For the last several haircuts here, the stylists have been rushed and careless with the electric clippers, leaving me with red skin irritation. I have been seriously ill with my colon cancer for nearly a year and wanted to treat myself to a full balayage to integrate the grey along with a trendy bob haircut. I was new to Pittsburgh after having the same stylists in Texas for 25 years. I brought a picture of the desired grey/silver hair color along with the Bob style desired for myself. The stylist assured me that they could achieve that color but did not know the bob? I showed additional pictures and they found some more before cutting. The color and toner that was placed upon my very healthy grey hair turned it brassy orange and yellow colors throughout that was never present in my lifetime of hair! I then had to come back since they felt that it just needed foils along the front hairline rather than throughout the hair...that did not eradicate the orange and yellow throughout the hair. Needless to say, on the 3rd attempt, my hair was bleached and nothing like the picture? I cried all of the way home...the haircut had not been the desired bob, either. After struggling with my health for a year, I wanted to feel pretty again...I'm not a difficult person. I asked the owner if he or another could please get my hair corrected and looking like the picture...he refused stating that I couldn't be pleased...who wants orange/yellow brassy hair? All 3 stylists had agreed! He told me to try another salon after I paid them $260 for coloring/cut/tips that resulted in brassiness that they all agreed needed to be corrected...not to white/platinum as I can easily show in the picture given at the 1st and other times. They did try to correct mistakes but they were just compounded by the stylist. Also, the stylist needs to wash their hands from smelling like cigarettes which was present. A great experience was blunted from the owner's lack of accountability in trying to tell me that I'm hard to satisfy...I simply asked and exhibited a desired color and cut that the stylist did not know and clearly did not know how to color my grey hair. I certainly didn't expect any of this...just a new haircut, color, and start to end the year's cancer battle. Beyond Disappointing. ‍ read more

My experience was good, everyone was very friendly and efficient. I came in with a full head of bleached hair in good health asking for an all over bleach with silver toner. My stylist eased my nerves by saying she wanted to do a bleach bath since my hair has already been lifted to almost the right color, I just needed my ends to be lifted a little for the silver to come through. First we bleached my roots and my stylist Kim was SO fast and talented, I was very impressed. While I waited under the heat dryer with my bleached roots she consulted with her boss about how to proceed. (Keep in mind that Kim and I were upstairs on the second floor of the salon and her boss was downstairs, her boss was not examining my hair or the color or the state of it's health when she made this recommendation.) Kim comes back upstairs with a box of silver hair dye (Golwell, Elumen Play in Silver) which surprised me because I was eager for the bleach bath. I knew my ends needed to be lifted since it had been about 2 months from my last bleach and they were a tad yellow. I don't like telling a professional what to do, especially in an area that I'm a novice to such as bleaching, toning and dying. I've been researching a lot in the past few months since bleaching my hair but I don't want to tell a professional how to do her job so I stayed quiet and optimistic. My hair was quickly dried and the silver semi-permanent applied. After the appropriate amount of time my stylist washed the dye out. She asked if I had purple shampoo at home and I said yes, she casually mentioned that she was washing the dye out with purple shampoo. So now my freshly bleached roots are the color of purple shampoo and the rest of my 18" hair is a dull yellowish-gray. She put blueish-purplish-grayish hair dye onto my slightly yellow hair so now it is a murky yellow color and my roots are purple-gray. I feel so ugly with this hair and wish so much that she would've trusted her instincts and done a bleach bath, especially since I let her know I do regular Olaplex treatments on my hair in between bleaching and the health of my hair is very good. I'm hoping this will fade with a few washings and Olaplex It's not fun writing such critical reviews when I know the business is trying their best to please every customer. I wouldn't risk it. I just wanted to get a haircut before my graduation from the Pitt medical program and do something nice for myself. I expressed I have clinical headshots this week and just want a clean professional trim. I asked for: just a trim, no layers, lose as little length as possible, and highlights (as a treat for graduation). I also said I wear my hair curly, and want to *avoid* looking like the 80's. The stylist took all that and gave me: a huge 2"+ chop -I can't even pull it into a ponytail for work- and nothing but layers. In essence, a weird Karen/ Molly Ringwald cut. I stopped her multiple times during the cut and asked her to stop or not do layers, and she just said, " well, just a few". I left the salon in tears. I give one star because the owners called me back in, refunded my money, and had to fix the cut because the right was higher than the left and the back was longer than the front. They salvaged it, but I am devastated and my confidence is wrecked. read more

