Today we're here to ride Lex Luthor at Six Flags Magic Mountain! The World's Tallest Drop Tower!!! (Since Orlando Free Fall killed someone and Zumanjaro was closed without warning, which I cannot express just how pissed off I am at that). Once you pull down the OTSR's, you notice something interesting about them. And that's because they feel just like a lapbar. They aren't bulky, they give a ton of room, it feels just like a lapbar! And honestly. I like it! It gives so much room. So yeah, SWEET! We then start to ascend the Superman tower. If you're facing right, you get a good view of DC Universe as well as a good view of Batman, Riddler's Revenge, Twisted Colossus, Scream and Wonder Woman: Flight of Courage. However, if you're facing the other side, you get a good view of Twisted Colossus, Goliath, Full Throttle, Revolution, Tatsu, Viper, and X2. But either way, you're getting a GREAT view. Now, back when Superman was open, a Superman car will dispatch and it will cause the tower to shake a little bit. No this does NOT mean the ride is unsafe, you're gonna be fine. This is a structural thing that is done with 90% of coasters. But yeah, it scares the crap out of the GP. And I'm sorry to be mean, but I find that to be HILARIOUS! However, Superman is now dead so you can no longer experience this feeling, which is a bummer! =( We eventually hit the top where Lex Luthor says some dialogue before laughing. We are then waiting in suspense for a few seconds before we eventually plummet 85 MPH straight down from 400 ft in the air. And yeah, this is awesome on its own. But if you do what I do and close your eyes and look straight down. It becomes INSANE! Almost gives you the feeling of the first drop on X2. Well... not quite.... but it's sort of similar. Eventually, we slow down to a crawl right as we hit the bottom, where we can't help but clap. So yeah, that's Lex Luthor. And yeah this is a GREAT drop tower! I definitely prefer it to Superman as it's currently one of the best drop towers that I've ridden. So STRONGLY recommend trying this out as it's a great ride and a must do for all drop tower enthusiasts! Just be careful because Six Flags could tear this ride out without any warning, especially now that Superman Escape From Krypton is closed forever! I used to come to Six Flags Magic Mountain all the time before my stroke. I absolutely love this rde. It's a 415ft. drop ride built on the side of Superman. You drop 400ft. at hit a top speed of 85mph. You can see for miles when you get to the top. It's definitely a scary ride if you've never been in it. I'm the only one in the friend group who likes free fall rides.. so I ended up having to ride this alone. They can't even ride Acrophobia in over Georgia, which is half the height so.. But I will say, I was surprised at how "not scary" it was. Really -- relative to the height, it wasn't as scary. Going up was honestly the scariest part. You're climbing up over 400 feet in the air having absolutely beautiful views of the Valley, and it's breathtaking. The drop speed is 85 mph -- the reason why I thought it wasn't as scary was Acrophobia is 200 ft and drops at max speed of 65 mph. That's half the height -- so you feel that bad stomach feeling for the entire duration of the 1.5 second drop. Lex Luthor: Drop of Doom is twice the height, so the drop is longer. You have enough time to process in your brain "oh, I'm dropping but I'm gonna be OK." The drop is about 4-5 seconds long and by your third second, you process it and it doesn't feel as bad. I ended up riding this twice because I enjoyed it so much. The wait's not as bad here because I'm sure the fanbase is divided due to reasons mentioned above. But if I were to give you advice, definitely check this place out!! read more

