A year ago, I casually entered a golf tournament with colleagues before quickly realizing I was going to severely embarrass myself. I had 3 months to break a lifetime of terrible habits. I was beyond awful, never kept score, only played for fun/frustration a couple times a year, etc. I found Lew on Yelp and, even though he was further from me than many other instructors, his reviews gave me a good feeling - I called and we started lessons immediately. I told him about my event coming up, my realistic goal of simply not embarrassing myself, but to treat me like a beginner who knew absolutely nothing - we began building a new swing from scratch. Lew didn't just teach me how to fix something, he taught me why it was happening and gave me a pedagogical understanding that has helped me to analyze and solve my own problems outside of our lessons. He is incredible at diagnosing problems, trying multiple methods to fix problems until one clicks for you, helping you think from a holistic perspective, and taking time to defuse things when you're mentally kicking your own ass. By the time my tournament came around, I sucked...but I sucked SO much less than I used to. And, most importantly, I didn't humiliate myself (and actually made the winning putt for my team on the 18th). The truth: it's not easy...it's frustrating as hell...there's no magic wand. Spent an hour with Lew last week. I've have been having an issue with hooking my iron shots. Lew has a knack for picking out the subtle yet critical flaws in your swing. He breaks it down for you with video so you know exactly what he's talking about. He does a really good job of communicating not just what he wants you to do, but why he wants you to do it. I'm about a 25 handicap senior golfer and bought a 5 half-hour lesson package. Lew basically rebuilt my iron swing. My swing is considerably better, however, 5 lessons are not enough. We never got to work on my driver, pitching, putting, and I really need more iron lessons. My guess is if you are a high handicapper or a beginner you probably realistically need 15-20 lessons. Also the half hour lessons seem rushed. You really have to just shut up and listen or you will waste your time. Also, seeing yourself on video is very helpful. Lew is great. Awesome personality and of course very knowledgeable and professional. I had two lessons with him last year and still try to hear his voice and remember his feedback and apply them - every time I'm out on the range or a course. This was the first time i have ever received lessons and as I was fairly new to the game. I'm glad I corrected any errors early on. I'll try not make this too long, but I've been "trying" to play golf for the last 12 years; have given up several times only to try again. I've taken golf lessons before but was really turned off by the instructor trying get me to do a 24 year old's swing when I was 38. However, if I'm going to get better I have to get proper training, so I decided to give lessons another shot, 8 years after my last lesson. After a lesson with Lew I can say I'm so happy I did. My first swing was about as ugly as it gets with the results pretty much matching up. After a few adjustments, explanations, visuals and exercises to help my body understand what it's supposed to do, my shots started to improve. I ended the lesson absolutely crushing a ball out into the practice field. Frankly, I was shocked at how right the swing felt and how well I hit the ball. I didn't think I had it in me, apparently it's there and I just needed the right person to bring it out. Looking forward to more lessons and improving my game.