Had an appointment scheduled for December 23 the hair stylist canceled it seeing she couldn't make it to work cause of the snow. So they asked me to come in on the 24 Christmas Eve I made it happen get there at 10:30 for my appointment the girl had another client in her chair wasn't able to take me till 11:30 an hour after my scheduled appointment. I tell her I have to be somewhere for dinner at 3:30 she took her time talking to other workers left me in the chair for 20 mins before even starting my hair 3:30 comes around I'm still there she tells me to schedule another appointment on my next day off and she will fix my hair seeing she didn't finish it. I called to schedule the appointment and get told it's been more then 7 days so I now have to pay for it to be fixed even though it was her fault. I work 2 jobs and literally did as I was told to call when I knew my next day off and now they won't honor what I was told cause it was 20 days since my appointment. I can't help my work schedule and I was never informed it had to be fixed within 7 days. So now I paid 175.00 to have golden blonde hair with red spots and bleach blonde tips. Absolutely disgusted with the amount of money I paid for the worst looking hair I have even seen. Needless to say my hair was supposed to be a white gray color. The girl who did my hair was new and had no clue what she was doing along with giving false promise and not honor her word of fixing my hair when she even said I know it's not the right color and I want you to come back so I can fix it. On top of the manager talking to me being completely ignorant and lying through her teeth saying it my fault cause I didn't have time to let her finish my hair. When I'm fact if you would have did my hair the day I had it scheduled for instead of canceling you would of had all day. But in return I accommodate your worker cause she couldn't drive in the snow and was at your shop for 5 hours missed my dinner and still got the worst results ever and you won't fix it. First off, I came here because I bought an amazon.com deal for the place. I've been doing this for the past 6 months whilst trying to find a new stylist after moving here. I finally found one! The first time I went, I got a hair cut with Cassie and absolutely LOVED what she did with my hair! I had gotten a bad cut two times before (review on here) and she fixed it up completely. It's exactly what I wanted. I'm so glad that she respected my style preferences and showed off her excellent cutting/styling skills. She was knowledgeable about her product and taught me new things to do for myself. On top of that, she is such a sweetheart and so easy to talk to! After the cut, however, things got shaken up a bit. I went to pay with my amazon/living social deal and it turns out that she wasn't the stylist it was for. This was my fault because I didn't read the fine print that said to call in instead of making an online appointment (which is super easy and convenient by the way). So to any reading this who have one of those, make sure you phone in first!!! However, the lead receptionist (who apparently just became a mother - congrats!) was helpful and talked to the owner who decided to honor the amount that I paid and take that off of my total price. This was above and beyond what he could have done, so I highly respect his willingness to accommodate what was my mistake. ONE BIG DETERRENT was the younger (seemingly new) receptionist (maybe all of 20) who was quite honestly kind of b1tchy. While I openly admitted I made the mistake, this young one kept scolding me and telling me that I should have read the whole thing. I was light heartedly talking with the older, nicer receptionist about ideas to help them in case someone like me comes in again when the young, snarky one piped in AGAIN that it was my fault. Ok seriously, after the owner says it's okay, she didn't need to keep up her little tirade. I kept my cool and didn't say anything to her because everyone else had been so nice and accommodating. I was visiting Pittsburgh for a friend's wedding and probably the worst decision of my life was to make an appointment at this hair salon! The lady, actually let me rephrase that the girl that did my hair was TERRIBLE she did not know how to do a normal blow out, ruined my hair for the wedding and it took her almost two hours!!! First of all, I highly recommend Sean if you have curly hair. Secondly, I've been going here for almost 4 years now. It started way back, in my early college days, when I realized my curly and oh so messy hair needed a bit of TLC. I had colored it. relaxed it. straightened it, and it was DAMAGED! But Sean was amazing, took the time to help me figure out what I wanted with my hair, and has since been my favorite! He knows how to cut curly hair, and keep it looking great, with lots of bounce and volume, without that poofy curly look. I recently moved about 3 hours out of town, but still go back for my haircuts often - (crazy i know, but i'm really picky about my curly hair!). I needed a haircut bad, that is the only reason I stopped in this place. When you first walk in no hi or hello, you literally have to say something to get their attention. The haircut I got was terrible too. The salon women did not listen to me and just decided to do what she wanted, at that point I just got up and left. I called at 6:50pm knowing they were only open until 7:30 that night. They fit me in for a last minute appointment at 7, and I walked out by 7:30 with my refreshed hair ready for an event the next day. My birthday gift to my wife was a trip to Lewis Hair Salon in Shadyside. She wanted to try a somewhat significant change -- from medium length hair to short -- and she was a little bit nervous about it. Our stylist was Sean and he was great -- both as an advisor and as a stylist. He was patient, friendly and helpful. He listened to what she wanted, reviewed the photos she brought along, discussed some technical details with us, and went to work! About midway through the cut, Sean recommended a minor adjustment to our plan due to the nature of my wife's hair -- and this told me he was paying close attention to everything and wasn't just sleepwalking through the cut. The end result was great, and my wife and I were both happy with the new look! The only negative thing I can say about the place is the somewhat small reception area -- but then again -- it is Shadyside. Thanks, Sean! read more