NOW. //THRILL RIDES SERIES// LEX LUTHOR: DROP OF DOOM - Minimum Height: 48" - Climb to the top of a 415-foot tower for the fastest, highest free falling drop ride in SoCal. - "It Doesn't Get Any Higher Than This" I thought I did a pretty good job of a review the last time I penned for "Drop of Doom", so why don't you give my "Previous Review" a read when you're done with this recently updated section? To put simply, this is Six Flags: Magic Mountain's answer to a free fall machine. They actually used to have one 20 something years ago, but it's been long demolished. (It was like an elevator cage! Dose anyone recall?) Anyway, every roller coaster theme park has one of these--no excessively fancy gimmick, no extraordinary elaborate theme--a machine that takes its patrons to great height, drop them down, and have them scream for their lives. To their credits, Six Flags did give the building a rather transparently mediocre attempt of a facade to masquerade it as Lex Luther's research facility. Of particular interest, after coming to the park and this specific ride many, many times prior, I finally noticed a fake elevator that the designers have build on of the back walls of the queue line. The doors to this elevator never opens, but the floor indicator lights above them do change in a cycle. I thought that was rather cute, and reminded me of that signature Disney magic that's otherwise bountiful at a Disney park. But here at Magic Mountain? It's far and few between, but I do appreciate it much when it happens. The ride itself is one of the few that actually gives me some form of fright (well, kinda) now that I am basically callous to most rides due to coaster over-usage secondary to annual pass ownership; though it's still intimidating enough to make me cough incessantly out of uneasy nervousness prior to boarding. When actually experiencing the drop though, it's all right. I feel a-ok. You gonna have to do better than that nowadays, theme parks! Though just to be clear, due to its usual short waiting time, as little as 5 minutes, it remains to be one of my go-to darlings. And a 5-star rating it shall keep. (VR promotion is now officially over in 2019, by the way. Sorry if you didn't get a chance of experience it--though it was barely an experience worthy of regaling.) The brief moment of paranoia when you're in mid-air, wondering just when exactly your seat will plunge many, many feet below, be sure to take a breather and look at your amazing view, only made possible by rising to numerous floors above. Look at all the people walking around, all the other coasters in operation, try to find your car in the massive parking lot. This isn't thrill, but a different, more subdued kind of joy. Then BOOM. Alright so there's drop rides at pretty much the majority of parks but none of them are as totally awesome as this one! Pretty much your ride is over in about 30 seconds but about 5 of those seconds are seriously what's good with drop of doom as you are at a really intense free fall where your straight plummeting towards the earth only to come to a great gentle stop right before your about to hit the floor! One of the best parts of this ride has to be when your on it and Superman is also doing a ride cycle as the vibrations that run through your seat are quite intense and add to the eerie factor of being up sooo high with that amazing view of Six Flags! The line for this ride moves decently fast as it cycles pretty quick getting riders in and out which is always a huge plus on any ride! Summer is approaching and the heat will rise to those insane temperatures but fear not the line on the inside is cooled down by the all mighty air conditioner to keep you cool on those hot summer days in the park! Overall this is by far one of the best drop rides I've ever ridden and always a must ride when visiting the awesomeness that is Six Flags Magic Mountain! read more

I honestly just scared myself to death over it. Ironically, I did Escape from Krypton, which is almost the same height as part of the tower. Yet I still waited till almost last to do. It's actually...pretty easy. Haha! The seats absorb most of the G-Force, and so it's mostly the psychological of just dangling out there in a chair. It's pretty smooth and predictable. No sudden drop, making you lose a couple pee drops. It's when Luthor stops talking. Then drops. It honestly is a great view. Ha! I remember I waited late in the day and so when I went up, alone because everyone was leaving, that I saw the disking sun again. It was...kinda beautiful. Great ending to the day. read more

Breathtaking Rush! Great Ride! Super Fun Adrenaline Rush! Six Flags Magic Mountain is my favorite amusement park of the many parks I have visited worldwide. This is one of my favorite rides of anywhere I have been. It goes up slowly and everything is pretty relaxed until you get towards the top and start to hear everyone else panicking... I have to admit, other people's fear gets me on this one. You wait at the top for the unknown point of release and then you just drop super fast towards the ground from 700 feet in the air and then it gently cushions your stop and return to the ground. Super well designed and planned ride. Nice and smooth and all around great! What else can be said, but why are you not at six flags now riding this ride? read more

Since most of the wait was in an air-conditioned building, it might move it right up to the best ride at the park. Everywhere else you might be in a sweltering metal boxed area, a outside shaded line with broken misters, a muggy mister area or getting completely drenched by the misters. So refreshing to just stand and be moderately cool and not sweating for the first time ALL day. This ride has only been open since April 2, 2012, which also makes it a go to ride. Along with the fact that it is the WORLD's tallest drop tower. What are you waiting for get in line now! Our wait was only about an hour and upon exiting notice that they have a single rider line (AWESOME). read more

