to drive while being cautious of my surroundings. I will say that all of the lessons are tailored to the test, so I never went on the highway or any great distance away. But for NY this was a great program. I passed my test on the first try and have only Leung's to thank for that. I have and would highly recommend this program to ANYONE who wants to learn how to drive at ANY age. read more

Be warned : TAM is rude and aggressive. He was cursing at me with the " F " words and " MotherFuc*" the entire time. He was not in the mood and very upset. why are you here if you upset about what u do. No one needs you here. He told me how stupid and how dumb I am, even though I told him this is my first lesson. Then he said most people are better than you even though this is their first time. You are really terrible. If he is my dad, I probably would kill myself right away The amount of pressure and stress are not worth it Actually, this driving school is really expensive, other place in Chinatown charged $ 200 or less for the same deal. Most people come here thinking this is the best driving school and for the least price. You are wrong, in fact. In order to increase your chance to pass, u need to take a class every single day or every other days before the road test Clearly, u won't get more than one class per week in this school. U will forget everything after one week. Ugh My next instructor, Leung, I have to say he is very nice and nothing like the first instructor that I took from this school. He is the best. read more

Take lessons with Mr. Leung!! He is tough, but patient. He really forces you to understand driving techniques and points out things to look out for on the road. He's also such a great character and amusing. I'm a native New Yorker and have never driven before so this is the place to go to if you want to learn how to drive for the first time in the city. I passed on my first road test in Middle Village! Book your lessons as you need them, cash only. I took 20 45-min lessons (usually 2 lessons booked together so technically 10 lessons) and had a lesson the day of my road test. He gave me pointers on everything the inspectors are looking for. I also recommend (if possible) to practice driving in other boroughs outside of your lessons in a friend or relative's car. Over time, you will learn that you have your own technique of parallel parking. I followed a different method than this school and they gave me guidance on how to improve my parking method. Driving in Chinatown is not easy, but Mr. Leung will make you feel comfortable. I highly recommend this driving school for their value and alternative teaching instructions. Sure, the office building is grimy, but you're not paying for the quality of their office, but the quality of your driving lesson. (Also the receptionist is so nice and always gives me a reminder phone call of my next appointment!!) read more

Some of the skills I learned in his classes were critical in passing the road test and I went to another and a more expensive school. If I didn't take his classes I think I would have had a harder time getting out of the position I put myself into. I was in the market for a driving school a couple months ago, so naturally I turned to Yelp for help. Leung's driving school was at the top of the list, seems like people passed their tests and the school is affordable. Bingo, that settled my search. I went down to the office prepared with my cash because of Yelp reviews. It was $425 for a 10 class package, the five hour class, and the road test. I had only driven two times in my life - never in a city - and I thought I would just buy a couple more lessons after my package was done if I needed it. My first lesson, Mr. Leung expected me to drive the car out of its spot on Mott street. I had no idea what I was doing so I told him maybe he should get us out of this street. He obliged and drove us a few blocks away where it was less traffic. When I got back into the driver's seat, I asked Mr. Leung if any of his students had gotten into accidents and he said no. I was sure I was going to be the first. I had Mr. Leung for all 5 of my classes (10 45 minute lessons are coupled together to make 5 hour and a half lessons) and he really prepared me for the driving test. He is funny and tells you to look out for everything. I only had 5 lessons. There was about a month in between my second and third lesson because they were all booked up. That was kind of annoying. BUT I had my road test in Red Hook last Monday and I passed! On my first try! I am a licensed driver and it is all because of Mr. Leung. It was a great and painless experience. read more

Against all odds, I passed my road test today in Astoria! Honestly I went in without expecting to pass but turns out this place prepared me well and I made it with only 5 points taken off (for being too close to the curb during parallel parking that required a fix i.e. excessive maneuver). I bought the 10-lesson package in the beginning and supplemented one lesson today. Like others said they generally do 2 lessons at a time (45 x 2 = 90 minutes) but for some reason my very first time was scheduled for 3 lessons so I guess the schedule got thrown off. Actually there was a one year gap between my first lesson and my second lesson (work got crazy), and they were nice enough to allow me to supplement the increase in pricing ($25) instead of having me waste almost $300 of lesson time. From that point onward I knew that they ran a fair and efficient business and always trusted them. Another example is that today my instructor ran 30 min late, and as a result our lesson was 30 minutes past the scheduled time because they literally keep track of everything - I really appreciate this. Most of my lessons were with Mr. Tam (about 4), and my last lesson today before the road test was with Mr. Leung. The instructors are a bit different and I think I really liked having had both of them, as they pay attention to different things. I think Mr. Tam is more technically strict - hold the wheel straight, look out for specific angles, eyeing distances with parallel parking etc, while Mr. Leung points out traffic rules to you more i.e. don't go over bike lane, make sure you stop at stop signs and count to 3, observe thoroughly etc. Maybe it's because by the time I got to Mr. Leung today I was already driving ok? But anyway, I found having both helpful, and I think it was very helpful to have the last lesson with Mr. Leung today before the road test. Both instructors will yell at you and say a lot of things while you are trying to pay attention to the road which adds to the stress, but maybe that's just how you learn and remember things. Mr. Leung was also excellent in pointing out what to expect on the road test, which played a big role in my passing the test (I was very, very calm). Before the road test he also drove us around the area and pointed out the one-way and two-way streets - so helpful! The receptionist lady is very friendly and definitely keeps a thorough record. The only time when something was off was when there was another lady who subbed in for her one day and scheduled my road test on the day that I was out of town (which I consequently had to pay $15 for). I think they even keep track of what dialect of Chinese you speak because she always speaks Mandarin when talking to me but almost always she speaks in Canotonese to other people. She also calls you before all your lessons (unless it was just me since I did forget one of them...) Clientele is mostly Chinese people who speak Chinese, although I have seen other races and Chinese people who only speak English. Speaking Chinese would definitely help, but both instructors speak English (and I think Mr. Leung may be a tad better) so it should be fine without. All in all, I passed the road test so there's literally nothing to complain about, and I am satisfied with the experience I have had here. *Minus one star for minor things: sometimes I feel like the instructors lose patience and end up sounding condescending, and it kind of frazzles me even more and not an ideal way to learn; the bathroom in this building...just don't (no soap no paper towel no toilet paper - although the receptionist lady will give you toilet paper...); there was not a lot of visibility in terms of road test scheduling.
