Dream Buildings, LLC is actually a nightmare…read more We contracted with this Amish firm to build two small structures, similar to 11 previously built on our 45 year old horse farm. The open 3-bay shed was okay, but the other 20' x 14' enclosed shed addition to an existing barn was a whole 6" out of square, which is incredible especially for a building this small. They could have fixed the problem early on (it was hard to miss), but instead went forward as if everything was fine, until of course they got to the metal roof which became a mess, as became the fate of the ceilings inside. The company started out by having the lumber delivered on a 50' trailer at 7 am during weekday rush hour without previous notice, and without the crew, who didn't show up until the afternoon. We had to call the police to direct traffic as the trailer had to be unloaded on our little road which is a straight shot to the high school. During the first full day of construction, without pausing to ask of its whereabouts, the crew hit a waterline. The open shed building is 18 feet from a frost proof hydrant so it was obvious a water line was in the near vicinity. Out of pure sloppiness they also handily mowed down our driveway markers, which keep the staff aware of the edge of an embankment, and apparently thought it funny. On the third day I caught the crew installing a header with only a 6' clearance, not exactly high enough for a horse to walk under. A flitch plate was really needed here but the matter had not been properly thought out, and we ended up leaving the existing post in the middle of the opening, as it was a bearing wall. I also had to run to the lumberyard and get ledger lock screws and headlock bolts as the crew thought a nail gun was the answer to everything. Fortunately our building inspector didn't agree. Construction continued over a six day period with a four day hiatus in the middle due to the crew's Pentecost holy days. During the entire time the crew littered our working farm and home, in full view of our clients, with empty water bottles and construction scrap, as they apparently felt they didn't need a dumpster (which in the end they had to resort to obtaining.) We had a very windy day while the crew was absent, and an unsecured piece of metal siding flew up and into one of my staff members who was leading a horse, scaring the horse and knocking him down onto a rip-rapped bank. Fortunately although he was quite bruised, he was not broken, and the horse was retrieved. The finish work was shall we say, unfortunate. We had specified A/C plywood for the shelving and ceilings, but got ply score good-no-sides sheathing instead which was full of open knot holes. The one interior door came without the 9 lights we had specified, and two subsequent doors later we still do not have one. The plans called for a 32 inch door and the crew prepared a 32" rough opening instead, so now only a 30" door is possible, and not easy to come by as it is an unusual size. The crew did not tape the insulation joints (they put it in horizontally) even though I provided them with tape when I saw the problem. And I had to ask them to put up 1 x 3 "molding" to cover the gaps between the ceiling and the sidewall paneling. I had to do likewise with the exterior as they had apparently thought a little caulking would be enough to cover the 1/4 inch gap between the new sidewall and the existing building. At the moment the roofing, which being metal really wants to be square, runs short on one side and dumps rain water into the soffit and thence into the interior of the insulated walls. The owner of the company doesn't seem to think it is much of a problem, but presses for payment. We have already advanced him 2/3. Foolish us.