If you like that "dropping" feeling in your stomach, this is the ride for you. The view is great from the top, but it is pretty scary because the wind shakes the tower. This ride is built in with Superman, and I have experienced the Superman car zoom up the tower as I was nearing the top. It may have been a communication error because that hasn't happened since then. The ride is just one drop once you reach the top, unlike Supreme Scream which goes up and down. I tried their VR headset (gone now) and it was pretty mediocre. The visuals were not clear and the headset was uncomfortable. I'm glad they got rid of it! read more

This one is OK. Not much to it, really. They try to build it up that you are going to test some new vehicle. Then you strap into the chair and up you go. They really rely on that more than anything because the lift up is a bit acrophobic. You end up about 400' off the ground sitting in a chair with a chest bar holding you in. If you aren't a window washer or one of those guys who repairs transmission towers you'll probably find that bit unnerving (which is the whole idea!). And you sit there for several seconds before it drops you. The drop itself is over in moments. It's fun, but very brief. It wouldn't be bad if the wait wasn't an hour or more. For a wait that long it probably isn't worth it. If there's a short line, go for it. Or if you have a Flash Pass, I suppose (especially the one with reduced wait times...platinum, I think). read more

I don't know if drop rides are really anyone's favorite, but this one is pretty good. The lines are usually pretty long and they can only run revolutions one cycle at a time, so the wait isn't always worth it for such a short free-fall, but this one goes up a lot higher than your average free-fall ride and it hangs there at the top for quite a while, giving your nerves some time to really kick in before you feel the tower swaying and shaking and if you're really lucky you'll get to be up top while the Superman ride, which uses the same vertical scale, goes up on the other side of the beams and blows out your ears from the sound and your butt hole from the fear. 'Hold on to your butts', is accurate advice for this ride. read more

I usually dislike free falls because they're either painful (Free Fall @ Magic Mountain) or they make my head hurt (Tower of Terror @ Disney). Also, there's the idea that I could somehow fly out of my seat... Or the gondola/cart crashes into the ground. Hence, during each MM visit, I would avoid this ride. With that being said, there was a very short wait time for this ride yesterday so my friend and I decided to conquer our fears by facing it head on. It was nice and cool inside so it was a great place to take a break from the sun's heat. My friend and I had approx. 10 minutes to prepare ourselves but each time a group was sent in, the nerves we were able to control, was lost again. Finally, it was our turn to step outside. There was a short 3 minute wait before my group was able to board. The first gondola I counted dropped after 7 seconds. The second dropped after 21. So I'm going to assume the drops are randomly timed. When it was our turn to board, we walked down a path that led us to a caged area, so for those who have loose items, you are able to leave them on the ground. The seats themselves looked slightly intimidating. I'm a rather petite girl, so when I pulled the OSTR down in place, the two bars that go over your shoulder, did not even cover my upper half of the body. However, the bottom portion of the restraint is very snug to your waist and is kept in place with a seat belt that connects to the actual seat. For those who like to hold on to handle bars during roller coasters, there are the shoulder bars or handle bars in front of the waist. While I was waiting for the ride to go up, I was settled on holding on to the shoulder bars for dear life. Going up the tower was frightening to me since I have a fear of heights. What helped was focusing on one particular area. The side I was on had a great view of the Green Lantern coaster and so that became my focus the entire time. The ride up is pretty slow and at about 75% of the way, I was hoping for it to stop already. I think the gondola stopped for a quick second and continued its final length. With thoughts of impending doom aside, the view was honestly beautiful and the air was refreshing. After a quick scan of my surrounding, we were finally at the top and my eyes locked on GL again. Lex Luthor's voice becomes audible for a few seconds, then it's just silence. Knowing that at any second, we would drop 400 feet, my grip on the shoulder bars became tighter and I tried to control my breathing. I was so focused, I didn't even get a chance to count how long it took before we started free falling. However, the moments we were dropping, I could feel myself smiling and actually enjoying it! 5 seconds later, the gondola slowed down and we continued to lower to the ground. The ride was over. The drop itself was incredibly smooth. I was surprised that my head did not throb with pain but was more surprised that I walked away wanting to ride it again. read more