I tried this salon this weekend because I had been a regular at another nearby salon and just didn't think it was quite worth the price. I was very impressed with Lewis Salon. Rachel was my stylist and she really took her time to give me a nice cut even though I was just getting a trim and my bangs cut back in. We got along great which is always a plus when you're getting your hair done. The best part was when I went to pay, and it was only $23 for the wash and cut! I started going here because they used Goldwell color. Things were fine at the beginning. They used a demi color that seemed to work well. Then my hair started looking drier, and the color seemed off. I kept asking what was going on, and they finally admitted they had switched me to permanent color without telling me, claiming that Goldwell had discontinued the demi product. Turned out that was not true. That product had never been discontinued. I switched to another Goldwell salon; they used the original demi product; and my hair looks healthier and shinier again. And the coverage is much better than whatever they had started using on my hair at this salon. The color is better, too. When they switched products my hair also started showing gold highlights. I have dark ash brown hair, and the gold didn't look great. I kept asking about that, and the stylist said there was no gold in what she was mixing and no way to cool the color down. Then I found out that what she had been using was called "golden brown". If you want to hear more, their pricing is also an issue. When all I got was color - no cut, no blow dry, leaving the salon with wet hair - they charged me the same amount as when I got all three services. Their explanation was that they don't do "a la carte" pricing. I'm now going to Kelly at Mint. She's terrific. And my hair is looking much better again. read more

I recently had a manicure done at this location. I only have great things to stay about how kind and friendly the staff were. However, I was very disappointed in the gel manicure I received. My nails chipped the next day and I completely removed the gel polish about a day and a half later. I'd recommend trying this place for other services, however not for gel manicures. read more

I actually have to give this salon a '0' star rating (have to give it a 1, because I don't think it'll take a '0' here!) I went here many years ago, for a simple style before my informal wedding day, and they did a fine job. Fast forward 10 yrs later (this haircut was actually about a year ago, or spring of 2013, even though I'm posting Feb. '14)...I called and said I need a simple shoulder length cut...and that I had four kids and was on budget, nothing fancy, just a simple cut, but something better than a 'Great Clips'...and they said no problem... Well, the first thing that should clue you in when you walk into a salon, is that there was practically NO one in the salon! In the middle of a Friday! Then, they sent me upstairs with a super sweet 22 yr old, who I talked to a bit about the way my hair tends to like to lay, but cut, etc. Nothing fancy. Who could mess this up, right?? Wrong!! She began by cutting a fairly large chunch out of the middle of my hair on the side!! Instead of giving me a tiny bit of laying on the ends of about 1/2"-3/4" of layering, she cut about 4-5 INCHES up from the bottom! I said to say, whoa, wait, what just happened? She seemed to get upset/flustered...so then things went from bad to worse, when she said she had to go down and get the owner... This middle aged man came up (the owner I assumed?), and rather brusquely asked me what the problem was. I told him what had happened, and showed him that I now had hair that began up by my ear, rather than ending down a bit below jaw line...!! He verbally cut off the stylist, and myself, by booming that he could only hear one of us at a time (even though we weren't talking in an upset manner)...and acted like nothing really bad had happened!! He made both of us VERY tense. Not a great situation, at all!! In the end, she went back to the simple somewhat blunt cut I had requested at the start. BUT...I had a 'hole' on the side of my head, of hair that just ended abruptly...that took almost a year to grow out!! Oh, and not only did I have to pay for the cut still, but it was a few dollars more than what I was quoted on the phone!! Lessons learned: 1) don't get your haircut somewhere where there are no other clients when you walk in - unless it's first thing in the morning! 2) don't assume because it's a simple cut it can't get messed up and 3) don't assume just because you went somewhere years ago, they will still do a decent job! read more