One Bad A$$ thing about it is when the Superman goes up on the side of it, the whole tower sways and when your up there it's pretty trippy. Adds to the awesomeness... . This ride is basically FreeFall on steroids. Two cars, one on each side of the Superman track, eight seats each traverse to the top of the tower and drop. It looks insane, but the ride is much tamer than it looks. Its a very smooth ride to the top, but it just keeps going and going and going. Since you're facing out, you have no idea where the tower ends, but the views are spectacular. Once the car stops, it's a matter of anticipating the drop. The car wobbles back and forth a bit at the top due to the wind and that's a little disconcerting, but I never felt like it was going to separate from the structure. The drop is quite thrilling, really. As the car gains speed, the air rushes past you faster and faster and then it just starts slowing down very quickly. It's sort of a letdown, actually, I'd ride it again, but only if the lines are extremely short (less than 20 minutes). The worst part is not knowing when the car is going to drop. read more

Probably the scariest ride they have here. The drop is 400 ft and when you get to the top the whole thing kinda sways a little bit from the Superman ride. When I got to the top its a huge rush because you are up at the very top for around ten seconds or maybe a little more. You are up a lot higher than Goliath and your feet just dangle in this little seat. The view is cool too. I enjoy the rush that roller coasters and free fall rides give me and this one takes the cake. The whole experience was a lot of fun but really scary. At the top there is a speaker with Lex Luther telling you that you are going to die or something like that. I was trying not to pay attention. The drop is extremely fast and really gets the heart pumping. The line was really short when I went on a weekday and its inside with A/C which was perfect for how hot it gets at this park. If you have ever been on a free fall ride and enjoy them, I would definitely check this one out. It's crazy. read more

I love free fall rides, and this is the tallest one! As the ride takes you up, you get a spectacular view of the entire park and its surroundings. You can see everything because you are so crazy high up. This ride is even taller than Goliath. Your feet just dangle and sway in the air. You know the drop will happen, but you have no idea when. The anxiety of just waiting up there suspended at the top is the worst. It feels like forever! If it's windy, it's just really really scary. Then suddenly, you feel the rush of wind and the lightness in your stomach as gravity plummets you down. It goes by so fast that you won't have time to scream. The next moment, you open your eyes are realize the car stopped and you are safely back on the ground. read more

One thing that is awesome is you wait indoors and it is air conditioning. Yes the line looks short, but does take quite some time especially if there is a lot of fast pass people which can cause quite a delay. I rode on both sides which is nice. I liked the one where you look at the parking lot and all of the rides. I like how we go up very slowly and see the park as it does take your time. Once you go up you go down very fast as it is fun as well as your nerves and heart are shaking :) read more

INDOOR LINE. A must for a hot day. This ride drops you from a very high point at 85 miles per hour. The build up for this ride is intense with a couple false drops/small movements. There's a Lex Luther voice speaking to you once you make it to the top, so you get a good idea of when you will drop. read more

The most breathtaking drop ride ever it makes supreme scream at knotts look like a kids ride. I went on it for the first time during fright fest with some friends and it was at night which makes it even better then later on around 11 a thick marine layer rolled into the valley so we had to go on it again so we got up about a hundred feet or so and could'nt see squat and it was during fright fest so the timing was perfect. read more

Had it not kept breaking down, I'd have gladly given 5 stars. The line moves quick, but it took us 2 times of waiting through it to finally get on due to mechanical issues. I am not a free fall fan which is why I did not get on with my boyfriend. I am glad I didn't because he ended up getting stuck at the top for ten minutes! I was already planning the rest of my weekend as a single lady when he finally dropped down. He admitted he was scared not only because there was only one other person on the ride with him but, because he said the tower would sway every time the Superman ride would pass. I would have been super scared and pissed if I had been up there! read more

OMG! I love this ride. The climb to the top is fast and once you're there is quite serene. The view is spectacular. I couldn't hear Lex Luthor's voice clearly but it didn't matter. The ride was great on track one. However, track two seemed to be artifically slowed down by the brakes. No sure of the reason. However, when there is no friction between the train and the track, its nothing short of amazing. When there is friction, you lose the free fall feeling and the intensity is lost. read more
